Google helps Scientology billionaire Bob Duggan hide a dark family secret

Bob_Duggan_illoRecently, we told you that California pharmaceuticals entrepreneur Bob Duggan — a man currently worth $2.3 billion — had, through an agent, complained to Google about a story we wrote about him.

Duggan didn’t complain directly to us, but then he must have known that the facts in the story we wrote are rock solid. We relied on first-hand accounts, court records, and photographic evidence to show that in 2013, at the same time that Duggan and his wife, Trish, were propping up failing Scientology facilities in South Africa with large donations, two of their six adopted children suddenly showed up in that country, and were being cared for by South African Scientology families.

It suggested a bizarre trade deal — Duggan largesse saved Scientology buildings while two of their children were taken off their hands — and yet, despite those bizarre allegations, everything about the story was nailed down tighter than John Travolta’s hairpiece.

We titled it “A perplexing tale about Bob Duggan, the richest Scientologist in the world,” and published it on October 15. It proved to be one of our most popular stories of the year, as well as probably the one that took the most work (including long Skype calls to Johannesburg).

It proved so popular, that it soon became the number one result on a Google search of Bob Duggan’s name…

BobDugganSearch

We first noticed that our story was topping Google about the time, in April, that an eagle-eyed reader notified us about the complaint filed by Duggan’s agent, which was memorialized on the Chilling Effects website.

Duggan was clearly unhappy that the most popular online item in the world associated with his name was our story about his strange transfer of his adopted boys to South Africa. But rather than send us a threat letter he instead went straight to Google.

What he did, through his agent, Matt Archambault, was to complain to Google not about the facts in the story, but about the images that we’d used to illustrate it — only two of which he had any ownership claim over. Specifically, Duggan filed a complaint under the DMCA — a “takedown notice” — for six of the images in the story. The first was a headshot of Duggan that came from his own website. Duggan also complained about a photo of his wife Trish that came from her website; a collage of photos from Scientology’s Impact magazine which featured him and Trish accepting trophies from Scientology leader David Miscavige; a photo from Scientology’s website showing the grand opening of the Pretoria Ideal Org in 2013; a photo of Robin Hogarth from Robin’s own Facebook page; and a photo of Robin, his wife Carol, and their (formerly Bob’s) son, from Carol’s Facebook page. In each case, we had been careful to point out in our story where each image had come from, and that in each case the subjects in the photos had posted the items themselves. We wanted readers to know exactly where we had obtained them. (Another photo in the story, showing Carol Hogarth and the blurred-out boy, was taken by Carol’s sister Shelley Ashurst, who gave us the photo with her permission.)

Why did Duggan care that, for example, we’d used a generic promotional photo from the Scientology website about the opening of its Pretoria org? Well, it was pretty obvious to us what he was doing: He wanted Google to punish us for supposed copyright violations by de-indexing our story, making it more difficult for people to find.

We noticed the complaint about ten days after it had been filed. We hoped that was soon enough that our idea for a remedy might be in time — we asked Oregon cartoonist Chad Essley to create illustrations that we could use to replace the photos that Duggan was complaining about. Essley came through quickly, and we then announced our clever ploy once we had the new images in place.

Apparently, however, our effort to switch out the images didn’t happen in time, or Google just ignored it, because we noticed this week that our story has indeed been de-indexed and no longer shows up when you search on Bob’s name…

BobDugganSearch2

Not only is it no longer a top search result, but even if you search on the words “bob duggan perplexing,” you get an alternative URL to the story and not the original URL it was posted under. As far as we can tell, Google has done its best to bury our story.

On behalf of a billionaire. Who made his kids disappear.

And again, Google did this after we had addressed the issues listed in Bob’s complaint — we had removed the images that Duggan pretended he was concerned about.

Did Google even bother to check whether the images Duggan complained about were still in the piece? Does it matter now? Would they respond to an “appeal” of some sort? Our experts tell us trying to get through to Google and convince it to explain itself is about as quixotic a task as there is in this Internet age.

So we decided rather than go begging to Google we would write this story, and let our readers know what kind of interference the search giant is running for a billionaire like Duggan.

And, if our readers read, link to, tweet, Facebook, and share this story to as many people as they can, it might just rise up on Google’s search results, and help direct people to our original story. At least that’s the theory. We’ll see.

  • Skallene

I just looked up “Bob Duggan Perplexed” in Google and there were three articles came up in connection with the “Underground Bunker.” Now, instead of just the original article, there is also an article about how Google helped Bob Guggan. The internet is not always a friend to the rich.

    • bobcox

But very few people in the real world will ever google the phrase: “Bob Duggan Perplexed.”

