Images from spy camera show Clearwater bar owner not only target

[Clay Irwin’s house, as captured by the camera]

Clearwater bar owner Clay Irwin has obtained some images from the camera he found aimed at his house recently, and they contained a surprise.

Irwin opened a bar in January, the Lucky Anchor on Cleveland Street in Clearwater, Florida. His bar was smack in the middle of the Church of Scientology’s “Flag Land Base” which takes up much of the city’s downtown.

Clay had told us he wanted to be a good neighbor to the church, but then he received an impromptu tour of the new condo penthouse being prepared for Tom Cruise, just down the street, and since then his relationship with the organization has been more contentious.

But he was stunned to find the camera, which his dog Bruno sniffed out on his neighbor’s property. It was a time-lapse Brinno camera in an all-weather case, and his Scientologist neighbor denied knowing about it.

Because of his recent run-ins with the church, and because of Scientology’s history of spying on perceived enemies, including a famous case of using a remotely controlled time-lapse camera outside the Rathbun home in Texas, it didn’t take much to convince Clay that the church has had his house under surveillance.

Our request for a statement from the church, however, has not elicited a response.

Clay has managed to extract images from the camera, and he shared them with us.

Not surprisingly, the images included shots of Clay’s house, taken during the day and at night.

Clay tells us that the camera also captured an image of the man who placed it, but it’s hard to see his face because of what appears to be the beam from a flashlight….

And what really surprised Clay, he tells us, is to find that the camera had apparently been used in another surveillance operation earlier this year. Can anyone tell us if they recognize who the target of this stalking was?

“I’m going to have the serial number of the camera traced,” Clay tells us.

“Every time I leave the house I’m looking for cameras. I’m creeped the eff out.”

Tell us about your independence on the Fourth of July

We’re celebrating another Independence Day here in the US, and as in past July 4 observations, we’d like to hear your personal tale of dissolving the bands that held you in thrall to the Church of Scientology.

Whether it was long ago or just last year, what was it that made you question a way of thinking that requires such total dedication from its adherents?

We can never get enough of these stories, and we hope you’ll share yours in the comments section today.

And if you’re celebrating the holiday today, please enjoy yourself and stay safe!

Marty is now the poster boy for the Church of Scientology.

Wallpapering his blog with philosophy is just an attempt to misdirect attention away from his willing subjugation to David Miscavige. What he is posting fools no one. Marty is a pseudo-intellect who reads philosophy only to justify his own treachery. What he is posting is an attempt to make the many people he fucked over wrong while making himself right. Jenny Linson had it right when she called Marty “pathetic.”

Marty exposed himself as a cold-blooded traitor and a liar and that is now his legacy forever. The Church of Scientology doesn’t want Marty except to use as a treacherous lying meat puppet and no one out here will ever trust him again. He has burned all of his bridges and is now destined to live in ignominy as a character who disgraced himself as a modern Benedict Arnold.

    Hence, philosophy.

Marty’s modus operandi when faced with crisis has always been to resort to philosophy. However, philosophy cannot eradicate the stench of his own conduct nor remove the wide public opprobrium he has earned by his own disgraceful actions. Nothing Marty posts can hide his true nature now that he has exposed himself on camera as David Miscavige’s bitch. The deed is done.

Enjoy your new status as Dave’s bitch Marty. You earned it. Own it Marty.

No amount of philosophy can change the fact that you are Dave’s bitch forever. You lost the game and are now a broken piece.

    • I look forward to reading the rest of this comment once I’ve word-cleared “Marty”

      • The Bunker is in top form regarding it’s rapier like wit and sense of humor. Great posts all day and the humor/sarcasm about Marty is particularly hilarious. Marty is the modern day defintion of Benedict Arnold. When Miscavige rapdily flees the USA, the stretch marks from Marty’s neck which is currently caught up Miscavige’s butt are going to leave permanent stretch scars ,let alone the psychological ones left by being abandoned by his fleecer-in-chief. Marty will soon rue the day he decided to rue the day.

        • J. Swift

Marty might as well have strapped a camera on his head and become a Squirrel Buster because what he’s doing is the same type of Scientology freak show. In any event, Rathbun has shot his wad. He’s now like a burnt out firework.

Dave Miscavige got to have his cake and eat it too when it comes to Marty. Marty is now widely despised for being a Benedict Arnold, and, Scientology’s hate websites on Marty will stay up forever because the Cult doesn’t want the guy. Marty is Xenu as far as Scientology is concerned.

Here is the LRH quote the Cult chose to describe Marty Rathbun. It is very fitting:

“‘At 1.1 truth receives her severest drubbing. For here, truth is confused, upset, used and twisted, hidden for fear somebody may make retaliation, until one understands that data from this level of the Tone Scale has only two purposes: to wreak the most harm upon others and secure the greatest safety for self. Here we have lies used to hide lies amid the most frantic protestations of honesty and a noisy advertising campaign about the ethics of the speaker. Beneath the facade of honor,
honesty, ethics and “one’s sacred word,” one is apt to find a writhing cesspool of vicious and malicious lies calculated to do the greatest possible harm.’

