Scientology finds a friendly physician to help out in its attack on an effective drug

Scientology front group CCHR recently published an article opposing a new drug to treat tardive dyskinesia (TD). They’re a little late to the party, as Ingrezza was approved by the FDA in 2017 to treat adults for the side effects of some antipsychotic medications. Patients on these medicines may develop TD, involuntary jerking motions of the face.

Using one medicine to control the side-effects of another is a risk and one of the factors doctors consider when prescribing. If unchecked there could be wave after wave of medicines ordered to fix side effects rather than the original condition. Helping patients understand the risks and treatments, there’s someplace they can go online…

But Scientology ignores the issues about side-effect management and goes on the attack…

Since there is no known cure for TD, this public relations campaign is designed to make people feel that it isn’t so bad after all when the body jerks around for no reason. The best they can suggest is to talk to your doctor about it, reduce stress, and oh! by the way! you can also take this new psychiatric drug Ingrezza (generic valbenazine).

The target of CCHR’s attack is not a public relations campaign. It’s a patient information website about TD which provides information about relaxation techniques, meditation, support from others, and medical options. The point of the website is not that it’s OK to have involuntary facial movements. It’s that there are options for people who develop TD to lead more productive lives. Managed TD and managed mental health disorders is a better situation for them than untreated mental illness.

On Feb. 11, 2014, a Chicago jury awarded $1.5 million to an autistic child who developed a severe case of irreversible tardive dyskinesia while being treated by psychiatrists with Risperdal and then Zyprexa between 2002 and 2007.

This has nothing to do with Ingrezza, which is not approved for children. In this case the doctor prescribed Zyprexa in an off-label use, which is permitted under the law, and increased the dose to adult strength before the patient was an adult. The jury found that one visit per year did not meet the standard of care necessary, and that monitoring could have detected the onset of TD before it was too late to do anything about it. By leaving out the context, CCHR attempts to make it sound like the verdict is an indictment of Zyprexa, which it’s not. It’s included in an article about Ingrezza because of the medical expert in the case, Dr. Peter Breggin, a long-time ally in Scientology’s fight against psychiatry.

[Dr. Peter Breggin]

Next to late Thomas Szasz who co-founded CCHR with Scientology, Peter Breggin is certainly their closest ally. Better known for criticizing the use of Ritalin and Prozac, Breggin serves as an expert witness in cases such as the Columbine school shooting in which he claimed shooter Eric Harris would not have committed murder and suicide but for his prescription for the antidepressant Luvox. The judge did not accept that opinion and the case was settled in exchange for a modest donation to the American Cancer Society.

Recognize that the real problem is that psychiatrists fraudulently diagnose life’s problems as an “illness,” and stigmatize unwanted behavior as “diseases,” so that they can make a buck selling drugs whose side effects make you a patient for life. Psychiatry’s stigmatizing labels, programs and treatments are harmful junk science; their diagnoses of “mental disorders” are a hoax — unscientific, fraudulent and harmful.

Regardless of whether the various cases cited support this, the only conclusion CCHR and Scientology ever come to is that psychiatry is worthless junk science. Unstated is their belief that real healing only comes from the Modern Science of Mental Health — Dianetics. Only Scientology can heal the mind, and the “psychs” are the primary cause of suppression on the planet.
