The other day, the other day, not too long ago, I was outside taking a look at the dawn and it was a great relief. The Van Allen belt is nice and warm and you can sit in the Van Allen belt amongst the radiation that’s supposed to be so harmful. It’s nice that it’s there. It holds in the warm air, you know, and you can put out your beams and warm your hands. And rain clouds are absolutely beautiful there. They’re almost as good as a drink of Coca-Cola. And you can get into the ice crystals of a rain cloud and it’s very nice. It’s very nice. It’s cooling, refreshing, you know, like taking a cold shower on a hot summer day. And all of a sudden you’re not stricken by these fantastic temperature reactions. See, you’re in a body, you see, you get a temperature difference of ten degrees up or ten degrees down and you’re kind of miserable, you know? “E=mc2 is a flawed idea. Yes, it’s true that matter is really just solidified energy. But what’s been left out is the thetan. The thetan, who has no location in time and space, adds and subtracts energy and mass at will to the Universe as he sees fit. If, as an OT, I see a bus about to careen into a bunch of school kids and I decide to change the trajectory of the bus to spare the lives of these children, where does the energy to do that come from? Me! I create it from ‘whole cloth’ and add it to this universe.”

1997: Television show 60 Minutes aired a piece on the demise of the Cult Awareness Network due to Scientology this week. James Cherry provided a transcript. Some excerpts: LESLEY STAHL: There was a time, if you were worried about your son or daughter being in a cult, you could get help from a small, nonprofit organization called the Cult Awareness Network, or CAN, for twenty years the nation’s best-known resource for information and advice about groups it considered dangerous. Among them was Scientology, a church not known for turning the other cheek. And while Scientology did attack its enemies in the past, Church officials say they don’t do that any more. But recently, the Cult Awareness Network was forced into bankruptcy, and its leaders blame the Church of Scientology. MOXON: I don’t know if she’s a topless dancer or not. STAHL: Did you tell our producer that you didn’t believe that was true? MOXON: I told your producer that I thought, looking at Cynthia Kisser, it seemed improbable that she could have been a topless dancer because of the way she looks. STAHL: Yet despite his own view and the evidence from Investigator Shomers, Moxon, also a minister in the Church, persisted in bringing it up. MOXON: I mean, we’ve got a declaration already indicating that she had been a topless dancer. STAHL: I can’t believe you’re continuing to talk about her being a topless dancer! STAHL: Were you a topless dancer? KISSER: No, and later the person that they claimed told them that retracted it…issued a retraction saying that it wasn’t true. KISSER: I got hit with twelve suits in one week! I would open the door, a process server would give me a suit. They were suing us all over the country, sometimes simultaneously. STAHL: In all, CAN was hit with more than fifty lawsuits. Even though most of the suits were eventually dropped or won by CAN, she says the cost of defending them, nearly two million dollars, drove CAN to the brink of bankruptcy. JENTZSCH: I would say that the individuals who were involved definitely wanted to do something about CAN. What are you going to do when they’re trying to destroy you? Look, if you’re a Jew, no Jew is going to cry about the fact that the Nazi party is gone. If you’re an African American, no one is going to cry that the KKK is gone. I’m not crying because CAN is gone, OK? They were a vicious group — STAHL: My question is, would you concede that at least part of what happened with those lawsuits was a deliberate attempt to harass and intimidate them into silence? JENTZSCH: No, absolutely not — STAHL: Well, you’re not going to make us believe that there were these thirty or fifty lawsuits that all sprang up, you know, just… serendipitously. MOXON: They didn’t spring up serendipitously. A number of Scientologists came to our firm and said, ‘I’m being discriminated against by CAN.’ We have these complaints in the computer. We deny the Church’s accusation that we have a conflict of interest in this story, because producer Richard Bonin has an aunt who’s a lawyer involved in litigation against the Church. Though that’s true, our producer’s aunt Leta had nothing to do with our story.”

Full Court Press: What we’re watching at the Underground Bunker

Criminal prosecutions:
— Danny Masterson charged for raping three women: Found guilty on two counts on May 31, remanded to custody. Sentenced to 30 years to life on Sep 7, 2023. Appeal now fully briefed, waiting for 2nd Appellate District court to set a hearing date. Masterson has also submitted a habeas corpus petition.
— ‘Lafayette Ronald Hubbard’ (a/k/a Justin Craig), aggravated assault, plus drug charges: Grand jury indictments include charges from an assault while in custody. Pleaded guilty on Nov 10 to a 17-year prison sentence (eligible for parole in two to three more years). Awaiting transfer to state prison.
— Aaron Matthes charged for SA of child under 12 years old: OT Scientologist facing multiple mandatory life sentences currently in Pinellas County Jail. Next pretrial court hearing set for Dec 16.

