“Apparently transfers from the Galley without apprenticeship or replacement and Quadruple hatting the food purchaser so he simply used the food chandler ashore are some of the obvious whys back of the sudden recent drop in food quality. The WHYs being advertised are the wrong whys — low allocation is a wrong why. The food isn’t kept to allocation and has become VERY expensive for very low quality due to using a chandler. This would not remedy the increased allocation as the allocation is already not followed. Advertising this as the why or remedying it will not restore food quality.” — L. A Lloyds yacht class is different and useful. But true enough, in dismantling working installations for survey and reassembly, when we tried to start up one engine just wouldn’t start. A valve had been reversed! And an injector bleed valve was leaking. Two tugs were on hand as a precaution. Our E/R guys put it right quickly. “Currently, most of the world has been ordered to shut down. People are told to stay in their homes and no go out. Freedom curtailed. Told not to touch others. Told there is a pandemic and millions may die, Driving people down the tone scale to Fear. Deprived of income due to no work. Financial problems. Heavy fines (in some countries such as Australia) in the thousands if one is caught outside of home without a ‘justifiable’ reason. Penalty for Being. Media and news channels constantly emitting a barrage of bad news on deaths and how bad it is and the favourite phrase to imply agreement and stick all at the same level, ‘We are all in this together.’ Enforced agreement. These are the hallmarks of driving people PTS. This means that the driving force behind this must be an SP or group of SPs. Just knowing this can de-PTS someone who is familiar with the technology. One does NOT have to go into agreement with this socially enforced culture.”

1995: Grady Ward reported two violations of his privacy by Scientology investigators this week. “Mr. Waterman [with Pacific Bell] said that although the person did not have the code that I put on my phone bill (after warning from Jeff), he had other details of my life such as social security number, mother’s maiden name, previous phone bills, etc. etc. and said that he had recently suffered a stroke and couldn’t remember the code. After he started getting extremely abusive, Mr Waterman gave him the details of the bill. After hearing the news from Pacific Bell of a person lying to get access to my account information, I contacted my long distance carrier, AT&T and found, not to my surprise, that someone called ‘Grady Ward’ who had just undergone ‘eye surgery’ had required the operators to read off the last three months of my AT&T long distance bills for 707 826 7715 and 707 826 7712. According to Pat with Team 5 at the Mesa, AZ AT&T account services, the impersonator called earlier this PM. Pat said that I had no code on my accounts (I did and had earlier verified it as I did with Pacific Bell). AT&T suggested I put an ‘L’ code on my local carrier bill that supposedly would require *written* authorization before releasing my records.”

2000: Plans were announced this week for a benefit concert for the Lisa McPherson Trust, to be held in November in Clearwater. “The first annual benefit concert for the Lisa McPherson Trust. It is scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2000 at a Clearwater, Florida venue to be announced at a later date. This event will feature area and regional musical acts, as well as appearances and speeches by former Scientologists and cult experts, among others. This event is being organized by area musicians, and all proceeds will be donated to the Lisa McPherson Trust.”

“You’re going up against a problem here, if you deal with the medico, of a person who monkeys. He doesn’t have any very precise answers. When he immediately gets out of the field of the broken leg, when he gets out of the field of putting on a tourniquet or some other type of action and he gets into a field where he himself does not have very good answers and so he monkeys. And they will do some very interesting and wild things. They will get some kind of a suspicion that there might be a growth in somebody’s chest and start removing tissue. And they’ll do exploratories and they will do all kinds of wild things. 1996: Paulette Cooper reported this week on the death of Bob Kaufman, author of ‘Inside Scientology,’ at age 63. “Bob was the first person courageous enough to reveal the upper level materials. For this, he was terribly harassed and his dreams of a concert piano career shattered. When he gave a recital at Carnegie Hall more than 20 years ago, the Scientologists found out in advance and called the ticket taker and told them to tell people he was ill and the concert was canceled. Almost everyone was turned away, and as Bob looked out at an almost empty audience, and realized what must have happened, he lost it and his fury crept into his music. Later, the Times review would complain that he played as if he was angry. He was also an extraordinary friend to many anti-Scientologists, including myself, Monica, Nan McClean, John Atack, Roy Wallis (when he was alive), Margie Wakefield, and others. I would download whatever humor I could find from a.r.s. and the web pages, and I would sing often these songs to him, or read him the funny anti-Scientology posts that you all wrote. And that’s how several of you really cheered him terrifically during his many surgical procedures, hospitalizations, setbacks, and chemo. So thank you all for him. He really loved it.”

