We want to thank the tipster who forwarded a rather interesting email. Our tipster was included on a long list of recipients that had been cc:ed by the person who sent the message.
We’re going to cut that emailer a break and not name her. We will say she’s a longtime Scientologist and Silicon Valley real estate agent who perhaps mistakenly included a long list of Scientologists in the CC recipients of her message instead of using the BCC option.
Yes, that means we just obtained a nice long list of personal email addresses of Scientologists, including several rather, um, important ones.
Anyway, the first thing we thought was unusual about the email was that it appears to be written by a Scientologist for whom English is not their first language — but we know that isn’t the case with the real estate agent, so perhaps she just duplicated a message she had been sent earlier and didn’t bother to clean it up.
So, without further ado, here’s the alert that was sent out…
Subject: IMPORTANT TO ALL SCIENTOLOGIST: “Where Gavin Newsom Stands with Psych if Elected for Governor of California”
My Fellow Scientologist. This is a manifesto that Gavin Newsom wrote on where he stand on Mental Health. I feel it is my duty as a patron of the IAS and CCHR that this information is know to all of us in Scientology that are fighting to get rid of Psychiatry.
Because psychiatry and religious freedom are the 2 most important issues facing the security of Scientology, this information must be know. Please pass on this vital information to all Calif. Scientologist.” (the link to the article is below)
What follows is a lengthy statement about mental health care that was posted in January by Gavin Newsom, Democratic candidate for governor in California.
We don’t want this to become a referendum on California’s governor’s race, so we’ll just note that the plan outlined by Newsom is detailed and calls for early intervention as an approach to mental illness. For some idea of how he differs from his opponent, Republican John Cox, here’s a short video that might be helpful.
What matters for our purposes is that Newsom advocates for professional mental health care, which is anathema to an organization that hates anything to do with psychology or psychiatry with a white-hot passion. Scientology advocates against the mental health care profession with its most unhinged of front groups, the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), which holds demonstrations like the one in the photo above.
Of course, it’s rather quaint that Scientologists would feel they need to get up in arms about Newsom’s candidacy. There are only a few thousand Scientologists in a state with 19 million registered voters.
But sure, Scientologists, get outraged! Take to the streets! Defeat the evil psychs and their government enablers! Hail, Xenu!
