“The video I posted describes that they remote viewed (years ago) the emergence of Q Anon. And further indicates that the arrival of Q Anon was made possible thanks to the LRH Journal 67, where Ron describes who the SPs are on this planet (Bankers and the 12 SPs). Subsequently they describe Ron’s Journal 68 and give a quote by LRH of it. Then the narrator in the video indicates that he has seen that the war was won by Scientology and that is why Q Anon is able to make his appearance.”

1999: The National Enquirer published an article on Scientology celebrities protesting against Psychiatry with the Citizen’s Commission on Human Rights. “Scientologists Lisa Marie Presley, Kirstie Alley and Juliette Lewis led a protest against psychiatrists and their prescribing of medications to treat young people, claiming such drugs are responsible for violent outbursts such as the recent killings in Littleton, Colo. Dressed in black and carrying black balloons, they marched around the Washington Convention Center on May 15 chanting, ‘Don’t drug our kids! Don’t shock our kids! Just leave our kids alone!’ ‘They’re making drug addicts out of our children,’ declared Alley, who
brought her two children to the protest. ‘It’s barbaric, and it’s being promoted by psychiatrists.’ Marla Filidei, vice president of the Church of
Scientology’s Citizen’s Commission on Human Rights, told The ENQUIRER: ‘We’re opposed to drugging children for normal child behavior. All the celebrities in this event called me because of the killings at Columbine High School in Littleton. As children, they saw that many energetic,
artistic kids were given drugs like Ritalin and the drugs just stifled these kids’ creativity and energy. But Dr. Nada Stotland, of the American Psychiatric Association, told a reporter: ‘There is no evidence that psychiatric medications cause violence in children or adults. I have no doubt these medications have saved more kids’ lives than they’ve taken. This effort by the Scientologists to frighten people away from getting treatment for their kids is sad.'”

1999: Web book store amazon.com this week removed Jon Atack’s book A Piece of Blue Sky from its offerings. Amazon later announced that it would reverse the decision, but the book is still missing from Amazon, despite continued availability on other bookstore sites. From Wired News: “Amazon.com has removed a controversial book from its listings, a book well known for angering the Church of Scientology. A Piece of Blue Sky, by UK writer Jon Atack, is an expose of the Scientology movement from its creation in 1950 until the death of founder L. Ron Hubbard in 1986. The book disappeared from Amazon’s site only recently. Amazon spokeswoman Lizzie Allen would only say that ‘under certain circumstances, for legal reasons, we need to stop selling a book. I really just can’t comment any further.’ Officials at the Church of Scientology said they have had nothing to do with the removal of the book from Amazon’s site. One woman told Wired News that the book was illegal to sell in the United Kingdom, and that was why Amazon had removed the book. ‘It was declared defamatory because it contained false statements,’ said church spokeswoman Linda Peters. ‘Amazon didn’t know about it. We don’t really know who alerted them. There are a lot of Scientologists around the planet.’ Peters said the ruling took place ‘four or five years ago.’ Amazon’s Allen said she was surprised that the church would speak for Amazon, but she still couldn’t say what had prompted the bookseller to remove the book. But the ‘legal reasons’ can’t be very far-reaching, since both barnesandnoble.com and Books.com still offer it for sale. ‘We haven’t been contacted by anyone to remove this book,’ said Lisa Lanspery, manager of external communications for barnesandnoble.com. ‘It’s on our site and it’s going to stay there.'”