1995: Helena Kobrin, lawyer in charge of harassment for Scientology, was busy this week sending threatening letters to a.r.s posters for quoting 5 lines from the OT7 document. New recipients this week include Bruce J. Bell, Blind Carlos, Maggie Council, ‘Jesse Garon’, James J. Lippard, Old Salt, Doctorb Science, Tony Sidaway, Tim Skirvin, Keith Spurgeon, Steve, Donna Stuckert, and TarlaStar. Letters were also sent to several Internet Service Providers. Henry posted: “After the threat to me was extended to my sysadmin, I have canceled all messages which contain ‘fair use’ reproduction of the six lines of OT VII which I have quoted.” Andrew Burt, sysadmin of Henry’s site explains his response: “I also explained to her that, if she could supply me with absolute proof that you violated the law, I would revoke your account (per standard Nyx terms). I did explain that the proof needed to be convincing, not just her word against yours. Toward that end, I indicated that a court judgment against you would be an example of such convincing proof.”

1995: An update on the charges against cos executives in Spain was posted this week. “In November of 1988, Heber Jentszch, president of the Church of Scientology International was detained along with 69 other Scientology officials. He was then arrested and imprisoned for approximately 30 days and later released on bail of close to one million dollars. He is now required to return to face the charges made by the state attorney in this case when it comes to trial. The scientologists face over 100 complaints ranging from fraud and coercion to illicit organization. The State Attorney will charge them with approximately 90 different illegal acts. Another named party in the case is the now head of the Office of Special Affairs or OSA, Mr. Kurt Weiland. Weiland, the object of a search and detention order by the Spanish police in 1983, was connected at that time to an alleged kidnapping as well as acts against dissident Scientologists in that country. It is also doubted that Weiland will present himself at the time of the trial as he has been named as a principal missionaire involved in some of the alleged illicit acts which caused the case to be
opened. A date for the trial has not yet been established.

1996: The Los Angeles Times published an article on Earthlink, the Internet provider founded by cult member Sky Dayton. “EarthLink’s expansion, however, has so far been privately funded by an eclectic mix of investors, including El Dorado Ventures, a venture capitalist firm; Warren Musser, president of Safeguard Scientific; and National Media Corp., an infomercial production company. Discussions on Internet news groups such as la.general and alt.religion.scientology and a World Wide Web site have focused on Dayton’s affiliation with the church – and on the actions of another Earthlink employee in battling church critics on the Internet. Dayton acknowledges that at the beginning, a large portion of EarthLink employees were Scientologists. With the company’s growth, though, the proportion has fallen to a small fraction, he says. Earthlink also used Hubbard management techniques in its early days. Dayton says the Hubbard methods are secular and have nothing to do with the religion of Scientology, and that in any case they are no longer in use at the company.”

David Miscavige’s nod to John Travolta debunks another tabloid ‘leaving Scientology’ fantasy

Earlier this year, the Daily Mail proposed that because flight data showed that Tom Cruise had not flown his helicopter into East Grinstead in the last three years, it suggested that Cruise was no longer visiting Scientology’s UK headquarters there at Saint Hill Manor, and so he appeared to be leaving Scientology itself.

This assumption was made without checking with any former high level Scientologists, who might have explained to the Daily Mail that since the beginning of the pandemic, Scientology leader David Miscavige himself had not been visiting Saint Hill, and Tom Cruise’s number one loyalty is to Miscavige, so his not flying there probably meant very little.