Civil litigation:
— Leah Remini v. Scientology, alleging ‘Fair Game’ harassment and defamation: Some defamation claims were removed by Judge Hammock. Judge Hammock’s ruling is on appeal. Leah’s respondent’s brief is due January 12.
— Baxter, Baxter, and Paris v. Scientology, alleging labor trafficking: Forced to ‘religious arbitration.’
— Valerie Haney v. Scientology: Forced to ‘religious arbitration.’ 15 days of arbitration completed, Val waiting for further word from the IJC.
— Chrissie Bixler et al. v. Scientology and Danny Masterson. Judge Upindra Kalra’s ruling denying Scientology’s motion to strike is on appeal. Appeal fully briefed. Motion to replace Jane Does’ AI-tainted brief denied by court. Awaiting a court hearing date.
— Jane Doe 1 v. Scientology, David Miscavige, and Gavin Potter: Case unsealed and second amended complaint filed. Scientology moves for religious arbitration, gets ruling to depose Jane Doe 1. Trial has been set for January 10, 2028.

But in Phoenix, Arizona, when I was giving live demonstrations on closed circuit TV for students, one staff member came out very, very excited about a discovery he had made. His discovery was: «You acknowledge what the pc says!» There apparently wasn’t another auditor the length and breadth of the world who was doing that, so I decided I had better study this. It led into, over the years, a very deep analysis of the cycle of communication. “There’s a story that’s been going around forever. Heber Jentzsch was taking part in some sort of interview thing with a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist, wanting to portray Heber as a faker, told Heber to exteriorize so everyone could see it happen. Heber, being the clever bloke he was, waited a moment or two, and then deadpanned, ‘Want me to do it again?’ The psychiatrist was, needless to say, left speechless.”

1996: Jeff Jacobsen posted an account of his trip to Scientology headquarters and prison camp, Golden Era Studios (aka Gold Base). “I went by an apartment complex that they use for berthing, and took a photo of the apartment and 3 buses in front. Then I went on to Golden Era Studios. I parked near the new studio and started taking photos. Immediately a guy on a motorcycle came up to me and asked what I was doing. I said I just wanted to take photos of the property and then I’d be leaving. He asked who I was and who I was working for and I refused to answer both questions. He called on his walkie-talkie ‘professional photographer coming up.’ As he drove off to get my license plate number, I went on to take photos of the ship and such. As I was about 20 yards from the gated entry, 2 guys came out and started taking pictures of me. One had a telephoto lens and the other a cheapy camera. I told them that I was just going to take a few photos and leave. They said they were worried about me because I wouldn’t reveal who I was or who I was working for. So I took their photo too. The one guy told me that the curb was their property line, which doesn’t leave much room for walking! I took shots of the sign (after the one guy finally got out of the way when I said I’d stay there as long as it took to get that photo), the ship, and the chapel. When we got to my car he took photos of the inside of the car. Then I opened the trunk to get out my video-camera. He called on his walkie- talkie ‘he’s taking out a video camera.’ Sheesh. He photographed the inside of the trunk of the car, and I told him I considered that a violation of my privacy. I told him I was only going to take about 30 seconds of the studio, which I did. I then thanked him for the conversation, shook hands, and drove off. They have many remote cameras along the metal fences. They have high-powered lights all along the fence. You can read Andre Tabayoyon’s affidavit for other unseen security systems. And on top of the hardware used, security guards instantly come out to question anyone who even stops near their property.”

1995: An article from the Clearwater Times was posted this week, reporting a request for Scientology members to assist in building the Super Power building in downtown Clearwater. “In a survey sent out this week, the church seeks ‘professional Scientologists’ to create sculptures, carry out engineering work, and even supervise aspects of the project, expected to begin in the spring. ‘We are also looking for professionals who know how to put a building together and to manage the personnel who will construct the building,’ the pamphlet says. ‘In fact, we are looking for anybody who has been involved or is involved in the design, planning, and construction of buildings.’ The new facility will be designed for a series of courses dubbed ‘Super Power’ by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Clearwater, the international spiritual headquarters for the church, would be the only place in the world where the courses would be offered. They are not available now. According to Scientology literature, Super Power courses enable a participant to ‘predict and build the future’ and think better. The courses also ‘restore the power of choice.’ The Super Power project is planned for the site across S Fort Harrison Avenue from the Fort Harrison Hotel, Scientology’s signature building in Clearwater. At 170,000 square feet, it would be the largest commercial office building downtown. ‘What exchange do you consider that you would need?’ and provides several choices, including working for the ‘sheer pleasure of helping to get this building built,’ ‘training awards,’ ‘room and board’ or a weekly wage. The survey asks and answers a series of questions, such as ‘Who Will Benefit From This? The answer: Every man, woman and child on planet Earth because it will put planetary clearing right within our grasp.'”