          • Chee Chalker

That quote also described LRH and COB.
Marty is in pretty high company these days – 2 of the Earth’s Big Beings

          • Puget Buckeye

I’m sure that DM will look back on this time fondly-having his cake and eating it too. With the shit storm that I’m sure is coming his way, his happy days are numbered. Leah’s series is gaining more notice, Scientology is more often the punch line to jokes and the ASC is growing by the day. Tick tock.

      • TexasBroad

        Common usage: WTF, Marty?!

    • Observer

Next up for Marty: cornering apostates in the airport and telling them they’re nothing, that nobody cares about them, and that they should just end cycle.

    • PeaceMaker

JS, I find it interesting to see from the comments on his blog, that there are apparently a very tiny number of people who are fooled by him (a few are known actual characters, along with some who may just be puppets of the sock or other varieties). They seem to me to mostly be people in need of some leader or figurehead to line up behind, or at least desperately looking for an online forum when the indie websites have mostly gone idle or even died.

His quotes on topics like cybercults would be somewhat interesting, if he’d made a real effort to explore and even implement ideas on his own blog. Instead, like a lot of tech loyalists and indies I know, he is full of criticisms of others and seemingly grand visions, but lacks the ability to actually implement improvements or produce anything valuable in the real world.

      • Chee Chalker

I’ve noticed several ‘new’ posters over at Marty’s.
A couple of them repeat the same thing verbatim.

        Gee….where could they be from?

        • PeaceMaker

It seems to me there is a mix of possible sock puppets, perhaps some new acquaintances and collaborators of his we may not be familiar with, and maybe even a couple of new followers who his gambit has drawn in.

    • Mockingbird

I don’t use that particular term. Marty Rathbun cherry picks bits of ideas from people he frankly doesn’t understand in my opinion. I don’t read philosophy but he occasionally reads psychology and quotes cult experts. I read the Sociopath Next Door and think he either didn’t understand the book or intentionally misrepresented the ideas it contains.

And with Robert Jay Lifton Marty really came across as clueless. He described bits from Lifton with no context that is needed. Lifton described thought reform in depth and Scientology epitomizes it.

Similarly at his blog Marty cherry picks and misrepresents other ideas to try to pretend to be smart.

He never uses actual critical analysis or the proper context.

I think a few posts actually addressing how critical analysis and thinking work and how Scientology fails to stand up against it are in order. If Miscavige has his servant try to muddy the waters then using the opportunity to clear them is appropriate.

In coming out of Scientology basic ideas on actually examining both sides of a debate are useful. Marty Rathbun and his ideas in my opinion can’t face debate and stand up to even moderately competent appropriate opposition.

    • FredEX2

I wish I could upvote a thousand times what you have said. Marty Rathbun has done more damage to Scientology than any other single person telling their story could ever do. He was in charge of the criminal actions towards many innocent people he deemed potential ‘enemies’…that he and his merry band of criminals sought to destroy. He was the one who had to bring these supposed ‘enemies’ of Scientology to David Miscaviges attention and seek permission to Fair Game and destroy these many lives….including my own…eventually not just turning so many who were never ‘enemies’…into being that very thing when they survived and found that somehow they were on the ‘wrong side’ of an Organization that was trying to destroy their lives….and for WHAT?…at the pleasure of Marty Rathbun…a Sociopath and remorseless criminal to his core.

Marty Rathbun interpreted Scientology and defined it his own way…both while in…and while he was ‘out’. He carried out the worst of ‘Scientology’s policies’ with great relish. He absolutely knows where the bodies are buried bc he buried some of them himself. If ever someone had dirt…and blood on his hands…it would be Mark ‘Marty’ Rathbun…who was also in charge of the ‘mission’ to destroy my life and harm my son..and in doing so…as well as combined with all his other nefarious actions and atrocities…has changed the course of not just many lives…but his own bad judgement and actions in the end have been bringing Scientology down in a trickle that’s now become an unstoppable force. The dam has broken…and IMHO…Marty swung one of the biggest blows. He defines a 1.1 and his lack of mercy or remorse towards others for all the damage he has done has now…at last..finally caught up to him.

No one does betrayal quite as spectacularly or as thoroughly as Mark ‘Marty’ Rathbun. He was the enforcer of destruction for half of his life and has become the biggest enemy of all time to himself…his little family ( if he still has one )…and to David Miscavige & Scientology. Tho it was destined to implode eventually…Marty has hastened its finality.

Marty Rathbun truly IS the Benedict Arnold of this lifetime…and if there really is such a thing as reincarnation…it’s possible Marty was the original traitor Benedict Arnold of past history…and Judas as well. He sold out Scientology and he sold out those he pretended to ‘help’ and now not only makes himself look like a fool…but the entire organization of Scientology too . I hope it was worth the 30 pieces of silver to sell his soul. To those few hangers on who feel sorry for Marty…they look mighty stupid doing so, but if they want to jump on his sinking ship with their misplaced ‘sympathy’ for a remorseless man who destroyed SO many lives and relished it…so be it…they’d do better to back away and allow this treacherous traitor of an anti-social destructive man his well deserved Karma…it would be merciful to let Marty’s Karma take its course at this point. And I say that with compassion. By seeking to destroy others…HE has effectively delivered the biggest blow to destroying himself…and helped to cause the downfall of Scientology. For that we can thank him.

