Once again Luke Y. Thompson (AV Club) has given us an exclusive film review you’ll find only here at the Bunker. Our association with Luke goes back more than 20 years, to a now defunct publication, New Times Los Angeles, where he was one of the very few reviewers in the country who actually liked John Travolta’s Battlefield Earth. In other words, Luke calls them the way he sees them. He last provided us with what we still consider the best and most truthful review of Top Gun: Maverick that you’ll find anywhere. (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One opens in US theaters on July 12.) Continue reading Our mission, that we chose to accept: Watching Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt become a cult leader

We were stunned to see the news in the Guardian that Steve Cannane’s publisher, HarperCollins, had not only settled the six-year lawsuit over his book Fair Game, but that it was issuing an apology, and according to the Guardian, Cannane himself would be required not to say anything. Continue reading Steve Cannane’s statement as publisher settles ‘Deep Sleep’ lawsuit over his book ‘Fair Game’

[The spaceship-like entrance to Scientology’s northern California underground vault]We’re always encouraged when an Underground Bunker reader takes a deep dive into Scientology’s arcane depths, and this time a reader has come forward with some eye-opening research on Scientology’s most secretive branch, the Church of Spiritual Technology, which operates vaults for storing Hubbard’s writings and lectures in order to last for thousands of years, and also operates the compound where we believe Shelly Miscavige is being kept out of sight. Today, part two: CST’s property holdings. Continue reading Secrets of Scientology’s most secretive branch, part 2: CST’s property holdings

Jon Atack’s piece for us this week about Charles Manson and Scientology was such a hit with our readers, we knew we had to get him on the podcast this week to chat with him about it further. Continue reading PODCAST: Jon Atack on Charles Manson and Scientology

[Attorney Brad Edwards]As we expected, the parties in the Bixler v. Continue reading Jane Doe 1 attorney asks for leaked evidence in Danny Masterson case, Scientology pushes back

[Charles Manson’s involvement in Scientology is well documented. So Jon Atack looked into a new theory of the Manson murders that is gaining a lot of traction and that for some reason completely ignores Manson’s interest in L. Ron Hubbard’s ideas.] Continue reading Jon Atack takes issue with new theory about Charles Manson that ignores Scientology
[Shelly Miscavige in the 1990s, and her 2010 driver’s license photo]Journalist Yashar Ali posted a bombshell investigation to his Substack last night. After six years of reporting, he found that when the LAPD met with Church of Scientology executive Shelly Miscavige in 2013 after Leah Remini had filed a missing person report, the fingerprints that were taken from Shelly didn’t conclusively match what was already on record — but rather than investigate further, the LAPD covered up the discrepancy for the church. Continue reading Report: LAPD covered up that Shelly Miscavige’s fingerprints didn’t match in 2013