What’s important is for one of Tony’s articles to be a top search result for a simple search of “Bob Duggan.” That was the purpose of today’s post.

I think Tony should just run the same damning story again with a slightly different title, and if Duggan’s henchmen successfully fight it Tony can just run it again. Hopefully Google would eventually get fed up with Duggan’s complaints.

      • Ardent

I worry that if Tony did this he’d be ‘poking the bear’, and unpleasant internet consequences could occur. Google, sadly, appears to be aiding and abetting the cult. I’m not big on conspiracy theories, but they may well have staff in Google who, shall we say, “answer to a higher power”.

        • Suzanna Nielsen

          Ardent,

However, yes, it has the same meaning as poking a skunk.

Why is an alternative URL vs the original URL an issue? If it links to the same piece then why would that matter?

    Just curious…

    • Tony Ortega

It was just a sign, to me, that the original one has been buried. Even a more targeted search like ‘bob duggan perplexed’ brings up the alternative one only. I couldn’t find any search that would bring up the original URL.

Welcome to the Church of Scientology – Indoctrination for New Members

Welcome to the Church of Scientology.

You have made a very wise decision to improve yourself through the use of our highly effective spiritual technology.

An exciting spiritual adventure awaits. Our copyrighted spiritual
technology will allow you to precisely date locate, re-experience, and
thereby erase all of the painful engrams stored in your reactive mind.
And as you move with GAT II’s fastest-ever speeds up the Bridge to Total
Freedom, you’ll quickly become a Clear who has no reactive mind — and
then onto the summit of the OT levels!

Scientology’s electropsychometer — or “e-meter” as we call it — will
probe the deepest recesses of your prurient, festering, and filthy
self-absorbed mind, thereby relieving you of your hidden evil purposes
and the vast reservoir of guilty secrets that lay hidden just beneath
the surface. We know what makes you tick and it is not good.

The e-meter is your friend and so is your auditor. Likewise, all of us in the Church of Scientology are your friends.

We care so very deeply about you.

It is for this reason that you must, while in the recorded sessions with
your auditor, unreservedly confess to us all of your horrible crimes
and sins in order to free yourself. For example, we must know the
intimate details of your secret drug-fueled masturbatory orgies. What
detestable fantasies run through your head during these assuredly
    self-hating bouts of onanism?

And what of embezzlement, grand theft, or any other felonies you have
committed and do not want the authorities to discover? We need to know
the details of just exactly what you did, how you got away with it, and
how much money is involved. Please be assured we can certainly make
“problem money” go away very quickly thereby relieving you of any undue
    concerns.

As for your current marriage or primary relationship: If the other
person is not a Scientologist, or is not willing to promptly become a
Scientologist, why then they must be gotten rid of immediately. Drive
them from your life now! If needed, we are quite proficient at helping
you make these hateful anti-Scientologists go away and even disappear.
The same applies to any of your friends who are not friendly to
Scientology. We are very friendly. As Scientologists, however, we simply
do not care to associate ourselves with Suppressive Persons (SP’s).

SP’s are quite insane and are actually criminals. As such, SP’s are
opposed to anyone getting better by using Scientology’s safe and
effective drug free solutions to life.

For your own safety you must stay away from SP’s. We will tell you who and who is not an SP.

We are the most ethical group on the planet.

Your secrets are unquestionably safe with us.

Your auditing sessions are recorded only for internal training purposes.

You must help us help you. You must never try to hide anything from us.
You must never keep any secrets from us or attempt to hide any money
from us. You must never run away from us and make us come after you
    because we will.

Please do not confuse our intense love and affection for stalking. For
instance, if you come to home to find your fellow Scientologists
conducting a detailed inspection of your residence and possessions, you
need not be alarmed. We are simply acting in your best interest by
taking away from you those possessions we feel could harm you. Such
possessions include, but are not limited to, computers and all other
devices capable of connecting to the internet or placing calls to your
so-called family and friends. We have issued you a two-way radio. You
can call us if needed. When we call you on your radio, and we will
several times each hour to check in on your progress, you must answer.

Instant obedience is the way of life in Scientology. You must use every
waking moment to improve and perfect your instant obedience and
commitment to the Church of Scientology.

You will be precisely indoctrinated in order to achieve the absolute
state of spiritual enlightenment. While this is achieved by a strict and
hygienic regimen of painful and soul-rending confession,
malnourishment, and sleep deprivation which results in alternating
states of giddy euphoria and abject self-debasement, we assure you this
is a very high spiritual state. Indeed, when this exalted spiritual
state is attained the reactive mind erases. Suddenly you “go Clear”
    because you are Clear!

