A Scientologist heading for suicide — the missing Tayler Tweed Facebook postings

Tayler_Tweed3

Two years ago, we told you about Tayler Tweed, a 27-year-old Scientologist who had been working on a career in music and acting under the name Tayler DeBari before she killed herself at the home of some friends in Fullerton, California on January 10, 2014.

We heard from people who knew Tayler that in the months before her death, she had been saying negative things about Scientology on Facebook and talked about leaving it, but she had later been convinced to take those postings down. Her mother, Cathy Tweed, assured us that her daughter’s “upsets” with Scientology were minor…

Cathy, who is a Scientologist herself, denies that her daughter was turning away from the organization. “She had some upsets with the church,” she acknowledges, but she puts it down to Tayler’s anger when an ex-boyfriend began dating someone new. “She made one slight comment and then she retracted it,” Cathy says.

Her daughter was becoming increasingly frustrated with her career options, she adds.

“She couldn’t figure out what she wanted to do with her life. She felt very overwhelmed. She just got so nasty and mean to her friends,” she says. “It didn’t have anything to do with Scientology.”

Cathy Tweed told us that she and Tayler’s half-sister were getting matching memorial tattoos to cope with Tayler killing herself with a handgun. “We were shocked that she did that,” Cathy said. “But I’m at peace with what happened.”

Now, a friend of Tayler’s, Larisa Smith, has supplied us with the Facebook posts which had supposedly been lost, and we authenticated them with another close friend whose supportive responses showed up in some of them. The posts provide a troubling record of Tayler’s unhappiness with Scientology, her inability to get the emotional support she needed, and insensitive responses from some of her fellow Scientologists.

In our 2014 story, we were cautious about the role Tayler’s problems with Scientology might have played in her suicide, saying that it’s depression that usually plays a bigger role in a person’s decision to end their life. But we’re not experts about such things, and this time, we decided it would be better to call on one.

We shared Tayler’s Facebook posts — about two dozen of them made from September to November 2013 — with psychologist Rachel Bernstein, a licensed therapist in Los Angeles who was interviewed recently for the Underground Bunker by Chris Shelton.

“Besides depression, there are many other reasons people turn to suicide, and all of them fit Tayler’s situation,” Rachel tells us. “People commit suicide when…They feel there’s nobody in their family who understands; they’re made to feel there is something inherently wrong, bad, dangerous or permanently flawed about them; they feel isolated and alone; they are told they are a burden; they repeatedly reach out for help through the expression of sadness or frustration only to be shamed about needing that help.”

Rachel looked at Tayler’s postings in detail and sent us this moving explanation of what she saw…

It is clear that she was bright, introspective, and was trying to find her own voice and share what was on her mind and in her heart. She responds so positively on the rare occasions that she gets a supportive response, which just proves how much she was needing that. Most of the time, though, the responses she gets are cruel, sarcastic, judgmental, even being told “STFU.”

She was in pain. Most of her friends were abandoning her because I’m sure they were made to feel like that was their only choice, yet she was continuously reaching out. In response, she got almost no gentleness or kindness.

Things started taking a dark turn in November, and still even after posting things about how she felt she was going insane, an advertisement for Death Becomes Her, posting the number for the suicide lifeline, and telling her friends and family explicitly what she needed (“love and encouragement”), she still didn’t get what she was clearly needing.

Then, in a long post on November 30, she wrote something where she took all the blame and expressed that she was sorry for what she had put everyone else through, and that she was a mean, rude, terrible person. In response, she got 55 likes. That sent chills down my spine when I saw that, because I knew that was like putting nails in her coffin. The likes showed how much people were in support of Tayler saying that she was going to take responsibility for everything, she was the bad seed and was not going to blame anything else or anyone else, even if she was the injured party. That put almost everyone else at ease and they gave her positive reinforcement for saying she would keep her mouth shut. I have no doubt that there were many exceptions to this, but the exceptions were from people who were probably too afraid to post their real feelings about this whole situation. I kept expecting someone to make a comment like, “Why are you apologizing? This isn’t your fault,” and “Why are you saying you put your family through something when you are the one who is suffering so?” And “You are not a mean, rude, and terrible person. You are a wonderful, bright, thoughtful, and talented woman who has the right to be upset about all that happened to her.” But there were no comments of support, no kindness, acceptance, reality testing, unconditional love… Nothing.

Then I read about her memorial. I have never met her mother, but the fact that she said her daughter’s upsets with Scientology had nothing to do with why she took her life makes her sound ridiculous and dissociative, and shows that even after her daughter’s death, she is still not at liberty to speak the truth. What I wanted to hear from her were “normal” parental reactions, i.e. how she was in shock, how it was a tragedy, how she is grieving so terribly that she can barely speak. Instead she and Tayler’s half-sister were getting memorial tattoos to help them cope. That is so strangely disconnected and dissociative. Did either of them try to help Tayler cope? It’s like her family watched her drown and did not pull her out of the water or throw her a rope to grab onto as her head went under, but instead got irritated with her about the way she was drowning and the screaming she was doing while she was struggling because that was bad behavior, and after she became fully submerged, they went and got memorial tattoos to help them feel better.

As expected, a lot of other reasons besides Scientology are given for her suicide, none of which usually lead to suicide. I have never heard of someone committing suicide because their “ex-boyfriend has started to date someone new,” or that they are “frustrated with their career options.” Then her mother says “I’m at peace with what happened.” That’s a very strange comment for a mother to make. How is that possible? There is so much that could have been done, and should have been done. Where is the guilt, remorse, regret? I’m not trying to vilify her mother, as she is being put in this situation where she is supposed to split off her feelings, but the way I am used to parents responding to the suicide death of their child is that they almost always feel a great deal of responsibility, and step up and say, “We can’t help but wonder if we didn’t help her enough and in the way she needed. We don’t know if we’ll be able to ever live with knowing that the possibility exists that we didn’t do everything we could, and we will miss her every day and wonder what her life could have been like if she had gotten the help and support she needed.”

