David Miscavige turns 58 today, and we’re celebrating with tales of birthdays past

On April 30 1960, a celestial spirit trillions of years old began a new meat-body lifetime by jumping into a newborn twin baby boy in Bucks County, Pennsylvania who was given the name David Miscavige. His sister was named Denise — she also turns 58 today — and their parents were Ron and Loretta. As Ron says in his recent memoir, Dave was a sweet little kid, and so he often wonders — what the hell happened?

A new ex-Scientologist memoir provides a journey through extortion in the rank-and-file

Books by ex-Scientologists keep arriving, and we received one this week that we didn’t even know was coming at all, from an ex-Scientologist we hadn’t spoken to before. So yes, forgive us if we were a little skeptical about whether we’d enjoy Chris Shugart’s Fractured Journey: A Personal Account of 30 Outrageous Years in the Church of Scientology.

Kim Poff, finally free to speak: ‘I want this story out. I want people to know what Narconon did.’

We talked to Kimberly Poff yesterday, the former inspector general who recently won a $200,000 settlement which ended several years of litigation with the state of Oklahoma. We’ve been following Kim’s story since she was fired for acting as a whistleblower when she revealed that Oklahoma’s officials were afraid to take on the Church of Scientology. She had recommended that its flagship drug rehab facility, Narconon Arrowhead, be shut down following three patient deaths in a nine-month period that culminated with the overdose death of 20-year-old Stacy Murphy in July 2012.

Former Scientology mouthpiece Tommy Davis has a new look and a new friend in his life

Even seven years after Tommy Davis was bounced from his job as chief spokesman for the Church of Scientology, the public still has a huge fascination for him. We’re often asked, what’s happening with that guy? So over the last few years we’ve provided regular updates about his jobs and what he’s been up to. And now that he has a new look and, apparently, a new friend, we knew our readers were going to want to know about it.

Scientologist pair running for office double down on their denials about church involvement

[Rob Lauer goes to bat for Scientologists Brent and Aimee Jones]

We have a little follow up for you in regards to a story we did last week. Our veteran readers know that for several years we’ve kept an eye on Nevada politician and Scientologist Brent Jones, who served a single term as a state assemblyman, and is now running for lieutenant governor, with a Republican primary scheduled for June 12.

It’s only April, but we already have a leading contender for Scientology mother of the year!

We’ve run a number of stories in the past about Scientologists giving up their children to the organization’s staff and Sea Org, which can be brutal places to work for almost no pay. It’s been hard to read about people like Mirriam Francis, whose mother seemed so much more focused on Scientology than her own flesh and blood, or Lori Hodgson, who fought so hard to keep her children out of the Sea Org but only saw them pulled away from her.

[Hana Whitfield, from her appearance in ‘Going Clear’]

We sure have a treat for you today. On Thursday, after we posted excerpts from L. Ron Hubbard’s most notorious lecture, his 1968 lesson about Xenu/Xemu and a 75 million-year-old genocide, we heard from someone who served with Hubbard at the time, Hana Whitfield! We hope you remember what an amazing job she did describing life on the high seas with Hubbard in the 2015 HBO documentary, ‘Going Clear.’
