We told you recently that we had heard some scary news about our old friend, Operation Clambake operator Andreas Heldal-Lund. At his Facebook account, he explained that he’d collapsed in a supermarket and had woken up in a hospital after having some kind of seizure.
Whatever it was, he had clearly been pushing himself too hard on the software engineering projects he’d been working on, and he let us know that he’s now taking some time off and enjoying the great outdoors. We were very glad to hear it.
But he was also still getting spam from Scientology, if you can believe that, which included some come-ons for its television channel, and Andreas forwarded them to us.
Among them was this, which let us know that two years later, Scientology is still begging members to send in videos about themselves to post on its website…
And since we were reminded of that, we thought, what the heck, we’ll update our tally of the videos.
Since April 30, 2020, Scientology has been posting about four new videos every day from members relating briefly how they’re getting on in the pandemic, but for us the value of these was that they give their location. As of this morning, Scientology has posted 3,381 of the videos, and we’ve tallied the locations of every one of them. And if that number sounds high, remember that Scientology claims to have millions of members around the world, and what they’ve actually posted is much more in agreement of what we’ve been saying for years, that the actual number of active membership is only in the tens of thousands, worldwide.
We know there are plenty of caveats to keep in mind here, but the larger the sample size grows, the more accurate a picture we may be getting about where Scientologists remain as the church dwindles. At least we’re getting to see where there are members who are motivated enough to make videos of themselves and send them in.
Here again are the top ten countries that the videos came from, updated to the latest total.

And here’s the full list of videos and their locations, now compiled for the 3,381 videos that had been uploaded as of this morning. And we’ll say it again: These numbers do not equal the number of Scientologists in those areas, just the number of Scientologists who submitted videos of themselves for the “At Home” program and that the church has selected to post on its website. We think the total number of active Scientologists is around 20,000, so with more than 3,300 videos posted, this may give us a good indication of where about fifteen percent of the overall membership is located, which is a substantial percentage.

1999: MSNBC reported on Scientologist John Coale’s relationship with the U.S. President. “John Coale, the high-profile Washington lawyer who has been behind several big anti-tobacco cases, continues to solidify his White House ties. Coale, and his high-profile wife, CNN commentator Greta van Susteren, are high-level Scientologists. Some say Coale is taking on certain cases to get closer to Clinton in his anti-tobacco cases and to further Scientology’s various causes. ‘No one ever accused John Coale of being dumb,’ says a source who has dealt with him often as an adversary. ‘His and Greta’s ties with the Clintons certainly don’t hurt them.'”
