Sunday Funnies: Scientology Puts the Fun in Fundraising!

AmberWheresShelly

Ah, it’s Sunday, time to go through our mailbag and see what items our great tipsters have sent us during the week. We love to post the wacky mailers and fliers that Scientology sends out to its members, and we have a nice collection this time. But we wanted to start with this photo sent to us by Amber, the young woman who posed for this shot in front of the “Ideal Org” in Florence, Kentucky. Nice T-shirt!

Scientology’s Crumbling: Can Gerry Armstrong Begin to Think of Crossing the Border?

Jon Atack is the author of A Piece of Blue Sky, one of the very best books on L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. He has a new edition of the book for sale, and on Saturdays he’s helping us sift through the legends, myths, and contested facts about Scientology that tend to get hashed and rehashed in books, articles, and especially on the Internet.

The Church of Scientology may be around for years to come, but it’s in such dire straits at the moment, we can’t help thinking about some of the consequences if it suddenly went belly up. One of the first things that comes to our mind are the many people whose lives are affected negatively on an ongoing basis because of the church’s legacy of ripped apart families, onerous legal settlements, and silencing gag orders. One of the first people we’d like to see sprung from years of legendary harassment, for example, is British Columbia resident Gerry Armstrong, who avoids stepping foot in the United States because of a legal history that is almost too outlandish to believe.

Leah Remini Retaliation? Suddenly, Scientology “Fair Gaming” Of Critics Is Way Up

Claire Headley and the boys: Are these kids so threatening, they deserve to be stalked by Scientology's private eyes?

Claire Headley and the boys: Are these kids so threatening, they deserve to be stalked by Scientology’s private eyes?

Since it was revealed that Leah Remini was breaking away from the Church of Scientology, her family has been anticipating that Scientology will do its thing and go on the warpath.

Now, we have evidence that a massive campaign of Scientology “Fair Game” has begun — aimed not at Remini and her family, but at longtime critics who have in the past couple of weeks seen a huge increase in harassment.

Karen de la Carriere was pranked by someone who called the Los Angeles City Health Department on her. Marc and Claire Headley are being stalked by private investigators again, but this time it was so brazen, their children were targeted with surveillance while out playing. Mike Rinder, meanwhile, has undergone a sleazy new round of online targeting and in-real-life snooping. And we know of several others who are also suddenly being watched and harassed.

Scientology Admits Connection to Slimy Anonymous Attack Sites — Again

WhoIsPaulHaggisThe Hollywood Reporter has a nice scoop today: An open letter from Crash director Paul Haggis about his friend Leah Remini’s defection from the Church of Scientology.

The world became aware of Haggis’s own departure from Scientology in Lawrence Wright’s epic February 2011 New Yorker profile, “The Apostate.” And as we reported when we broke the news of Remini’s defection on July 8, one of the things that got Remini in some hot water with Scientology “ethics” officers was that she stood by Haggis when other Scientologists didn’t.

Now, he’s standing by her. But what also caught our eye was another stunning admission by Scientology’s hapless spokeswoman, Karin Pouw, who has once again admitted that the church is involved with anonymous websites that smear the reputations of people who dare to speak out about Scientology’s abuses.

DEATH AT SCIENTOLOGY MICHIGAN DRUG REHAB SPARKS WIDESPREAD INVESTIGATION

Amber Bullins

Amber Bullins

More than a year ago — on May 19, 2012 — a 22-year-old woman from North Carolina named Amber Bullins died at Tranquility Detox, a Scientology-based drug rehab facility in Battle Creek, Michigan associated with a man named Per Wickstrom.

Former employees of Wickstrom tell us that it’s only in the past few months, however, that the Battle Creek Police Department has begun to investigate the death in what is becoming a more general probe of Wickstrom’s two rehab centers in the town. (He owns businesses — or the buildings they lease — in two more Michigan towns, and has plans for another in Michigan and one in Indiana.)

We have received information that the investigation is taking a hard look at those facilities and the kind of complaints that plague other businesses run on Scientology’s drug rehab model, known as “Narconon.”

Scientology’s Needle Exchange: When David Miscavige Got Technical

EmeterClaire Headley is taking us on our journey to train as Scientologists. She and her husband Marc were Sea Org workers who escaped from Scientology’s International Base in 2005. She spent years working with Scientology’s “tech,” and was trusted to oversee the auditing of Tom Cruise. Go here to see the first part in this series.

Claire, after last week’s interruption for a discussion of “disconnection,” we’re getting back to our progression in Scientology this week.

CLAIRE: Yes, let’s get back on track! After Pro TRs and Upper Indoc TRs, our next step is the Professional Metering Course.

Jim Lynch, Scientology’s Shill, Dies at 59

Jim_LynchJust last week, news organizations around the country (and overseas) reported that Scientology’s propaganda magazine, Freedom, had placed an ad for a new writer.

Now we have some idea why the magazine is hiring.

We have learned that on July 19, Jim Lynch, Freedom‘s main correspondent, died in Boca Raton, Florida.

After Epilepsy Deaths, Scientology Website Still Extols Drug-Free Approach

PfaffDrawing

We told you about Jonny Jacobsen’s latest investigative coup — a detailed story about a largely untold 25-year-old death at Scientology’s “Flag Land Base” in Clearwater, Florida.

Heribert Pfaff was only 31 when he died during an epileptic seizure while under the care of Scientologists, who had convinced him to go off his seizure medicine and trust in handling his disease only with Scientology “auditing” and vitamins.

Tomorrow, Jacobsen is putting up part two of his story, and he gave us a sneak-peek at a surprising element of it: To this day, Scientology, at its website, is still extolling the benefits of handling epilepsy with auditing rather than medicine.

With Leah Remini Under Attack on Twitter, TV Actor Christian Stolte Was a First Responder

Christian_StolteFor several days after the news of Leah Remini’s departure from Scientology broke, we watched other Scientology celebrities use Twitter to go on the attack.

But then, we noticed that another member of Hollywood was going against the grain. Christian Stolte is a familiar face for fans of Prison Break and Chicago Fire, and over several days, the clever actor skewered Scientology and the people who have been criticizing Remini.

And now that we’ve talked to him, we’ve learned he’s a complete riot.