In addition, after reading through all the material, I don’t see any sign that she was mentally ill. Her thoughts were clear, and her reaction to the situation she was in and her reaction to the responses she was getting to her expressions of anger, sadness, and hopelessness were both rational and appropriate. This was a preventable suicide, and there is a high likelihood she could have had a long happy life if she had gotten the help she really needed. Scientology became something that poisoned her. It had also drummed into her that conventional therapy and medication were not a viable option for her, even though she would have been helped greatly by them and would have felt a lot of relief and support. I feel that the combination of that poison, mixed with the fact she could not get real help and was abandoned by many people who she thought loved her while she was simultaneously criticized and kicked while she was down led to her eventual hopelessness and suicide.

Thank you for that very detailed report, Rachel. And now, here is the material in those Facebook postings leading up to Tayler’s long message on November 30, 2013, less than two months before she took her life. We look forward to your thoughts on them.

I am a life-long Scientologist, raised by life-long Scientologist parents, and I have Scientologist siblings that are parishioners, employees, or volunteers for our Church. Please feel free to let me know if you have a problem with that. If you do but are for some reason unwilling to communicate that directly to me, delete yourself from my friends list immediately. Here is a link to my local Church here in Portland, Oregon!

My true Friends do NOT speak negatively and spread their secret/covert hostility about me and our friends behind our backs. They confront us BOLDLY and have the courage to voice their personal opinions directly to us. Feel free to speak up and tell me how you feel!

I have officially been censored! From now on you’ll hear from me nothing other than inappropriately cheery smiles and an entirely waxed enthusiasm, combined insincerely with a forced effort to be accepted by the Portland Suits. It would not be humanly possible to care any less than I do of what you conservative know-it-alls think of MY words, but my parents are angry so, I concede.

To the Church of Scientology of Portland staff members: Derek Meyer (Fdn FCS), Maxine Stanley-Cannon (PES Fdn), and Elizabeth Dunham (HAS Fdn)… My reports up lines (CJC/IJC/RTC/ED Int) on you three have gone unheard, without written response, and are still unhandled, I am now going public.

Tayler: “I am having trouble with the Portland Church of Scientology. You, little boy, can FUCK OFF…I already wrote reports to CJC, IJC, RTC, EDI, CCI, VP CSI, and my terminals at CC Int.”

“Cool… So, maybe you shouldn’t spread it all over fb, and keep it on the right lines?… All I am suggesting (and do what you will with it as it’s a suggestion) is to not spread it all over online. If its written up to all of those terminals, it’ll probably get resolved. You don’t need to fuel your argument even more by spreading entheta to people who have nothing to do with it.”

Tayler: “It was written up in January, February, March, June, July, August, September, and October. This is the appropriate justice gradient.”

“Well, I do believe that concludes anything else I have to say.”

OK… Here it goes… I hope everyone gets this! I love everyone here and have been going through some serious issues (as you can tell!) I have used Facebook as a way to take out my anger on some of you folks… and here it goes: “I am Truly Sorry… I really am.”

I hope everyone here can truly forgive me. I know that the first stop of fixing things in my life and the people around me is to realize that I have a problem. (No guys, it isn’t drugs, so get that out of your minds.)

My basic problem is… “here it goes” No one’s business. And this is what I have learned in the Facebook world. I have to stop airing my personal details about beliefs and family and get back to the basics…

I am not a Facebook post. My life and the frustrating things I am going through are for me to work out. I am very angry and I need to learn how to cope and deal with it… on my own.

What do I need from all of you?

Everything. Love, encouragement. I need that emotional support. I would love it if you, just drop by to say hey or “love ya, hope all is well.”

I want to end this and say that everyone here means the world to me. I really do love you all. I love my mom, my brothers, my stepdad.

I am sorry for the hell I have put them through. This is so hard.

Please bear with me here. So I have to take a break from being a mean, rude, terrible person. I have to go find a little light out there in the big bad world.

I will be better and get better, I hope to return and set an example of what “just being plain happy is.”

So I will see everyone here soon. Just takin a little break off here so I can center myself.

With love, Tay

Also, we heard from a former Scientologist who forwarded to us a message she received in November 2013 from Tayler’s mother, Cathy Tweed.

We texted a copy of the message to Cathy, and called her, hoping to get her thoughts on the message. If she gets back to us, we’ll let you know.

Here’s what she wrote on November 1, 2013…

Chris Shelton on Scientology’s media tactics

Chris tells us his new video is about Scientology’s plan for its new media center, as well as how it goes after critics.

Also, Chris sent us this notice about an upcoming event:

“This Sunday, May 1st, Jamie DeWolf and I will be at the Center for Inquiry in Los Angeles to talk about Scientology and my book, Scientology: A to Xenu – An Insider’s Guide to What Scientology is Really All About. The event will start at 11 am and go until 12:30 pm, and I will be doing a book reading and be available for book signings after. There is a fee of $8 to attend which defrays the cost to CFI for hosting it (none of that money is going to Jamie or me). Everyone is invited and we hope that you will be able to make it.”

Her mom is prob glad she committed suicide; I bet she’s at peace with it

        • Watcher

Down below, I posted a comment from one of her friends THREE DAYS after her death wishing her well in the future. WTF?! Probably wishing that in the “next life” she’ll be a more ideal Scientologist.

Also sad and shocking is that the comment received three likes.

          • $137608073

I’ve heard similar annoying comments at wakes, “Oh, he’s happy now in heaven with all his family and friends.” “He’s moved on now to the next life.” Gahhhhhhhhhhh

            • Watcher

Usually those comments are made by people who valued the person in this life, too, though as a way to deal with the loss. It seems that Tayler’s people did not value her unless what she was doing or feeling supported them and their “cause.” They had no kind words for her when she was still alive and needed their love and encouragement. Like she had no intrinsic meaning as a person for just being Tayler.

I understand what you are saying. I find those comments a bit insensitive as well, but they seem to come from a different place to me, if you know what I mean.

