Regency Outdoor caves to Scientology, cancels ‘disconnection’ billboard

Brian_Kennedy

[Brian Kennedy of Regency Outdoor]

Another billboard company has caved from the pressure applied by the Church of Scientology. Phil Jones learned this afternoon that Regency Outdoor Advertising, which had planned to put up Phil’s billboard this weekend for Tuesday’s unveiling, has now cancelled on him.

We talked to Phil’s sales rep at Regency, who told us that the decision was made by owner Brian Kennedy. Why did he change his mind? we asked. “I have no idea. He’s not disclosing it,” she said, sounding defeated.

We reported on Saturday that Scientology had tasked its outdoor media buyer, Dennis Holt of US International Media, to head off Phil’s billboard. According to Phil, who heard it from Regency, Holt had offered to buy massive amounts of billboard space from Regency, but had also used intimidation.

Something apparently worked, but we’ll be surprised if Kennedy explains what that is.

With two companies now turning him down, Phil says he’s not giving up.

“There really are not that many billboard companies. I know there are other ways to do this, but they really don’t have the impact of a billboard. I have to keep going.”

maybe the next time a billboard deal is made, it should be kept private until it is up

    • The real billboard is just a little extension of what is about to come.

      • Juicer77

Just a little stretch and warmup here… (f5)

  • pat k

This granny is ready to put the first bumper sticker on her car EVER! Love to every family and a soft place for those disconnected.

  • TheHoleDoesNotExist

So, I guess this means the billboards across from the FBI, Labor Dept, IRS and ICE buildings are a no go too now? Now That would really suck.

    • Dave In Ajax

interestingly enough, i hear Ted Cruz the canadian born republican candidate wants to abolish the IRS, what affect on scientology would this have???

      • TheHoleDoesNotExist

My brain tonight can only handle so much of the crazeeee! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • You are violating protocol again, Agent Moxy.

      • TheHoleDoesNotExist

Wait, I thought. Well, I was just kidding, of course.

  • Joe

I would be lying if I didn’t yell “WHAT THE FUCK!?” when I read this. All I want to say is don’t give up, Phil. Success is just getting up one more time than you were knocked down.

As hard as it is I want to find a silver lining here:

    1. I want both Outdoor and Regency shamed for caving. As everyone points out, there was nothing distasteful or inappropriate about the billboard itself, so anyone who gives this story a cursory inspection will come to the conclusion that either (a) the head executive decided it wouldn’t be worth litigating with Scn because you know those fuckers are going to sue, whether or not their suit is frivolous or (b) they found dirt on the head executives and blackmailed them. If they want to cancel the billboard then whatever, but I want them to admit that they did it because they’re spineless and capable of being intimidated by a criminal syndicate.

    2. Eventually I think this is going to become a David vs. Goliath type story. What company is going to have the stones to finally put up the billboard? There has to be one company out there that can use the business and will relish the publicity of being the first billboard to standup to these complete fucking dildos.

    • Dave In Ajax

      you forgot

      c) here is a big cheque, easiest and simplest way to make things go away

    • chukicita

I don’t agree that everyone here is spineless.

Regency at first was supportive. But *they have no dog in this race*. They DO, however, have a business that understandably for them, comes first. I have no problem with Regency backing down under the pressure of overwhelming litigation. It’s not their job to stand up alone against the cult, but it is everyone’s job to call out the CULT – not the businesses that are victimized by the cult’s oppressive policies and procedures.

      • Joe

So under that logic why should any business or organization or even any human being stand up against Scientology? They’re pretty unequivocal in their commitment to sue or threaten to sue and harass anyone who stands against them. If self-interest was the only thing that mattered no person or business would ever do or say anything critical of Scn, but without people like Paulette Cooper or Lawrence Wright and businesses like Time magazine or HBO then “everyone’s job” to call out the cult would be impossible because no one would know about them or what they do.

        • chukicita

Perhaps you’re missing my point. You can’t expect anyone else to do what you might be willing to do. I don’t think it was their idea to pull the billboard, and neither you nor I have any idea of the responsibilities or priorities outside our beef with Scn, Inc. that these folks are facing in their lives.

Frankly, we don’t even know what happened here. At first, Phil was pleased with how they were willing to do business at all. They sound like good folks, and I’m more inclined to consider them victimized by a barratrous paranoid organization from doing their normal business

  • aquaclara

And employee morale at Regency sinks to a new low…

    • Dave In Ajax

very good observation, thought of that myself, kudos to you

      • Dave In Ajax

especially when the owner shows up in his new ferrari next week

            • aquaclara

              And zing!

