Willie and I drove into the city yesterday to meet up with some good friends at the Toronto Scientology Org at 696 Yonge St. Aside from meeting with some awesome people I wanted to have a look to see if Scientology had finally, after years of raising millions of dollars, even gotten started with renovations.
We got there a bit early and took a few pictures. There was no change to the building and no evidence at all of any improvements being done. I don’t know how all those Toronto area Scientologists feel about having all their money sent into a black hole with no result of any kind. You’d think some of them would start to get a bit irritated about it.
When we went around the building along the side street on the north side there were 3 vehicles parked there. Each one had a single person in it or beside it, and all watching us. And, low and behold, one of them was my old friend (from the 80s), Scientologist Blaire. I walked over to talk to him but he jumped back in his vehicle and shut the door. He waved me away and went on his phone. “Hello OSA?”
I found out a bit later that when Pan was checking out the building along the side, before meeting up with us, Blaire had gone up to him and said, “what’s your interest in this building?”.
I don’t know if Scientology knew we were coming or if it was just a coincidence that they were there but I’m really glad they were. I like to interact with them, or at least try to interact.
After Willie and I went back around to the front of the building and went across the street Blaire came around and pretended to be painting by the south side of the front.
I saw him just running a brush up and down but nothing was happening. He was just doing it to watch us and trying to be nonchalant. It was embarrassingly obvious and after a minute or so he seemed to realize the same, at which time he gave up the pretend painting and went back to his truck.
We took some group shots of all of us in front of the Org, then went for lunch around the corner at a nice little outdoor cafe.
It was a fun day and so good to get together with some Bunker friends.

2000: Jeff Jacobsen spoke before Clearwater’s City Council this week. “I didn’t know how far Scientology’s influence has spread in this community just from visiting once a year. But I’ve seen the influence now. Scientology gets away scot-free after the death of Lisa McPherson, while critics of Scientology are enjoined from even walking on certain sidewalks in Clearwater. A Scientologist hits a critic’s video camera with a hammer and the police do nothing. A picketer is assaulted not once but twice by a Scientologist, and despite the assaults being on video tape from different angles, the Scientologist is not arrested. Just a few weeks ago a German official from Hamburg came to town. I was at the airport when about 30 Scientologists greeted her with shouts of ‘Nazi Go Home!’ and attempted to manhandle her. I was there when the Scientology attorney came demanding that she be deposed in a case she has nothing to do with at the exact time she had already scheduled a news conference. Ms. Ursula Caberta has gone home after having been viciously treated by Scientology, and let me assure you that the European media, starting with Der Spiegel, have already begun to paint Clearwater as German-hating and nuts. I suspect you are going to be seeing fewer German tourists around here now, thanks to the actions of Scientologists. Maybe when Europe’s tourists boycott our wonderful community, the hit in your pocketbooks might wake you up to reality.”

— Valerie Haney v. Scientology: Forced to ‘religious arbitration.’ Petition to US Supreme Court submitted on May 26. Scientology responded on June 25.
— Chrissie Bixler et al. v. Scientology and Danny Masterson: California Supreme Court granted review on May 26 and asked the Second Appellate Division to direct Judge Steven Kleifield to show cause why he granted Scientology’s motion for arbitration. Oral arguments scheduled for Oct 5.
— Matt and Kathy Feschbach tax debt: Eleventh Circuit ruled on Sept 9 that Feshbachs can’t discharge IRS debt in bankruptcy. Dec 17: Feshbachs sign court judgment obliging them to pay entire $3.674 million tax debt, plus interest from Nov 19.