We will present you with a handsomely framed certificate verifying the
State of Clear you have reached. This certificate may be displayed in
your home. This certificate is all the proof needed to verify that you
are an advanced spiritual being whose IQ and abilities mark you as
being better and smarter than the seven billion inferior people on this
    planet who are not Scientologists.

It is an actual scientific fact that when you improve yourself using
Scientology you are vastly superior in every way to what we secretly
call “homo saps” or “wogs”, i.e. non-Scientologists.

You will, with time and discipline, most certainly become an Operating Thetan, or “OT.”

And when you become an exalted OT VIII like Tom Cruise, you too will
know the seventy-six trillion year old hidden Nazi history of
Psychiatry. You too will be the only one who can help at the scene of an
    accident.

This completes your “Welcome to the Church of Scientology” Level 1.

Our uniformed security personnel will now escort you to Room 5A. There
we need you to quickly sign some paperwork authorizing the Church of
Scientology to implant a micro-GPS device behind your left ear. This
device includes a sound chip. Should you fail to answer when we call you
on your radio, this device will emit an undulating shrill pitch until
    you answer our call.

Sounds like the most extreme totalist cult ever . An abusive relationship with all of the power in the hands of the master / power holder and all of the responsibility and liability resting on the overwhelmed and abused victim.

Utterly deplorable abuse from Hubbard the dark messiah and deluded fraud . As a malignant narcissist he craved power and wealth through slaves and unending deception. That he absolutely denied the rights and very humanity of all others was of no concern at all to him .

That DM was of similar character and temperament and gained control of the cult through iron fisted ruthlessness is truly unfortunate for his many victims.

Lron and his minions besmirch the good name of Evil………

    • Mockingbird

Odd cherry picking to point out onanism . The “sin” of spilling the seed rather than impregnating a brother’s widow is highly disputed as to meaning .Some claim it shows God’s disapproval of coitus interruptus while others site it as condemnation of masturbation .But Onan obviously was in fact not masturbating.

Odd to combine elements from Christianity which Hubbard clearly denies , and even claims the anti Christ role in OT VIII , and other practices in a plagiarized mish mosh of occult and pseudoscience .But megalomaniac cult founders often use syncretic doctrine plagiarized from many sources , so it really is par for that course.

Some reject the concept of sin entirely and feel it is a control method for degrading and persuading people.

Geeeze it’s like Bob doesn’t want anyone to know he is the billionaire behind the criminal, mafia type organization known as Scientology. Perhaps he doesn’t want anyone to know how his children are treated in the name of his religion. Or maybe he wants to keep his friendship with the staff abuser and good son, and all around family man Captain David “let him die” Miscavige. Naw, that would require a conscience. Just a simple search for Bob Duggan, brings this article up.(fifth)

    • Snake Plissken

Yep his attempt to hide one article now created two he has to deal with, kind of funny how that internet thingy works.

  • The Dude

My friends at work are always giving me funny $cio stuff. But i thought that this one was a gem. One of my cooks ripped it out of a weekly newspaper called The Dig.

  • Free Minds, Free Hearts

Tony’s article today comes up as the third item in a search for Bob Duggan. As Todd Tomorrow and Snake Plissen point out, his internet problem articles have now doubled!

  • Supper Powers

This article is coming up 7 with Bob Duggan Google search for me on my above-average phone.

  • Suzanna Nielsen

    I like this one:

this is what i got when i googled it..

    • Suzanna Nielsen

      You are lookin good Miz!

      • AintMizBahavin

Thank You Suzanna how are you doing?

        • Suzanna Nielsen

          How are you doing?

    • Tony Ortega

Searching on “bob duggan perplexing” is not the issue. No one would search on that. It was only an example I was using to make it clear how deeply Google has buried the original story.

The only point is, what happens when you Google Bob Duggan’s name alone.

      • Suzy

It is not found at all in 34 pages of results. Google slapped a big penalty on that page. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many Scientology related post were ranked when searching just “Bob Duggan” or “Robert Duggan”. His secrets will catch up with him.

        • Suzanna Nielsen

          Streisand Effect…………..march on…!!!

      • Snake Plissken

This Article is already at number three when you Google Bob Duggan, it might be just as easy to publish an encore copy of the first one Tomorrow with the cartoon drawing instead of the picture.

        • Eclipse-girl

Mr E did it on his computer, using only “bob duggan.”
Todays article came up 5th, on the first page.

      • lmnop

        exactly!

  • SarahDB

Googling Bob Duggan alone just now, today’s post came up third! The original story was nowhere to be found, but Rinder’s blog on him was on page 2.

  • Sid

We should have a Bob Duggan WEEK

Prizes for the kiddies. Trophies. Certificates.

