In court today: Battle over government report on wrongdoing at Scientology rehab facility

Gary_RichardsonWe’re looking forward to getting reports on how a hearing goes today in McAlester, Oklahoma. Attorney Gary Richardson (right) is trying to convince the state to turn over a report which could be devastating to Scientology’s drug rehab network, Narconon. The hearing starts at 2:30 pm Eastern time, and we’re hoping to get a report from the scene as soon as the hearing finishes.

What’s at stake? Last month, we told you about two stunning lawsuits filed by a former state inspector general named Kimberly Poff and one of her former investigators, Michael DeLong. Working for the state’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Poff and DeLong say they had uncovered wrongdoing in the wake of several deaths at Scientology’s flagship drug rehab facility, Narconon Arrowhead, and had recommended that it be shut down.

Poff and DeLong allege that their superiors at the department buried the report because they were afraid to take on Scientology. When Poff and DeLong complained about it, they were fired.

Poff and DeLong are now suing the state department over their terminations, and the report they wrote is now in the possession of the state’s attorney general, Scott Pruitt.

Gary Richardson is a former federal prosecutor who is representing numerous people who are suing Narconon Arrowhead, including the families of Gabriel Graves, Hillary Holten, and Stacy Dawn Murphy, who died at the Narconon facility in a 9-month period in 2011 and 2012.

Richardson has subpoenaed the Poff/DeLong report from the Department of Mental Health, and today a judge will hear from him and from Narconon, which wants to keep the report out of Richardson’s hands.

As soon as we hear something, we’ll add it to this post.

Meanwhile, over at NarcononReviews.net yesterday, Mary McConnell described a lawsuit that was filed against Narconon Gulf Coast in May. The parents of Domenic J. Penta, Jr. are suing after their son spent almost two months at the Destin, Florida facility in 2012, was kicked out of the program, and then died of a drug overdose.

SCIENTOLOGY EXPELLED?: Front groups drop off National Unity Summit website

Wow. Talk about results! On Saturday, we told you that one of our eagle-eyed tipsters had noticed that several stealth Scientologists and Scientology front groups had wormed their way into the “National Unity Summit” scheduled for this Saturday at Dorsey High School in Los Angeles.

Now, our tipster is back with surprising news…

The National Unity Summit has dropped The Way To Happiness, Foundation for a Drug-Free World, and Californians for Drug Free Youth as sponsors.

All of them were sponsors for the event and were listed on the event’s sponsor page. And now, all of them have been removed.

The website still contains a page for The Way To Happiness, but there are no internal links to it.

It also still contains a page for United for Human Rights, but again there are no internal links to it.

Interestingly, the National Unity Summit website has completely removed the webpages for Drug-Free World and Californians for Drug Free Youth.

It appears the only Scientology related official sponsor is now Crossover Outreach, the new front group of the Californians for Drug Free Youth front group.

Also, we checked the list of speakers, and it appears that Scientology spokesman Bob Adams, and CCHR shill Rizza Islam no longer are on it, and their individual speaker pages have been removed from the site.

Whoops.

UPDATE: Our tipster cautions us that the website suddenly losing this information doesn’t prove that the Scientology infiltrators still might not be taking part on Saturday, only that their involvement is going further underground. So we’ll keep checking on that as the event nears.