    • And $cientology PR is at the bottom of their tone scale.

  • M from Toronto

Oh in the name of Mithras.
I wish I had a big building that I owned (obvs it would be best in the area the billboard was going up in-you know what I meant) and I’d just bloody well hire some artists to paint it on the side of it. Hell I’ll put it on a tee shirt, aside from sending Jenna (The Epitome of Elegance) Elfman to shriek at me, it’s not like they can stop that.

  • TheHoleDoesNotExist

In case Mr Hole wakes up and decides to read the late late Bunker post, I totally forgot to give him props for spending every spare minute during work week to work on Billboard Song, and even taking some personal time off work to finish, wolfing down food as it was delivered at the door, and cutting down on sleep for a few days.

His bosses and supervisors at his day job loved the song, by the way. Can you imagine – an organization that supports and encourages humanitarian and community causes and their employees’ passions?! They also give employees a couple of paid days off to do volunteer work for charities of their choice. They think Mr Hole is an amazing asset. So do I. Thanks, hon.

    • Baby

Thanks Mr. Hole.. You are one in a million 47 x..

      • TheHoleDoesNotExist

I’m gonna need a lot of pies, Baby. hint hint. I cook. I don’t bake.

      • TheHoleDoesNotExist

True fun facts: When I asked him at 3 am if he could just try one more take on the piano, he turned around, looked at me with a weird facial expression I had yet to ever see, and I thought I’d seen them all, and said in some kind of gutteral low voice:

“You DO remember I was never in the Sea Org, right?!”

          • TheHoleDoesNotExist

It’s just a formula hook song, and didn’t have time/money to fix it in the mix in pro studio. Labor of love and as an artist yourself, I know you understand. I’m still always astounded at the group efforts, talents and contributions that everyone brings and lays at the steps of the porch of infinity around here. Impressive!

Just a formula hook song?” Don’t sell yourself short. (Although, since you are a pro, I do know where you are coming from.)

We have a family friend who is a fairly prominent name in the “middle tier” of the music industry. A few years ago, at a party, someone made a disparaging comment about pop novelty songs, assuming he would agree. Instead, he rather gravely pointed out that his first hit, the one that got his foot in the door, was a little novelty tune that had long since disappeared without a trace.

He went on to say that novelty songs could be quickly produced, sell a million copies, and then vanish. And where was the downside?

Hey Babs, For a slight donation to the billboard fund, we could rename your footbullet mess. Instead of Streisand, how does the Miscavige effect sound?

  • The Revolution

Crazy idea, but maybe via internet or word of mouth try to talk to some graffiti artists or gangsters? They relate to this cause, think of it this way

Even PRISONERS, even people on death row, are able to contact their family, partners, and lawyers. Sure not everyday, but more often than anyone in the hole or RPF. Splitting up families is something that will piss off any real G.

Imagine the look on COB when an entire wall of his is spray painted with your message. Imagine when even the lowest of the low, common criminals, call out Scientology on its TRUE crimes that go unpunished.

Hell, now I’m daydreaming of the kind of ass kicking Dave would get from the average guy trying to get by and survive on the streets…little woman beating child abusing munchkin Miscavige getting manhandled by a street brawler who just got out of the pen..it’d be a beautiful sight.

    • Baby

Revolution.. Tony is very adamant about abuse of any kind being promoted. He has had his blog taken to court before when some comments were a little over the top..

  • Espantapajaro

Crazy thought from a nobody, why in this world would you tell about what you are going to do knowing their history and shenanigans. I say keep your mouth and your intentions hidden and surprise them.. seems to me that all the talk here gives them a heads up.

    • TheHoleDoesNotExist

Great idea – as long as you don’t need a GoFundMe or have a fairy godmother to just, you know, make it all happen. But thanks for playing.

      • Espantapajaro

Im sorry im new at this, but extremely fascinated by this entity and what it has been able and currently getting away with.

        • TheHoleDoesNotExist

It’s complicated. Welcome to the rabbit hole.

What are we getting away with?

          • Robert Eckert

Espa means the Scientology entity gets away with so much

            • Baby

Thanks Robert.. I totally misread it.. Ooops

          • Espantapajaro

            Too much already..

          • Espantapajaro

I got scared there for a second, when i wrote entity i really meant the most ethical beings on this planet.

        • Baby

Welcome Espa.. We’re all pooped.. a lot going on around here lately.. we always have room for more..

        • Juicer77

          Welcome! It’s horrifying, isn’t it?