2001: The December issue of Impact Magazine published a speech by Mike Rinder, the director of the Office of Special Affairs, at the annual IAS meeting. “Officials from the Moscow prosecutor’s office called in so-called experts from the Serbski Psychiatric Institute, notorious for its treatment of dissidents during Soviet days. Finding nothing, they invented a claim that our organizations were engaged in financial fraud, taking ‘creative accounting’ to criminal extremes to create fake evidence. Then they issued outrageous tax assessments and opened a criminal case against the Mission of Moscow. In March this year it all came to an end. The court declared the activities of our mission religious and exempt from tax, found the prosecutor guilty of extensive violations of criminal law, the governments cases were dismissed and the prosecutor was ordered to pay all our costs. Within a few short years, lawyers, justice officials, city and regional government personnel and every high level judge in the nation will truly understand Scientology. Because last month, the first official course on Scientology, using our books as the curriculum, became part of theology studies in every university and all institutes of higher learning in Russia! In Geneva, The runners from seven nations arrived at the United Nations Plaza on October 11. Local, national and international dignitaries joined us in force. More that fifty United Nations organizations and members of government delegations representing thirteen nations came, including the United States, Canada, Denmark, and Switzerland. They all pledged their commitment to the goals of the European Marathon for Human Rights and signed our petition. CCHR has been touring thousands through the Death Exhibit, from doctors and lawyers to legislators and authors. No matter their view when they walk in, when they leave, they are at cause, armed with the truth and ready to put and end to psych abuse. As we arm prosecutors with our evidence, they are having greater success than ever putting these criminals where they really belong. The number of psychs jailed this past year was 222, another highest ever. But not only are we putting more psychs behind bars, we are eradicating their habitat. In the past year alone, 489 facilities have closed their doors. That’s more than double last year and another highest ever.”

Ron Hubbard’s science fiction epic Battlefield Earth, whose nine feet of taloned, gas-breathing menace — personified by John Travolta — is already giving film goers a ‘teasing’ glimpse on his way to filling the country’s movie screens in May, 2000.”

