While you’re in Scientology, everything related to helping the organization achieve its goals is so important, nothing else is. As a member of the Sea Org, you’re always in an emergency situation, handling one top-priority last-minute must-complete crisis after another, around the clock and with your eternity and the organization’s planetary goals at stake.
But then, what actually happens?
Two things: Nothing gets accomplished, and nothing bad actually happens when Scientology doesn’t get its way.
It’s a big lesson I learned when I left Scientology: In the end, nothing bad happened when Scientology didn’t succeed.
A particular example has been on my mind lately. My very last job in the Sea Org was Case Supervisor. My duty was to get people who had made “Clear” ready for and approved for their OT Levels.
Since the release of the first Golden Age of Tech (in 1996), and the arrival of RTC Representatives on every Sea Org base, it was required that certain levels on the Bridge be “approved” by RTC before that person could move on to their next level.
My responsibility was to get the files of a person who had just gone Clear and verify that they had really made it to “Clear” (had evidence of Clear cognition as well as other indicators of Clear, which would all be apparent to me in their files).
To the man from Nantucket: I am truly sorry for the trouble you went through in late 2003.
He was freshly made Clear. A sparkling example of Hubbard’s tech in use. He was coming in to the American Saint Hill Organization (at the Big Blue complex in Los Angeles) for the next steps: getting ready for and approved for his OT Levels.
My job as Case Supervisor was to find any and all reasons why he might not be ready for his OT Levels, and get those programmed out to address and handle in auditing sessions.
But he was well and happy. There wasn’t anything really to address. The thing is, though, you cannot simply let a person go from Clear onto OT Levels. The concept is that after a person goes “Clear” they crash in other things. That is when auditing sessions come in, clean those up, then put him onto the OT Levels before his mind crashes again. The processes are called OT Preps and are part of the Grade Chart. It is expected that these steps take about two intensives (25 hours of auditing) to get through.
The problem was he got through them in about two hours of auditing, which is a big fat nope. Mind you, each time “the tech” is streamlined and “arbitraries cancelled” comes up, it’s the little things like this that they are referring to. Back in 2003, doing two hours on OT Preps was a big fat no way. They had to take at least a full intensive (12.5 hours) or even better two intensives to get through. In later years, this is very likely to have changed, multiple times.
So while I am poring over his files to figure out what to do with him, he is telling the staff he has to go home to winterize his house. In Nantucket. I can tell you that less than one percent of the staff there had any idea what he was talking about, or the importance of him needing to return home to do that.
But you can’t just leave, no matter how important you think something is. In Scientology, eternity is always at stake. As it was in this case. It’s the end of the world, puppies will die, children will starve, the world might end while he is “winterizing his house.”
For the first week, he was polite about it and tried to explain why he needed to take this trip. He tried so hard to be patient with the staff and explain it. But then it was getting closer and closer to winter, and he was genuinely becoming concerned. He had been in LA since late summer, and he never imagined he would be stuck there when winter was arriving.
It became a frantic fight for him in the end. He tried everything to reason with the staff, and they simply would not let him go until he was approved to start his OT Levels. (And remember, if he starts his OT Levels, he cannot leave until he completes through OT III).
The more frustrated he got, the more sure we were that he could not go. You can’t let someone leave who is upset! So then he really could not leave. It became an effort to watch over him and make sure he did not just take off. Because now that he was upset, he might behave irrationally and take off on his own. And that would be horrible. RTC would not approve him to start OT Levels if he was acting irrationally.
The whole thing was truly a vicious circle of how irrational Scientology can be.
He had been well and happy, and we made him angry and unhappy by telling him he could not go. Then we tried to make him happy again with auditing sessions (which cost him money) because we had upset him. There was nothing that would fix his unhappiness in session, he simply needed to go winterize his house, and nobody would let him go.
He finally found a way to dodge us and fly home. ASHO sent staff out to the airport to try to track him down, but he was gone.
He came back a week later, house ready for winter, and went on to his OT Levels like nothing ever happened.
Except it cost him weeks of extra room and board, and several extra intensives of auditing sessions to “clean up” his blow. As well as a round of liability condition as part of getting eligible for OT Levels (with him making apologies like sorry I took off, I promise to follow the instructions of the Sea Org members in charge of my Bridge progress. And I won’t do it again, etc. Until next winter).
In the end, nothing actually happened. No puppies died, no children starved, and no world was saved.
Scientology never gets what it wants, and nothing bad happens because of it. That’s what I didn’t understand until I finally got away.