Instead, other publications jumped on the the Daily Mail’s observation and announced that it was a settled matter: Tom Cruise had left Scientology. On August 27 we pointed out how ludicrous this was, and then on November 3 we got a little vindication: Tom Cruise was spotted flying his helicopter to Saint Hill for the resumption of the IAS Gala and the return of David Miscavige.

The next night, at the Patrons Ball, Cruise made a more public showing of himself with his fellow Scientologists than we’ve seen probably since 2004, when he picked up his Freedom Medal of Valor. Photos of him mugging with other attendees of the Patrons Ball proliferated on social media, to the point that we suspected it was actually encouraged by the church itself. (No photos of Miscavige, for example, were leaked from either night.)

We only saw a little recognition by those websites that had announced Tom’s departure now admitting that he was as dedicated as ever, which is what we’ve been saying all along.

And, you know, they might have learned a little lesson this time.

Oh no they didn’t.

Last week, the National Enquirer and Radar, and even Yahoo jumped in with a new theory: Tom might have been at the event, but John Travolta wasn’t, so that suggests that Travolta is leaving Scientology.

Come on, people.

Once again, these stories relied on unnamed anonymous sources, when there are plenty of former high-ranking Scientologists who would be happy to be consulted on such a story.

We can tell you from our own experience that we’ve been watching the annual IAS galas very closely for many years, and we don’t remember John Travolta ever showing up at one. So the fact that he didn’t attend this one really doesn’t mean anything at all. [UPDATE: Axiom 142 remembers seeing Travolta attend one IAS gala around 2004, so about one attendance in the last 20 years.]

And now, we have evidence to the opposite, that Travolta is still firmly in the fold.

With Alex Barnes-Ross, yesterday we made public the entire three-hour speech by David Miscavige from the first night of the IAS weekend. And about two thirds of the way into it, as Miscavige was boasting about the accomplishments by Scientology “Volunteer Ministers” at the sites of international disasters, he uttered this paragraph…

“Florida hurricane Ian slams the southwest coast making landfall at Category Four. But IAS Freedom Medal winner John Travolta airlifts urgent provisions for utterly decimated communities, whereupon Florida’s megaforce of VMs takes over distribution, relieving stranded families everywhere, all to help 5,000 get back on solid ground.”

This was surprising, not only because Miscavige normally doesn’t mention the church’s celebrities during these speeches (again, we’ve listened to a lot of them), but also because we know that Travolta is not one of David Miscavige’s favorite people, and he does not have the same kind of relationship with him that he does with Cruise.

“Miscavige is always ready throw shade on JT to make sure Tom knows he is the number one favorite horse in the stable,” Mike Rinder tells us. And if he would not normally give Travolta a shout-out during one of these speeches, Dave probably included him this time because, “In the world of Scientology these days, ‘good news’ is hard to come by.”

Mike says that he wouldn’t be surprised if Miscavige and Cruise, while they were palling around at Saint Hill that weekend, “there were snide comments about JT between them.” But the point remains, that Miscavige did include Travolta in his speech, and that’s not something he would have done if Travolta had left the church.

Travolta’s loyalty has always been to L. Ron Hubbard, not Miscavige. And we have seen no evidence that he is pushing away, as the tabloids so desperately want to believe.

No doubt in the coming weeks, months, and years, we’ll hear again and again from the tabloids that Cruise or Travolta have “left” Scientology.

Not only is it lucrative clickbait for them, but we think they simply cannot or don’t want to understand how deeply these two celebrities feel connected to Scientology.

Travolta, we have been told by people who knew him well, ascribes all of his success to L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise, we were told by Jean Brousseau who worked very closely with him, worships David Miscavige like a god.

We’re going to need to see some much more convincing evidence than helicopter manifests or missed attendance at a gala before we’ll consider that either of these figures are walking away.

