Hurricane Michael made landfall at Mexico Beach and Panama City, Florida on October 10 as the third most powerful hurricane in U.S. history. The area was devastated by high winds and storm surge. Mirit Hendrickson and the Scientology Volunteer Ministers, fresh from their relief efforts following Hurricane Florence in North Carolina made preparations to travel to the Florida panhandle. The photo above shows Hendrickson and other VMs in Sumter County. It’s an odd piece of public relations as this county is in rural central Florida, far from the disaster area.
Scientology’s relief efforts remain the same. They collect small donations to buy toiletries at the dollar store which they assemble into hygiene packs which they distribute in the disaster area. Hendrickson briefed Scientology publics before the hurricane struck to encourage donations and to recruit volunteers to travel to the disaster area.
The VMs were joined in this relief effort by Lynn Posyton representing the Concerned Businessmen’s Association (CBA). Posyton also runs the Foundation for a Drug-Free World center two doors away from the VM center on Fort Harrison Ave. The CBA is a Scientology front group largely funded by Patrick Clouden, a Scientology “whale” and CEO of Consumer Energy Solutions Inc.
Two members of Los Topos, “the moles” from Mexico City joined the relief effort. They are earthquake rescue experts and have medical training that would be valuable in a disaster area. We haven’t seen any evidence that they rescued anybody in Florida.
Los Topos can be seen here helping the other VMs clear downed trees and branches. Clearing debris is one way VMs can assist following a disaster, but poor planning sometimes results in a lack of fuel for their chainsaws.
The VMs have a dual purpose. They serve a public relations purpose to demonstrate how Scientology is not actually a harmful group but instead help people in need. The second purpose is to promote the technology of founder L. Ron Hubbard. He created a wide variety of “assists” that are intended to help the sick, the intoxicated, or even the deceased. One assist is a “locational.” The Scientology Handbook describes the procedure: “One of the easiest assists to render is Locational Processing. A Locational is done by directing a person’s attention off the painful area of his body or his difficulties and out onto the environment.” There is no evidence that directing a person’s attention to various objects has any benefit or healing power.