  • In honor of the 4th of July, a short but poignant 2013 article (not even a full page) below about the USA founders and what they likely in reality risked when they voted to leave Great Britain. Puts our modern day sacrifices in perspective. I will say this, the risks of escaping an evil cult such as scientology involve fighting a battle on your home turf and their knowing where you are likely at. I’ve worked with many over the years who escaped the Witnesses and other cults but nothing compares to the super human courage it must take to leave the sleaze of scientology-think. Orwell would be creeped out knowing what Hubbard had created as the embodiment of 1984. Kudos to all you ex’ers. You made me feel a lot of gratitude and proper perspective seeing how you hold your heads high and act with class and integrity. I am proud to support you and you teach me about independence in your own sharing.

If it ain’t hypocrisy, it ain’t Scientology!

    • If you have any doubt that the founders did not intend to use a bible in public education, all you have to do is read Benjamin Rush’s argument published in 1798 for using the Bible in public education in early USA schools. If the founders had thought the Bible should be part of the public curriculum in our schools, Rush would not have had to argue for such after the Constitution was 9 years old. He is one of the very few founders (and a key founder, yes) on record for using the Bible in public education.

    • Noesis

This is just more evidence that there is no lie that senior Scientology leadership will not tell, their is no brutality that same leadership will not insist that others must endure so that the leadership is “safe” and there is no bottom to the pit of deceit from which that same leadership will not dip a ladle in order to spoon out self-righteous bile, while pretending to have honorable intentions.

If Scientology were as honest as the Mafia, at least the church’s leadership would not pretend that they were not a violent, predatory gang of thieves, dedicated to their own self-interest at the expense of everyone else.

Instead, they get Marty to make videos where trivialities, generalities and “I was there anecdotes” are used to smear those who are working to expose the truth about Scientology.

He and Dave are a great match – deceit, self-interest and treachery employed while wearing a disguise as virtuous people. What an embarrassing, putrid charade.

    • PeaceMaker

Maybe it’s some kind of self talk, or protection – scientologists seem particularly good at accusing others, of what themselves are guilty of.

He’s another of those scientologist actors whose career is in decline, and one of quite a few don’t seem to have had much of career to begin with, and probably mostly because of connections with family and friends at tath.

I’f I’ve got it right from a quick check at IMDB, he hasn’t had a leading role in a move or a recurring role on a TV show in about two decades. It also looks like he may not have had any work in two years; supposedly he has two films in post-production, but they don’t appear to be major studio projects and might be the sort of thing that never even ends up getting released.

Maybe Independence Day is an appropriate time to note that, as creepy as surreptitious photos of children are, all of us are being recorded by businesses, private citizens, and municipal agencies during a significant percentage of the time we’re in public. What’s being done with that footage and who has access is anybody’s guess, but I’m not naive enough to believe it’s unilaterally harmless. I’m not going to search for hidden camera footage of children but I’m sure it’s available.

It’s not my intent to examine, excuse, or justify the behavior, just remarking that personal privacy has been eroding for a long time now. The laws in Florida that permit such recordings are one example.

    • Barbara

Maybe it’s an ex wondering about their kids & how they’re being treated? These were PIs that planted the camera, right?

      • Phatpharm

My question would be, why outside? If they were good at hiding abuse they would do it behind closed doors. If it was happening outside the neighbors could be witnesses. The only thing really caught on that camera would be who is visiting the house and when? It could be someone looking for an affair. I hope someone is able that family know their house is being watched. The big question is why wouldn’t a well trained PI down load pictures then wipe the memory of the camera? I guess they are not that well trained.

        • Puget Buckeye

Maybe DM is trying to economize and hired cheap PI’s. You get what you pay for.

          • Phatpharm

            Haha!!!

    • Liberated

I’m confused about the entire spy camera stuff – do you have to have a license?
So, a person can just set up a camera across the street where you live and record your home and everything that happens within camera range – and they can do whatever they want with the recording?
      In the state of Florida?

      That just isn’t right.

      • PattyCakenfeld

People are free (as has been suggested that Clay do) to set up security cameras around their homes. When pointed outward they will naturally capture activity by neighbors and passers-by. The footage is their property to do with what they please. That’s not just Florida.

It is also said that NOI clams are all in on the space opera nonsense!

But what I want to know is if Master Fard’s space opera delusions meet up in any way, shape or form with Elron’s? They don’t appear to, but I’m no expert on the NOI’s space opera Creation Story.

      • Intergalactic Walrus

The CO$ crazy train and the NOI crazy train connect at “THIS CRAP DOESN’T HAVE TO MAKE SENSE AS LONG AS WE CAN MAKE A BUCK OFF OF IT” junction.

        • Harpoona Frittata

There you go! But if there basic space operas myths don’t meet up, then the cult and NOI can’t ever truly merge.

