It’s a Cinderella story in the NCAA Men’s Basketball national championship tournament as Florida Gulf Coast University has become the first 15-seed to make it to the Sweet Sixteen.
In our own tournament, SMERSH Madness, we’ve seen plenty of upsets and tight showdowns as one winner will emerge who will represent the Church of Scientology’s biggest current nemesis. And now we begin to determine regional bracket champs who will compete in the Final Four. We’ve been enjoying the comments readers have left as they described how they voted and why. We know some of the matchups have been very tough, and they’re only going to get tougher.
So let’s see who has reached the bracket finals…
So let’s continue the Madness today with our first regional final! For the championship of the Apollo Bracket, here’s your choice…
Debbie Cook’s infamous New Year’s Eve e-mail started off 2012 with a temblor that is still shaking up the Church of Scientology. Nearly every person now leaving the church credits her lengthy indictment of Scientology leader David Miscavige with helping them see the light. (Previously: Debbie defeated John Sweeney in the first round and L. Ron Hubbard in the sweet sixteen.)
Tom Tobin and Joe Childs of the Tampa Bay Times are the deans of Scientology journalism. Their 2009 series that exposed violence at Scientology’s International Base, and their 2011 project on the money side of Scientology provided the bedrock material that most of the rest of us work from. Consummate professionals, these two quiet guys go about their work with little fanfare and never seek the spotlight. We shudder to think what their next blockbuster takeout will uncover. (Previously: Tobin & Childs got past Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder in the first round and Nancy Many in the sweet sixteen.)
