LEAH REMINI: ‘Jackie Lacey, you have forgotten what side you are on’

[Actress Leah Remini and L. A.’s District Attorney, Jackie Lacey]

Last week we reported that a source close to Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey tells us that Lacey has no intention of charging Scientologist actor Danny Masterson even after a three-year LAPD investigation of rape allegations by a total now of six different women. If Masterson’s victims want to see him charged, our source told us, then they should hope that former San Francisco D.A. George Gascón unseats her in the March election that has her trying for a third term.

Yesterday, we pointed out that Gascón himself, in a tweet, indicated his interest in reviewing the Masterson allegations if he is elected.

And someone who’s been watching all this closely and has strong feelings about it is actress and former Scientologist Leah Remini, who made the allegations against Danny Masterson the centerpiece of the final episode of her three-season A&E series, Scientology and the Aftermath, which aired on August 26.

“Whether it is corrupt police officers or billionaires that Jackie Lacey has failed to prosecute, resulting in unnecessary loss of life or, in Danny Masterson’s case, an accused serial rapist being protected by a $3 billion cult, the Church of Scientology, Jackie Lacey has failed the city of Los Angeles,” Remini tells us.

Remini, who lives in Los Angeles County herself and will be voting in March, pointed us to a recent article that summed up criticisms of Lacey’s first two terms as D.A.:

Los Angeles still leads the country in law enforcement shooting deaths. And last year it had the second-highest death toll for police shootings in the nation after Phoenix, which had 21. Black residents are disproportionately victims—24 percent of the deaths but only 9 percent of the county’s population. And since 2000, only one member of law enforcement has been charged for killing a civilian….

Since taking office in 2012, Lacey hasn’t charged a single LAPD officer for a shooting. According to Black Lives Matter LA, over 400 people have been killed by law enforcement or died in custody in the county during Lacey’s tenure. But she has charged only one man, Luke Liu, a deputy in the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, for shooting an unarmed man while on duty….

At the same time, Lacey has not yet prosecuted Los Angeles notables accused of corruption and other crimes, like the Church of Scientology and the producer Harvey Weinstein, despite the formation of a task force to look into these cases. Her office didn’t charge billionaire Ed Buck for two fatal overdoses that occurred in his West Hollywood apartment (her office ultimately charged him for a third, non-fatal overdose in September), arguing recently that the Los Angeles sheriff’s department bungled the investigation. She didn’t prosecute a California Highway Patrol officer who repeatedly punched a homeless woman in July 2014. (The highway patrol settled with the family for $1.5 million.). And questions have come up about her campaign contributions, which have included the bail bonds industry, police unions, and people facing felony charges from her office.

Remini says her concerns about Lacey go beyond her failure to charge a Scientologist actor accused of being a sexual predator. In so many ways, she says, Lacey has proved to be a disaster.

“Jackie Lacey, you have failed Los Angeles, you have failed those who have been victimized and looked to to you for justice. It is clear you have forgotten what side you are on,” Remini says.

“It is time for you to go. My vote is for George Gascón.”

“You should have things which are motion sources in there. The level of truth of that universe ought to be good. You would BE faith in that universe; or your mock-ups, as far as faith is concerned, you would probably rely on a mock-up a heck of a lot quicker than you’d ever rely on a piece of MEST. I mean that seriously. You’d just rely on the mock-up. That’s not bad; if you can create a Cadillac which can outrun Cadillacs, I think you’d depend upon your Cadillac. Get the idea? But if you were really up at the top of the mock-up curve, you’ve made a Cadillac, you would drive your Cadillac much in preference to a Cadillac. You get the idea? It sounds strange, it sounds peculiar, but if you were doing that, and you really set out to make a Cadillac, yours would be a better Cadillac, for you.” — L. Ron Hubbard, December 11, 1952

“Thing is he knows that if Lou called up a restaurant or a movie theater and said ‘Mr. Miscavige would like to visit your establishment, could you please close for the evening to accommodate this,’ they would respond ‘Who?’ His frail ego couldn’t handle this. That’s why the only time he goes out is when he’s with Cruise.”
