When going OT was the bomb: Testimonials about Scientology in its heyday

 
We recently came into possession of a remarkable cache of Scientology materials from the mid 1980s, and the condition they are in is pretty stunning. Some of this stuff looks like it just came from the printer.

A former member who was going through the “Operating Thetan” or OT levels at the time had the foresight to collect a lot of the stuff they were being inundated with by Scientology’s various divisions, and thought we might like to see it.

It provides a pretty great snapshot of Scientology in the years when sales of Dianetics were exploding thanks to the erupting volcano TV ad designed by Jefferson Hawkins, and a few years before the Time magazine cover story about the “thriving cult of greed and power” in 1991 that would mark the beginning of Scientology’s long, slow decline.

This collection of documents really captures Scientology in its heyday, and just before and immediately after the death of L. Ron Hubbard in January 1986.

We thought for this Sunday post, when we often take a look at Scientology propaganda in various forms, we’d focus on a slick pamphlet that promotes the OT levels to Scientologists by collecting a lot of testimonials from prominent church members at the time. We decided to share a few with you.

Norman Moe – “I had a great win on New OT I. I went outside and everything was extremely clear and bright. I felt super powerful. Later while driving down the street on my motorcycle I felt and knew that all other vehicles were acquiescing to my control. I pulled up to an intersection and by my intention stopped one vehicle and had another slow, and it was like they knew and agreed to the proper control. It felt very responsible.”

Jackie Harrison – “I had a wonderful win recently concerning New OT I. One day as I was reading a promo piece at home on New OT I a crystal clear comm line snapped into place with a guy who was auditing on his New OT I. This was a person who I have not as yet met this lifetime. Yet he contacted and handled an area of the track which we shared, and the clearest comm line I have ever had with another being was established. Ever since then, whenever I think of this guy or tell someone about the win the comm line goes back in and I’m aware of where he is and how he’s doing.”

Larry Hughes – “Last night I went to a reunion of old folk music friends of mine from the early sixties. I wasn’t even sure that I wanted to try to play with them, since I haven’t played guitar regularly for years. I have a beat up, cheap guitar that doesn’t hold a tune well, and I hadn’t tuned it in months. But when they started playing, I brought my guitar in from the car, and tuned it to the other instruments while they played twenty or thirty feet away. While I was talking to some people, I tuned my guitar perfectly in five minutes. I couldn’t do that years ago when I was playing regularly with a good guitar. Not only that, but my guitar stayed in tune for about two hours of hard playing, which is impossible. Anyway, it’s kind of a small win really, but it’s typical of the things I find myself doing these days. Basically, I guess I can do anything I decide to do. Life’s a lot of fun lately.”

Bruce Kobrin – “I am mid-auditing OT II. The strangest thing happened this morning. I was walking to a restaurant for breakfast, and a cat came right up and ‘talked’ to me. I didn’t think much of it, until a little later I was having a cup of coffee in a restaurant and the plants in the restaurant let me know they were hungry and needed plant food! It is the first time I can ever recall being in total ARC with plant life. Needless to say I informed the waitress they needed to be fed! Going OT is great! We don’t have understanding, we are understanding!”

JoJo Albert – “I find that postulates really work. I can decide to get a new job and get calls right away. But far more enjoyable is thinking of someone — any friend — wondering how they are, and receiving a letter from them in three or four days. Or I call them, and they say, ‘I was just thinking of you!’ I also love the times when I exteriorize with full perceptions. It’s too incredible for words. I could go on forever!”

Mollie Espinosa – “Yesterday, while I was doing something, I noticed a cycle that was about to occur. A small boy was crossing the street and I ‘sensed’ a car coming towards him a bit too fast. I was able to slow the car down so the boy could finish crossing the street and I returned to what I was doing without the driver even noticing what had occurred. The driver went into confusion and came into present time. The wasn’t aware of what had happened at all. But he was safe.”

Scott Sutton – “Since completing New OT V, my income as an artist has more than doubled and I’ve signed with a big publisher to write and illustrate a series of children’s books. The biggest win is that when I postulate something and write it down, it just happens. Illness is a thing of the past. Also, the wins I get from using the tech, ethics and admin data in life are much bigger than before I did New OT V. It’s like New OT V allowed me to get more gains from the tech.”

Jeff Scott – “In early August I had finished writing all thirteen episodes of a new animated Saturday morning television series called ‘The Muppet Babies.’ My usual course of action was to write about six to ten letters and make half a dozen phone calls to various producers and network execs. I never ask for work; I merely let people know I’m done with a current cycle and the work orders begin to flow in. [This time] I merely wrote a little note down stating the time of my postulate so I could see how long the communication lag would be. Ready for this? Twenty four hours later I got a telephone call from the president of the largest television animation studio in the world asking me if I would be interested in creating and producing a television series with them and offering me a guarantee in the six-figure range plus 25 to 30 per cent of the profits of any show I create. Not bad, huh?”

Ronald Kule – “Countless times I’ve helped with avoiding car crashes and ARC breaks with just a quiet intention of their intentions and postulates about to collide. As a thetan I perceive the crash about to happen and simply place either a postulate of no-crash there, or some extra dimension points for extra space between the vehicles and no crash ensues. The same perception-postulate doingness helps me with couples I see arguing, and they go uptone and their communication cleans up.”

The booklet also contained several photos of successful Scientology OTs, and this was the one that really knocked us out…

Overheard in the FreeZone

“Hubbard was not just another protoplasm packet on the loose running around Earth. Spanning Hubbard from good to bad could probably kill someone if they managed to do it. Since the term Clear is pretty well not defined at this time, I have no idea what anyone is talking about, except that maybe they missed an implant or two or three or twelve which some of us probably did. He was without question one of the greatest minds to walk the earth, and was on a good roll for most of his stay here. What is clear is that Hubbard was an expert in Scientology long before he ever hit mud on Earth. Or else he was channeling experts who already knew what they were talking about when he did his work. It’s kind of like music, if your mind is open, the music starts pouring in. If your mind is open, the tech starts pouring in. It did take some extra human confront though.”

2000: Tony Williams reported a protest in Atlanta this week. “We had two new signs – I had one that said ‘Scientology Lies – www.scientology-lies.com’ on one side, and ‘Who is Xenu? find out at www.xenu.net’, while ethercat carried ‘What is Scientology? Its a Bait and Switch Scam’, backed with ‘Scientology – They sell you a Bridge, and their logo is a Double-Cross!’. We brought some Flyer-Paks(R) with us; we were able to hand out 3 of them! We picketed from a little before 11:00 until a little past noon, as we had planned. A bit before noon Linda the OTVII showed up to water the poor dying marigolds and petunias planted in the obviously un-prepared ground next to the sidewalk. At a previous picket ethercat had promised to bring some information to Linda concerning Hubbo’s hatred of Gays, and the last time we saw her she had berated us for not bringing it. Well, we had it today, but Linda refused to accept it.”