    Day 1: Duggan shoop contest.
    Day 2: Duggan haiku.
Day 3: Duggan made up funny stories.
Day 4: Duggan board games where he tries to conquer the world.
Day 5: Duggan hide and go seek. He can try to hide on the internet but can Bunkerites find him.
Day 6: Where’s Duggan’s kids today? Stories of space opera.
    Day 7: Duggan ??

    • Sarah James

“Where’s Duggan’s kids today?” Good question.

I concur . We should let those low profile docile censorship tolerating folks who would never bring negative attention to a powerful authority figure contribute their input on this issue . You might have heard of them : Anonymous.

  • Imagine how much Church “Registrars” in the Vulture Culture can anticipate…. 3 billion as of recent articles..
Someone sent out the Business Week article as spam to the flock to show how well one can do when in Scientology ! 🙂

    • ze moo

The regs have a unique place in $cieno history. They are the only modern equivalent of the old mission holders still in existence. The mission holders kept too much money in Lron’s not so humble opinion and he sent his goon, the Mighty Miscavage to break them. More money flowed into Lrons suitcases that way. Who else makes any money in the clampire these days?

Those who reg today’s whales, have a precarious position. Take that 10 or 15% or kick back a lot more to DLHDM? One has to be in high favor to get the Duggan account and be high in Duggan’s favor too. Not an position anyone would envy. I do have to wonder how much micromanaging DLHDM runs on those who watch the whales and clebs?

I just don’t see the Sea bOrg being able to handle that job.

Does anyone know who the top regs are?

    • George Layton

Operation “Buy The Farm” is in effect right now, If Bob needs any inside info on any deal the infiltration is in the works.

  • Agkistrodon

Yo! if you type “bob duggan strange tale” you’ll get your story up on third listed on Google.

Boys and girls, can you say “The Barbara Streisand Effect”?

  • Charmaine Roger was Super Power’s chief fundraiser. She extorts 100 million a
year for the Church from the Flag Land Base and is a living nightmare in
    terms of money extortion.

She is Bob Duggan’s registrar. She has bragged that she is going to get all Ideal orgs of South Africa paid
    for by Bob Duggan.
When Charmaine has decided to get $$$ from you, she stays with you from dawn til dusk. She even waits outside the rest room and continues the sales pitch when you are out. She eats with you every meal.
    She shadows you til pay.
She has become a Duggan “insider” and Trish Duggan loves her even going so far as to pay all expenses for Charmaine’s wedding and have a chauffeur limousine pick her up from the airport. Charmaine is South African.
She is legendary for her money extortion skills

    • ze moo

She can’t use those same tactics on Duggan. Or could she? How broken to the wheel is Duggan?

    • Hamtaro

Funny story: Charmaine and a whale (who shall remain nameless) double teamed me at FLAG back in the early 90’s for a Super Power reg cycle. She brought along a set of basic blueprints with her as a sales tool. At the time the top floor of the SP building showed a very large round empty space. While pointing to it, Charmaine would describe how some “big being” OTs could move through physical space without using their legs. When I gave her a confused look, she whispered “teleportation” and the whale nodded in excited agreement. Imagine my surprise 20 years later when the building is opened and I find out all they do in that room is run around a pole…using their legs, of course!

      • Snake Plissken

“Charmaine would describe how some “big being” OTs could move through physical space without using their legs.”

Pfft … their OT powers have nothing on mine, I was doing that this morning at 65 miles an hour none the less.

      • TheMirrorThetan

“Charmaine would describe how some “big being” OTs could move through physical space without using their legs.” Yeah that’s called being punched and knocked flying by Dave the dwarf.

      • Enturbulated Masterbator

Oh God, “Double teamed at FLAG” sounds like a nightmare porn.

    • Enturbulated Masterbator

Caption: “I caught a whale and it was this big.”

    • dchoiceisalwaysrs

It will be an interesting day when Charmaine a South African and her husband Bruce a Canadian get deported for all the fraud and extortion they have committed over the decades. Shame on you Bruce, at what point did you lose your integrity that you had when I knew you in the 80s?

    • Robert Hammond

Thanks Karen. I posted this question above, but I wondered, Doesn’t Scientology claim to be able to cure cancer and other diseases with auditing? It seems hypocritical that Duggan profits off of Big Pharma when Scientology is so against drugs.

      • Robert ~~
Scientology Inc has become extra leery of promising cures for illnesses,,. due to legal liability.
Every Emeter has a sticker stating the E meter cures nothing, this was the result of some big FDA raid in Washington Dc where the E meters were confiscated.
This does not stop a Reg saying “Give me money for 100 hours to fight your cancer…”
Jeffrey has been posting all the contracts one signs in the “Cherch” and one of them that a public has to sign is that “no results are guaranteed.” NONE. This is so they are off the hook on a no result case.