  • Phatpharm

I wonder if that PI knows who even has the camera.

    • Puget Buckeye

I imagine that as soon as Clay’s story hit this site, the PI found out who had the camera.

      • Phatpharm

I sure Davey boy let him know. A PI that doesn’t wipe is camera memory before he leaves it out for his next assignment, may not know to watch this sight. 😀

  • OOkpik

A few thoughts about the spy selfie.

It becomes a bit more clear at a smaller size. it looks like a shot of a man’s face superimposed over his hand (or visa versa). The thumb is in the right as he adjusts the camera.

He appears to be wearing a a device near his right eye and a dark balaclava-like thing pulled to just below his smiling maw and over one eye. He’s having fun playing spy and setting his marks and anyone visiting them up for harassment. Rat!

    • I think you’re the closest, so far. My guess is that it’s all a mirror image of an extended left hand, wearing fingerless gloves & adjusting the camera, and the “eye” is some sort of attachment that goes around the forefinger/palm. Everything else is an optical illusion caused by the backlighting.

      • OOkpik

        Hmmm!

        • I thought it was a face in a balaclava wearing wraparound glasses, at first, too, but have since changed my mind about that.

    • Puget Buckeye

I agree with you about the smaller size being clearer. And as I tried (not so successfully) to explain earlier what I was seeing it seems you and I are “seeing” just about the same thing. It seems to me that his head is tilted and that someone (sunglass man?) is shining a flashlight over camera adjuster’s right shoulder.

      • dungeon master

You can see lips in the dark right hand corner if you open it in another screen. I think the gizmo is one of those bluetooth like devices worn around the neck maybe.

      • chukicita

I thought that was Bruno at the bottom there.

Even when there is no need, or even when its against their own interests.

      • Liberated

But he said he never lied or conned us….as he laughed all the way to his swiss bank.

  • “Every time I leave the house I’m looking for cameras. I’m creeped the eff out.”
Clay, don’t be afraid. This is exactly what their op is designed to do. There is no “intel” to be had. This is solely to “creep you out”.
    Don’t let them succeed.

    • Puget Buckeye

I’m just cheeky enough that I would probably start to wave and smile toward anyplace I thought might hide a camera.

      • Yeah, and/or mooning.
        Since you’re “cheeky”.

        • Puget Buckeye

That occurred to me. But trust me, no one needs to see that!

          • Exactly why it should be done.

Except that’s the action that’s illegal.

  • Eti: *** Disregard *** I changed my perspective after iampissed’s comment below and he’s right. What I thought was a thumb is a neck & head and I can clearly see up the guy’s nostrils, now.

Depending on whether the hand is reaching in from the front or over the top from the back, whad’ya reckon? https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/48e05ad3cac447be3071370e4145a235eec056651c69abc2e0874402cc6495fc.jpg

    • iampissed

I would vote fingers..but that is just me.

      • But you agree it’s more likely to be a hand than a face?

        • iampissed

Well the thumb could be a neck?

          • I’m wrong. Unlikely. I’ve shot lots of footage w/ GoPro-type cameras and the dimensions for any other body part/face seem way off at that distance. Imagine how close that has to be to the camera.

          • Holy shit, you’re right! You can clearly see nostrils and an eye in the top left hand corner. The other thing that I thought was jewelry looks more like an over-shoulder talkback radio or something. Sorry I doubted you.

            • iampissed

              Or you could be right.

            • I think you are 100% correct about it being a neck. For some reason, I wasn’t seeing it from that angle and didn’t even notice the nostrils until I zoomed in.

            • iampissed

              No……please doubt me….really I’m good.

            • We’re gonna make a great team, that’s all I know!

as usual, ex sci response is minimal, and minimizing what is happening. this MUST be taken to the police. a woman and her child are being stalked/ photographed. Clay irwin is being stalked/photographed. if you don’t think he should be creeped the f out, you might be a former victim of brainwashing. its possible a FLIR camera might detect hot spots caused by batteries in spy cams. FLIRs that attach to iPads/iphones are available at the apple store for under $150. I’m going to test mine out tonite and see if it can sense batteries. i know it shows electric plugs/light switches/thermostats. if it works, it could be used to scan for cameras.

    • PeaceMaker

First, yes, I agree, the matter should be taken to the police, to alert them to what might be going on, including the possibility that some other sort of surveillance or stalking is taking place.

I think that cameras operate so efficiently, that they’re not going to generate hot spots. I did a bit of searching, and it appears that the best bet might be an app or device that detects the glint off of the camera lens.

My Dad was in charge of the major problems.. Word Peace and World Hunger..

I never got yelled at or disciplined in my life by either one.. they made me feel safe.. ( Mac says that’s my problem hahhahha)

        • Eclipse-girl

I was certainly disciplined. More than once. At 57, I am over that and my daughter while disciplined suffered far less that me. Not proud of that but not ashamed of it either. Different times

As a teen, I hated my father because he was an autocrat. As an adult, I adored him and forgave him his self righteousness. I wish I knew my well educated mother better. She had a harder time with relationships and I was the the youngest.