1998: Pickets were held in Clearwater, Florida this week to mark the 3rd anniversary of Lisa McPherson’s death at the Fort Harrison Hotel. Pickets were to be accompanied by bus ads. From the St. Petersburg Times: “Pinellas County’s transit chief pulled 10 buses off the road Sunday after the Church of Scientology complained that the vehicles’ side panels contained anti-Scientology advertising. The ads were purchased by church critics and were to be on buses Saturday through Monday as part of a weekend-long protest against Scientology. Each of the 11 ads carried a different message. Among them: ‘Think for Yourself. Quit Scientology,’ ‘Find out why so many people oppose Dianetics and Scientology’ and ‘Why does Scientology lie to its members?’ Scientology representatives began phoning the homes of transit and Clearwater city officials after the buses began rolling Saturday morning. The church argued that the ads violated a state law regarding published material that ‘tends to expose any individual or any religious group to hatred, contempt, ridicule or (abusive language).’ Rathbun said ads were part of ‘an unprecedented level of taunting’ against Scientologists. ‘I think they went out of bounds in terms of inciting hatred toward Scientologists and inciting Scientologists to react
in some fashion,’ he said. Had the church engaged in the same activity, it would have been skewered by the media, Rathbun said. ‘You might as well have no rights as far as we’re concerned.’ They were purchased by a group called Former Scientologists Speaking Out, which had its three-day advertising contract cut short, said Frank Oliver, a former Scientologist and a Scientology critic who heads the Miami graphics company that designed the ads. ‘None of those statements are inflammatory in any way,’ he said. ‘They don’t have a leg to stand on.’ Oliver said the group that placed the ads had not decided how to proceed. ‘Obviously the contract was violated, but I think our point was made,’ he said.”

Scientology boasts that it has more big donors than ever in new flier

[We’re learning more about Tom Cruise’s big night at the Patrons Ball]

We want to thank the reader who forwarded to us a flier they received from the New York Scientology org, which is planning on showing a video of the recent IAS Patrons Ball this Saturday.

Why is this significant? Well, in a number of ways we think, and we want to get your thoughts on it as well.

You already know that the annual IAS gala returned to Saint Hill Manor in East Grinstead, England on the weekend of November 3-5 for the first time since 2019. It’s traditionally one of Scientology’s big annual events, and it takes place under a big tent on the property.

The first night, on Friday, Scientology leader David Miscavige gives a big speech about how great everything is and how Scientology is expanding by leaps and bounds, and he then announces the year’s winners of “Freedom Medals.”

Normally, a week or two later video of this event is shown at Scientology’s other orgs around the world for those Scientologists who were unable to go to the event in person.

The second night of the event, on Saturday, is when everyone dresses in black tie and Miscavige recognizes the year’s biggest donors. This is known as the Patrons Ball, it’s a smaller affair, and video of this event is not normally shown to the rest of the orgs in subsequent weeks.

But this year is different. We’re learning that video of the Patrons Ball has been showing up at the orgs, typically a week after the Friday night event was shown.

And another difference this time was that actor Tom Cruise not only made the scene (as he has in the past), but that his involvement was so public, with many photos of him mugging with his fellow Scientologists getting out to social media.

What this flier tells us is that the Patrons Ball video will be shown at the New York org this Saturday, and that it’s for the first time ever. This just wasn’t done in past years.

So not only has David Miscavige, post-pandemic, returned the IAS event to England, he wants the rest of the Scientology world to see him handing out trophies to this year’s biggest donors, which he has not done in past years.

Also, the flier makes this claim about that night of trophies: “It’s also a record-breaker, with the highest number of Patrons ever acknowledged on stage at an IAS Ball.”

Oh really? We’d definitely like to see some images of that.

We’ve pointed out in recent years that although everything we’ve seen indicates that Scientology’s membership is still dwindling, Miscavige is somehow still getting more and more wealthy people to make huge, $1 million-plus donations to the IAS war chest. How does he do it?