        • Robert Hammond

Thanks, Karen. Yes, those contracts are totally unconscionable. As you say, it doesn’t stop the salespeople from implying that they can show you how to become ’cause over MEST’ and postulate your healing, right?

I imagine that many Scientologists really do believe that auditing and going up the bridge can help them cure diseases. Even though Hubbard claimed going clear would give people perfect eyesight and memory, I still see OTs wearing glasses and reading off prepared statements (so much for photographic memories.

    • Juicer77

“He talks of “the body harmonious,” his idea that the body can be made to fix itself.”
Won’t DM be just a little peeved that he didn’t laud the praises of Scientology more directly? Or is it truly about the cash?

  • Jgg2012

This article now comes up fifth on “Bob Duggan”. Is that because it mentions Google?

    • Suzanna Nielsen

Just came up # four for me.

Doesn’t the internet suck for amateurs?

      Also no#4 on Bing.

    • Snake Plissken

It’s because of the traffic and number of unique hits this page is getting relative to the other pages

  • Dave In Ajax

what would be interesting to see is if someone setup a google word ads campaign for the link to tony’s original story with the keywords being bob duggan, it would then be a paid link and show up at the top of the page
we know the entire link is not banned, and google loves money, so I bet it would be listed :=)

  • outraged

Not at all surprised about The Google. They have now become just another overfed corporation leaking money and ignoring their public. They keep making changes that are not benefical to anyone and ignore all of their users. Check out this thread:

Over a thousand posts by over 700 people who HATE the new Chrome bookmark manager. NO ONE from google responded at ALL to anyone. And this bookmark manager update was tested in December, 2014. No one liked it then either. But google ignored everyone. Their help forum is now updated and impossible to use.

They have become the new Microsoft. In fact, at this point, Google is worse than Microsoft.

  • Robert Hammond

I am sorry that Bob Duggan’s son died of brain cancer and I’m glad that this led him to a pharmaceutical company that legitimately helps treat some kinds of diseases with science based medicine. Of course, I’m not happy that he donates millions of dollars to an organization that is at war with medicine and promotes pseudoscience (not to mention kidnapping, false imprisonment, human trafficking, homophobia, fraud, and tax evasion). Isn’t this a contradiction?

Also, doesn’t Scientology claim to cure cancer with auditing? If not, what do they claim to believe about cancer and medicine? Why can’t they just postulate their diseases away with cause over MEST? See: http://www.xenu.net/archive/disk/NOTs/medical/healing.htm

    TROLL TIME:
Everyone here on the bunker is simply jealous of BOB’s Success and would go up the OT levels if they had his level of money. Also, since Bob is clearly helping kids,. It begs the obvious question what are your CRIMES against kids?
    End TROLL TIME.

I know its your and not a real sic-lon or asshole who just trolls.

We are a mixed bunch at the Bunker.
In my own situation – Mr E and I own our home. We saved.
We are NOT even close to the 1% but who cares.

If Mr E and I had that kind of $ as the duggans, we would educate our kin first and foremost.
We would establish scholarships at our respective high schools, and the University that we both attended.
We would look to help poverty world – like FINCA or other micro-loan organizations.

      • Ardent

Yes, it astonishes me how these billionaire types seem to rarely act as philanthropists, even though they are positioned to become so. Many of the Robber Barons of the 19th and 20th C became public do-gooders. Bill Gates does good with the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.
BUT we can’t hold billionaire Scientologists to those standards because Scientology is predicated on selfishness in a very fundamental way. There is only ONE real cause: Save The Planet (by buying up real estate and bilking the public). Very High-minded.

    • beauty for ashes

Its true I am jealous of the money Bob wastes. There are ways I would love to use that money.

    • SP Wogsy

My answer is no I am not jealous. I am pissed this idiot is supporting Scientology. This is one of the things that just pushes my buttons when I look back at all the money I paid as a public. All my money went to help this sociopathic midget dick who committed horrendous crimes against people financially, spiritually, and emotionally. If someone said to me “Hey Wogsy, you are going to spend your money and work your ass off for the next 4 years whether you like it or not and the money doesn’t go to you.” I would rather have spent that time, money and tears for the education of someone who was actually really fucking helping in some way such as a bioengineer or something – just makes my blood boil. Fuck Duggan and his money.

      End Rant.

      • Missionary Kid

        AMEN!

      • Ardent

        Good rant, Wogsy.

  • Supper Powers

If we go to the original article and try to breathe some life into the comments section, will that help draw it forward a little? I don’t really know how this works, so it’s a legit question.

            LOL.
A Why We Protest post about Duggan shows up on page 11. Otherwise the original family story is buried so deep there are pool services and car salesman more easy to find than he is!