        • chukicita

          ‘S ok. Nobody’s born knowing.

While surprises can be fun, it is demonstrably informative to watch the orchestrated and policy-driven response to a billboard with a very benign message. Wogs don’t have a reason to hide, but Scn, Inc. sure has a lot to keep covered up.

BTW, it’s worse than you think.

    • OOkpik

      Welcome, Espantapajaro.

      Phil wrote:
“I know some have wondered about announcing this billboard ahead of time.
One reason was to raise money as we couldn’t afford it ourselves. Once
we had the money I didn’t think it right to just go silent. If someone
donates money to a cause and then hears nothing it just doesn’t look
good in my mind. Also, I wanted this to have a big impact and putting
the word out could bring more press and bigger crowd to the event. And
one last thing, we don’t want to be silent. Scientology has tried to
make us silent for too long. We want to shout from the rooftops. And if
they shut us down we will shout louder. At some point the kids might
      hear us.”

Since this is his campaign, that’s really all we have to know and respect. Lets get behind him and support this worthy project. ๐Ÿ™‚

      Welcome Espantapajaro

oh no… Regency. ๐Ÿ™ I was afraid this would happen. If they got to Bob Minton, who else has a chance?

  • Good luck to Phil and Willie.

And we trust the IRS is proud of the ecclesiastical way the criminal organisation known as the “church” of $cientology is spending the moneys of US tax payers.

  • Kay

Sigh…..I’m not surprised that this happened, unfortunately. However, in the long run, the more Scientology does this, the more negative attention they are drawing to themselves, I agree with Tony on that. So, it may look like they are still very accomplished in the business of being effective at intimidation and other means they utilize to get their way, but eventually, this will just look like bullying. It also will look like a continued obnoxious attempt to suppress free speech. They may have won a couple of small battles, but not the war. They are just well-funded thugs, and in many ways, they are incredibly stupid. As Baby would say, Pfffftttt !!

    • OOkpik

Every time they do something stupid like this, the news gets out, and with it the message that the Scientology practice of disconnection is ripping families apart, and sending a message of hope to loved ones. Whichever way you cut it, it’s a lose-lose for Scientology. Their psychopathic stump of a dictator is too narcissistic to see past the end of his nose.

      Hahahaha…go Phil and Willie.

  • danny torrance

I’m with Marc Headley on this. one. Don’t say a word next time until the billboard is up. I thought it was a little naรฏve to announce it so soon last time bearing in mind Scientology’s reputation and what they did last time, although they probably would have found out who it was eventually anyway I suppose.

    • There can’t be that many billboard companies in the area, and the CofS will now be monitoring all of them.

This so illustrates the vulnerability of traditional mass media to vexatious litigation. There is no concievable case in law, but there does not have to be. All the CofS have to do is to theaten a company with the cost of defending pointless litigation.

The same goes for just about any advertising that you can afford.

It’s tragic because the billboard was such a good idea, being visible to the people you are trying to reach.

Go dark, keep trying. At the very least, this will be another distaction to divert their dwindling organisational resources.

      • Juicer77

They may rejoice today, but people are still leaving (and getting warned against) the Co$ at an incredible rate. Nothing changes that. Go ahead and dance, little Davey. You’ll pay the piper one day.

Have an ethical concern for truth and justice

      • Juicer77

Well, yes, but realize that Doing The Right Thing could mean the company goes into bankruptcy if it gets tied up in court with the Co$. The company has to consider its employees’ future as well. They could lose their jobs. Sad but true.

  • Juicer77

I have finished the stencil design and can complete them within a few days. Following artwork that was posted here. (f5) If anyone wants one I’m happy to send them out for free. They will be approx. 4″ x 6″ wide in a flexible material that can be used on flat or curved surfaces. Anyone have recommendations on what paint to use?

    • OOkpik

      Very cool!
The kind of paint you use would probably depend on what you’d be using it for.
My first thought would be a tube of artists acrylics. It comes in every colour, is washable when wet, but durable when set, fits in a purse or pocket, and can be applied with a brush, sponge, or even a finger. It can be thinned with water if you wish and wiped off the stencil with a damp cloth if you’re quick. It dries fairly fast and can be blended or layered. What’s not to like?!

      • Baby

        Great idea wise Owl.

      • Juicer77

Good idea. For stenciling you want something fairly thick so it doesn’t smoosh together.

      • chukicita

        I highly recommend Chalk spray.

You can get it through Dick Blick or most any art supply store.

    • Baby

Juice.. You could have it printed in color.. that way you wouldn’t have to mess with painting.. and the individual could put it on cardboard etc..

