The San Francisco Giants put Tom Cruise on the Jumbotron last night during Game 2 of the division series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This set off a storm on Twitter, with lots of jokes about how puffy Tom looked (again) and wondering if he was preparing to play recently deceased SNL comedian Norm MacDonald in a biopic. Hardy har har.
Whatever makes his face blow up between movies is certainly not Scientology, but whatever he’s doing, it doesn’t keep him from going out in public. In this case he was out with his son Connor at his side, and as Intergalactic Walrus pointed out last night, that’s his nephew Aden Darmody (his sister Cass’s son) on his left.
According to SFGate, “When the ‘Mission Impossible’ star was put up on the videoboard, boos could be heard.” Was this the result of Giants fans perceiving that Hollywood Tom was there to root for the Dodgers? Or could it be that Tom’s years of shilling for a destructive totalitarian organization is finally starting to catch up with him?
We were glad to see that some folks at Twitter are paying attention.

2000: The Salt Lake City Tribune reported that U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch made comments in favor of Scientology’s efforts to discredit European countries for their efforts against cults. “Hatch told delegates from 36 countries, including China, Mongolia and Iran, that the job of ensuring religious freedoms is far from done — even in industrialized countries such as France. ‘Developments in France have been particularly troubling because one would expect France to be one of the leaders on a human-rights issue,’ Hatch said. But in ‘June of 1995, the French National Assembly established a parliamentary inquiry commission charged with ‘studying the sect phenomenon’ in the country. The French Senate will soon consider legislation that would ‘create a dangerously broad weapon for fighting unpopular religious groups,’ he said. Germany has also limited religious freedom, Hatch said. In Germany, the controversial Church of Scientology, founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard and embraced by a number of Hollywood celebrities, has endured discrimination by the government.”

— Chrissie Bixler et al. v. Scientology and Danny Masterson: California Supreme Court granted review on May 26 and asked the Second Appellate Division to direct Judge Steven Kleifield to show cause why he granted Scientology’s motion for arbitration. Oral arguments scheduled for November 2.