              Tony, call an Uber! ;D

      • jazzlover

Maybe re-titling the original article “Bob Duggan – Humanitarian” would work?

        • Dave In Ajax

probably would work, but pointless now, as the new post points to everything and on the first page with links to all bob duggan articles… another FAIL

    • Dave In Ajax

that won’t help, google has limited that link in its search parameters, if you enter the link itself it will show up as number one, they have a formula or a logarithm they use, but nothing will bypass it (I don’t think) by responding in comments
I think the only way is what I posted below….pay for it

  • Pamplemousse

I’m a never-in but I feel a kinship with the people here, mainly because you’re on the side of truth and also squarely against something evil. Is there a site or page that can explain why people typically join Co$ to begin with? Why do most people join — is it the promise of personal benefits? Is that the lure, and then you later become idealistic about clearing the planet, or what? Also, are most people who join Co$ generally very uninformed and just curious? I am curious about why people join Scientology in the first place? What’s your theory on that, or personal experience? Is it the promise of all those wins? The promise of being powerful in life? Of course, if you were ever in Co$ I understand you were lied to. (“Freedom” being promised as they lead you to demonic bondage.)

    • Missionary Kid

I would recommend http://www.xenu.net/, and that will point the way to many other ones. For visual examples, Going Clear, both the documentary and the book would be an excellent place to start. Bare Faced Messiah, Miss lovely, Blown for Good, are also reads to see what $cientology is really about.

The problem is that, with every contact, $cientology lies about it’s purpose and positions itself as the answer to life’s problems, whether they are worldwide, or personal. Their means of operating is to find out what a person wants, then saying, “We can help you with that.” Of course, one must take a course to find the answers, and the seduction of critical thinking starts.

    • Robert Hammond

Hi Pamplemousse. I’m also a “never-in” as are most of the people here (it seems). Did you already see Going Clear? I thought the movie (and book) did an excellent job of showing how different people joined for various reasons. Some wanted to improve their relationships, others save the world, or get “super powers.” I don’t think it’s the same for everyone. As they target each individual according to their personal “ruin” or greatest need.

Like smoking cigarettes, compulsive gambling, or other addictions, it’s easier to start than to stop. Similar to bad relationships. We’ve all probably done things that we went into because of poor judgement or clouded emotions, or in some cases, total fraud and deception.

Combatting Cult Mind Control by Steve Hassan is another good book that deals with all kinds of destructive mind control, not just religious cults.

    • Ardent

I love your Avatar name, Pamplemousse!
Years ago my friend from Quebec and I would start idiotic banter regarding ‘Le (or La) Paplemousse Vert’. For some reason we though this was hilarious. It remains one of my favourite French words.

    • MostEthicalPimp

Very few people join today since the internet has became omnipresent. Today’s cult members are largely old stock or new brood. If you want to see a few new cult members for yourself go to The Acting Center page on Facebook. One thing too is like many religious folk they, the majority of parishioners, tend to be very nice and work hard to give new members a good impression.

      • Saltarello

I’m kind of getting the impression that this guy thought he could make his PR problems disappear by throwing money at them. Really not an option in the internet/social media age.

        • Robert Hammond

Like most Scientologists he lives in a fantasy world where they think people will take them seriously or go away quietly if they threaten and bully. Welcome to the real “age of answers.”

    • Ardent

What a beautiful Avatar image, Saltarello. From an illuminated manuscript?

      • Saltarello

Thanks. From a painting, I think, not a manuscript. I cropped it from a cd cover, but I don’t remember any specifics about the origin of the image.

  • aquaclara

I’m stunned that Bob Duggan would think that whining to Google would help. What a wuss. Does anyone recall the google “free advertising” that Scientology boasted about? Makes me think there is a Scientologist at Google rigging the stats.

Or maybe money talks. But Tony’s story 1 and 2–today’s, are rock solid, and WE have both long memories and click power. So I clicked to this story, as well as the original, on three devices repeatedly today. And detest abusive parents like Duggan, so I can re click pretty much every day, often. And maybe it will persuade me to pick up Twitter, so I can have some more fun.

Chad’s artwork is terrific. I think everyone should see it via a link to both today’s and the original post. I’m not yet caught up on all of today’s comments, but there are sure to be some great comments and suggestions.

Duggan, people who treat their kids like they are disposable are despicable. And no amount of money can fix that. One day, you will meet your maker, and you might be stunned to find that He is not a fan, either.

Wire Service Media Release (06/13/2015) Social media is buzzing this morning about Robert Duggan, creating a ‘Streisand effect’ whereby an attempt to hide, remove, or censor a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely on the internet. Facebook, Twitter, Google + and other social forums are spreading the story far and wide. Billionaires make mistakes too and this one is a whopper, filled with sauce.

