Jefferson Hawkins was once the top marketing executive for the Church of Scientology and helped it reach its greatest extent with the famous “volcano” TV ads in the 1980s. He’s told his tale of getting into and out of the church with his excellent books Counterfeit Dreams and Leaving Scientology, and he’s previous written a series about Scientology “ethics” for the Underground Bunker. Continue reading Jefferson Hawkins: What those Scientologists in yellow T-shirts at a disaster scene really want

Yet another photo of Tom Cruise at the recent Scientology annual IAS gala in England hit social media today, and this is the best one yet that unambiguously shows the actor making the scene under the big tent in East Grinstead, England. Continue reading Can the tabloids ignore this photo of Tom Cruise getting his Scientology on?
[Leah Remini, Lt. Andre Dawson, Shelly Miscavige] “Hurricane Leah,” former Scientology spokesman Mike Rinder has dubbed it, and as the Leah Remini media storm continues, we’re just trying to keep up with all of the reactions to her landmark book, Troublemaker. Continue reading Hey, Miscavige, quit calling Leah Remini names and produce your wife already

Last month, we had the opportunity to attend the premiere of Louis Theroux’s fun new film My Scientology Movie at the London Film Festival. After the screening, we were invited by the producers to have a drink, and Louis came over to have a talk. We engaged in about an hour’s worth of nonstop talk about Scientology, and was it fun. We can’t share a lot from it, but we did call up Mark Bunker and tell him one thing that Louis asked us: When is “Knowledge Report” coming out? Theroux said he was very much looking forward to the documentary, which Bunker has been working on for about five years now. Continue reading Hey, Mark Bunker, what’s taking that film of yours — ‘Knowledge Report’ — so long?

On November 16, it will be ten years since Comedy Central first aired the South Park episode titled “Trapped in the Closet.” The episode brought to many people their first exposure to the wacky contents of Scientology’s secret Operating Thetan Level Three material, in which founder L. Ron Hubbard explains that each of us is infested with invisible alien souls left over from a genocidal incident that happened 75 million years ago, courtesy of a galactic overlord named Xenu (pictured). Continue reading Ten years ago, ‘South Park’ rocked Scientology in a way it’s never recovered from

Last week, we revealed the contents of numerous “Knowledge Reports” — spying dispatches — that Scientologists submitted about Leah Remini, and which form the basis for some of the most important parts of her new book coming out tomorrow, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology. We were careful, at that time, just to stick to the parts of the book that were related to what was in the KRs, which we had obtained some time ago. Now, with just a day to go before publication, we’re going to talk a little more about just some of the things we found to be important in the rest of this landmark book. Continue reading Chapter by chapter, the best parts of Leah Remini’s book ‘Troublemaker’
We asked our man in Paris, Jonny Jacobsen, to give us some thoughts from his notebook about his first week covering Scientology’s criminal trial in Brussels. (That’s him with your proprietor this July.) Here’s his attempt to catch us up on what’s been happening…
Just recovering from the first week’s coverage of the trial and trying to gather my thoughts before diving into the next piece. Continue reading Jonny Jacobsen: Reflecting on the first week of Scientology’s criminal trial in Belgium
Jon Atack is the author of A Piece of Blue Sky, one of the very best books on L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. He has a new edition of the book for sale, and for more than a year on Saturdays he helped us sift through the legends, myths, and contested facts about Scientology that tend to get hashed and rehashed in books, articles, and especially on the Internet. He was kind enough to send us a new post.
The axioms! Thank you, Jon, for bringing them up. We have been derelict in taking a closer look at them. We’re very interested in your thoughts on Hubbard’s “self-evident truths.” Continue reading Jon Atack: The ‘Axioms’ — L. Ron Hubbard’s attempt to make Scientology sound ‘sciencey’

What a day it’s already been as the community at the Underground Bunker prepares for tonight’s big event.