1998: A transcript of the 20/20 news program was posted this week. Some highlights: “A young nurse named Hana Whitfield was one of Hubbard’s original Sea Org members. But instead of a magnanimous leader, Whitfield says she found in Hubbard a man increasingly prone to violent fits of temper. ‘He would
whine and cry out and, and express outrage at this or that or the other. Um, that would go on for days.’ According to Whitfield and others, Hubbard ordered rule-breakers confined to the ship’s chain locker for days at a time, including once a 4-year-old boy. On another occasion, witnesses say, Hubbard ordered wayward crew
members to be shoved overboard while the Apollo was docked in port. A Scientology magazine at the time depicted the ceremony. HANA WHITFIELD: ‘And those who were wailing or prostrate with fear were just grabbed and shoved over the ship into the harbor.’ MIKE RINDER: ‘There was a, like a, a little ceremony that grew up that
was like a, um,–I dunno, a joke, like a fun thing–‘OK, I commit my sins to the deep and I arise a better man!’ and he would jump off the side.’ TOM JARRIEL: After wandering the seas for more than five years, Hubbard finally came ashore here, in the sleepy retirement town of Clearwater, Florida. His goal was to establish an international mecca for Scientology. But according to many insiders, Hubbard was growing more and more vindictive toward those who stood in his way. He created what he called ‘The Rehabilitation Project Force.’ HANA WHITFIELD: ‘The people who are assigned to this camp are the worst of the worst. They’re the–they’re criminals in Scientology. I had two big men on either side of me who pretty much manhandled me into this room with no windows. And there was just a mattress on the floor. And I was locked in this room in the dark for however long it was. My crime was, in a Scientology sense, a very serious one. I was accused of having negative thoughts about Mr. Hubbard.’ Stacy Young says she was assigned to the RPF for disobeying an order to interrogate a fellow staff member. For part of the time, Young says she
was in a room on the seventh floor of the Los Angeles church. Her husband admits he stood by and did nothing to try to get her out. STACY YOUNG: ‘I didn’t see Vaughn for several months. I didn’t hear from him. I didn’t have any correspondence with him whatsoever. He did nothing to try and rescue me. (starts crying) I felt that my husband should have rescued me.’ VAUGHN YOUNG: ‘I didn’t take her out. I look back at that–that’s–I should have just picked her up. I should have just picked her up. And I should have just said, ‘If anybody touches me, you’re dead.’ You go through interrogations hour after hour, day after day, week after week, month after month. Breaking you down, breaking you down, breaking you down. Hubbard’s policy was, ‘As long as you’re with us, we’ll leave you alone. But if you speak out against us, we’re gonna dog you and ruin you and destroy you.’ And that’s exactly what they keep trying to do.’ FRANK OLIVER: ‘They can send private investigators out to your home or to your place of work, talk to your neighbors. They will illicitly try and obtain copies of your phone bills or credit rating. They will try and create problems for you at your place of employment. They will try and sue you. They’ll do everything they can try and do to stop you or to silence you.’ TOM JARRIEL: ‘How do you know?’ FRANK OLIVER: ‘I know because that’s what I used to do. I remember having to make the phone calls to all the phone numbers on someone’s phone bill to find out where they had called. These were enemies of the church. You shut them down. You find out what you can about them. You find their weak spot and you expose it. You make it so that they cannot survive or exist. You literally destroy them. I think that when we were chasing around Hana Whitfield that she was very intimidated by this, very disturbed by it. We followed this woman out of her house. We chased her around. We followed her to the airport.’ KIRSTIE ALLEY: ‘If you divorce a woman, and you, she gives me her version of why she left you, how valid do you think it is? If you’ve got a group standing over here of millions of Scientologists telling you daily the successes that they have, the wins that they have, the way they’re helping people, and you can examine the statistics for yourself, and you have a handful of dissatisfied customers over here, then that’s life. You’re never going to have a group of anyone without some dissatisfied customers. So say, fine, you don’t want to be a Scientologist, go.'”

I don’t blame the church when my friends in the church disconnected from me. I blame them and their inability to confront the truth, and also just that they were happy with the church and I’m cool with that, it was their personal decision to disconnect from me, not the church’s. But I just don’t like it when people blame big organizations for actions they do. For example, it wasn’t Hitler’s fault for the holocaust, it was the SS soldiers who did it. They believed in the cause, they wanted to do it, they thought what they were doing was right, they should take responsibility for it and should be blamed for it.”

1997: The Sonora, California Union Democrat reports that Scientology is developing an abandoned mine there for use as a storage vault. “The Church of Spiritual Technology has been blasting at the Lady Washington Mine, 18749 First Avenue, for several weeks and recently finished gunniting about 108 feet of tunnel. Plans filed with the Tuolumne County Building Department show a 15-foot-wide, 250-foot-long-tunnel. The first 98 feet from the entrance are improved, with a 10.5-foot domed ceiling. At the end of the 98 feet is a 10-foot-long storage room. The plans show the rest of the tunnel to be unimproved. The value of the finished project, according to the building permit, is $210,000. The church has also applied for a permit to build a generator building, but that permit has not yet been approved. The Lady Washington Mine and two houses on 26.23 acres were purchased in 1988 by William and Donna Daniels. They bought six parcels in all. Part of the land was sold by William Trimmer, and the rest by Drew Reeves. In 1988, the Daniels gave the property to Norman Starkey, trustee of ‘Author’s Family Trust.’ Starkey gave the property to the Church of Spiritual Technology in 1993.”

Whyte continued the hearing ‘on the papers’ (no oral argument) of my Motion to Amend Counterclaims to February 14, 1996. Because of this move I have decided also to reschedule the Depositions of scientology Managing Agent David Miscavige and President Warren McShane to correspond to a ruling on this matter, or to other scheduling orders. The longer the time until cut-off the better for me, a pro per proceeding in forma pauperis because it allows me to collect more collateral evidence relating to my RICO counterclaim and permits me more time to learn court procedure and legal principles — not to mention dealing with a dilatory and evasive adverse party who is supported by six attorneys in four law firms. I will be filing a Motion to Compel and a Motion to hold in Contempt later in the week and likely several such motions in January, 1997 relating to evasive responses by the plaintiff to certain interrogatories and documents requests, as well as initial disclosure.”