Billionaire pharmaceuticals entrepreneur Bob Duggan may have made a giant ‘foot in mouth’ mistake by filing a formal complaint with Google about a story published by Tony Ortega on The Underground Bunker. Duggan filed six copyright claims to Google under The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that are available for viewing on the ‘Chilling Effects’ website.

    • Ardent

Remarkable! Now we wait and see if the story gets longer legs! Obviously, I sincerely hope so. How very, very sweet.

      • David E Love

I wrote and submitted to the Wire Service and it took them at least 4 times longer than usual to publish. I had to send the Wire Service an email and ask WTF was taking so long? 🙂

        • Ardent

Well done! Your persistence paid off. As I said, let’s cross fingers and hope the story finds legs! Again, bravo, David

      Really fine news interview.

    • Ardent

Thanks Vaquera. That was very interesting interview, and I found the host engaged and engaging. He really let Paulette and Tony speak, which is refreshing,

    • Robert Hammond

Wow! That was an excellent interview. So funny how Scientology shot themselves in the foot again by bringing up Charles Manson in their rebuttal. Ok, so let’s talk about Charles Manson again.. “Yes. He studied Scientology while in prison and was really into it.” Good example of KSW.

    • Interested

Damn. Can’t hear anything, simply took me to a news page. Is there a way of listening to previous interviews?

    • Juicer77

Why do they keep reiterating that this was a rogue group within the Co$? It made the impression that the hierarchy, penultimately Hubbard, had little or no knowledge of their activities.

Way O/T and forgive the self-promotion, but I just realized that my novel, The Light is free on Kindle this weekend. The semi-autobiogrphaical story has a lot to do with cults, drugs, and other misadventures. • ReallyMGM

I’m binging on the Bonnarro live stream. Hozier then Mumford and S. Tomorrow will be Robert Plant and Billy Joel.

      • Ardent

Plant and Joel performing together? That seems bizarre.

        • ReallyMGM

Noooo! Plant, then Billy Joel closes the festival. I saw Plant last night and he is still incredible, even with laryngitis. and Keb’ Mo opened for him… Incredible

I’ve seen both of them several times, but can’t picture them on same stage in my wildest imagination. But the Elton John/Billy Joel concert was one of the best I ever saw….

  • Davka

Late to the reading party and off topic re: dear Mr. Duggan, but I just finished the book. I’ll be processing it a bit, but three impressions – kudos to Paulette for her willingness to let Tony tell a story, warts and all. The degree of depth, planning calculation and foresight of Guardian Office operations. Machiavelli had nothing on LRH. And finally, thank you to the Proprietor – for the book, for the blog, for making it so I am so far down the rabbit hole I’ve actually used enturbulate in a sentence, for shining a light on this corner of bad, for making my mother worry that I’m going to join Scientology because I talk about it so much, until she watched Going Clear and she truly understood, for all that, thank you.

(You all may now go back to trying to understand the mystery that is Google).

    • Ardent

Hi Davka. Just to say my opinion is that the only really good thing Hubbard ever did was coin the word ‘Enturbulate’. It really is, in every sense, a very useful word. Needless to say, I admit this grudgingly because everything else about that degenerate pig dismays and disgusts me.

    • 0tessa

About ‘enturbulate’: Hubbard did not exactly invent this word.
It comes from latin: ‘turbo’, meaning (also) mental confusion and someone who stirs up trouble.
In English ‘turbulence’ and ‘turbulent’ are being used, but not exactly in this meaning of mental trouble.
      (For the non-exes.)

Hey, sorry u no hear from me. my thumb in a splint and so i have to peck type. i been indulging in the air disaster stuff. recently i took apart the air france a320 crash at an airshow fly over. if u don’t mind, i’d like to ask your opinion… do u think it was a cover up? i’m tending to lean toward the conspiracists lol, since it was proven in court that the black box was not the same black box in the plane. what about you?

i read sky gods but to be honest, it was focused on the business side of things and that’s just not my cup of tea lol. otherwise, i can see it is a really good book for people who love that kind of stuff. i already was kind of familiar about how the pilot life is not as glamorous as it seems, and that sometimes, or actually many times, pilots have brutal schedules and low pay. i have to say, the pan am pilot sky gods got slung back to earth in enumerous gut punching blows. wow.

so now i’m reading one of the air disaster books. i’m bunker clueless right now but i know if anything big happens i’ll get email notification.

im looking forward to checking out the second 2nd link u gave me. thanks.

