In 2013 we wrote about Carol Nyburg, a familiar face for many former Church of Scientology members who recall seeing her at the Flag Land Base in Clearwater, Florida. Wealthy Scientologists from around the world spend vast amounts of money to visit Flag, Scientology’s “spiritual” headquarters, and Carol was the person who helped you set up your accommodations and welcomed you when you arrived. Continue reading Carol Nyburg is back, and she has a Scientology story that will rough you up Pastor Willy Rice of Calvary Church in Clearwater, Florida told his congregation that the church would host a “public forum” about Scientology on July 22 with Leah Remini and Mike Rinder which would be filmed as an episode of their A&E series, Scientology and the Aftermath. But after the pastor sent out a message about the plan, the event was canceled. Rinder said something about it at his blog, and on July 23, Pastor Rice talked about it during his Sunday sermon. One of our readers, Glen Alpert, took the time to transcribe Pastor Rice’s message, and we thought you’d find it interesting. It’s a shame that the event didn’t happen, but Pastor Rice doesn’t appear to be giving up on his idea about educating people about Scientology. Continue reading Jon Atack: The biggest thing L. Ron Hubbard got wrong about Buddhism Perhaps the best thing about the decade I’ve spent reporting on Scientology is the people I’ve met, many who have become friends. Continue reading Bryan Seymour takes a Scientology field trip, and we’re the better for it We first wrote about Derek Bloch at the Village Voice in 2012, and he’s been a pretty constant presence here since then. You probably know his story — that he was kicked out of the Sea Org for being gay, and then his family disconnected from him in the Scientology way. Continue reading Derek Bloch on fighting Scientology ‘disconnection’ in an unaired TV series Continue reading Paulette Cooper at 75: Still unbreakable, and still Miss Lovely We spoke to Ray Jeffrey yesterday about the petition he filed on July 5 along with Elliott Cappuccio and Marc Wiegand, asking the Bexar County District Court to order that their former clients, Mark “Marty” Rathbun and Monique Rathbun, sit for depositions and turn over financial records. Continue reading The Rathbuns hire a lawyer, and Ray Jeffrey answers questions about his legal salvo |