I would be willing to pay.. Or you know what.. You could have the finished product and we could print it out ourselves.. How about that? ( You are beyond sweet..)

      • Juicer77

I can send the file, but it’s for a specific machine and most computers won’t be able to read the file.

    • Baby

The stencil turned out really nice Juice.. I will take one when you get organized.. whatever you decide to do..but I will pay you..

PS. I am fuming!!! I’m now even more determined to make another donation to the project. Even if it’s not a billboard..

      • Juicer77

Tony posted a really good comment a few hours ago. This is significant because it means the Co$ is really, really scared of this project, and the bad publicity/footbullets are already flying. It’s extremely frustrating in a way, but NOT good for the Co$ in the long run. Heh heh heh. The more fuss that gets kicked up, the more attention is drawn to the REALITY of disconnection.

I love the billboard truck idea. With the money you save on renting the billboard space you could almost buy the truck. Then you could drive by orgs at mealtimes….all of them. You could park in front of ASI one day, CC the next. Then spend an hour or three cruising Hollywood Blvd, then Sunset, cruise out to Santa Monica, spend the afternoon at the beach with the billboard in a conspicuous place. You could show up at all events. You could really have a blast with this. Lots of exes and critics have driver’s licenses. And you would have a major impact all across LA.

    • madge filpot

I love the roving truck idea. The would be billboard sign adhered to a truck.. driving around the big blue etc.. on random days at random hours. Great idea.

  • Douglas D. Douglas

    Just my two cents.

I don’t think it matters how much any of this has been shared. I do not believe that there is any reason to believe that any of this could be kept secret. After the crowd funding was announced, OSA was on the task, and with their resources here in LA I believe they would have sniffed out anything that was being planned with any outdoor media entity. These people have little else to do these days (it’s not like they are keeping tabs on millions of members!), so I really, truly do not believe for a moment that the manner in which this has unfolded is due to information shared here.

If anything, that this has all been on the public record is, to me, a plus. It is Scientology that skulks about in the shadows, pulling sneaky tricks and then crowing about their ethics. We are above that.

  • Douglas D. Douglas

I also did not want to be a Debbie Downer, but knowing what I know about LA billboard companies (Google “nest of vipers”), I was set for heartache. Scientology’s challenged ethics mesh very neatly with the people who are making millions and millions of dollars in the nefarious underworld that is outdoor advertising in Los Angeles.

  • Douglas D. Douglas

And, on a more positive note, isn’t it worthwhile to have discovered a very real Achilles heal in the ever-shrinking world of Scientology? They are so determined to keep this message away from anyone. The Tech seems awfully weak when a single billboard on one of the busiest streets in the world causes such consternation.

    Discuss.

    • Juicer77

      They’re terrified. It’s amazing!

      • Douglas D. Douglas

        When the squirrels are screaming…

    • MostEthicalPimp

It’s not like the church doesn’t have the money to run a counter campaign. but what would they say that wouldn’t confuse there members and case re-connection.

      • Baby

DON’T CALL …WE’LL DO IT FOR YOU!

    • Intergalactic Walrus

Can you imagine your neighborhood church doing something like this? Running around buying up billboards? Or even wanting to waste any money on billboard advertising at all? Of coarse not, legitimate churches don’t do this kinda crap. The CO$ inhabits a world of lunacy all their own. As the CO$ cookie crumbles, the nuts are spread out on the table for the whole world to see. They are a pathetic, creepy joke.

      • MostEthicalPimp

There was a church that advertised on a billboard near it’s church. But I think it was because the location was non-obvious. Being behind three big stores.

        • Intergalactic Walrus

Yeah, even the signs on CO$ buildings in Hollywood have to be ludicrously ostentatious. They love to make make a spectacle of themselves, that’s for sure. It’s all part of the scam.

    • JOE BLOW

      That is a great point.

    • OOkpik

As with Going Clear, their ridiculous antics will only serve to make the Jones’ message more broadly known. COB is just being a petty little bitch!

  • MostEthicalPimp

The only thing I can see is that Scientology could do is use it’s celebs to threaten to blacklist Regency’s billboards for their future movie releases. I don’t see what other card Scientology has?? It could threaten legal action but actually do so would bring more attention to the billboard. Same for protests.

    • Juicer77

The companies cannot afford to get tied up in costly litigation, it could mean bankruptcy and job loss for all their employees. Easier to just fold early and walk away.

    • chukicita

They don’t have a card, but they have a deck full of litigation threats – whether they are valid or not doesn’t matter, the goal will be not to win but to harass. I feel badly for Regency because I think at first they wanted to do the right thing, but as always Scn is worse than you think.

