1996: An update was posted concerning Bonnie Woods and Ron Lawley, both UK critics under legal attack from the cult. “Bonnie Woods now has 1 libel suit from Narconon, 1 counter suit from COSRECI, 1 libel suit against COSRECI and now COSRECI have brought another libel suit against Bonnie and Richard for the distribution of the FUSS leaflet. This was the leaflet handed out outside orgs around the UK in July of last year, asking people to watch the Big Story TV programme. I [Lawley] am still waiting for my hearing before the Court of Appeal regarding whether I have ‘locus standi’ which will decide whether I, as a bankrupt, have the right to defend the appeal against me being given the NOTs materials, as was ordered by Judge Sumner. The hearing date could be any time now so we just sit and wait. I am helping Bonnie and Richard get through these 4 libel actions. Sometimes I spend 30 hours a week on the paperwork and the hardship fund covers expenses for all our cases. So please thank people once again for the assistance which will enable all these cases to come to court. At the moment I see no reason why we should lose. So thanks again to all SPs everywhere.”

— ‘Lafayette Ronald Hubbard’ (a/k/a Justin Craig), aggravated assault, plus drug charges: Grand jury indictments include charges from an assault while in custody. Pleaded guilty on Nov 10 to a 17-year prison sentence (eligible for parole in two to three more years). Awaiting transfer to state prison.
— Aaron Matthes charged for SA of child under 12 years old: OT Scientologist facing multiple mandatory life sentences. Next pretrial court hearing set for March 9.

2001: The Chicago Tribune reported on the death of Hope Hinde, one of the early supporters of the original Cult Awareness Network. “Hope Buckner Hinde, 86, who helped found an anti-cult group and led parent-teacher associations at three Highland Park schools before moving to Lake Forest, died Sunday, April 15, in Lake Forest Hospital after a stroke. Born in New York City, Mrs. Hinde earned a master’s degree from Columbia University and worked as a social worker for Catholic charities. Mrs. Hinde helped found the Cult Awareness Network in 1979 after a friend’s daughter joined a cult.”

1998: The St. Petersburg Times reported that the Clearwater City Manager, Mike Roberto has had recent meetings with David Miscavige. “[They had] A four-hour meeting Monday in which the two men discussed the church’s downtown expansion plans and the recent flare-ups that led to tensions between the city and Scientology. Monday’s meeting took place at Scientology’s Clearwater Building, 500 Cleveland St. The previous meeting took place the first week of April at the Fort Harrison Hotel, the church’s landmark retreat. According to Roberto, he and Miscavige discussed: The church’s planned 300,000-square-foot office and counseling building, which would be one of the larger office buildings in Pinellas County. Some of the history of Scientology in Clearwater – from the church’s controversial arrival in 1975 to the hostility that flared up in December when church officials demanded an investigation into the city Police Department, threatened legal action and orchestrated a protest march around police headquarters by an estimated 3,000 Scientologists. Details about Scientology’s teachings and organizational structure. Roberto, who became city manager in June, said he knew little about the church. He said the meeting was an occasion ‘to get to know them more.’ He added: ‘I think it was important for them to explain and articulate what some of their concerns were. . . . There has to be a resolution somewhere and it has to come from both sides.’ Roberto said he told Miscavige it was ‘completely unacceptable’ for Scientologists ‘to be out there protesting against the city of Clearwater’ in December. As for the church’s demands for an investigation into the Police Department, Roberto said he told Miscavige: ‘Until someone produces some piece of information … of us doing something illegal, I have nothing to go on.’ He said Miscavige made the point that no Scientologist had ever been arrested in Clearwater despite two decades of investigative effort by the police. According to Roberto, Miscavige did not discuss the case of Lisa McPherson, the 36-year-old Scientologist who died in 1995 after spending 17 days at the Fort Harrison. He said he learned in the meeting with Miscavige that the Fort Harrison Hotel, after years of being partly tax-exempt because of the church’s non-profit status, will be 100 percent taxable after the new building opens. That’s because offices in the hotel now used for church counseling will be moved to the new building.”

