On the Scientology calendar, after founder L. Ron Hubbard’s birthday on March 13, the next most holy occasion might be New Year’s Eve. But the odd thing about Scientology’s big New Year’s celebration is that it actually takes place a few weeks earlier at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles so video of it can be shown on December 31 at the other “orgs” around the world.
UPDATE: Danny Masterson’s attorney Tom Mesereau asked for a delay. The arraignment was rescheduled for January 20. At the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles today, Scientology celebrity and That ’70s Show actor Danny Masterson is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of raping three different women. He is not required to be in court, and we’ll be interested to find out if his defense attorneys Tom Mesereau and Sharon Appelbaum enter a not guilty plea or find a way to delay the arraignment. We were jamming Thursday afternoon when we broke the news about the stunning ruling that will force Danny Masterson’s accusers into “religious arbitration.” We barely had time to summarize Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Steven Kleifield’s 15-page order and post it to the blog that afternoon.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Steven J. Kleifield, like his colleague Judge Richard Burdge, has found that former Scientologists trying to sue the church over allegations that they were harassed years after they left it have no right to trial because of contracts they signed as members of the organization. In this case, the plaintiffs are rape accusers of Scientology celebrity Danny Masterson who had sued the church and the That ’70s Show actor over what they claim was a campaign of stalking and libel since they came forward with their sexual assault allegations.
