The Scientology-‘Ancient Aliens’ tie-in we just know you were waiting for

We want to thank the reader who went deep into their personal Scientology documents collection to find the weird entry we have for you on this Saturday, which just happens to be the day of the week when we consider “Scientology Lit.”

This is lit, all right.

It’s not the first time this document has been posted online, but it isn’t something you see every day. It’s a condemnation by the church of an ex-member who wrote a popular book that draws on Scientology ideas.

The book, The Gods of Eden, came out in 1989 and was one of those nutty pseudohistory takes on ancient aliens and the like that should have received no attention at all, but of course it became a huge influence on all of the knuckleheaded stuff you see on television even today.

The author was William Bramley, but, as the church indicated, that was just a pseudonym for a San Francisco attorney, Tore Dahlin, that Scientology knew well.

Here’s the church’s 1995 denunciation of the guy and his book…

There have been reports that a book entitled THE GODS OF EDEN, which contains off-beat materials, was being read and promoted by a few Scientologists(TM) who were not fully informed about the materials of the author.

This book includes data and concepts taken from Scientology(R) materials without authorization such as conditions, the third party law and religion with graduated steps.

The author, William Bramley, whose real name is Tore Dahlin, is an ex-Scientologist and former staff member. Dahlin was also a member of a declared suppressive squirrel group for over 2 years and admitted to being in Scientology for the purpose of obtaining information from the Church to give it to the squirrel group.

He has a track of destructive behavior, causing enturbulation by spreading false and electrifying information on Church lines for which he was previously labelled PTS Type III.

Dahlin requested to be removed from staff because, in his own words, he was “insane and a danger to the group” and had evil intentions towards fellow Scientologists and staff members.

He then left Scientology in the early 1980s as real Scientologists wouldn’t let him carry on spreading his electrifying activities and information to other Scientologists.

In March 1994, over a decade after leaving the Church, he wrote and distributed a disavowal of the Church of Scientology in which he attempted to spread further entheta and false information. In HCO PL 23 December 1965RB, Rev. 8 January 1991, SUPPRESSIVE ACTS, SUPPRESSION OF SCIENTOLOGY AND SCIENTOLOGISTS, LRH states: “Such suppressive acts include:… Public disavowal of Scientology or Scientologists in good standing with Scientology organizaitons.”

In HCO PL 7 February 1965, KEEPING SCIENTOLOGY WORKING, LRH states: “I recall one student who was squirreling on an Academy course and running a lot of offbeat whole track on other students after course hours. The Academy students were in a state of electrification on all these new expereiences and weren’t quickly brought under control, and the student himself never was given the works on Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten so they stuck. Subsequently, this student prevented another squirrel from being straightened out and his wife died of cancer resulting from physical abuse. A hard, tough instructor at that moment could have salvaged two squirrels and saved the life of a girl. But no, students had the right to do whatever they pleased.”

Isn’t that fun? Scientology condemning a guy for writing a lot of ancient aliens pablum because it’s a squirrel ripoff of L. Ron Hubbard. Ouch.

Hubbard, after all, told his followers that the people of earth were sleepwalking inmates on a prison planet run by alien forces that have been here for tens of thousands of years.

Bramley apparently took the Von Däniken nonsense and grafted Hubbard on top of it, claiming that human history had been influenced by a hidden cabal he called the “Brotherhood of the Snake” which were ancient aliens in our midst.

For a more detailed breakdown of how The Gods of Eden makes use of Hubbard’s crackpot cosmology, there’s a good rundown here.

Bramley/Dahlin went on to write a book proposing alternate theories about who this Jesus character really was, and then, under the name Tore “Zoom” Dahlin, in 2008 he directed a movie set in SF’s drag queen community, Corky’s Hot Ice. In 2013, he also put out a documentary, Scandal of the State Bar, after he was disbarred in 2012.

Anyway, as for the quality of research in The Gods of Eden, we were glad to see that Jason Colavito, our favorite pseudohistory debunker, took a brief look at Bramley’s book in 2011. Here’s a part of it, regarding this relief carving, that Bramley says represents a UFO…

Bramley wants us to believe that every single aspect of this relief is symbolic and stylized except for the “legs for landing” based on no other evidence than his own feeling that this aspect—and only this aspect—of the carving is a genuine observation of a UFO. The more logical explanation is that the legs agree with the wings and the tail, and all of these are parts of birds. The fahavahar derives from earlier Mesopotamian images of Assur and Shamash that featured a spread-eagle bird and a human figure riding within it.

Even if this were a depiction of a UFO, it isn’t a Zoroastrian one, but a copy of a copy of a copy dating back thousands of years earlier, to Sumer. As with all ancient astronaut theorists, Bramley is blind to cultural influence except where it suits his purposes in arguing for alien influence. The truth, however, is both more earthly and more interesting.

Ah well. This stuff might be crackpot nonsense, and based partly on Hubbard, but it sells. Apparently that’s all that matters.