1997: Dennis Erlich reported that Scientology is now required to produce, among other things, some of the documents concerning the transfer of advanced materials from L. Ron Hubbard to Scientology, witnessed by Notary Public David Miscavige. “On April 1 Magistrate Infante issued the following order granting my expedited motion to compel the scienos compliance (within 5 days) with his (Infante’s) prior order to produce a number of documents: poodleboy’s notary log book; income statements relating to sakrid droppings; every folder relating to me. In addition, the court finds that Plaintiffs’ failure to comply with this court’s previous order was without substantial justification. Therefore, on its own motion, the court orders RTC and BPI to reimburse counsel for Defendant Erlich for reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs incurred in bringing this motion. Based on the moving papers filed, the court determines that reasonable fees and costs are $850, which amount RTC and BPI collectively shall pay to counsel for Defendant Erlich within 7 days of the date of this order.”

Members can pay thousands of dollars to complete all their courses, in payments that are called donations, but are in fact obligatory. Few churches prompt more antagonism than this one. A Greek judge has called scientology dangerous. The German government says that its financial demands can read to ruin and even suicide. But here in America, critics are more concerned with the Church of Scientology’s relentless bid, for public recognition. David Rodier is a professor of religion at American University. ‘They feel if you attack they attack in kind, and perhaps even more violently. And I think many people find this very threatening. New religions are by their very nature strange and odd, and we feel uncomfortable around them. And then when they, in addition to that, don’t behave according to our stereotypes the way religions should behave, then we _do_ get very uncomfortable.’ Sylvia Stanard: ‘The church has dealt with criticism, because we feel that people need to know what scientology is. And its also just – sociologically it is a very interesting phenomena that all new religions go through this. 2002: Dave Bird reported a protest at the Birmingham, England org. “Just Dave, Jens, and John plus our sound system this time. The DSA appeared and wanted to tie us up talking to waste our time. Apparently they had done so well that week, they didn’t need to leaflet today. The true reason was apparent around 14:00, the Reg and her assistant had been leafleting the Palestine rally in the library square about 150 metres up the street from us. We finished after 2 hours dead and went to a pub just round the corner on the other side. The DSA and his side-kick followed us to the pub and stood across the road for twenty minutes then went away.” Christopher Wood reported a protest at the Toronto, Canada org. “Picketers: Me, Gregg Hagglund, Keith Henson, and The Unknown Picketer. Leaflets: We passed out approximately 500. My No Science/Scn Founder Con Man, Gregg’s Xenu/crimes, a couple of Kirsti Wachter’s ‘Scientology Hurts People,’ and some about the Children’s Sec Check. The picket went for about three hours. The Scientologists who do the picket handling stayed quiescent, so we managed to picket unmolested. I ran out of the 50 leaflets that I started out with. I ended up reading to one couple this paragraph from A History of Man, which clearly illustrates L. Ron Hubbard’s disturbing attitude towards the world: ‘This universe is a rough universe. It is a terrible and deadly universe. Only the strong survive it, only the ruthless can own it. Given one weak spot a being cannot long endure it for this universe will search it out and enlarge it and fester and probe it until that weak spot is a festering wound so large that the being is engulfed by his own sores.’ A group of three Scientologists came out the front door and Mario rushed over, saying ‘Go out the back! Go out the back!’ – and what do you know, they did as he said. A line of non-OT Scientologists, moving out the back door of the org, getting waved along by OT Scientologists, and serenaded by Gregg’s ‘Doubt is not a crime’ spiel. Gregg reports that the herdees appreciated this more than the herders. It seems fairly certain that we were followed home on the drive back. A white car stayed pretty close right from leaving the parking lot near the org.”

