1997: The St. Petersburg Times published a letter from Scientologist Pat Jones, denying that Scientology is a bad neighbor for Clearwater, Florida. “Through a series of free concerts in our beautifully restored Clearwater building, dances for the general public in the Fort Harrison’s Crystal Ballroom, or through the snowy Winter Wonderland, our Dianetics Road Races or our many other events, we have brought life to downtown. Crime downtown has been noticeably lowered due to our presence here, a fact that has been told to us many times by elderly residents who now consider the downtown safe. Due to the church’s presence in Clearwater, the area receives more than $60-million in direct spending each year. That includes spending by the church, its staff, the more than 1,500 visiting Scientologists who are here at any given time who are active tourists, and the other 3,500 to 4,000 permanent residents of Clearwater who are members of the church. These people contribute a great deal to both the economy of Clearwater and its way of life. Scientologists volunteer in local drug and criminal rehabilitation programs, they serve as Boy and Girl Scout troop leaders, and they work on the church’s annual events such as its Easter Egg Hunt and Summer Crafts Festival, as well as many other non-Scientology programs. The residents of Clearwater, who are in the know and who really care about this town and the state of its downtown, remark constantly on the fact that the church fixes up its buildings to a standard far beyond what is expected of this area, that church staff, parishioners and visiting Scientologists are clean, drug-free and ethical, and that you couldn’t ask for better citizens.”

— ‘Lafayette Ronald Hubbard’ (a/k/a Justin Craig), aggravated assault, plus drug charges: Grand jury indictments include charges from an assault while in custody. Pleaded guilty on Nov 10 to a 17-year prison sentence (eligible for parole in two to three more years). Awaiting transfer to state prison.
— Aaron Matthes charged for SA of child under 12 years old: OT Scientologist facing multiple mandatory life sentences. Next pretrial court hearing set for March 9.

— Chrissie Bixler et al. v. Scientology and Danny Masterson. Judge Upindra Kalra’s ruling denying Scientology’s motion to strike is on appeal. Appeal fully briefed. Motion to replace Jane Does’ AI-tainted brief denied by court. Oral arguments hearing on March 3.

“In 1948 I wrote a thesis on an elementary technique of application and submitted it to the medical and psychiatric professions for their use or consideration. The data was not utilized. In 1950, I issued a popular book on the subject called Dianetics. The Modern Science of Mental Health. The book, much to the astonishment of myself and everyone else, became a best seller immediately and still sells regularly. Other books followed. The address of Dianetics and Scientology is not to the ill, the insane or the criminal. It is effective in these fields. But its intention is toward the improvement of the able. Men who already can accomplish things can accomplish more. The problems of the society depend upon clear-thinking and sane men. Processing can bring about that state according to long experience. Processing has now become relatively simple. The auditor first must understand the basic axioms of the subject and their meaning in processing. He must have a good grasp of his essential tools. 1995: The Associated Press reported this week that the Chilocco Development Authority has turned over the former Indian school to the Bureau of Indian Affairs rather than continue to deal with Narconon, the Scientology detoxification program. “But Wanda Stone, chairwoman of the Kaw Tribe, said her tribal council approved the move because it was tired of dealing with Narconon Chilocco New Life Center, a substance abuse treatment facility that has a 25-year lease on the site. ‘We decided we didn’t have time to mess with them,’ Ms. Stone said. The tribes had expected to receive a total of $16 million over 25 years when they signed the lease with Narconon five years ago. But Stone said the facility has only about 75 of the expected 1,000 beds. ‘We would get checks maybe every quarter for $2,500,’ she said. ‘We decided we had more important things to do.'”

2000: Bob Minton was awarded the Alternate Charlemagne award on June 3rd for his efforts against Scientology’s abuse of human rights. The award was given by a committee of Europeans and Americans. Excerpts from the acceptance speech: “I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the Alternative Charlemagne Award. It is very moving to receive this award in Leipzig, where freedom was reborn in the former East Germany. Today in Leipzig, we are in the shadows of the famous St. Nikolai Church, where the cry for freedom in East Germany began with a handful of people that grew to hundreds and then hundreds of thousands shouting for freedom in the streets surrounding this very building where we are now gathered. The State no longer makes life’s major decisions for the citizens in the old Eastern Europe who must now utilize their new freedoms to become self-sufficient and self-determined individuals. It is no accident that in such a vacuum, those individuals who have never been willing to accept the responsibility that freedom brings have allowed themselves to be recruited into organizations like Scientology. Scientology offers a replacement for the former Communist regimes that promises real freedom while in actuality creating an apparatus of coercion that dominates and terrorizes humans from within. Throughout America’s short history, there has never been any time in which groups or even the government itself hasn’t tried to expand their authority and control at the expense of individual rights and liberties. Scientology is just such an extremist group which adamantly refuses to accept the basic principles underlying the Bill of Rights. Their outright attacks on our most fundamental liberties threatens to do permanent damage to the Bill of Rights which is the bedrock of America’s traditions of fairness, equality, decency and ultimately justice. The Lisa McPherson Trust opened our Clearwater office in January of this year, and in the nearly six months since we have been there it have become clear just how vital it is to have such an organization in the United States opposing Scientology. We have found that there is a tremendous need amongst Scientology victims and their families for our services. We have also seen that it is vitally important for us to counter the efforts of Scientology in Washington, D.C., and because of this we plan to open another office of the Lisa McPherson Trust in Washington within the next year. The purpose of our D.C. office will be to educate our government about Scientology and get our government working with the governments of Germany, France, and other countries who recognize the danger of Scientology. In order to better coordinate this worldwide effort within the United States, we plan to open offices of the Lisa McPherson Trust in Germany, France, and perhaps one or two other countries within the next year. This Bible was given to me last night by a friend and I would like to read a special passage which my friend selected. It is Psalms 71 verse 13. It reads ‘May my accusers perish in shame. Let those who want to harm me be covered with scorn and disgrace.’ But, God is compassionate; and the people at the top of Scientology who perpetrate this evil are people that all of us would welcome when they leave this organization. I would be happy to help them too.”