1995: An anonymous story was posted this week concerning the ‘joke’ of R2-45, the procedure described by Hubbard to shoot an enemy of the HCG in the head with a .45 pistol. “He once told us how he and Otto Roos had been sent on an ‘R2-45 mission’ by the Commodore, against Chuck Berner and his Abilitism splinter group. They were quite willing to carry it out if necessary, but when they assessed Abilitism as not much of a threat, they suggested to LRH that he downgrade the mission. He agreed. Instead, they recruited LA Org students for a ‘third-rate burglary’ (my phrase), in which they broke into the Abilitism center, stole the E-meters, and trashed the rest.”

Tom Cruise goes black tie for Scientology at ‘Patrons Ball’ in England

What a weekend Scientology had!

The return of the International Association of Scientologists gala to Scientology’s UK headquarters — Saint Hill Manor in East Grinstead, England — after a four year absence was more than even we had dared to dream. It had everything, from the triumphant return of Scientology’s leader, David Miscavige, to the dramatic entrance his buddy Tom Cruise made in a helicopter.

And of course, our hats were off Friday night as we talked with Alex Barnes-Ross about his march and protest that day, and we’ll have more from him about the ensuing days later. But we thought this morning we would just focus on Scientology’s big showing, and to get your thoughts about what photos from the event are suggesting.

Friday night, the opening night of the three-day party, is Dave’s big show, when he regales the crowd with an hours-long speech about the state of Scientology, and recognizes a few Scientologists with Freedom Medals.

Dharma and Greg actress Jenna Elfman and her husband Bodhi showed off their outfits that night, and we were interested to see that she was not only going to emcee the Sunday night charity concert but attend all three nights of the event. What a trooper!

As for the venue itself, on Friday night they bring in the biggest crowd they possibly can, and every year it’s been fun trying to assess how many people they actually put in the big tent on the Saint Hill grounds.

One attendee helpfully used her smartphone to film her journey to her chair early on Friday night when the place was not yet very full. And we were surprised to see from her footage that the place seemed less cavernous than we had expected.

Another shot taken by someone else gives the view toward the back of the tent. We have always scoffed at the attendance figures that Scientology puts out, as many as 7,000 some years.

This year they told police they were expecting 6,000. But looking at the size of this place, we’re thinking it holds more like 2,500, right?

The only image we’ve seen so far of Dave on stage giving his big speech Friday was pretty blurry. Let us know if you’ve spotted a better one.

On Saturday, the rows of chairs were cleared out and tables were put in for the fancy Patrons Ball dinner as guests dressed up in black tie.

Jenna and Bodhi were prepared.

And it looks like guests enjoyed some interesting delicacies.

But of course the main dish was really Tom Cruise himself, who showed up in dozens of photos that we’ve seen, happy to pose with his fellow Scientologists at the ball.

The point of Saturday night’s banquet is to pay tribute to Scientology’s big donors, who are given new bowling trophies for the big amounts they’ve given the IAS in the last year. And so Tom is really a dessert treat for them, an incentive to give giving more and more of their cash. And what an incentive!

It was interesting to see that one of the attendees mugging with Tom was French attorney Philippe Blanchetier, who was indicted in 2015 along with a dozen others with former President Nicolas Sarkozy in a campaign finances corruption scandal, and these days is known for representing Russian oligarchs in trouble. Did anyone know he was a Scientologist?

We also noticed that the Florida electricity duo, Tom Cummins and Jim Bridgeforth, who together are the biggest Scientology donors behind Bob and Trish Duggan, were in attendance, and Tom did not disappoint with his sartorial splendor. As Mike Rinder pointed out, however, he was there with his daughter and not with his wife Victoria, who always puts on such a fashionable show. We hope she’s fine.

Mike also spotted one of our favorite church members, the Scientology oversharer! She was there with her man, and don’t they look great.

All in all, Saturday night’s banquet looked like a blast, and we’re looking forward to seeing some trophies in the next issue of Impact magazine.

On Sunday night, it was time for the charity concert.

We’re glad to see that our old friend Chill EB is looking rather prosperous these days.