            • $137608073

Oh no comparison! Eventually you the veneer wears off that smarmy fake mask and Scientology shows it’s cold hard self – if it helps to know, Most people leave when they see the real face.

That “friend” probably yelled “hip hip hooray” at the service. We know for certain what they were cheering is getting away with evil conduct, yet again. Under the radars: how can you read AND BE OK WITH THIS??????

ETA: By “the woman” I mean Cathy. Just felt like I should clarify.

      • Saint

That is what she reported up lines with NO RESPONSE. To those of you under the radar, your church CONDONES the violation of your pc folders. There is no “ethics put in” when church members violate your confidences. You are supporting this with dollars and flowing power. Are you really ok with that? NB: Something about the basement of truth. Here, the basement dwellers dig into everybody’s secrets and giggle. I’d like them to go to Mark Foster’s basement of truth and go a round or two with the man in the mirror.

          UTRs This is for you^^^^^

The time is coming. Make contingency plans. Take the plunge and walk away. It is not better at a different org. It is not better when the org has gone Ideal (Portland is – and yet this happened). It is not going to get better – some time (and many $$$$) in the future.

          • Saint

How about this for a connect the dots…if the fear of leaving is at least partly informed by a fear that your “secrets” will “get out,” the reality is THEY ARE ALREADY OUT. Any group that retains its members by fear is not a group with a good mission.

Thinking about the main Scientology families, I seem to remember Roanne Howrich (Hubbard’s granddaughter) blew Int Base around the same time as Ron Miscavige Sr. I realized I’d sort of been waiting to hear about her escape and maybe her mother, Diane Hubbard Horwich, to blow too and see some kind of family reunion story there too. If $cientology were a legitimate organization or “church,” it’s Board of Directors would be responding to the continued intense controversies over its leader’s behavior by initiating an investigation into allegations about his cruel and violent treatment of staff, his lavish spending (e.g. gambling trips, extravagant perks for celebrity friends,,etc.) his hiring of PIs, his fleecing of members, his Ideal Org initiative, etc. Then they would request his resignation. And if they had the sensibilities of a true church, they would immediately cancel all disconnections and stop all fair gaming and other forms of harassment and apologize to the victims of both.

  • Rasha

I’ve been leaving notes to friends I only know on sites – most art sites – who have at times expressed their frustrations and angst and downright anger and surrender with the way things are and the way they perceive it, telling them that I appreciate them, and the things they do and say that I really get.

As soon as someone apologizes for being who they are, I get a little angry inside and make sure they never apologize to me. Because that is not what they are saying. I have a pretty good idea of the feeling of uselessness and being a burden, and of thinking that all I need to do is unload my stuff and the rest is easy….

Then I find a hand in others I value, and I refuse to let that go.

My puzzle piece don’t always fit, but it’s one of those colorful ones that you know has to go somewhere. That’s what I want to tell them. I admire your off-kilter perspective. Hugs.

    Re the update:
    Those are Scientology’s true colors.
It is extremely common for the org public’s “secrets” to be openly discusssed during the nightly ‘Product Conferences’ and Registrar meetings in order to find buttons and leverage to get them to pay.

As far as the mother’s post, Scientology bleaches kindness and empathy from people who, under normal circumstances, would have turned out to be regular folk.

  • Hamtaro

Tony’s important update about Tayler reminded me of another indecency: when I worked at the Org, there was a young man who came in every evening for auditing for several months. It was obvious to everyone on staff that he was seriously troubled. He was also a major source of GI for the Org. One afternoon, I find the ED, the FBO, the CS, the two full-time auditors and a bunch of other staff gathered outside the HGC laughing like crazy.

His auditor had revealed to all of them that, at some point during his teenage years, he’d once performed oral sex on a horse. At the time, I still believed the purpose of auditing was to help people through traumatic situations in their life, so without thinking I just yelled out “what the fuck is wrong with you people?”

I was asked to leave staff shortly afterward. For “insubordination.” Thank God.

p.s. fuck you Cathy Tweed. You’re a scourge on the very concept of a “mother.”

Re: the Update. Cathy Tweed, how could you do that to your daughter? The child you carried and gave birth to. disqus profile does not come up for a variety of reasons: recent creation, recent edit to avatar or other profile element, or no connection to this site for a long time are the main reasons.

    • Robert Eckert

sometimes opening a new tab solves the problem: he has been trolling a lot of boards for a long time (hardly ever gets an upvote), just hasn’t been here (probably because as others have guessed this is “Jeff Cigar” alias “lifter1968” banned from here and from Radar ages ago)

      • Saint

“lifter1968”? You’ve got to be f’in kidding me. I am rolllllllllling! This is a dude with a Monster tattoo, wearing a tank top, shorts, white socks and trainers. Ha hahahahahaaaa. ETA: and he’s 48 years old! hahahahaaa. Dude, you can never go back to the green. Nobody wants to hear about the state wrestling championship of 1986. Really. haha

  • April Moonlight

to “Jewish Jeff” regarding your comment: I don’t respond to trolls who make rude and disgusting comments. It’s a shame you have no compassion or empathy for others and spend your days typing mean remarks to people on the internet to make yourself feel better. It must suck to be you. 🙁

    • Saint

I have so much sympathy for Jewish Jeff. Between the creatine and the cognitive dissonance, the sympathy should … just … about … short … his … circuits. Also, pretty sure that Jewish Jeff is the nom de plume of DM, or, according to Inside Edition, “Cob” (rhymes with knob).

            regrettably, I disagree Friend E~girl.
His intent is to derail with much slime.
            It has always been so.
He shows up with his vitriol whenever Scn., Inc. is truly nervous.

            • Eclipse-girl

I fully agree he is an agitator.
He wants to an emotional response from others.

He inhabits various sites, and picks out choice topics to become unpleasant on.

I believe the troll known as JewishJeff is the same troll from long ago.
The older names included JeffCigar and Jeff1968.

They are not scientology. They are just irritating.

