Jehovah’s Witnesses learn that scaring children in Sweden comes with a price

[From the Metro investigation]

What an interesting and odd story coming out of Sweden today. We were alerted to it by a Lloyd Evans tweet, and then spent part of the morning reading translations of articles from the Swedish version of Metro, the free daily newspaper.

Jehovah’s Witnesses leader encountered buying a haul of Scotch on a Sunday morning

Lloyd Evans revealed a surprising bit of video that came in from a tipster who had filmed a Jehovah’s Witnesses governing body member, Tony Morris, shopping for Macallan Scotch at a liquor store at 11 am on a Sunday morning in Ramsey, New Jersey.

Lloyd explains just how rare it is to run into a governing member in the wild at all, but to see him talking about various brands of whiskey and walking away with hundreds of dollars of booze was really something.

Jehovah’s Witnesses in Scientology’s ‘Mecca’: Is this the Armageddon we were promised?

We want to thank regular reader Jeb Burton for taking the photo you see here during his adventures yesterday in downtown Clearwater. He snapped this outside the infamous “Scientology Starbucks” at the corner of Fort Harrison Boulevard and Cleveland Street, the crossroads at the very center of Scientology’s “spiritual Mecca,” the Flag Land Base in Clearwater, Florida.

If Jehovah’s Witnesses only benefit their own believers, why are they subsidized as a charity?

Lloyd Evans has a really interesting new piece today at the website of Britain’s National Secular Society. And while the tax exempt or charity status of churches in the UK and the US are not exactly the same, we think our American readers can benefit from reading some of the questions Lloyd raises in this really well done article.

Jehovah’s Witnesses magazine settles climate change question we raised recently

Hey, this seems kind of fortuitous. Last week, we asked Lloyd Evans how Jehovah’s Witnesses, an end-of-the-world group, thought about actual global challenges presented by climate change.

Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Internet in 2019: Spookily similar to Scientology in 1994

[Scientology heavy Helena Kobrin and Watchtower mercenary Philip Brumley]

We’re still playing catch-up here at our new Jehovah’s Witnesses blog, and yes, we keep running across parallels to what we’ve seen over at our Scientology watch.

‘John Redwood’ on today’s Atlantic blockbuster about Jehovah’s Witnesses and child abuse

[Mark and Kimmy O’Donnell]

Mark O’Donnell, also known as ‘John Redwood’ to the ex-JW community, was featured in an amazing Atlantic piece that went live today, written by Douglas Quenqua. Mark’s journey leaving JWs and then his wife Kimmy eventually joining him forms the backdrop of a stunning article about how the Watchtower is sitting on a database of between 18,000 and 23,000 child molesters that the organization began compiling in detail starting in 1997.

Michelle Wallis: How I took back the power denied me by JW and really lived my life

[Michelle Wallis and her husband Craig]

We spotted this first-person testament over at Facebook and asked its writer, Michelle Wallis, if she’d allow us to share it here at the Bunker. What a remarkable story of family, loss, and personal strength. It’s long, but we think it’s worth your while.
