On April 11 we broke the news that actor Eddie Deezen had been arrested again in Cumberland, Maryland, this time for burglary and trespassing. Three days later, TMZ added the detail that Eddie had pushed his way into a nursing home and refused to leave, resulting in the arrest.
According to the Maryland District Court website, on the day we first reported this latest arrest, Eddie was making his first appearance in court on the matter, and he was ordered held without bail. The next day, on April 12, an “Order for Outpatient Examination Competency to Stand Trial” was issued.
The docket then indicates that three days later, on April 15, the report of that examination by the Maryland Department of Health was received by the court.
Then, this past week Eddie qualified for representation by a public defender, who was appointed and made her first appearance on Wednesday, at Eddie’s scheduled competency hearing.
As a result of that hearing, according to the electronic docket, Eddie was committed to the Maryland Department of Health.
We have reached out to Eddie’s public defender, Jessica Colwell, to ask for details on this. How long might Eddie be committed while undergoing further evaluation? What’s his next step in the process?
We’ll let you know if we hear back from her.
Last June, we told you about the bizarre dustup between Eddie, a young waitress, and a restaurant in Cumberland, Maryland that resulted in the arrest of the Grease and Wargames actor, and his strange justifications for his behavior at his Facebook account.
Eddie, 65, has been a Scientologist for a very long time (since John Travolta got him interested in Dianetics while they were filming Grease in 1977), and he was most recently mentioned in a Scientology magazine as completing OT Preps in 2015. Eddie went Clear at some point around 1990.
He was known in more recent years for working the photo-and-signature circuit at conventions, and for being a shouty geezer on social media. But increasingly, he has been going a bit haywire.
As a longtime Scientologist, Eddie would be indoctrinated in the organization’s deep hatred and mistrust of the psychiatric profession. Even former Scientologists will tell you that it is very difficult to overcome that conditioning and seek counseling.
We hope Eddie can overcome his Scientology background and accept the help of the Maryland Department of Health.

2001: The Chicago Tribune reported on the death of Hope Hinde, one of the early supporters of the original Cult Awareness Network. “Hope Buckner Hinde, 86, who helped found an anti-cult group and led parent-teacher associations at three Highland Park schools before moving to Lake Forest, died Sunday, April 15, in Lake Forest Hospital after a stroke. Born in New York City, Mrs. Hinde earned a master’s degree from Columbia University and worked as a social worker for Catholic charities. Mrs. Hinde helped found the Cult Awareness Network in 1979 after a friend’s daughter joined a cult.”
