Judge Steven Kleifield denied Scientology’s motions for sanctions today in a hearing held at the Los Angeles Superior Court and otherwise brushed aside a lot of whining and bellyaching by attorneys for Scientology and Danny Masterson in order to reschedule various matters in a lawsuit filed by four women who say Masterson raped them.

Scientology made national headlines when it released hundreds of balloons at the opening of the Ventura ideal org last month. Neighbors and concerned citizens complained, and Ventura Mayor Matt LaVere claimed “The truth is that the City EXPRESSLY FORBID the Church of Scientology from doing this balloon release, and they ignored us and did it anyway. There will be a serious price to pay for this. The Church of Scientology broke our laws by littering and damaging our natural environment, and even worse, they ignored our demands not to do so. I have instructed our city attorney to review these actions and to hold the Church of Scientology liable to the fullest extent allowed by law.”

Los Angeles District Attorney: Jackie Lacey leading as slow vote tally continues

Seeking her third term as Los Angeles County District Attorney, Jackie Lacey’s lead fell from nearly 54 percent to just a little under 52 percent with much of yesterday’s vote still uncounted. If she falls below 50 percent it will force a November runoff with former San Francisco DA George Gascón, who is in second place.