ETA: He would target articles on scientology, and at the time about the US girl who was accused of killing her English roommate in Italy.
He was on Radar online, a lot.
His account was removed at least two different times from Radar.

My guess is that he some how lost access to the internet for a while

This was really good. With so much talk about Miscavige book, disconnection, etc, the host of this show took a different tack. She was addressing the new Atlanta ideal org and was looking at the angle of southern culture, as well as racial and religious diversity. Tony, as always, a fount of information dropped really a lot of info in a short time. The bright host seemed to be taken aback a bit.

  • Mockingbird

Something worth noting on Scientology and suicide is that Hubbard worked very hard to induce a stark terror of the world outside the cult. Some members believe everyone outside Scientology is evil, insane and a potential murderer and rapist. They are taught we all lived a billion lifetimes of hurting, raping and betraying people and are compelled by hidden evil purposes to continue behaving that way. They are taught the cruel, selfish and hostile environment in Scientology is actually far safer and saner than the outside world.

With that mindset it is easy to see why some Scientology members see death as their only escape. They were lied to abused and betrayed so profoundly they know nothing else.

    • 5 Feet Long and Luminous

I know you are right, but it’s crushing to think about nonetheless.

      • Mockingbird

I agree. I want it to be clear what Scientology has given to the world.

    I’m so sorry you suffered.

    • PerpetualOutflow

Sorry Jimmy3. Hope your situation improves. You seem like a great guy.

      • Jimmy3

Thank you, but the pity party has been cancelled. I’m finishing the cake.

        • 5 Feet Long and Luminous

Since you decided to finish off the cake, I’m assuming you’ll be leaving these behind on your plate.

          • The behbehs! Not so little anymore. Did you read about viewers of the Philly eagle cam freaking out because they had cat for dinner? Nature ain’t always pretty.

            • 5 Feet Long and Luminous

Did they?! Oh, no. I feel really terrible that I’m laughing at that. No wonder DC put a disclaimer on their cam. If the DC eagles got a taste for feline, I’d probably turn it off and go thru the house to do a quick head count. Just in case.

They’ve been ramping up the TV ads in my country lately, in timeslots where people are actually watching TV. Not happy about that. Today it was the ad about the 70 billion people on the planet that get helped by this malignant blot on the landscape.

    • NOLAGirl (Stephanie)

Timed perfectly too. The upcoming media onslaught from ‘Ruthless’ now has its own “OSA Tactic Guide” to use.

  • Jeb Burton

Scientology is not science. It is a mad mans flim flam theory that is destructive. To you indies that still think it is the way to live your life, your have blood on your hands. It makes you feel good, so I dont care if it leads to somebody’s death. Take a good look in the mirror, and tell me that you feel good about it. You people disgust me, it is all about how I feel.

    • Frodis73

      I can get behind this.

  • Frodis73

Holy shit, I just saw that FB post from Taylor’s mom…as if this story couldn’t get more sad. Wow…I’m torn between sadness and anger.

  • JanInThePan

People ask me why I can’t look away from CO$. Because as soon as you think of them as just a ‘religion’, another child dies. This is why.

    • Lucille Austero

^^^^^This. Everyone tells you you’re a loon and snickers at your “obsession” with the cherch. And then some innocent dies. Sigh.

      • JanInThePan

It’s the kid stories that make me so blindingly angry. It’s what shocked me out of the cult I’d been in, a child, infant newborn and mom in danger. Knowing what this joke of a church does to kids.. I don’t care what you think of religion, etc..but if you endanger a child I will end you.

  • Draco

Today I’ve had a hard time trying to formulate something to say about this story because I just find it so heart breaking. It epitomizes the absolute worst in scientology.
Earlier I felt sorry for Cathy Tweed, thinking that at some time she could actually wake up (as most are nowadays) and realize what she had done to her daughter. I thought about how terrible that day would be for her.
Then I read the update that Tony posted. I now sit here weeping because of how hands on she was in her daughter’s disintegration. And I know that she can’t afford to wake up ever. She will have to cling to the idea that scientology is something worth losing a child over.
It is hard enough to come to terms with having been taken in by hubbard’s lies without having something so terrible to have to live with.
Oh Lord. It’s just horrible. I fucking hate this cult.

    • Rasha

      ^^^^^^^

  • ze moo

I am not a psych, nor do I play one on TV or anywhere else, but Taylor shows bi-polar tendencies. Her family and $cieno life seems to be reason for that. They jacked her up and then pulled her support mechanisms away. Her parents bear most responsibility for this. I blame Facebook for much of this too, social media is full of assholes and lowlifes, keep away and talk or email your friends. Social media is useful for arranging ‘arab springs’ or ‘say no to narconon at trout run’ campaigns, but not so much in your personal life.

Living in $cieno land killed her. That and idiots who don’t lock up their guns.

    • Jeb Burton

It is what the cult does. Were now hoping an admitted wife beater can take down the church and make a difference. And many here make excuses for him, and said that was in the past. But he has had no counseling and it is his way of solving conflict. He spawned DM and he is carrying on the family business.

      • Ben Franklin

Jeb, Sometimes I don’t understand you. Who is the “wife beater” you are referring to? Do you have any solid evidence of this or you are just slandering someone based on innuendos?

        • Andrea ‘i-Betty’ Garner

Ron Miscavige does actually admit to some domestic violence when the kids were young.

          • Ben Franklin

If it is a self admitted thing, I understand. I just hate allegations based on rumors.

        • Jeb Burton

He admitted to hitting his wife and kids. I dont accuse anyone of anything without solid evidence. Do some research. He is a scumbag just like his kid. Ron Miscavige is a wife and kid beater, in case you dont understand me.

          • Ben Franklin

I didn’t know who you were referring to because there was no name attached, and that’s why I was wondering, but, based on I-Betty’s comment below I now understand who you were talking about

            • Jeb Burton

I said he spawned DM. Did you think I was talking about Tony Ortega?

