Troublemakers: The women who won’t keep quiet about Scientology

TroubleWomenFour

We’re just back from what turned out to be an incredible day here in Adelaide. Not only was it a big day here at the Underground Bunker with our big Leah Remini scoop, but we also had an event to put on here in this South Australian capital, and it was great. Our thanks to Bryan Seymour and Nick Xenophon for helping us put on a fun show at “The Wheaty,” the funky entertainment space at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. And now, for the real capper to our day…

THE LEAH REMINI FILES: AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT THE ‘KRs’ THAT INFORM HER MEMOIR

CPsimFOUsAAbTeg

On Friday, Leah Remini will provide a glimpse of her explosive tell-all, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, with an hour-long interview on ABC’s 20/20. The book itself comes out officially four days later, on November 3.

But today, the Underground Bunker has an exclusive that not even Remini’s book reveals: In-depth looks at the “Knowledge Reports” (also known as “KRs”) written by Scientologists who informed on Remini as The King of Queens star began her doubts about Scientology in 2006 and then left it for good in 2013.

Scientology cries religious discrimination in appeal brief filed in Maryland zoning fight

TroutRunIn June, Scientology suffered an embarrassing defeat courtesy of the Frederick County Council in Maryland. You probably remember the drama as the council denied Scientology’s request that a 40-acre parcel of land it had purchased in 2013, known as “Trout Run,” be put on the county’s list of historic places. Why did Scientology care that a decrepit fish camp in rural Maryland be designated a historic site? Because it wants to turn the place into a tiny, 20-bed drug rehab group home for its Narconon network, and the only way it can get the zoning it needs is through the parcel being put on the list of historic locations.

Jon Atack: Scientology’s ‘past lives’ don’t pass the giggle test

Jon_AtackJon Atack is the author of A Piece of Blue Sky, one of the very best books on L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. He has a new edition of the book for sale, and for more than a year on Saturdays he helped us sift through the legends, myths, and contested facts about Scientology that tend to get hashed and rehashed in books, articles, and especially on the Internet. He was kind enough to send us a new post.

We rarely ask ex-Scientologists about their own experiences in past-life therapy. (When we have got around to it, the results were pretty great.) We’re glad you brought up the subject, Jon, and we’re looking forward to what you can tell us about it…

From our man in Europe: Details on the Dutch denial of tax exemption to Scientology

Jonny Jacobsen

Jonny Jacobsen

Our man in Paris, Jonny Jacobsen, fills us in on some details about this week’s decision by a Dutch appeals court that Scientology should not get tax exemption in that country because of the prices it charges…

A Dutch tax court on Wednesday denied Scientology the tax-exempt status of a public benefit organisation, ruling that it was clearly a commercial enterprise.

This decision comes after last December’s Supreme Court ruling overturning an appeal court decision that had gone in Scientology’s favour, as we reported here at the time.

The technology of ‘ruining’ people: Jefferson Hawkins on Scientology’s opening pitch

Jefferson_Hawkins_ObeyJefferson Hawkins was once the top marketing executive for the Church of Scientology and helped it reach its greatest extent with the famous “volcano” TV ads in the 1980s. He’s told his tale of getting into and out of the church with his excellent books Counterfeit Dreams and Leaving Scientology, and he’s previous written a series about Scientology “ethics” for the Underground Bunker.

Laura DeCrescenzo answers Scientology ‘religion’ gambit on eve of key hearing

Laura_DeCrescenzoLess than seven weeks away from a trial she’s been awaiting more than six years, Laura DeCrescenzo has to get over yet another hurdle this week placed in her way by the Church of Scientology.

Laura sued Scientology in 2009 claiming that she’d been abused in the church’s Sea Organization, and that she’d been forced to have an abortion while she was still 17 years old. Her case has been through a very complex history — including a failed petition by Scientology to the US Supreme Court, which resulted in the release of thousands of crucial documents. In 2013, Laura’s lawsuit survived a major step when Scientology’s motion for summary judgment was denied by Judge Ronald Sohigian. We were present for those fireworks as Sohigian found that Laura’s accusations were credible, and deserved to be heard by a jury. Sohigian then retired, and eventually the new Judge, Rolf M. Treu, set a trial date of December 7, 2015.

Two years after Scientology’s ‘Super Power’ debuted, it’s still a flop

SuperPower2

The Telegraph yesterday posted a number of photos from inside the “new” Scientology Flag Building in Clearwater, which actually opened a couple of years ago. (This isn’t even the first time we’ve seen actual photos from inside the building, which we brought you in 2013.) The occasion, the newspaper said, was that the photos had been released by “Vantage News,” which is a PR firm in England. So, in other words, this was the latest “look upon our works, and despair” moment from Scientology leader David Miscavige.
