Went Ideal: May 11, 2013
Miscavige quote: “Your destiny has always foretold of the day when this Church would become a testament to what originally drew so many thousands to these streets. Namely, that our inherent right to spiritual salvation is intrinsically linked to tolerance, brotherhood and the right of every faith to champion the divinity of humankind. That this Church further stands for drug-free, crime-free, literate, moral and happy lives, is only the beginning; for with a hard-won right of religious freedom comes your responsibility to deliver that long sought goal of total freedom. And so I ask that you now extend your help to all who would dream of such a freedom, so they, too, may realize their destiny.”

[Since 2003, Scientology leader David Miscavige has been on an ambitious quest to upgrade every one of Scientology’s “orgs” — its name for churches. One after another, orgs are being replaced by “Ideal Orgs” in what Miscavige claims represents an expansion of the church’s reach. Local members are under intense pressure to raise funds for the multimillion-dollar projects, but there’s no evidence that fancier facilities are bringing in new members. We’re maintaining pages for each Ideal Org, and we’re hoping you’ll help us keep up to date about these places by sending us information about them.]

Scientology’s shills…

[Rob Drake, Cornelius City Manager]

[Les Smith, disgraced former executive director of the Portland marathon]

[Annie Heart, chair of the Inter-Religious Action Network]

We vividly remember the grand opening for the Portland Ideal Org because Mark Bunker was there trying to cover it live for us. He initially found a great vantage point, but Scientology’s operatives frightened a business owner into kicking Bunker out. We were getting regular reports from him as he kept trying to find another perch. He finally did find one from a much greater distance away, but he still got great stuff for us that day. You can still get a sense of it from our story that day.

But Oregon also has another reason for looming large in Scientology’s history — the Battle of Portland in 1985. Chris Owen has written a detailed two-part series for us describing the court case that Scientology turned into a major public battle.

And Sunny Pereira wrote about her experience when she was sent to Portland to help out after a 1996 mass shooting occurred at the Scientology org.