            • Ben Franklin

No, certainly not Tony, but the first name that came to my mind was Mike Rinder, because of the “wife beater” moniker that CoS has tried to attribute to him for so many years. I have never heard of Miscavige’s wife beating past until today, to be honest.

            • Jeb Burton

OK. I hope it doesnt take away from his story. Tony should of reported that, because I think like you, most people dont know.

        • NOLAGirl (Stephanie)

Ron admits to it in the interview. I certainly won’t make excuses for it but that doesn’t mean I’m uninterested in what he has to say about DM. No one is holding Ron Miscavige up as some sort of hero but every story that helps bring down the monster run by David Mismanage helps.

I hope Ron will seek some help and make amends to those he has hurt. While he’s doing that I hope millions read his book and find out more about the psychopath behind the curtain of Co$.

          • Andrea ‘i-Betty’ Garner

I suspect, like Leah (but on a whole different level), he is speaking up front and honestly about his flaws in the certain knowledge that they will be culled from his folders and published for all to see anyway.

            • NOLAGirl (Stephanie)

He may as well be upfront about it. From the few snippets I’ve seen of Co$ responses they’re already saying things about it. We both know though, he could be a saint who’d never done a single thing wrong and Scientology would make some shit up to say about him.

            • Jeb Burton

Thats what worrys me. Usually they make up or exaggerate the indiscretions. They have a self admitted abuser here. I hope they still hear his message. .

            • NOLAGirl (Stephanie)

I hope so too Jeb. Obviously his history doesn’t help but I think people will be interested. Miscavige has managed to pretty much remain in the shadows (outside of Co$ events) for a long time, it’s time to drag that little cockroach out into the light.

          • daisy

THIS arrows up. I would doubt any of us would promote or dismiss spousal abuse.

      • He is an important witness. Many/most/all witnesses have flaws.
Witnesses are just people who happened to be somewhere and perceived something.
I have no idea what his personal history of unacceptable behavior is, nor would I have any interest in defending or excusing it.
His credibility is the only issue in this trial in the court of public opinion.
He is a necessary and useful witness, to the goal of ending the world’s most sinister scam.

        • jazzlover

In my view (and I know we want to plump all ex’s and fighters against the cult), his is almost unforgivable – not on a “hey, I was hypnotized level”, but more on a “I let my minor son travel across the country to follow in the footsteps of a stranger” kinda way. I doubt you’d say what you said about your mother up above if she blindly let you rush to that kind of danger.

I have always been interested in Davey-boy’s youth. I was born earlier in April 1960.

I got a lot out of The Bare Faced Messiah (by Russell Miller). To me, that book was a page turner.

I am intrigued. He had help with Dan Koon. I want to know about INT base after Marc and Claire left.
            Ron Sr was there

            • jazzlover

I get what you’re saying, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that he’s not completely blameless here. I understand that what he’s doing now is good. BUT, no parent just let’s their 16 year old kid do what he let Davey do. No way, no how. Another way of looking at this: If we all got major props for just existing, life would be so much happier 😉

    • Liberated

I blame her cult addicted parents. There was nothing wrong with that kid, she just needed to feel loved. And we all know ” CO$ doesn’t do ” Love”. It’s for losers.

    • Eclipse-girl

      Published on Nov 13, 2014

In January 2014, my good friend Tayler DeBari (also known as Tayler Tweed) passed away. Today, November 13th, she would’ve been twenty-eight years old. I’ve uploaded this video again, but with more pictures of her in this one. I’ll be listening to this song all day in memory of her. I love you and miss you so much, Tayler. Happy birthday. ❤

    • First I cried.
      Then I raged.
What a beautiful child of god.

        • PerpetualOutflow

It IS special, and you did such a beautiful job! I’m sure it will be treasured by her family and friends.

  • Vaquera

On Taylor’s brother’s FB page, Cathy Tweed made what I think to be a kind post about her daughter almost a year after Taylor’s suicide (f5). I was under the impression that her mom should have disconnected from Taylor posthumously. Have I misunderstood?

Also, Taylor had a second FB page under the name Taylor Bible (Bible being her mother’s maiden name, I believe). The comments that are available to everyone postdate the FB message TO added above by about a month. Though they are only for a period of two and a half weeks (12.6.2013-12.23.2013) she presents quite happy….except for one at the beginning where she foretells the loss of a loved one. (f5) Curious.

It’s been another heavy comment day and I’ve not kept up, so apologies if the sharp research commenters in the bunker have already covered this 411.

Snip: “Once, during one of her manic episodes, she told me what song she wanted to play at her funeral.
I didn’t think much of it at the time, but now the song plays in my head over and over. And I wish that I would have been able to at least give thatto her. I don’t know where her grave is. I no longer have her moms number. But if someone here does, if somebody sees this. Please, let me know.

            • Emmy.7

I’m not, and I never have been (thank God). I never heard about it until after Leah Remini left the church. Not long after that, Tayler made a FB post about how she was a life long Scientologist. At the time, I figured it was just another religion like Christianity and it wasn’t a big deal. Right after I saw that, I deactivated my account (for an irrelevant reason), so I never saw the anti-Scientology posts she made after that.

Hi Emmy. Thanks for clarification. Sorry if my comment was upsetting or offensive to you. It has been an unsettling day in the comments today, given the subject matter we are dealing with. I am sorry for your loss.

            • Emmy.7

Thank you for apologizing. Today has been pretty rough for me as well, so I completely understand how you’re feeling.

            • Ella Raitch

I have been reading and commenting here for five years and it’s just tragic what happens to these young people born into Scientology.

I am glad that Tayler had you in her life to love and connect with her. The fact she experienced such dissonance about her life and Scientology tells me what a caring person she was.

Normal Scientologists DO NOT notice how badly Sea Org are treated – and they certainly don’t talk about it.

