2001: The San Francisco Chronicle reported on November 2nd that Scientology is abandoning the org in downtown. “Only weeks after opening an Ikea-furnished, dot-commy new branch in San Francisco’s South of Market area just as the neighborhood once again goes to seed, the Church of Scientology has quietly placed its downtown headquarters up for sale amid a devastating slump in property prices. The new SoMa branch, or ‘mission’ in church parlance, came about as a result of actress (and Scientologist) Jenna Elfman taking an interest in emulating actress-Scientologist pal Kirstie Alley, who led the way in opening a mission in her hometown of Wichita, Kan. Scientologists-in-the-know tell me that Elfman specifically wanted to create a space that would reflect the young and fresh energy of the area, which she apparently thought remained a mecca for young and fresh dot-com entrepreneurs. She couldn’t have been more wrong. Yet even as the dot-coms imploded, Elfman pushed ahead with efforts to lease the 7,300-square-foot Mission Street property and appoint it with snazzy furniture and a tech-industrial
sensibility. A children’s center and activity room were built downstairs, complete with a ballet bar along full-length mirrors. No one ever visits, at least not that I can see. The neighborhood, as those who actually live here know, is not the sort of place that people naturally associate with spiritual growth. The Tenderloin headquarters building is thus up for sale, and the church is shopping around for more spacious, affluent digs in the Financial District. Insiders say they hope to vacate the premises by the beginning of next year. ‘We bought that building back in 1978,’ Quiros said. ‘We always believed that we could make it in any neighborhood.’ It took the church headquarters more than two decades to learn this isn’t true. Anyone want to bet that the SoMa mission lasts nowhere near as long?”

2000: The Standard published an article this week on the efforts of Scientology to forbid auctions of E-meters on the Ebay auction site. “The auction of primitive electronic devices used by the Church of Scientology to measure the spiritual health of its members has been blocked by eBay, to the dismay of critics of the church and supporters of the Internet auction system. Several of these were being auctioned off on eBay before lawyers representing the Church of Scientology complained, saying that only licensed Scientology ministers were allowed to own e-meters. EBay discontinued the auctions of the devices. Helen Kobrin, a lawyer for the church, said that e-meters are protected under US federal law, which states they may only be owned by authorised members of the Church of Scientology. But she couldn’t recall what case or federal ruling established this legal protection. According to eBay, the e-meter auction was discontinued under its intellectual property owners protection programme. ‘EBay removed the item because of the VeRO guidelines; we are not determining the legality or illegality of the item,’ said eBay spokesman Kevin Pursglove.”

1999: Bob Minton reported that Scientology has been moving against a new organization being organized in Clearwater, Florida, now known as the Lisa McPherson trust. “This morning at 9:00am the lease contracts were ready to be signed when Stacy called before going over to the Nations Bank Building on Cleveland Street. However, by the time she arrived at 10:30, they said they got an email message from the owner who said to put this lease on hold. In fact, Stacy was told they have other plans for the space and it won’t be available. This is in a building which has a lot of unrented space. We have found out that the Scienos have been sending large DA packs on all involved in the Lisa Foundation to at least office buildings number 2 and 4. Bennetta Slaughter, the AMC boss of Lisa McPherson who was in fact THE person most responsible for destroying Lisa, incorporated The Lisa Foundation and The Lisa McPherson Foundation in Florida the day before the incorporation papers filed by Ken Dandar landed at the Secretary of State Office in Florida. It now looks as though the Estate of Lisa McPherson will have to file a lawsuit against Benetta Slaughter to rightfully reclaim its property.”

“Lawrence Wright is a regular ol’ average human being. 1998: Graham Berry posted a description of an encounter between Ursula Caberta of the German government and Kendrick Moxon, attorney for Scientology. “I took Ursula Caberta down a floor to where Scientology lawyer Moxon and OSA employee were inspecting documents. I shook Moxon’s hand. He then wiped his hands saying ‘can’t be too careful’. To Ursula he said, ‘You didn’t bring her down here just to show her boxes. Where is your uniform? She said it is casual day and uniforms are for the Sea Organization. Moxon then said ‘I mean your Nazi uniform’. He then snapped to attention and gave her the Nazi salute repeatedly! ‘Sieg heil’. When he did not cease his strutting, heel clicking and offensive saluting we left. 1997: The Detroit Free Press carried an article this week on the Germany/Scientology debate. “By her own account, Germany’s top Scientology hunter is doing a great job. She ran the Scientologists out of the real estate market in her hometown of Hamburg. She convinced the local banks to deny Scientologists loans. And this month, the Scientology school across the border in Denmark may finally shut down. Scientologists call her ‘the new Goebbels,’ after Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, and U.S. officials have criticized her tactics. But Ursula Caberta, director of Hamburg’s anti-Scientology task force, has no plans to back down. ‘We know people working in Scientology …intend to eliminate the German state. Here, we’re trying to stop it,’ Caberta said in an interview in her office earlier this month. She offered a sweet smile. ‘In America, they obviously are much farther along.’ Caberta is one of the most influential members of a growing battalion of German officials arrayed against the Church of Scientology, a Los Angeles-based spiritual movement founded in the 1950s by the late science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. According to Caberta, Scientology is a blueprint for world domination. It calls for the creation of a new world order, she said, in which Scientologists alone would be permitted to marry, procreate and exercise other rights. As part of their plan to ‘clear the planet,’ Caberta said, Scientologists are even breeding something like a new race. ‘In America right now, you have the second and third generations of clear and pure Scientologists, brought up entirely in Scientology schools,’ she said. Scientologists call this analysis absurd and say Caberta is drawing conclusions about the church by reading Hubbard’s science fiction. ‘We have nothing to do with political games or purposes. Nothing,’ Hackenjos said. ‘Basically we’re no different from any other religion, except for the fact that we’re a very modern religion,’ said Mary Anne Ahmad, the church’s director of special affairs in Chicago, who was working in Ann Arbor last week. ‘We were the first major religion to come out of the 20th Century.'”
