Sunny Pereira has another startling tale from her days in Scientology’s Sea Org today. With medical standards like these, it’s a miracle there haven’t been more deaths (that we know of.)
“Oh, there you are, murderer.”
She said it so nonchalantly. It was something she had been calling me for years. It was old habit by now.
I had spent a while trying to understand why I had this nickname, and determined it was easier to pretend to ignore it. There were only two possible reasons for the name. The first would have been because I had been pressured into having an abortion. But thinking back on that, in the Sea org, doing something like that would not make you a murderer in their eyes. In fact, it was commendable that you went through with it in order to stay in the Sea Org. The only other possible reason was because one of the staff showed up with Stage IV cancer and I could not save her life, no matter what I did.
The woman who called me that was my senior’s senior, but she ran my day-to-day operations more than my actual senior. Her name was Renee, Chief Officer Celebrity Centre International (CC Int).
“I need you to go to Shaw Health Center immediately,” she told me. And I so I went (on foot) the two miles to Shaw. Shaw was the medical facility between CC Int and Big Blue in LA. It was where Dr. Megan Shields and Dr. Gene Denk had their practice. They treated both Scientologists and Sea Org members.
I came into Shaw, and the place was super crowded and busy. I recognized several medical liaison staff from other orgs from PAC (Big Blue) and HGB (the management building on Hollywood Blvd). That was unusual. Dr. Shields saw me. “Oh good, Sunny, get over back here now.” I followed her back to a room. She took my blood and sent it for testing, then she gave me a shot of something. Then she sent me out. I went to the front desk to finish paperwork, having no idea why I was there.
I was about to head out, confused about why I was even there, when Dr. Shields ran up to me with a box of something. “How many staff do you have?” she asked me. Well, 220 CC Int, about 75 Manor Hotel. She counted out enough jars from these boxes for one per staff member, then handed them to me.
“What are these?” I asked her. “MMR shots,” she said. Um, what? She went on to explain there was a measles outbreak in Los Angeles. It was a bad enough outbreak that the county had given out free vaccines to anyone who wanted them. So Shaw took them up on it, and were advising all Sea Org members to get the vaccine.
So, um, why is she handing them to me? She asks me if I have ever done shots before. No, of course not. She ran to her office and grabbed an orange. She showed me how to hold the syringe and flick my wrist so the needle plunged into the muscle tissue. She explained that the orange was the same as a human and I could take the shots and give them to all of the staff.
What the hell? I have no training for this. She advised that it was easy and had me practice on the orange twice. I guess I passed. She shoved the vaccines and needles in my hand and sent me on my way. As I walked out, I saw other baffled medical liaison staff, bags of vaccines in their hands, looking about as confused as I felt. And so I walked the two miles back to CC Int, carrying these vaccines and needles.
Renee knew why she sent me but did not bother to explain it to me.
When I returned, I was then tasked to do the vaccines on all of the staff both Celebrity Centre and Manor Hotel. I was responsible for everyone on property getting the vaccines, no exceptions.
At the time, there was an Ethics Mission into the Org. What that meant was some Sea Org members were sent in from a higher org to “handle” some area of our org because we did not do it ourselves. In this case, the org had made it to Saint Hill Size (repeatedly meeting Hubbard’s quota expectations on statistics org wide) but then crashed after being announced at an International Event as having made it to Saint Hill Size. This mission was there to bring everything back up to awesome. Amy Mortland was the in charge of the mission.
I set up doing all the vaccines between mealtimes in the crew dining room. I was the only one allowed to give the shots, but I had helpers to keep track of who had the shot and who was left, and to chase down those who had not gotten it yet.
We had a few staff who had adverse reactions to the shots. One person had a seizure in the elevator a few minutes after the shot. I didn’t know what to do about it, and I had no one to check with or contact, as Shaw was already closed for the weekend. I was flying by the seat of my pants on this. I just helped the person back up and get oriented, then he went on his way. We did not get medical advice for anyone who had adverse reactions to the shots.
We also had newer staff members who protested getting the shots. No, sorry, there are no exceptions. Everyone gets the shot. Scream and protest all you want, you will still get the shot. If you don’t cooperate, its “to ethics” until you do. We did not mess around with non-conformists at all.
My helpers came to me at the end of the third day. We only had a few vaccines left. Most of the staff had already had the shot. We had determined that some of the persons I counted were in training at Flag, or were off property and not in LA for various reasons. The helper did explain to me that there was one person unwilling to get the shot… the Mission in Charge. Oh boy. I guess I would have to try. I went to see her. Thankfully she was very nice to me, but politely refused the shot. I explained I had to get it to everyone on property, no exceptions. She was kind enough to tell me she would check if Int Base was getting them and, if so, she would let me do the shot. About an hour later she called me over and said to go ahead. Turns out Int Base was also getting the vaccine.
After I was all done, I took a deep breath, cleaned up the mess, and walked away. Time for this murderer to get on with her next task of clearing the planet.
