The Australian SBS network had a very good story at its website this week, looking at the way Scientology’s hapless front groups have tried to spread the word about L. Ron Hubbard in Indonesia (Criminon), Guam (Applied Scholastics), and East Timor (Youth for Human Rights).
For years, we’ve been looking at the way these Scientology fronts and others have tried to spread word about Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard in countries large and small around the world.
As Mike Rinder points out in the SBS article, it’s all part of Hubbard’s own plan to spread the influence of the church, and recruitment to Scientology itself is an ultimate aim.
But as we’ve seen, these efforts haven’t really paid off in new members for the church, and especially in the places the SBS article looked at.
How do we know? Well, you may remember that we recently obtained a new source of information about where Scientologists are actually located around the world, and it came from Scientology itself. In July, we revealed that we’d patiently gone through more than a thousand videos that Scientologists had submitted to the church as part of a program to keep them engaged during the pandemic. Since April 30, 2020, Scientology has been posting about four new videos each day at its website. As of this morning, that total was 2,467 individual videos, and we’ve recorded the locations of every one of them.
We know there are plenty of caveats to keep in mind here, but the larger the sample size grows, the more accurate a picture we may be getting about where Scientologists remain as the church dwindles. At least we’re getting to see where there are members who are motivated enough to make videos of themselves and send them in.
And as for those three Asian locations that SBS looked at, Indonesia, East Timor, and Guam? Out of more than 2,400 videos that the church has now posted, not a single one came from any of those places. That doesn’t mean there are no Scientologists there, but it does suggest that years of effort by front groups in those places has not paid off the way the church might have hoped.
What the data also suggests is that if you are looking to see where Scientology is having success in Asia, the place to go is Taiwan.
As we pointed out in July, the number of videos from Taiwanese Scientologists was pretty surprising. In fact, at this point, if this video program is any guide, Scientology outside of the US is now largely a Taiwanese and Mexican concern.
Here again are the top ten countries that the videos came from, updated to the latest total.

And another reason why an Australian news organization should, if it’s going to look at Scientology in Asia, not ignore Taiwan: Not only are the numbers there surprising, but we’ve been hearing for years that Scientology has only been able to keep the lights on at some of its Australian facilities because it’s importing Taiwanese “Sea Org” members, who work around the clock for pennies an hour, and give up their passports to the church when they arrive.
Now that’s something SBS might want to look into.
Once again, here’s the full list of videos and their locations, now compiled for the 2,467 videos that had been uploaded as of this morning. And we’ll say it again: These numbers do not equal the number of Scientologists in those areas, just the number of Scientologists who submitted videos of themselves for the “At Home” program and that the church has selected to post on its website. We think the total number of active Scientologists is around 20,000, so with more than 2,400 videos posted, this may give us a good indication of where about ten percent of the overall membership is located, which is a substantial percentage.

She told TIC she’s been spending a lot of time in San Francisco helping to build and paint the children’s art center in the basement. Elfman had befriended firefighters who stopped by yesterday morning. She was wearing a red aluminum bracelet sold by L.A. firefighters to raise money for New York disaster relief efforts. When fellow Scientologist Kirstie Alley called, the four firefighters shouted their hello. Elfman described a day of fire training she’d once done for a magazine story and praised her visitors’ courage and superhuman strength, and they joked about coming to the mission for dance lessons.”