1998: Neal Hamel reported that Craig Miller, a former Scientologist and a.r.s poster, took his life this week. “Craig was found dead in his home. He had taken his own life. Craig contributed a only few posts a year ago or so, and probably is not remembered by the people who read this newsgroup. Craig was one of the people who helped me see that homosexual ‘orientation’ was most probably biological in nature. You see, Craig spent at least $50,000 dollars at scientology’s so-called technical headquarters in Clearwater trying to become a heterosexual so he could continue on in scientology. In scientology, homosexual activities are considered ‘out-ethics’ and people who are ‘out-ethics’ cannot get scientology services. Craig found out he had AIDS about 6 years ago and so he left work and did some travelling and even got around flying some ultra-light aircraft. However depression was a recurring problem as his physical condition varied. Eventually the depression overcame him and he’s gone now. He was a good man who was a friend and who helped me many times and I will miss him.”

1997: The Tampa Tribune this week published an article on the worldwide attention being given to the Lisa McPherson investigation. Lisa died in the care of Scientology’s Flag Land Base in Clearwater, Florida. “Since December, people around the world have been intrigued by reports of the death of Scientologist Lisa McPherson. In Australia, Canada and England, critics of the Church of Scientology have invoked McPherson’s name during protests. Arizona critic Jeff Jacobsen designed a Web site devoted to McPherson that has been duplicated to 18 different sites around the world. He and others protested against Scientology in downtown Clearwater in March. Some in the group carried signs with McPherson’s photo or her name. Ken Dandar, the Tampa attorney for McPherson’s family, said he is ‘constantly getting e-mail’ from people around the world interested in the lawsuit. Clearwater police Detective Sgt. Wayne Andrews, who is investigating the death, has received Internet mail from Germany, Greece, England, Australia, Mexico and Switzerland from people asking about the investigation or wanting to relate tales about Scientology. Interest is particularly high in Germany, where the government has concluded Scientology is not a church but a dangerous business. ‘After having conducted thorough studies on the Scientology organization, the [German] government has come to the conclusion that the organization’s pseudo-scientific courses can seriously jeopardize individuals’ mental and physical health and that it exploits its members,’ the German government said in a statement through its embassy in Washington, D.C. In the United States, McPherson’s death has attracted the attention of the Tampa Bay media, as well as The Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and ‘Inside Edition’ and ‘Hard Copy’ television shows. In Clearwater, investigators say their efforts to gather information in the case have been slowed because all of the church-affiliated people they’ve sought to interview have attorneys. That includes McPherson’s former co-workers at AMC Publishing, which is owned by Scientologists. All in all, some 50 to 60 people who have been interviewed have been represented by up to 21 attorneys, police say. Subpoenas have been issued for 30 to 40 of those people. The clients have not disclosed who is paying for the attorneys. In response to a subpoena, the church has provided some records relating to McPherson. ‘I consider them significant,’ Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe said. Investigators will not discuss the documents. McPherson’s family members are suing the church, claiming its members are responsible for her death. Dandar, their attorney, says he also has the subpoenaed documents, which he describes as an incomplete set of church ‘medical records’ that ‘support all of our allegations.'”

1996: Dennis Erlich’s case is proceeding, despite an attempt by Scientology to link it to the Grady Ward case. “Yesterday Judge Whyte issued a slap in the face to the scienos in an order which refused to move back the hearing date or link the Erlich and Grady cases. Whyte’s comments in the order were something like ‘different cases, different people, different issues’. He also said (paraphrased) ‘Mr. Erlich is probably interested in bringing this matter to a speedy conclusion.’ He didn’t sound at all amused. You don’t think after all this time he could actually be concerned about my rights, do you? The hearing on June 10th at 10 am in San Jose Federal Court is on. I am planning on being in attendance to watch the MoFo-ing the scienos get.”

1995: Dennis Erlich reported new acts of harassment this week. JJ Gaw, Scientology investigator, visited his landlord, looking for dirt. Also, the company that holds the mortgage on Dennis’ house was hit for some documents, billed to the landlord. More random acts: “Two nights ago I noticed that the automatic lights in front of my house didn’t turn on when I approached. Checking the bulbs, I found them to have been screwed out 2 turns. Three weeks ago someone came by and sanded the street # off the curb in front of the house. No other houses on the block got this treatment.”
