Ten years ago this week, we wrote about Derek Bloch for the first time at the Village Voice. He helped us tell the story of how he had been kicked out of the Sea Org as a teenager and then disowned by his own family when he revealed that he was gay. In the years since then he’s helped us expose Scientology’s repugnant and baked-in homophobia. We thought the ten-year anniversary of our first story on him would be a good time to check in with him and see what he’s up to.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’: The only movie review you need if you’re being honest about Tom Cruise

When Luke Y. Thompson (AV Club) told us he’d screened Top Gun: Maverick but hadn’t been commissioned to write a review, we knew that we needed him to write one for the Underground Bunker. Our association with Luke goes back more than 20 years, to a now defunct publication, New Times Los Angeles, where he was one of the very few reviewers in the country who actually liked John Travolta’s Battlefield Earth. In other words, Luke calls them the way he sees them. We knew he’d have a unique take on Tom Cruise’s new movie, and we weren’t disappointed. (Top Gun: Maverick opens in US theaters on May 27.)

June 24, 2020: We publish our latest interview with Joe Reaiche, someone we’ve spoken to numerous times. And once again, we talk to him about being declared “suppressive” (an enemy) by the Church of Scientology, which requires his own family to cut off all contact with him in order to remain Scientology members in good standing. That not only includes his former wife Carol Masterson and the two stepsons he’s helped to raise, Danny and Christopher Masterson, but also his own children with Carol, Alanna Masterson and Jordan Masterson.