Okay, this is straight up bullshit. I am furious. Keep on fighting, Phil & Willie. Maybe you’ll find a business partner with integrity. Arrrggghhhh!!!!!

Holly.. Perfect picture to reflect the mood… BUT it will be for our benefit.. It only makes them look idiotic.

Suggestion if you’ve got a spare minute or two:

Head over to Google, type in “scientology b” (without the quotes).
Continue typing slowly, one letter at a time, “illboard“.
Watch the autocomplete suggestions that are popping up after each keystroke.
As soon as “scientology billboard” appears among the suggestions (F5), select it.

On the Google results page, click through to Page Six, Telegraph, Inquisitr, RawStory, and Underground Bunker articles (you may want to open them each in a new browser tab, so you don’t have to return to the Google results every time).

  • Markthehungarian

My advice.. Find a building with a wall and paint the sign on. With permission of course.

      • It’s Me!

Like 3-D hologram or projection mapping? http://www.techniquemirage.com/

I also see something called Mobile projection advertising ”

Specially designed Mobile Projection Vehicles (MPV) cruise the city
streets projecting images cascading from building to building. The
images, up to 200ft in size, are extremely eye catching as they move
across building surfaces. The MPV projection units may remain
stationary, targeting select demographics, at key locations throughout
        the city”

        • chukicita

          YES. Exactly like that!

        • chukicita

Yes, exactly like that – but you don’t need to buy an MPV, just rent one / commission a light artist.

  • Royce Harlow

Wow. It is intresting too experience how much scientology is terrified of one litte billboard.

    • salin

Consider that they have many billboards up – and obviously those billboards don’t do much in regards to getting new people to come to them.

Yet one single billboard has probably already cost them more $$ than was raised for this single billboard (lawyers fees, bribes of future billboard rentals etc) because they fear the cost of … ?… a few phone calls made? Bad PR (Can’t be that – because they are generating worse PR and more negative attention), Makes me think that a public conversation about Disconnection really scares them.

      Very interesting, indeed.

    • PickAnotherID

That’s “Homo Novis” for you. Scared to death of communications between anyone and themselves.

  • Royce Harlow

I’m in favor of an idea that one of the Bunkerites had (can’t remember his/her name though) to have a large trailer with the billboard pic on both sides, driving round and round the neighborhood.

    • Linae Anderson

I second this option. Drive the trailer round and round, and then park it on the street periodically – right at the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Sycamore. It would serve little fucker right if you had multiple trucks, trailers, and buses out there, all with the same message.

      • Royce Harlow

You’d drive one day at a time. Never 2 days in a row. Nobody would be informed which day they’ll drive so it is always an element of surprise there and more difficult to prevent. If the trailer is owned by a Bunkerite, privately by some guy somebody knows or some small company that is maybe connected to somebody in the bunker it is more likely that we can keep it a secret and not be intimidated.

        • It’s Me!

          I’d volunteer for that! <3

    • Eivol Ekdal

      …with free toilet paper.

    • ReallyMGM

I’ll be tweeting the billboard image daily under hashtags: #CallMe #CallHome #DisconnectionSUX #Scientology
I don’t have Instagram yet, but it will go up there, too.
There is more than one way to get a message out.

      • Baby

        Yep..good kitteh..

        • ReallyMGM

OT: Appears I’ll have time to do it. It appears I tore or ruptured a tendon in my knee last night doing something stupid (again…I do my own stunts). Seeing ortho specialist ASAP.

          • Baby

Oh honey.. yes.. go to specialist.. I’m sorry.. OUCH.. I fractured my knee cap years ago.. It hurt so bad.. That has got to hurt.. xo

ooh OUCH !! I am copying the serious posts now, apologies to Baby. Take care and get a stunt man.

            • ReallyMGM

Don’t attempt pirouettes onto the bed while holding a phone. Partial tear to the calf muscle where it attaches to the knee, and it is an OUCH! Nothing they can do but watch it for two weeks and see if it repairs on its own. I am really a klutz! (It should be ok, really)

  • NOLAGirl (Stephanie)

I sure hope something happens soon that kicks the Tiny Terror in his little marble sack because holy fuck this past week has been: “Bummer…..Party of 10…Your table is ready.”

Keep kicking ass Phil & Willie. I’ve got the confetti ready for some good news. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • daisy

So sorry for your bad week. I will serve you ,for a change.