1998: The St. Petersburg Times ran a story this week on Scientology’s growing attempts to influence Washington politics. “After years of holding the U.S. government in contempt, the Church of Scientology is enlisting members of Congress, the U.S. State Department and even President Clinton to advance its agenda in foreign lands. Prodded by the Scientologists’ paid lobbyists and its cadre of sympathetic entertainers, several lawmakers and the Clinton administration have criticized the German government for allegedly discriminating against Scientology practitioners. They even got their argument against Germany to the floor of the House of Representatives last November. The lobbying push comes amid an ongoing criminal investigation into a suspicious death of one of its parishioners at Scientology’s Clearwater headquarters – the latest in a history of controversy involving the church. That history includes convictions of 11 Scientologists on charges stemming from break-ins of government offices in the 1970s. Scientology has used lobbyists in Washington in the past, but in the years since the IRS ruling the organization has stepped up its lobbying effort. Records made public last week show that Religious Technology Center, a Scientology affiliate in Los Angeles, paid almost $725,000 to a Washington-based firm to lobby Congress in 1997 and 1996. David H. Miller, the managing partner of Federal Legislative Associates, said members of Congress initially were skeptical about his client and its checkered past. ‘What I’ve said to members is, ‘That’s all bulls—. That’s all extraneous. Let’s talk about the facts,’ he recalled, though he concedes: ‘What they are trying to do is live down some of their past mistakes.’ Miller, 50, is a former congressional aide who has been a lobbyist for 18 years. He and his firm represent clients such as the American Bankers Association and American Airlines. He is not, he said, a Scientologist. Miller, the lobbyist, said he has gradually tried to build a foundation of support that gives Scientologists’ claims of discrimination credence in Washington. The biggest victory in that regard has come from the U.S. State Department, which criticized the German government for its treatment of Scientologists in its annual human-rights report.”

2001: Keith Henson posted an update on the legal situation of attorney Graham Berry, a long-time opponent of Scientology. “The clams got Graham’s car by assuring a bankruptcy judge that his 14 year old jeep, bald tires, marginal brakes, electrical problems, and water leaks would sell for $6700. Since in bankruptcy you can’t have a car worth more than $1900, they will sell it at auction to some public scn and give Graham $1900. There is a deposition of Donald Wager; in it he admits to a string of criminal actions in the Hurtado v. Berry case and related. Wager admits paying a street person in jail for false testimony and being paid back by Moxon. He also talks about taking the street person’s false testimony to the Sheriff in an attempt to get Graham arrested.”

2000: The Guardian published an article on the battle on the Internet against Scientology. “August 12 1995 was a Saturday much like any other in the urban sprawl of Arlington, Virginia. Except that an alert went out over email and on Usenet groups to say that 10 people – including two federal marshals, two computer technicians, one a former FBI agent, and several attorneys – were raiding the home of former Scientologist Arnaldo Lerma. Leading the raid was Helena Kobrin, a senior lawyer representing the Church of Scientology. She was well known on the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology, due to her frequent postings which insisted on the deletion of files she claimed contained the Church’s copyrighted materials. Lerma was distraught. Many of his personal and business files were kept on his PC. Told that his hardware would be returned the following Monday, he was still waiting weeks later. There had been other raids in the US and further afield, including on an anonymous remailer run by Johan Helsingius in Finland, as the Church pursued anyone it felt was posting ‘secret’ materials. Such confrontations are continuing – albeit in more subtle form – as pro- and anti-cultists struggle for control of the ‘truth’ over the net. On the Church of Scientology’s slick official site you can take a personality test online (although you have to meet someone in person to receive the results) and visit links to more than 15,000 Scientologists. Said one British opponent of Scientology: ‘The battle between Scientology and its opponents has been absolutely transformed by the net.’ As writer William Shaw, author of Spying In Guru Land, explains, the main reason that the Church of Scientology has a large internet presence is the high net profile of its opponents. ‘The CoS is very proficient at the internet now, but I believe that was only responding to very successful anti-Scientology sites on the web in the early 90s.’ Much of the background to the war between Scientologists and their detractors can be seen at Operation Clambake set up by Andreas Heldal-Lund in Norway in 1996. One of the incidents he highlights was last year when Amazon.com dropped Jon Atack’s book A Piece Of Blue Sky, which was critical of Scientology’s teachings. There was a massive outcry from netizens and free speech advocates, and Amazon promptly reversed its decision. The site also outlines how, in 1998, Scientologists were issued with filtering software to prevent them visiting anti-Scientology sites. Roger Gonnet, an anti-Scientology activist running a web site based in France, says: ‘My two sites were attacked three times each, the first with three attorneys in a row, attacking my ISP too. They even tried to attack under the guise of ‘violation of trade secrets’ which is a strong thing for a ‘religion’.’ ‘For many years, the Church of Scientology has taken action to protect its scriptures from abuse,’ says a spokesperson. ‘It is in pursuit of its First Amendment right of free religious exercise that the Church has brought legal action to enforce existing copyright and trade secrets laws on the internet.'”