            • Emmy.7

I agree with you. It’s disturbing and shouldn’t be happening whatsoever. The members that see the abuse and continue to defend the church are despicable. They allow it to happen and have no excuse for their actions (not to mention, their contribution by ignoring it). Some of Tayler’s “friends” are claiming the church wasn’t responsible for her death. Let’s elaborate: if Tayler had never been in Scientology, she would’ve had a chance to get the proper treatment she needed. I’m not saying it would’ve been a 100% sure thing that medicine would’ve worked for her (at least from the get go) because everyone is different, but she would’ve had a better chance at managing her illness.

Unlike the “friends” I mentioned above, I won’t be stabbing Tayler in the back by helping silence her voice and her story. I’m helping her and the other innocent souls that are going through what she did, regardless of what those “friends” tell themselves to help them sleep at night.

            • Ella Raitch

I think we can all agree on that. And Scientology is not the only thought-prison that stops people from accessing competent assistance.

Hope to see more of you posting and sharing your knowledge

            • Emmy.7

The woman under the umbrella is my mother.

            • Thank you for clearing it up for us.

            • Ella Raitch

              Thanks Emmy

            • Draco

The mother is one of those woman in the video, helping to tie the note to the rock.

            • Robert Eckert

Ah, so I am totally misreading the situation.

            • I didn’t realize it till the very end of the vid too. Although I wondered about the older woman at the beginning.

            • Robert Eckert

Well, I’ll try to be optimistic and believe that a couple sincere people started it even if a couple of the others are just jollying along.

            • Roger.

            • Aslan’s Own

Editing my post because I just read Emmy’s post (one of Taylor’s friends). I’m glad Taylor had some real friends. The woman is evidently Emmy’s mother.

            • Draco

No. Everybody seems to love her now that she is dead. Well, you can’t get any quieter than that. Even did her memorial at CC Int. Fucking hypocrites.

            • Aslan’s Own

This whole story just makes me want to cry. Scream too. I’ve been where she was (although not in scientology) and I can’t stand the way people treated her.

            • Draco

And judging from her facebook posts, the very LAST place Tayler would have wanted her memorial to be, would be any scn organisation. I’m pretty sure that was done to show that they really all “loved” her and she just misunderstood their intentions towards her. Bloody PR show and nothing else. Makes me want to scream too.

            • Aslan’s Own

You’re right. PR. Last place she would have wanted. Stories like this in or out of scientology just make me wish I could turn back time and hug the person tight.

      • I wonder what was in that letter she wrote for Taylor..

        • Eivol Ekdal

I believe the Emmy above is the same one who replied to Sabrina’s comment 2 years ago on the bunker.

          • Emmy.7

Yes, that was me. I had been trying to reach out to as many people as possible who knew Tayler to find out what happened because I had no idea and I was devastated by her death. Sabrina was nice enough to meet with me and tell me what happened to Tayler before she died.

            • Eivol Ekdal

I am so sorry for your loss. She was a lovely person. It must be hard for you seeing all this come up again.
              Are you OK?

            • Emmy.7

She was truly an incredible person. When I first met her five years ago, I had been going through a really rough time, but she became a ray of light for me without even trying to be. She was just so vivacious, hilarious and thoughtful. She took an interest in anyone’s life, stranger or not. She was always there for you.

Thank you for your concern. Honestly, as hard as it is to see it again and see the pain she was in, I’m happy it’s being brought back and people are seeing what she went through. She was completely innocent and did nothing wrong. Her posts are disturbing, but they are so telling. NO ONE deserves to go through what she did.

            • Eivol Ekdal

              Growing up – tough.
Growing up with a highly controlling belief system – even tougher.
I had friends who had none of this crap but similar issues in general conforming. It caused them great torment until they were out on their own and found themselves. These are the people that make our world colorful.
It took guts to write that yelp review, real moxie!

And yes you can keep putting agave syrup in your coffee. Just don’t drink after noon so you can sleep. 😉

LOL thank you for answering that. xD

            • Eivol Ekdal

Have a good evening Emmy. I am going to sleep, but the bunker is always open so don’t be a stranger.

            • Dice

Thanks for stopping by and telling your story!

        • Emmy.7

It was a letter addressing how sorry I was that I didn’t know what was going on and how I would’ve helped her if I had known. As well as how much I love her and miss her and how I was going to fight for her and her story.

          • Thank you, Emmy.

          • Baby

Tears for you Emmy.. Sending positive strength to you. I can’t imagine how you are feeling. Do NOT let The ” What ifs and the I should Haves ” destroy you honey.

The taking of one’s life leave many broken hearts behind. I can’t make it better for you.. but I can tell you that not only do I care about you, but the entire Bunker.

Her story is being heard. Thank you…

Emmy I am sorry, I made a mistake down thread calling the tape self-serving. I thought you were one of the * do not blame me * scientologist. You are so young with a long life. Do not let this wreck you. Get counseling if you need it. Almost every city has grief counseling free. You didn’t know. Some of us are cynical about the cult, but not the individuals in it. I hope the ceremony helped. Come back if you need support. If you are in scientology Blow. Thank you for getting her story out.

            • Emmy.7

Thank you for apologizing, I appreciate it. I understand you thinking that we were Scientologists, but that’s why I’ve been commenting so I can clear that up. My family and I aren’t in the church and never have been. And I started going to therapy after Tayler died and I continue to do so today. It has helped me tremendously.

            • daisy

You are so lovely, answering each post. I wish I had your maturity at your age. I am so glad you are with us and your beautiful friend. Please drop by now and then and let us know how you are doing.

          • aquaclara

Oh, my, sweetie. She knew you loved her, I’m sure. She knew she had friends like you who would remember her, and fight for her when she no longer could.

Her story has had us all in tears — not just today, but going back to when Tony first posted this story. This may feel like a simple blog, but many of us have been reading here (and at Tony’s Village Voice before this) for many years. We didn’t know her, but we will never forget her.

I’ve seen the damage done by Scientology since 1975 when parents would search in vain for their kids locked inside one of the church buildings, when businesses owned by the parents of friends were threatened, and when regular citizens who dared speak out found themselves a target for harassment.

