That eventually led to a landmark appeals court decision in January defeating Scientology’s “religious arbitration” strategy, which had derailed the lawsuit. Masterson’s motion to have the charges against him thrown out was denied by Judge Ronald Coen. The parties then moved down the hall to the trial court of Judge Charlaine Olmedo, who quashed a new set of duplicative subpoenas by Masterson’s new attorney, Shawn Holley. In 2019, Scientology issued one of its typically boastful press releases, this time about its private cruise ship, the Freewinds.