(I didn’t notice any of the details until I zoomed in … “nostrils” is pointing to the mouth -they are actually slightly above- and you can almost see an eye … I can’t be bothered to redo it)

      • April

That’s a creepy damned episode. Gives me the willies.

    • dungeon master

I opened the picture in another, and you can see an apparent caucasians lips in the upper right corner. In which case the ‘neck’ would be the arm holding the flashlight. Anybody else see that?

      • Interesting, but I don’t see that at all. I think the “flashlight” might just be a street lamp the guy was standing beneath when the time lapse photo was taken, before the camera was placed into position.

        • stanrogers

That’s how I read it as well: streetlamp (or a similar sort of yard lantern thingy).

          • weird, now that i looked again, i notice the light is in front of his face. if the light source was behind him, wouldn’t his whole face be in the dark? so it probably is a flashlight? haha

            • stanrogers

Light reflects (off of everything, to varying degrees), lenses have flare, and sensors (and film) bloom. Even if you eliminate the camera, you can see the same sorts of things. Hold your finger up in front of a very bright light and see if you can notice that your finger appears to be thinner where the light is brightest. In this case, the light is obviously brightest on the subject along the line of the shoulders, and there’s a deep shadow where the neck is. That puts the light above and behind.

I absolutely hate doing the “I’m an expert so you’ve got to believe me” thing – nobody should ever trust self-proclaimed experts unless they can verify things themselves. I happen to have a lot of years of experience that tell me what to look for, what is and isn’t likely, and – perhaps most importantly – what pictures look like when you’ve really screwed something up badly. I’ve probably learned more from crap that’s gone wrong in the studio (or on location) with lighting and so forth than I could possibly have learned if I’d gotten everything right along the way. The best way to figure it out is to try to recreate something similar to what you think is happening. This one you can do with the cheapest/worst camera imaginable in just a few minutes.

            • stanrogers

Here’s an example that’s probably pretty familiar-looking. Is the sun in front of the moon? That’s not meant to be snarky; I just want to show you that you already know what happened, even if it didn’t immediately spring to mind. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/37cbd68009b7840d90fd3ae4e400a545b67800b20344b878b85dd312456c8228.jpg

            • That’s what I originally thought. Then I second guessed myself because I’m definitely not an expert in this field (says the guy that thought a person was a hand, lulz) and figured I’d better not be so confident in my assumptions. I prefer to learn something new, rather than wrongly think I’m right, so I gladly defer to your expertise and appreciate the explanation!

      • stanrogers

That’s the edge of a sleeve, oversharpened in camera. (The “unsharp mask” method creates an easily-recognized halo effect, making the dark thing darker than it really is and the slightly lighter thing much lighter than it really is where the two shapes meet.)

        • dungeon master

I didn’t understand what you just said lol. Dumb it down a little for me Stan. So the lips are really the edge of a sleeve, or the demarcation between dark and light left of what I saw as lips (nicely shaped and perfectly delineated) in the dark right hand corner)?

          • stanrogers

That’s basically it, yes. One thing we always need to keep in mind – always – is that humans are aggressive pattern-matching machines with a built-in bias for seeing faces (or parts of faces). You saw a curved and kinked line with a gradation of light on one side and a gradation of shadow on the other and a sharp demarcation between the two… and that became a lip. That’s understandable, natural, and the way the human vision system (which is more brain than eyes) is supposed to work.

The problem is that most of what you saw isn’t “really” there, in a sense. There wasn’t nearly as much of an abrupt change in lightness/darkness between the sleeve and the background in that area as the picture makes out. The camera added emphasis at what it determined to be a line or an edge. The gradation in tone around that edge is largely a side-effect of the way it emphasizes edges. Basically, it makes the darker side of the edge a little darker than it “really” is, and the lighter side a little lighter. That lets you see the edge better, which gives the impression that the image is sharper and more detailed than it really is. But those changes have to get back to “normal” not very far from the edge or the whole picture’s going to wind up looking wonky, so you see that shaded gradation going on. Almost all digital cameras do that to one extent or another; this particular camera, because it’s meant to pack as much information as possible into as little data as possible, is a bit heavy-handed. It’s not designed to make pretty pictures, but to emphasize details. (You can do the same thing in Photoshop or a similar program, but anything more than the lightest touch in controlled areas gives you those awful “HDR”-style ruined pictures that were so trendy a few years back.)

You’re not an idiot. You saw what you saw, and your brain is designed to see it. Children whose brains don’t do that in early infancy are usually severely autistic. What’s missing is knowledge of what cameras do, enough experience to spot what’s happened when it happens, and a nagging voice inside your head (which, one hopes, you can identify as your own) warning you about pareidolia all of the time. (I had to pick that up not so much because I was seeing things – I’d known that since I’d seen faces in wallpaper and floor tiles as a kidlet – but because I’d missed something that wasn’t there, but couldn’t be unseen once you’d seen it, and it was highly embarrassing, in a commercial shoot that made it to publication in ’91. Things did not go well for the client’s art director.)