        • Todd Tomorrow

Hi, So sorry to hear about your hand. Gosh, I sure know how those things can hurt. Seems that the older I get the longer it takes to heal, too. I have these big dogs and I’m so thankful to have my nephew help me or I don’t know what I would have done over the years. Ugh!. I read Skygods, a long time ago but I think it gets its point across. They were the first to do it all and they wrecked more aircraft than any others had at the time. What made it interesting to me was how much you were not able to question the pilot. If you look at that fact alone then we would have never had the larger accidents like the two 747’s in Tenerife. Capt. Vanzantan had to go and him being a,”skygod” everybody on that plane was afraid of him. It explains all too many accidents. Pan Am, was the flag carrier of the United States, an International symbol that all over the world was recognized more than the symbol of Coke a cola. Growing up I never imagined that I would join the elite jet set in my early 20’s and go all over the world. Politically, the book showed that politicians in Texas didn’t like Pan Am and I’m sure you got several examples of how they were forced to pay more than everybody else for numerous things. In their lifetime they owned over 73 jumbo jets(Not at once), which would just crush them during oil crisis’s which happened too many times.
Most importantly they were the first to try it all. There were no airports back then so they made their planes into boats. Also, they were the first to address the Skygod syndrome and try to correct it. I thought you might enjoy the history of it. Even towards the end when I flew PanAm it gave you a certain mystique as a person who traveled the world. As I mentioned sometimes I’d get on those 747’s and they’d be maybe 7% full out of Seattle to London. Also, it has been said that without their aircraft many Generals said we would have lost the war. It has been so long since I read it but it really came down to them not having friend’s in DC.
One of my favorite stories was http://blog.nasm.si.edu/aviation/december-7-1941-and-the-first-around-the-world-commercial-flight/. Can you imagine being in the middle of the desert with your camel and suddenly this big noisy flying boat comes over the horizon? Must have scared many people.http://blog.nasm.si.edu/aviation/december-7-1941-and-the-first-around-the-world-commercial-flight/ Who would have thought later that the Japanese attack on the other flying boat would have started a trend against the US. Later to play itself out in numerous hijacking, planes being blown up on the ground and lastly, over Scotland.
I kept a journal which has since been lost but I was going to write a book about my exciting youth one day. I was in Madrid, and met this Brazilian model. I ended up spending the night with them and in the morning went to check in for a flight back to JFK. I told the person behind the desk that I’d already flown over 60 thousand miles that year and that,”I’d done my time in coach.” She stared into the screen and said she could see that but it hadn’t clicked in yet. She went over and got her supervisor and he said he’d think about it and meet me at the gate. Sure enough, he was waiting there with a new boarding pass and I was upgraded to First class. In First class you got a bed to sleep in and 7 course meals. Internationally, I’ve never gone back. I had truly done my time in coach.
I wish you would have liked it more. I can’t remember if it went into detail about all the First things they had done. As I mentioned I had also learned how to fly free after that and be upgraded. The world was my oyster and sky was the limit! Gotta run to a meeting.

          • Mymy88

i loved your reply and i have a lot to comment about it, but you forgot to answer my question about the airbus a320 crash – pilot Asseline. He tried all these other things to prove his innocence, but everything was disproven except the black box switch. That was verified to have happened, so what do you think?

            • Todd Tomorrow

I think he was given the wrong numbers to input into the plane. Reminds me of the(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_New_Zealand_Flight_901 DC-10), which was new at the time and crashed into the Artic on sight seeing cruise. You have to remember that this was a completely different way of flying and it required the input of the correct numbers especially to try an odd move like that. The L-!011, was a very safe aircraft but it had all sorts of redundancy systems. Pilot error was the only thing that ever caused one to crash. Airbus, was in a hurry to make a name for itself and trying these silly things is usually when you start to have a chain of events that cause a plane to crash. Embarrassed enough I think that airbus(Scarebus) did everything they could to truly figure out what happened. First you have a pilot who had never tried anything as strange as this and then he was given the wrong input numbers to fly by. Lucky, anybody survived. Suprisingly, Pan Am was one of the first to get a great deal on these wide body aircraft and needed them badly to save fuel. I think the French made a mistake and though it has been mired in controversy, it wouldn’t be the fist time. Had a coverup been found out that would have been the end of Airbus so I guess it could be either way.
I was coming back from Vegas last month and sat next to a flight attendant. We were in the second row and it was fun to talk about all the different types of aircrafts, old airlines..Her boyfriend had come over to United to Pan Am and we talked about that for awhile. I then asked her which she preferred, Boeing or Airbus? Without thinking or blinking she said,”I prefer Boeing aircraft.” Well this woman seated in the front row of first turned around and gave the flight attendant and I an ugly stare. We were on an United Airbus A320. LoL.