Tayler tried to speak up. That took an incredible amount of bravery. Maybe your voice, combined with hers, will help keep one more person from a similar situation.

            Hugs, honey.

      • Emmy.7

I just wanted to come back and thank all of you for your support and kindness. These last few days since the article was released have been heavy and emotional. I’ve figured out who my true friends are, who I can trust, and who isn’t who they say they are. After enduring the outcome of the article, you have no idea how much it moved me to come here and receive the thoughtful, caring responses I got. I truly appreciate it. <3

        • Dice ✓

To know that she had some friends ,that was not scientologist and that she was not totally isolated and a rebel. Makes this forum worth while. And thank you for what you have done in the past, so we know more about her and not just the “official” story created by Scientology. That makes a difference – Hang around.. this is not over! 🙂

what an awful story, what a terrible loss of this beautiful and talented girl, thrown away by her family and “friends”. Rachel Bernstein is right, she was telling everyone around her that she needed love and support, but she only got it when toeing the line of the COS. What a crock of shit. I will be less nice about it than Rachel was: her mother should be ashamed of herself, and I hope that when her piece of shit chirch crumbles around her, or when she commits some unforgivable sin among her “group” that she knows the pain and suffering that she inflicted on her child. how dare these people call themselves ethical caring beings. Fuck them all.

    • Aslan’s Own

The same person posted a video of a one year memorial some of her friends had. (Sorry — I just noticed it was already posted below.) I’m just glad that she had people who cared enough to do that.

I just realized something, what is it with Thursdays at the bunker? Today’s post was heartbreaking, plus a troll was hanging around, and last Thursday I was rejoicing in the courage of Lisa Marie, then half-hour later it’s announced Prince died. I don’t know if I can take much more.

        • Liberated

The only reason I’m asking this is because I drove by the ” Govenor’s Mansion” today, tell me are there “Pence Must Go” signs down your way?

          • salin

Only local signs. No governor, no senate, and very few presidential signs (almost exclusively Sanders – but this is Bloomington.) The only GOP bumper sticker – for any race – that I have seen was a ‘Huckabee 2016’ one – obviously from last winter.

Used to see lots of ‘ditch Mitch’ signs down here – but no anti-Pence signs.

I think there is no interest yet (because it is primaries) in the gov. office – and the general consensus is to do eye-rolls at the mention of Pence – that no primary signs for gov. are up yet.

More interesting is the senate seat is contested on the GOP side and there are NO signs. One of the candidates is the local congressman (elected by the part of the district that is beyond B-ton), but still no signage. It seems like outside of local offices the GOP isn’t putting energy into any statewide offices here – even contested ones.

            • Liberated

These pence must go signs have been around for years, ever since the discrimination of LGBT community, and now the new super strict anti-abortion laws. What I find interesting is these signs can be found in just about any neighborhood, regardless of socio-economic status.

            • salin

I think the Ditch Mitch signs here were b/c some moderates (even democrats) gave some tolerance to the difference in his and their views based on his business experience (not something I agree with). The signs gave a counter narrative and reminder/protest.

In this progressive pocket of Indiana I think there was a universal rejection of Pence in his election – and even more so after the RFA (religious freedom act – which was very anti LGBT – and overrode local ordinances that were anti discrimination). I think there is so much more opposition to Pence than there was to Daniels – that folks – before the general election – don’t find a need to state it via law signs.

Was that Cruz gaffe a hoot about ‘basket ball rings’ (instead of hoops)?

            • Liberated

              Oh, yeah!!!

What is it with Scientologists and money management?:

Tayler’s ex-stepfather, president and founder of Tweed Financial Services, Robert “Rusty” Tweed, has seven customer complaints disclosed on his BrokerCheck Report. In 2009 a FINRA arbitration panel entered an award of $338,000 in favor of a customer against Robert “Rusty” Tweed. The complaint stemmed from allegations that Mr. Tweed and other brokers had made material misrepresentations relating to a TIC investment. Robert “Rusty” Tweed was terminated from National Planning Corporation in 2005 for violating FINRA Rules.

Heart breaking story. Later revelations about Mom’s response both to her daughter (in our Proprietor’s update) and her overall stance per those saying unfavorable things about Co$ and/or the local org (far down in the posts by a poster – (DougParent?), make it even more heartbreaking and enraging.

  • Jenny Griffith

From Tony’s blog, two years ago –
” Cathy says that Tayler was staying with some non-Scientology friends in Fullerton, California who were trying to get her on track. They had signed her up for a course to learn to be a recording engineer and were trying to get her to go to the class when she managed to find a revolver in the house.”

Yes, her mother said they were non-scientologist friends, but is it possible they were scientologists trying to get get back on course? The description sounds eerily similar to the traditional clam slam.

Could we just persuade these people that the best way to ‘save the planet’ is to give lots of time and support to a child, when that child is struggling with issues of career and romance and school and . . . life? Sending one person out into the world with confidence and assurance and the knowledge that they have love and a safe place to land if needed — that makes the world better. Begin ‘saving the planet’ by checking on the well being of those closest to you. Tayler was a planet worth saving.

She paints such a detailed description of a life with zero chance at being a child. It helps to understand just how bad Laura’s and Tayler’s lives–and those of so many exes who post here–were. I wish I could give them some happy bits from my own….

The oppressive labor doled out to little kids was one thing but what was really heartbreaking was the diminishment of family. That this little girl was allowed a day per week to be with her parents at such a formative age was unbelievable to me. While reading the book I was almost talking to the parents about reaping what you sow. If you create this horrible distance in your developing children, it seems that it is just a matter of time before they return the favor.

It makes so much sense that folks like Leah Remini and Katie Holmes ultimately made their departure just at the time their children were coming of age to start this distancing practice.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing – you are teaching your kids disconnection when you spend so little time with them and show them through your actions that Scientology matters a lot more than family.

Does anyone know for sure the current status of the cadet org? I saw that it had been disbanded, but some dispute that, and say it’s just hidden. I hope it’s completely dead.