    • Snippy_X

This guy is one of the clams regular PIs. Kinda similar but really too dark. Also, camera guy looks more like Marty than this PI below. 😀

  • Michael Leonard Tilse

I want to write something about my independence. But I feel like a coward. Why?

Because the Independence we celebrate today in the United States was won by people who put their lives on the line for independence. Against people who would deny their right to self-rule and enforce it with violence.

I cannot help but make the comparison to the violence used by Scientology. Oh sure, we call it ‘fair game’ or ‘disconnection’ or ‘gaslighting.’ But it is violence. It does harm to our minds, our bodies, our souls. It is violence Scientology does to us because we choose self-rule.

And I am a coward. Scientology, operating under Hubbard’s rules and Miscavige’s psychopathy operates outside of any law or decency and actually indecently uses the law with overwhelming force to do violence to those who would oppose it. And I make excuses to myself, that I am non-violent, that I have taken the high road, that revenge or retribution are not for me. So I try to reassure myself. I hope for someone to do something effective to stop the violence that is Scientology. But I know in the ultimate analysis, it will be be the violence or the threat of violence from Law Enforcement that will ultimately bring an end to Scientology. Or, being themselves fair gamed or purchased, law enforcement will stand aside, trusting some vague social force or popular view to bring about it’s quiet end.

I cheer for my proxies to do what I cannot bring myself to attempt. Yes, today I am independent. And a coward. I’ve been handled by the very social conscience that Scientology lacks. What a cruel irony.

    • iampissed

Um….your not a coward….you have not been ” handeled”. You are your own person. Today is your day. Hurt none…..because it is right.

    • Eclipse-girl

      MLT,
First you are willing to use your name and not a moniker. You are not a coward.

Violence and Violation is harmful and people can be beaten into accepting that is the best they can expect. It is WRONG.

I do not equate being a pacifist with being a coward. Please get that idea out of your head. I see them as very very separate ideas.

I want to be a pacifist, but I know I am not. Sometimes that scares me.

    • Kitz

You aren’t a coward honey. If you were, we wouldn’t have done all that work. 😉

Enjoy your freedom today! *Gentle hugs for reasons*

    • Glen

You are no coward, Michael. Cowards don’t have your kind of compassion, honesty, insight. Keep fighting to be kinder to yourself.

    • Puget Buckeye

MLT, On the contrary. The irony is that you are anything but a coward. It may indeed be “law enforcement” that brings an end to Scientology, but not in a violent way. It will be because people like you made enough noise that the authorities and the public began to listen. And if I remember correctly, who’ve had a first hand experience in seeing the tide start to shift. You attended a gathering of a group of people, from all walks of life, from all backgrounds, who want nothing more than to see an end to Scientology abuses. You’ve seen Leah’s series gain traction and garner an audience who never before knew of the abuses. It won’t take violence to end the abuses. It will take noise and persistence to gain independence for those still in. And you are part of that noise. “A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence.”

    • Baby

How dare you call my HERO a coward. You got out.. Do you know how very brave that makes you to me.

Everytime I see you you grow stronger and your light grows stronger..and your eyes twinkle more.. I love you Michael Leonard Tilse. Baby

Not sure what to say , except to say you are no coward. You are a kind loving caring person who pays it forward every day. I think I understand what you are trying to say but you are no coward. I always look out for your posts. Anyone that tries to help a friend 26 for no expectation of getting anything back is a hero and someone to be admired and a role model. I hope you had a great holiday

    • Baby

Oh Michael.. I realized I came across bitchy.. Jeeze.. but please don’t ever think of yourself as a coward.. It hurt my heart to think that you think that.

            • Puget Buckeye

Lynnwood. I won’t venture into “town” but will watch the fireworks on TV. Traffic makes me crazy and I probably wouldn’t get home until 1am. Only to turn around and head south again tomorrow.

            • FredEX2

              ~Been a beautiful & blissful day!.

            • Puget Buckeye

I should have had a clue that you were in the area by your train trip pics. Sorry you experienced that. Drag. It’s tempting to Uber down there, but I just can’t do it. And you’re right, it’s been an absolutely beautiful day. The bluest skies you’ve ever seen. (I’m new at this, but let’s talk about meeting up, OK?)

            • FredEX2

Yes! Let’s do! There are others in the Northwest too. Would be fun to plan a meet up sometime. 🙂

            • Puget Buckeye

I think that would be really really cool. I’m in. And BTW, according to Steve Raible, you’ve got less than 20 minutes to go till show time. Idiots here in the ‘hood have started even though they’re illegal.

            • FredEX2

Just got in from the Fireworks. You were right…almost 1am. ~ It was the best fireworks show I have ever seen. So many happy people and families and I was touched when the entire crowd of many thousands of people stood for the National Anthym and cheered afterwards. ~A wonderful day well worth the drive up and the late night. Time to sleep!

            • Liberated

Wow…you two meet up here..it’s a bunker miracle!

            • Puget Buckeye

And according to Jimmy, we’re now Canadian.

        • April

You’ll regret that when I show up with my two rowdy kids and an English Mastiff in tow.

