 We’re back in our underground bunker after a rather eventful trip to the Texas hill country.
The cats genuinely seemed happy to see us. The dog even came over for a rub. We’re still in recovery mode, and we hope by tomorrow to be more caught up on the things going on in the rest of the Scientology Watching world that need our attention. We have Narconon news to catch up on. More court documents to show you. A couple of interviews that we’ve meant to get done. But we had to put everything on hold for what turned out to be a fateful couple of days at the Comal County courthouse. [Source] After two days of live-blogging here in New Braunfels, Texas, we left the Comal County courthouse yesterday afternoon with more questions than answers in the harassment lawsuit brought by Monique Rathbun against the Church of Scientology. But after our last entry in yesterday’s report, we learned some additional details about where things stand as Judge Dib Waldrip considers a couple of motions filed by both sides. To review, on Thursday opening statements and testimony were presented in a hearing to determine if a temporary restraining order that prevents Scientology from continuing to surveil Monique Rathbun would be converted into a temporary injunction, lasting the life of the lawsuit. Yesterday, Judge Dib Waldrip allowed opening statements and testimony in Monique Rathbun’s request to convert a temporary restraining order into a temporary injunction in her harassment lawsuit against the Church of Scientology. But today, the temporary injunction hearing is being put on hold as the church’s motion to disqualify Monique’s attorney, Ray Jeffrey, becomes the focus.  Day One just ended in the temporary injunction hearing of Monique Rathbun’s harassment lawsuit against the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige.
We live-blogged the first half of the day’s session, which included opening statements by attorneys on both sides. But then Judge Dib Waldrip called for a ban on recording devices during Monique’s testimony in the afternoon, so we had to quit live-blogging and went back to pen-and-paper tech. It was old school time! Monique gave two hours and twenty minutes of testimony guided by her attorney, Ray Jeffrey, and after a short break, she then was cross-examined by Church of Scientology International’s San Antonio lawyer, Les Strieber, for another hour or so.  Today and tomorrow, at the Comal County Courthouse Annex on Seguin Avenue in downtown New Braunfels, Texas, a temporary injunction hearing is scheduled to take place in the lawsuit filed by Monique Rathbun against the Church of Scientology and its leader David Miscavige, who is responsible for a campaign of harassment against her, Monique alleges.
Monique herself is prepared to testify today in a hearing to determine if a temporary restraining order will be converted to a temporary injunction, which will keep Miscavige and the church from surveilling and harassing her throughout the life of the lawsuit. But will the church pull a fast one and grant the injunction, preventing any testimony today? That might be one outcome, or the church may be in for some of the most damaging testimony since Debbie Cook’s day in court in February 2012.  Marty Rathbun and David Miscavige, back in the day When Mark “Marty” Rathbun filed an affidavit last week saying that his former employer, David Miscavige, firmly rules every aspect of the Church of Scientology and oversaw its dirty tricks campaigns in Texas, we expected that the church might respond by calling Rathbun a liar. Instead, Scientology is crying foul because Rathbun told the truth. In a stunning, if predictable, move, late yesterday the Church of Scientology asked Comal County, Texas Judge Dib Waldrip to disqualify Monique Rathbun’s attorneys and cripple her harassment lawsuit because, the church says, Monique’s attorney Ray Jeffrey and his team improperly used “confidential and attorney client privileged information” when it allowed Marty Rathbun to submit an affidavit in his own wife’s lawsuit.  Leah Remini finally stopped with the coded messages and spoke directly and publicly about leaving Scientology today with her appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show. But it still was a very limited statement, and nothing like the detail that we provided when we broke the story of her defection on July 8 and in a lengthy interview with her sister Nicole on July 18.
It’s a big deal that Leah said anything at all on such a popular daytime show, and Ellen’s reactions are priceless. But essentially, Leah’s story remains untold by her, and we’re looking forward to her going into so many things we’ve learned about her defection from Scientology: the scene at the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in 2006, the three months of interrogations she went through when she dared to ask about the disappearance of the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, and how she managed to convince her entire family to leave with her. They had been sent out to Florida by Alfreddie Johnson’s Scientology front group, the World Literacy Crusade, and were led by WLC’s executive director, Hanan Islam, who told parents and teachers not to worry, she wouldn’t “push any religion” on the kids. But soon enough, pupils at the Life Force Arts and Technology Academy were being herded into Scientology events at the Tampa org.  Never forget In 1979, the full extent of Scientology’s dirty tricks campaigns, illegal break-ins, and smear attempts had been revealed in documents seized by the FBI two years earlier. One of the targets of Scientology’s destructive schemes was the Clearwater Sun, a daily newspaper that served the town Scientology had stealthily taken over in 1975. Documents seized by the FBI showed that the Sun‘s publisher, editors, and reporters had been targeted with surveillance and smear schemes. Church spies were planted in the newsroom and advertising departments, plans were made to lie to advertisers to get them to drop the paper, and other plans were hatched to devalue the paper until the church could buy it and take control.