I wrote a review on Portlands Org the fall before she died. She sent me a message and Tayler and I became short term pen pals of a sort. I, a never in and her, a very damaged and broken young lady struggling with Scientology. I was hesitant to communicate with her and she understood why, agreeing that scientologists are not a group you should get to close to. I personally do believe she was bi-polar, and she told me she was diagnosed as such. She reminded me so much of the two people in my life that live with mental illness. She was very erratic and very up and down. She was incredibly fragile and quite an open book. I recall that she loved her family very much, but they weren’t speaking to her. She was very distressed over her parents purchasing all the “new” books under Miscavage and all the money they donated. She did not feel supported by her parents at all. She was excited about the new church she joined in Portland but did not elaborate. Her biggest concern seemed to be how poorly the org workers were paid/treated and wanted to see them get paid better and have benefits. She couldn’t get anyone to listen. She was a talented beautiful person and I think with the right treatment and support things would have been different. She did seem to be a lost soul, and didn’t seem to know what he place in the world was and desperately wanted to be loved and heard.

You sound very kind. Mental illness can be highly charged because it is manifest in behavior. That she was brought up by a group that not only had no use for real counseling and medication but vehemently and actively opposed the whole field of mental health was one of the obstacles that was too tough to overcome. Combine this with isolation, family and friend withdrawal and the $ci teaching that we are the cause of our own illnesses and you have a recipe for tragedy.

absolutely Glen.. It was the ” Perfect Storm.”

        • Snippy_X

And not the first one brewed up by Scientology either.

Thank you for sharing this. Glad that she knew someone was listening.

          Hi Illinoisian,

It looks like you are trying to contact me, but I can only read the “…” I recognize that sign, as I tried to reach Miss Tia through an old comment, but kept deleting the message before she had a chance to read it.

          • Illinoisian

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I’ve been trying to get in contact but wasn’t quite sure if you were around at the time.

            • salin

              😀

            • Illinoisian

              Got it!

  • noseinabk

I tried to keep up with the comments today even though I spent the latter part of my day with my oldest child’s daughter trying to chew my fingers off and enjoying her laugh at the silliest things. Later my oldest thanked me for helping her. My youngest thanked me for dinner and picking up some things she needed. She often thanks me for doing the most mundane of tasks. I’m fortunate to have them in a way that this girls mother will never understand. If she could understand it she would never forgive herself for not supporting her daughters needs above the cult.
Nothing shocks me more than the cults ability to completely cut the maternal instincts of a mother for her child.

    • Erica

Oh how I agree! It breaks my heart. Nothing, NOTHING could ever trump the love I have for my children. There is nothing as important to me as being their mom.

  • exccla

What a fucking waste! a beautiful and talented young lady with her life in front of her does this mainly because of the fucking cult. fuck!

  • Scientology killed her. I wonder how her family feels about being such rabid dicks now? End tax exemptions for all churches I am tired of subsidizing other people’s fantasies. Enjoy.

    This is truly tragic.

I met Tayler at Delphi. We weren’t really that close, but we stayed in touch some over the years. She actually had two Facebook accounts at one point. I was friends with one, but not the one that she was active on. If I had seen these posts, I would have reached out to her. This was all right around the time I was starting to learn the truth about scientology myself, reading this site and Mike’s blog.

    • Glen

Sorry for your loss. It’s heartening to know that you would have reached out to her had you known. I’m glad you made it safely out yourself.

    • aquaclara

I’m so sorry you have lost your friend. You now know the truth about this cult, so it’s doubly sad.

Thank you for adding your comments here. It’s heartwarming to know she did have friends who cared.

      Take care.

Tweeted this post with Taylor’s hashtags #WolfPack #TeamTayTay and of course the omnipresent #Scientology.

THIS WHOLE DAY IS MAKING ME MAD!!!!! >:(

First, I see the new post about Monique Rathbun. Got me pissed so I came back to this blog entry. Read the update with Cathy Tweed’s Facebook post then I got even MORE ANGRY. What kind of sick mother is this? Her daughter is exposing serious breaches of confidence among Portland org staff and rather than addressing the abuses, she is only interested in getting friends to disconnect from Tyler for posting “entheta comm”. That’s right, Cathy…make your kid feel guilty for having a moral conscience, isolate her from her friends, and assign loyalty to the cult group as a higher priority above your own offspring. It’s as if Mrs. Tweed was following a step-by-step manual of “How To Make Your Child Feel Worthless”. No motherly support whatsoever. Is it any wonder why Tyler became despondent? It’s so disgusting.

DM, I hope you choke on glass shards from your bottle of scotch.

  • CobGatYour$$

What piece of xxxx mother! Might as well pulled the trigger herself. She’s “at peace with her daughters suicide?” I could not stop crying looking at the posts. Scientology NEEDS TO BE STOPPED ASAP! It’s the children that are forced in this sick, evil cult that make me crazy mad!😡👿

  • Roger Yost

My 1st thought when reading this was: Do Not jump to the conclusion & blame everything on the Co$. Then I read the post by Cathy Tweed.

This young woman, Tayler, was begging for help. BEGGING! And she was just left alone flapping in the wind. I am beyond sad for her. She found a gun & that was her only solution. Sad & lonely don’t even begin to explain it.

Hey guys! I wanted to post here that a friend of mine (and a friend of Tayler’s) and I have created a memorial page for Tayler. Everyone is welcome to post any memories or stories they have of Tayler. The only thing we ask is to PLEASE keep the Church of Scientology and what happened with Tayler out of the page. We want to keep this positive and friendly and keep anything negative away from it. The purpose of the page is to honor Tayler, remember her and to reminisce. Thank you for understanding!

      Thanks! It will get shared..

    • Robert Eckert

Thanks. I hope that people who didn’t know her have the decency to look but not touch.

      • Emmy.7

Any negative posts that are made on the page will be deleted. There are other places to talk about the Church of Scientology and what Tayler went through, but our page is not one of them. It is strictly for positivity, and to honor Tayler and her memory. 🙂