          • FredEX2

Lol! The more the merrier…so long as your mastiff doesn’t eat Zoe our cat 🙂

I thought Trump sold Seattle to Canada?

      • Eclipse-girl

Trump thought the rain was bad for tourism

        • FredEX2

Ha! Well, it’s definitely not raining today! 😆

      • FredEX2

Well, it’s about as patriotic of an American City as it can be…but if he sold it and I’m in Canada…well fine by me too since I also love Canada! 😊

Hey Jimmy look at all these wonderful happy WOGS and their families. No Scientologists and their WTH booklets allowed here. No OSA anywhere. This Planet doesn’t need ‘saving’…Ahhhh! Lovely beautiful life….what a gorgeous day. Not a thought of hateful prejudice bigoted fair gaming fake religious extremists to be found. I love when I’m reminded that real good ‘ole regular human beings outnumber Scilons 99.99% to less than their 00.0001%.

SO grateful for our Independece from a suppressive cult. We are Americans. We don’t need Scientology to ‘grant’ us our freedom. We were born free!!!!

    To The Oracle,

We are focused on the present here, living our lives to the fullest, working, playing, enjoying our friends and family. The Underground Bunker is an unusual presence on the World Wide Web – normally a place of strangers. Many people here have met each other in real life, many have KNOWN each other for decades. And others, like myself, came here because of Tony Ortega. Someone who for years has stood up for people who have no voice, no say, no life.

Happy Fourth of July to the Underground Bunker. May we continue to be exactly who we are. Woot Woot!!!

    Sincerely,

      • EmmaDaoust

Yes, we are. Thank you, Puget! You can have my poutine allotment. I must be the only human who doesn’t like it. I like Mayo with my fries. And that’s an inside joke to them who know me.

        • Eclipse-girl

Mayo is wonderful on fries. Bout I have never have a true poitine with cheese curds, and nrown gravy. It sounds like wonderful bar food.

          • Puget Buckeye

            It. Is. The. Best!

          • EmmaDaoust

It’s gone from gravy and cheese curds to curry, lobster, you name it. Heavy duty.

            • Eclipse-girl

I want to try to oiriginal. I know we have chefs who want to put fois gras on it.

        • Puget Buckeye

Mayo or tarter sauce on fries-I never heard of such a thing until I moved to the Seattle area. I grew up putting malt vinegar on my fries. People here laugh at me.

          • EmmaDaoust

Mayonnaise on fries has its origins in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark..

            • stanrogers

…and seems to be compulsory in Montréal if you chose not to go the poutine route.

            • EmmaDaoust

Nah, not so much. Ketchup is the main accoutrement, and vinegar. I got a taste for mayo as a kid when my big sister raved after a trip to Europe. And besides, our family name is Mayo. 🙂

            • Puget Buckeye

Well, then you just gotta mayo!

            • EmmaDaoust

              Hey! Easy on the Mayo!

          • Baby

Cedar Point Fries Buckeye.. OMG.. I would spend the day there just to put vinegar on my fries.. What a fabulous childhood memory. ( Hot with lots of salt and a trace of ketchup)

            • Puget Buckeye

OMG Baby! I haven’t thought of Cedar Point in years and years!

            • Baby

My daughter started the tradition of going with her kids and hubby 25 years ago.. they go twice a year. Once at Halloween ( Her favorite Holiday) and at the end of summer.

But of course her older daughter and cousins can drive and go up often. What a fabulous day … They try to go when the lines aren’t so long.. but they have never failed to have the best times.

My favorite time was sunset when you could go up in Ferris Wheel or if you had the guts ..Roller Coaster and see sunset over Lake Erie.. They have always kept the Park so clean too… That’s always a bonus.

Oh and I would also love to see the Entertainment in the little saloon…drinking beer..

            • Puget Buckeye

But I have to admit, one of my favorite places was Conneaut? Ever been there?

            • Baby

NO..but googled. looks like an inexpensive fun day to spend with family Buck.

            • Puget Buckeye

I haven’t been there for probably 40+ years.

            • Newiga

I want some Cedar Point Fries with vinegar! *drools*

            • Baby

            • Newiga

The Starfish wants fries too. She’s very demanding. She is a star after all. 😉

            • Newiga

I won’t I promise. She’s blissfully ignorant about the Chinese cuisine.

          • Missionary Kid

It’s their loss. Sometimes, I like ketchup, sometimes vinegar, and, when I was in Europe, they had the best (?) mayonnaise on the fries. It was yellow, and tasty. I’ve put tartar sauce and cocktail sauce on them, too.

        • PeaceMaker

Speaking of mayo, have you tried tartar sauce with fries – that’s my favorite – if they even have it out there on the fringes of civilization?

I’ve been told that I should go to Montreal and try some good poutine. I don’t suppose that’s your area of expertise.

          • EmmaDaoust

Yes, I love that too – fish & chips with tartar sauce. Yum. And now that we’ve had The World’s Largest Rubber Duck in our harbour, I wouldn’t be calling Toronto the “fringes of civilization” thank you very much.