    • PickAnotherID

He’s just taken a major kick from the fact no matter how hard he try’s to suppress this, we haven’t given up, and he hasn’t been able to “Shudder them into silence”. The pain just hasn’t reached whatever passes for his brain yet.

      • NOLAGirl (Stephanie)

A CAT scan on him would be interesting….if you could scan what’s left of that rotted nub, oh wait, nevermind…I’m thinking of his heart. CAT scan of his brain would probably reveal a drunk hamster on a wheel screaming obscenities.

Ah well, I hear that Federal prisons have clean psych wards so he’s got that to look forward to. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • madame duran

    WHAT?? CANCELLED?? NOOOOOO!!!!

    • NOLAGirl (Stephanie)

Ad an “AGAIN!!” to that sentence and it’s my sentiments exactly. Punks!!

    • PickAnotherID

I prefer to think of it as delayed, not cancelled.

      • madame duran

        Good perspective.

      • Wogalistic

One thing I think that is almost funny out of all this is to imagine how much money it probably cost the Cherch to be able to cancel that billboard. Can you imagine how panicked they were? I would rather have the billboard, to be sure, but to imagine it, is quite humorous. I wonder what other ways there are to get the Cherch to blow large sums of money.

It’s like when you miscavage speaking, you see a small, incompetent little man acting big, sure he’s rich, but he is and will always be a small, incompetent little man trying to protect his ever shrinking little empire.

  • Graham

Well one way to look at it is that this has already generated a huge amount of publicity and not a single penny has yet been spent on billboards. I hope Phil invites the press to a non-unveiling party on the due day to give even more publicity to this injustice. Thanks to Scientology’s footbullet tech this project is getting far more publicity per dollar than we could ever have hoped for.

    • PickAnotherID

      Exactly!

    • myrklix

Curious — huge amount of publicity here at the Bunker or elsewhere?

      • salin

Got picked up a number of well read places. Check out google news for Scientology Billboard.

      • PickAnotherID

Pagesix, Telegraph (UK), Inquisitr, Rawstory, Patheos, Reddit, Digital Signage Pulse, Breaking News Point, and Betanews all picked up the stories.

    • madge filpot

What a great idea Graham. “Yes people of the press”.. this is where it WAS going up.. before SCN’s scare tactics caved Regency.

    • chukicita

      OoO! A non-unveiling! I like it!

    • Phil McKraken

I hate to be a naysayer to your silver lining, but …

The intended target for the billboard’s message has not been reached at all with the message it would convey to them. The paltry publicity of being bandied about in this blog has zero impact on the disconnected within Scientology.

Score another round to DM, but get up to fight another day.

      • Graham

Paltry publicity? Pagesix, Telegraph (UK), Inquisitr, Rawstory, Patheos, Reddit, Digital Signage Pulse, Breaking News Point, and Betanews. I wouldn’t call that paltry.

        • Phil McKraken

I hope I’m wrong. I saw Tony’s post about how these actions will generate more publicity than the actual billboard ever would have. Color me skeptical. An actual billboard over the streets of Los Angeles, one with such an intriguing message, is something that the public mind can sink its teeth into. The story of how someone is repeatedly denied the right to buy billboard space, through the machinations of a publicity-averse evil organization, seems to me like a much less impactful story. It’s too nuanced.

  • madge filpot

I’m thinking it would be VERY smart to keep our mouths shut about whatever is the next billboard company to have the guts to work with Phil, when it will go up and where it will go up. Not one word. If that means no fanfare on the day of the unveiling so to speak.. so be it. A small price to pay considering the alternative. Of course DM may have already contacted all the other billboard companies. Hope not.

  • Volunteer SP

Co$ is terrified of massive publicity regarding is Disconnection Policy. So we have to make that happen by any means necessary. If we are determined to make it happen we cannot and will not be stopped. If necessary, there are other ways to communicate other than via billboards.

For one, this story as concerns Co$ suppression of the billboard can grow legs.

  • Tony Ortega

    NEW POST IS UP

    • Sherbet

And, boy, do we need it.

  • xenuYESxenu

of course. Scientology saw it here both times. Both times ๐Ÿ˜‰ And they had ample time to spew money and hate.

    • PickAnotherID

Resulting in more publicity about their toxic ‘disconnection’ policy than the billboard by itself would ever have generated if they had just ignored it. $cientology is it’s own worst enemy.

      • Draco

Yes – but we need those that are still IN to see it.

  • Meepthorp

I hate to say this but I had a feeling this would happen. The evil power of Sauron to bend someone’s will is too strong for most folks. Where’s Sam and Frodo when you need them?