“The major cause of trouble in seeking to correct OTs has been violations of the auditor assignment policy, whereby a person of lower case level than the OT was trying to audit or cram the OT. Not only does this put the OT on a withhold of confidential data, but a person of lower case level has no reality on the materials of the case level of the OT and can easily stir up aspects of the case that should have been left alone, or, if taken up handled fully. Additionally if the OT did get messed up, then he could only be repaired by using repair actions appropriate to his case level. 1995: A first person account was posted to a.r.s this week by Stanley Richards. He claims to have known Hubbard in 1952. “To tell the truth, though, I always knew that his genius contained an element of the charlatan or magician – perhaps shaman’ would be a better word, because the shaman recognises the necessary element of illusion or fiction required by his work. For example, there were theories in scientology about our progress toward a near perfect emotional and mental state called clear’ which I always knew to be a fiction, but which I supported because I thought it was a way of keeping people going in the process (therapy) – giving them hope and a future: hope as a necessary fantasy. Then there was the time, too, when he got everybody worked up about the threat of communism to Scientology: that the big boys in the Kremlin were out to destroy scientology because it was a danger to them. Hubbard was the instigator of this scare. Every student was put through a lie detector test to ensure that there were no communist agents amongst us. Again, I knew that this was a fiction and that the Kremlin had never heard of Scientology, let alone thought it a danger to them. I went along with this, too, because I thought it was a political move which would boost the prestige of Scientology, making it more important in high places as well as giving scientology students a greater sense of their importance in the world. I am sure this was Hubbard’s motive, at least in part, so I forgave Hubbard all these deceptions because of what I thought were his overall good intentions. And that’s the
thing you see: Hubbard was so sure that his intentions and his subject were for the good of mankind that he convinced everyone else – but that is what a good magician does: makes everyone believe in his illusions.”

“Once in a while you’ll send a preclear up to the moon, and Earth and sun, you know, doing a Grand Tour, and you get a fascinating reaction from him if he is really on the ball. There’s a space station on the back of the moon — that’s space station 33 — and it has corridors and observatory domes and a lot of other things, a lot of odds and ends. But these corridors are on different levels. So that we have a hallway, you see, a corridor, and then we have one which is maybe 12 or 15 feet above the level. You see, the next level. So we’d go down this corridor, and then we’d have to go up 12 or 15 feet to go down to the next corridor. And they’ll take a look at this and they will see that there is nothing but sheer wall face between this lower corridor and the upper corridor floor — 15 foot sheer drop between these two corridors. And they will say, ‘Something is wrong here. There are no stairs. I don’t know what I’m doing here, or what’s going on, but this place is kind of funny. 2001: The Wall Street Journal reported that the trustee in the Reed Slatkin fraud investigation has filed a report detailing some of his findings. “Back in 1988, Mr. Slatkin made a startling admission in a handwritten note: ‘Instead of working on stocks, I was working on fabricating statements.’ This acknowledgment was discovered by lawyers for Mr. Slatkin’s clients who are looking into his rise and sudden fall. Revelations about what went wrong are contained in a 2,024-page interim report that was filed Friday in Santa Barbara, Calif., bankruptcy court after being compiled by court-appointed trustee R. Todd Neilson and lawyers at Kirkland & Ellis, a firm representing creditors, who are trying to unravel the case and help investors recoup their losses. Two copies of Mr. Slatkin’s handwritten admission of ‘fabricating statements’ were among some two million pages of documents provided by Mr. Slatkin to the trustee. Attorneys who have seen the written statement say it fits the form of a ‘knowledge report,’ a document used to report one’s ethical violations in the Church of Scientology, of which Mr. Slatkin is an ordained minister. It is unclear, however, whether anyone other than Mr. Slatkin ever saw it. The report notes that the soaring fortunes of EarthLink played a role in helping Mr. Slatkin attract more investors. In recent years, he picked up such high-profile clients as CNN commentator Greta Van Susteren, actors Anne Archer and Giovanni Ribisi, Pennsylvania’s prominent Walton family and ‘Spy Game’ producer Armyan Bernstein. The report concludes: ‘That single successful investment propelled him to a new level of theretofore unattainable credibility.’ The report names 75 investors who reaped the bulk of the $197 million in gains generated by Mr. Slatkin’s operation. About a dozen of these investors also served as ‘highly paid consultants’ to Mr. Slatkin, the report says. The report devotes several pages to Chris Mancuso and Ron Rakow, whose house was raided by the FBI in June in conjunction with Mr. Slaktin’s criminal probe. The families of Messrs. Rakow and Mancuso
received a total of about $12.8 million in profits from their investments over the years, and both received additional unspecified millions of dollars in ‘consulting fees’ and partnership arrangements, according to the report.”