I lived the first 20 years of my life in Montréal. Poutine was just really crappy greasy spoon fare. It’s turned into something else completely now. Toronto has a Poutinierie on every corner now with all kinds of gourmet toppings. If you go to Montréal, you’ll have no trouble finding some poutine. But they also have sensational restaurants that serve divine food.

          • Baby

NOOOOOOOO … Peace.. but I love tartar sauce on fish so I don’t taste the fish at all..not even a little.. but fries? Blasphemy ..

        • littlefish

Fry Sauce! It’s an Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah thing. Mayo + ketchup, sometimes jazzed with other spices.

          • Jenyfurrrrr

Fry sauce – it’s so funny because I thought the hubby’s friends were referring to ketchup. The. When they looked at me like some alien & asked “you don’t know what fry sauce is?!?!” Then after explaining I assumed it was like thousand island dressing – nope – that shit’s GOOD! And there’s nothing else quite like it!

            • Puget Buckeye

East of the Rockies, it’s called Hellman’s Mayonnaise. West of the Rockies, it’s called Best Foods Mayonnaise. Same look, same slogan. I bet if you look closely at a jar of Hellman’s it will say it’s called Best Foods in the west.

          • Eivol Ekdal

I grabbed some stuff that looked like potato salad but it was Snickers, apples and Fluff.
            WTF?

That’s the second best kind of potato salad. Still far better than the kind Howard Cunningham insisted Marion make for the church picnic every year.

“…and seems to be compulsory in Montréal if you chose not to go the poutine route.”
    …………………………………………..

The gentleman from Italy ( Andreas) had this at HC I think..I don’t know the name of it, but it had a cheesy brown gravy over Waffle Fries to die for.

He couldn’t begin to finish it all..they gave him so much.. So we passed it around the table and finished it off.. Very good.. yummy.. Had I not been so stuffed from splitting Hamb. and fries with Texas I would have polished it off myself. Delicious

    • Puget Buckeye

      Sounds like poutine to me.

      • stanrogers

Well, pretentious poutine (what with the frilly chips and all). It is delicious, and even if you’ve never tasted it, merely knowing that it’s deep-fried salty fat with taters and cheese involved, you already know that. (But it’s still extra-special if it’s made with cheese curds fresh enough to still be squeaky.)

        • Puget Buckeye

That’s it!!! When the cheese squeaks on the side of your teeth. Yum.

        • Baby

Well you know how all of us HowdyConners are so Pretentious Stan..

Cheese curds that are squeaky ? eh I’ll pass..I hate cottage cheese even..

          • stanrogers

It’s not like it’s slimy or anything; it’s more like the mildest cheddar possible, with just a trace of tang.

            • stanrogers

Ha..I just got this..duh? Good one..

          • Puget Buckeye

No, they’re squeaky like mozzarella cheese. Delicious.

            • Baby

Oh I love Mozzarella cheese Buck.. Yummy

            • Puget Buckeye

Then you’ll try it when you have a chance?

        • Paul V. Tupointeau

I had a local (Newfie) variety of poutine at a truck stop once. They called it the “Day and Ross” after a trucking company. It was fries covered in gravy with little hamburger cubes and caramelized onions, melted cheese (mozza?) and turkey stuffing. I ordered the “small” and it was served on a turkey platter. Fed four. :-))

          (edited spelling)

          • Baby

OK Now THAT sounds like MY kind of Comfort food. Yummy Paul.

          • stanrogers

Yeah, that’s Newf. I could tell that a friend’s wife was upset with me when the fourth helpings of a meal (each helping being a potentially lethal dose of fish and brewis with scruncheons all by itself) were more of a question than an insistence.

            • Paul V. Tupointeau

              mmmmmmmmmmm… scruncheons!

Mom used to circle the table serving 2nd/3rd-helpings, and if she ever asked if you wanted more, it was after you’d got it. We used to laugh at that :-)))

I love that. Sounds just like my Italian mother in law.

The first time I ever sat down to a meal with the family, my father in law asked if I wanted a glass of red wine (as he was already pouring it) and proceeded to toss a piece of bread at me from clear across the table. It was then I knew I’d fit right in…LOL.

            • Jenyfurrrrr

Love eating with the Italian family or even my former in-laws … it was a MAJOR offense if you didn’t take 2nds! My daughter used to smuggle home critters from day camp when she was young.. a couple of salamanders in seed pods in her pocket, a toad in her casually hidden hand. They were put in a terrarium for the night and taken back to camp the next day, so that they were in the general area she kidnapped them from.

I find an ‘alka seltzer cocktail’ before bed wards off most hangovers. Good luck in the a.m.!

My Independence was from the Christian church that said I was going to hell because I am gay. My Mom is a great parent and put me in the only private school in the town. She did not know I was being brainwashed about so many things. I thought the Earth was created in 6 days until I was a freshman in high school. Luckily my Mom let me go to a normal high school where I learned real science and was not forced to go to church every day. I also realized I was not less than human for being gay. I found friends just like me and the love of real friends who did not care who I was attracted to sexually. There really was a lot of abuse at this school that I will not name, so my advice to parents is to really investigate what the private school you are sending your child to is teaching your child. You might be horrified.