    • ze moo

Aragorn would be much more handy.

  • Tardy1967

Why on earth pay for a billboard when for not much more you could buy a white transit van cover it in the poster and have local activists drive it up and down the streets in the area you had intended to put the advert up in the first place. Scientology could not stop you buying a van, and once you have the signs made up and on the van its just a ยฃ10 or so a year donation by a few hundred bunkerites to pay the insurance and petrol costs. There must be local volunteers who will take turns driving round for an hour at a time when Scientology has things happening.

    • PickAnotherID

There’s a major difference in the visual impact of a giant billboard planted within site of the target audience, and a van driving around the street. Otherwise billboard companies would have gone out of business long ago.

      • PJK

You could park the van in a suitable parking space and fill up the meter every now and then. Just doing that wouldn’t cost too much and they would be powerless to do anything against this as long as you keep the parking meter filled. Just add some cameras or watchers to keep track of people that try to vandalize the van and you have a cheap billboard replacement.

And since it’s a van you could move it around to parking spots at different $camontology sites to get better coverage for the message.

    • chukicita

Perhaps it’s different where you live, but here it would be an insurance nightmare.

  • Lighthouse

What about putting it on buses? Or on top of a car that is driven around the area at appropriate times? Or a huge mural somewhere appropriate? I suppose all this is being thought of already.

    • Observer

Someone (DDD maybe?) posted that the media outlets who own the billboards in LA also control bus advertising.

      • Douglas D. Douglas

‘Twasn’t me. I do not know if this is true or not.

  • Gosling

Even if they “win” they lose as yet more people are exposed to the devious and underhanded organisation that is scientology. They really are a bunch of evil f**ks.

  • gtsix

Well.. this sucks. And it’s not even Friday yet.

    Happy Humpday anyway.

  • DexterSka

Nobody wants to take this scum on. It sounds good until you realize that they just don’t ever quit.

  • Dee Findlay-DeElizabethan

Dang, I almost missed this report except for Discus sending me a message of conversation with Tony’s comment. I was away from the computer half a day and look what happens!
I love most all the comments and videos but certainly haven’t read everyone. Thanks fellow Bunkers and Tony. We will continue on…..

  • I knew no billboard company in Hollywood would ever go along with this ๐Ÿ™

  • Cymboli

Honestly, and I say this with all deference and respect, it was a mistake to disclose the billboard intention publically. An effective strategy will always be one that forces your opponent into a defensive posture. Scientology was given forewarning of the billboard and now they will take whatever action they can to make sure it doesn’t happen. They may not have proceeded to contact every billboard company in the area after the first attempt but now that two have taken place, you can be certain that a billboard is highly unlikely. An aggressive opponent will always use knowledge to their advantage. We pretty much handed them a battle strategy prior to war.

    • BosonStark

Yeah, it was a Catch 22 though. Phil needed to draw attention to it in order to raise money for it. It may have gone up for a few days if it hadn’t been mentioned where it was going to be, but Scientology still would have gotten to them. They would leverage their billion dollar power and influence against Phil’s $10,000 power.

    • chukicita

I don’t agree. Because 1) there is no reason to hide a message of love, and 2) it provided another opportunity to watch and document realtime, policy-driven cult response to the message advocating family connection.

      It’s a footbullet fiesta.

    • Betty

Yes and we keep doing it over and over for years.

  • Steve Aldrich

Just tried to call Regency at the number found here: http://www.regencyoutdoor.com
    No such number.
How do we contact the real Regency? Did $CN already put up a fake Regency website?

    • Steve Aldrich

Never mind. Regency is as corrupt as $CN itself. No hope through them.

  • CSparks

Has anyone thought of starting a petition on Change.org, to appeal to the outdoor advertising community’s sense of fair play? Are there any areas in town where it can be painted as an advertisement, or even as part of a mural, on the side of a building? Is there a way to get local news to delve into what is surely a case of intimidation and undue influence? Just wondering. This is maddening!

  • sizzle8

Where’s Anonymous when you need them?

    • MaxSpaceman

it would help most if they owned a Billboard Company

  • Sejanus

    Disgraceful.
Companies knuckling under to a stinkin’ cult of less than 40,000 members.

  • MaxSpaceman

On the one hand, you have nice people, who want to put up a meaningful billboard.

On the other hand, you have a $4 billion multi-national corporation nick-named Scientology, which will make any kind of deal necessary to get the billboard company to do its bidding.

Game over. 2 down. Are there any other Billboard Companies out there, putting up stuff in Hollywood ?