1995: Jeff Jacobsen provided a summary of the Cult Awareness Network Conference held last week in White Plains, NY. “About 270 attended and about a dozen Scientologists hung around the hotel bugging people. Early Friday morning Snipe and I set up his computer in the book sale room and gave an internet demonstration during the day. I think we made several converts to the net there. At supper CAN officials told that they have filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy (this is to reorganize, not dissolve) in order to win time to appeal the Jason Scott decision against CAN. There is also a CAN lawsuit against Scientology and Bowles & Moxon I think on conspiracy charges based on the 46 lawsuits that Moxon apparently boilerplated against CAN. The lunch speaker was Dan Leipold, attorney for Tom Klemesrud. He gave a general outline of the internet and the copyright wars going on in our little newsgroup. The Scientologists generally hung out in the hallways of the hotel and tried to engage people in a discussion or hand them a CAN dead agent pack (this is the one that included Kim Baker’s declaration). Huheyniaman, that foul-mouthed anonymous poster that I outed several months ago, sat down by me at the hotel lounge and very weakly apologized to me for the things he said (thus 100% certifying that my fingering him was correct) and I weakly accepted his semi-apology. Later on he told me that he hopes we all give a lot of $ to CAN so Jason Scott can collect his million dollars. John Carmichael tried talking to me about how wimpy our picketing efforts have been, and BTW about 6 Scientologists picketed for just a few hours in front of the hotel. Another Scientologist told me that she has never seen any fair gaming going on and the church to her view only does good works. I talked with her about 10 minutes.”

Scientology protest goes off without a hitch, and Tom Cruise made the scene

We hope you joined our live conversation yesterday afternoon with Alex Barnes-Ross, who was in an East Grinstead pub and told us about his adventures protesting at Scientology’s UK headquarters.

It was not only a demonstration that had a coherent message, impressive signage, and smart planning, but it garnered press interest, including a team from Daily Mail that took some good photos.

If you didn’t see our post-game panel, you can catch it below as we were also joined by Chris Shelton, who helped us put Alex’s success in perspective.

Not only had the demonstration gone the way Alex planned it, and not only did he get some interesting reactions from the Scientologists on their way into the event, but one of them, a certain Tom Cruise, also made the scene.

When Alex told us that yesterday, we thought he was joking. But he was not!

When a helicopter appeared overhead during the protest, Alex said the Daily Mail journalists with him checked the aircraft’s identification number and it turned out it was Tom’s whirlybird.

Now, we’re especially happy that it was the Daily Mail that got this scoop, because it’s the Mail that earlier this year published what we described as perhaps the lamest ever “Tom-Cruise-is-leaving-Scientology” claptrap, and it was also based on his helicopter.

The Mail’s entertainment gossip columnist pointed to the fact that airport data showed that Tom had not flown his helicopter into East Grinstead in three years to conclude that he was leaving Scientology, even though the one fact did not follow the other. We pointed out that the columnist had not even bothered to check with someone like Mike Rinder or Claire Headley before announcing that Tom’s lack of trips to Saint Hill meant he was leaving the church.

It didn’t mean that, of course, and when we pointed it out the columnist responded to us on Facebook and said that she was also convinced Tom might be leaving Scientology because the church never got back to her. That was her “confirmation.”

The sad part was that so many publications then leaped on the story and announced that it was now settled fact that Tom had left the church. So what are they going to do now that the opposite has proved to be true?

Of course Cruise showed up for his buddy Dave. This is a very big moment for the Scientology leader, and remember what Jean Brousseau told us more than a decade ago: “Tom Cruise worships David Miscavige like a god.”

Tom proved that again last night, and we look forward to the other things we’re going to learn about how this weekend went for C.O.B. under the big tent.

According to a presentation by the department director in the Hamburg Interior Agency, Scientologists are gaining more new members from private companies and government agencies through institutions of continuing education and training. According to the Giessen’s executive presidium, it has tried to prevent this form of infiltration for about one and a half years in its contracts.
