“Grief engrams (called painful emotion engrams in the Handbook) result from losses of position, allies, or things. A grief engram is run like any other engram. Pick it up at the first moment of the awareness of loss, when the person first knew of the death, etc. and run it with all perceptics over and over until the grief is discharged. Be sure to ask what the preclear is thinking also, and to run the words of the articulate thoughts, if any, with all the perceptics, the same way as the other people’s words. If grief does not discharge in tears and if the incident does not de-intensify after several runs, there is an emotional shut-off or the person is out of his own valence. Do not assume there are no tears present if logic indicates that there should have been. Getting grief off a case is very important and all the grief which can be reached should be discharged as rapidly and as thoroughly as possible. Understand for an auditor to do a perfect job, he needs an organization that backs him up. In the freezone we don’t have the perfect set-up as auditors. We are missing the organization. We cope. Some auditors don’t have C/Ses. Some are not even trained in C/Sing and don’t use C/Ses. Some don’t have examiners. OK, so any auditing is better than no auditing, except auditing over missed withholds, but to get a person through the Bridge that takes a LOT of skill.”

1998: Scientology defendant Dennis Erlich posted an update on his copyright infringement case, and on the status of his new inFormer Ministry. “My case has been on a slow track, and headed for appeal. Currently there are several summary judgment motions in front of the judge (that’s where he can decide things without a trial, such as guilt). The scienos wish the Hon. Judge Ron Whyte to declare that they are the undisputed owners of the Sakrid Droppings from the Phatman and to declare me guilty of violating their copyrights by ‘excessive quoting.’ MoFo has a summary judgment motion on my behalf before Whyte declaring the Oatea Droppings as having been published, by reason of sale to loyal scienos and unlimited access granted to them explicitly admitted in the Warren McShane depositions. Morrison/Foerster is preparing for trial, which could be as early as next year. But don’t hold your breath. The ministry began right after I left the cult. Working alone I extricated many people from the cult between 1982 and ’89, when I finally found the Cult Awareness Network and began publishing, with the help of a few loyal ministry staffers, ‘the inFormer’ newsletter in 1990. Work has now begun constructing the ministry’s very first web site. It will feature all of our corporate papers and our 501(c)3 application (which will receive IRS approval within 2 months). We have already been recognized by the City of LA and the State of California as a non-profit religious/educational corporation. In fact the ministry has become an official vendor for the City of LA, which, by reason of selling services and producing an event for the Mayor’s Office, recently donated enough money to us that we could purchase (though only partially afford) a fine Hewlett/Packard Pavillion Pentium 2 computer, with which to set up the ministry and its web site.”

— Danny Masterson charged for raping three women: Sentenced to 30 years to life on Sep 7, 2023. Appeal now fully briefed, oral arguments scheduled for June 25. Masterson has also submitted a habeas corpus petition.
— ‘Lafayette Ronald Hubbard’ (a/k/a Justin Craig), aggravated assault, plus drug charges: Grand jury indictments include charges from an assault while in custody. Pleaded guilty on Nov 10 to a 17-year prison sentence. Now serving time in state prison.
— Aaron Matthes charged for SA of child under 12 years old: OT Scientologist facing multiple mandatory life sentences. Next pretrial court hearing set for June 19.
Civil litigation:
— Leah Remini v. Scientology, alleging ‘Fair Game’ harassment and defamation: Some defamation claims were removed by Judge Hammock. Judge Hammock’s ruling is on appeal, which is now fully briefed. Oral arguments hearing set for July 23.
— Baxter, Baxter, and Paris v. Scientology, alleging labor trafficking: Forced to ‘religious arbitration.’
— Valerie Haney v. Scientology: Forced to ‘religious arbitration.’ 15 days of arbitration completed, Val waiting for further word from the IJC.
— Chrissie Bixler et al. v. Scientology and Danny Masterson. Judge Upindra Kalra’s ruling denying Scientology’s motion to strike upheld on appeal. Scientology expected to file additional petitions before case can return to Kalra’s court.
— Jane Doe 1 v. Scientology, David Miscavige, and Gavin Potter: Case unsealed and second amended complaint filed. Scientology moves for religious arbitration. Trial has been set for January 10, 2028.