  • Skeptic

If the ad truck idea doesn’t work, what about a small army, frequently deployed, wearing sandwich signs (which one rarely sees anymore) on the *public* areas at appropriate times in front of the various $cientology buildings. Something like this. They would be unavoidable, and you know the security would be scrambling to block them. Hence a small army. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Bob

It is unfortunate that the CofS cult can intimidate or buy practically anyone it wants. Maybe Anonymous will take notice and do what they do so well, tear the CofS another anal aperture.

    • MaxSpaceman

not likely over the billboard issue, no

  • Bernie

So disappointing Phil. My hubby had a suggestion that, if not already done, there be a cancellation clause in the contract with the bilboard company that pays a stiff penalty if they cancel for any reason once the contract is accepted.

    • OOkpik

Great idea, Bernie. I think Mr. Bernie is onto something. <3<3

      • ze moo

The advertising company will never accept any contract except their own boilerplate. That does suck….

      • Bernie

        He should start posting!

I am so sorry to hear about the billboard companies caving in, but I hope what Tony says about it getting more and more press and media attention just keeps going.

A few days ago I mentioned the billboard to some never-been-ins that I’d just met, and they were excited! They thought it was brilliant, and were talking about how awful it was just to have kids they couldn’t see often in a divorce, and how much worse this is and how glad they were to see the families of those scientology had split up brought to the forefront and doing something about it and fighting back.

Xenu Damn…..If there is a next time, don’t talk about it in advance.

    • Elegant Mess

I almost said something when they announced the second billboard, but thought it was locked down. The next one should definitely be, “Hush-hush and on the QT.”.

Ooh, this gets my heckles up…

Is Brian Kennedy related to the recently deceased actor George Kennedy? They do look similar.

Money talks, and Just Us walks ….. Sad really.

  • I was so swamped yesterday I actually missed this. Sigh.

I am so sorry to hear of this awful setback. …..

Hopefully Phil uses this as a learning experience. I know its easy to get excited and tell the world about the billboard before it happens but this needs to be played as a longer game. How much more sensational would the headlines have been, and how much more media exposure would it have gotten if the billboard was already up and then Scientology forced its takedown. Hopefully we still get to find out. Its not often you get a third chance, let alone a second chance.

Tony O, you’ve been covering Scientology for a long time now. I know that Phil gave you permission to publish the stories about the billboard but maybe you should have used some judgement and councelled Phil to hold off on the announcement. Surely everyone now knows how Scientology does things, this was inevitable, there was never any need to announce the billboard until it was on show.

Please scroll down and read Tony’s comments.

Then, read tonight’s Page Six article.

      You’re welcome.

I just read Tony’s comment and your link. I still stand by my comment. People are visual. From the media’s perspective a picture tells a thousand words. I think there would have been much more exposure if the billboard was up first. The media come out and take pictures at release, then the media takes more pictures when the signage comes down due to Scientology. A ‘before and after’, if you will. I think that would generate much more exposure. Instead here we are with a couple articles from NY Times and The Daily Telegraph. They have the thousand words but no picture.

I’m hoping this is the long game and Phil and Tony are giving Scientology false sense of security. I hope Phil’s had a third company lined up all this time just to build the tension making it seem like all hope is lost and then BAM! have a billboard put up.

  • SP1

If he tries this or something like this again he should not say anything until it is up.

With Phil Jones’ kind permission, I’ve worked these up on Zazzle. They’re four and change a piece for single ones (if someone can find a better deal let me know), and I’ve made up versions where you can insert your loved one’s pic, or ones with the heart plain.

If folks like, I’ll work up T-shirts, too.

Any royalties I get from these will go straight to the Billboard fund. Phil’s not giving up and neither are we, right?

    Weenies.

  • brichardsson

Next time don’t announce the plans until they actually happen. This can’t be surprising to anyone, can it?

  • littlefish

I wonder what the cost would be to physically BUILD a billboard. I’m assuming the land for the post and the materials? I’d pitch in for a Sid/Willie owned billboard that they could do with what they wished.

  • Dee

I was just wondering how long the church will be willing to keep booking these billboards to silence one billboard for one month. Why not revisit all the companies again at the end of each month after they have their money and see what they say then we will see if they have been pressed into a long term agreement to not accept this one client as they cant keep saying they are fully book forever.

This is why I cannot take following scientology (except for the occasional peek under my don’t want to know covers). Even when I peek just a little I get slammed with disappointment and a side dish of complete and painful disgust with scientology’s practice of grand deceit. I DO NOT KNOW how you all do it! But I am glad you do.