1999: A preliminary hearing was held in Dennis Erlich’s copyright violations case. “Yesterday was my pretrial conference in San Jose. Federal judge Ronald Whyte presided. The scienos wanted all my witnesses removed. We had asked that material they had collected to Dead Agent and Black PR me and my witnesses from a confessional setting be banned from trial. The scienos asked Whyte to exclude ‘any reference to the practices or beliefs of Scientology, its history, the background or meaning of the copyrighted texts, Erlich’s own involvement with Scientology, and any testimony by any witness that has any relationship to Scientology.’ Whyte indicated he needed to know how the texts were used in scn and would welcome testimony, evidence or witnesses to that end. He made it clear that he was not going to use the trial to judge the merit or fraudulent nature of scn. Evidence Relating to Alt.Religion.Scientology. Whyte said he would need to see the ongoing discussions in order to determine the context of the alleged posts and the threads in which they allegedly occurred. Since some of the material deals with Fair Game and treatment of Espees, Whyte’s invitation for evidence and testimony about how the texts are used in the cult covers this. Harold asked the court to set a date for when the OT material and NOTs material had to be refiled – not under seal – and bedlam ensued at the scieno table. Whyte had unsealed the case and ordered to refile all their sealed filings, unsealed. Whyte lifted the 1997 protective order sealing the material in this case (the court file) because it was based on the bogus trade secret claims made by the scienos at that time. He also opted to maintain an open and public courtroom throughout the trial and declare the exhibits containing the courses at issue are not confidential at trial. In another order he bifurcated the case into a court trial on the scienos’ copyright claims, and a jury trial (not yet scheduled) for my counter-claims. Whyte also gave a clear indication that he wanted the case to settle before trial and ordered us to a settlement conference in front of Judge Fogel next Thursday. And he would, by that same day, be able to tell us if the trial was going to go forward on May 4th so we could inform all the witnesses that they’d be testifying. Whyte also denied the scienos’ motion to close the courtroom and trial to the public. On a sadder note, based on the theory that it would have been gathered eventually in discovery anyway, Whyte intends to allow the admission of evidence allegedly gleaned during the unconstitutional 7-hour raid the scienos perpetrated on me in February 1995, despite the fact it was obtained illegally.”

Today at the Daily Beast: What Valerie Haney’s Scientology ‘arbitration’ was really like

Over at The Daily Beast, we have a story today with one of the closest looks at what Scientology is putting Valerie Haney through as she experienced three days of the church’s “religious arbitration” in Los Angeles.

If you remember, Luis and Rocio Garcia, who went through the first court-ordered arbitration in Scientology’s history in 2017, endured a single afternoon of what Luis characterized as a kangaroo court.

But in Valerie’s case, not only did Scientology put her through three days of frustrating, irrelevant testimony and insults, but they want her to come back in January for even more.

The implication is pretty clear: The longer Scientology draws this out, the longer Valerie has to wait before she can file an appeal in court of what she’s been put through.

We hope you take a look at our piece at the Daily Beast, but we also have something we think is pretty remarkable here at our Substack: The story behind the story, and how your Proprietor ended up personally witnessing Valerie, at the conclusion of all three days, recording sworn statements with her attorneys.

Here’s how that happened…

It seemed like a decent turnout for an early Monday afternoon: About half of the tables that could be seen from the casino’s southern entrance had players hunched over their cards.

As tempting as it was to try my luck, I walked past three large rooms of poker and blackjack tables to get to the hotel lobby and check in.

I wasn’t there to play cards. The gamble I was interested in was taking place less than a mile away and on the other side of the Golden State Freeway, where a woman was just then walking into one of the lesser-known buildings owned by the Church of Scientology, and where the odds were likely going to be stacked against her.

Valerie Haney had let me know that her “religious arbitration” was going to take place at Scientology’s massive printing plant in Commerce, California, and that she didn’t mind if I was close by to debrief her after each of three days that the arbitration was scheduled to happen. But the details had come together only at the last minute, giving me less than 24 hours to come up with a plan.

And although I’d grown up in LA and had driven through the city of Commerce countless times, I knew almost nothing about it other than it featured a former tire factory built like an Assyrian fortress that had been turned into an outlet mall, and nearby was a solitary 9-story hotel that enjoyed some kind of legal loophole allowing Las Vegas-style gaming in an otherwise inhospitable and industrial spot about halfway between downtown Los Angeles and Orange County on the 5 Freeway.

The Commerce Casino: Did it, like Vegas establishments, have cheap rooms for gamblers? Turned out its prices were very friendly, so I booked a room for three nights and told Haney that I’d be just minutes away when the Scientologists let her out each day.

But there was a complication. That morning, I learned for the first time that her attorneys had hired a team from a court reporting service to show up with her.

We both knew that Scientology would never let them inside to record what was going on. But only now I learned that the attorneys wanted to record something with her after each day’s session, and how far were they going to drag her away from Commerce for that? My plan was suddenly falling apart.

As I took in the view from room 625, with a clear shot over the freeway to the distant towers of downtown LA, I wondered if I’d wasted my money.

But then, a few anxious hours later, a message arrived from Haney.

She was out of the arbitration and they had a lot to talk about. Could her attorneys and the court reporting team record a sworn statement in my hotel room, since it was so close by?

I’d hit the jackpot without even stepping foot on the casino floor.

Over the next three days, Valerie, her attorneys, and the court reporting crew they had hired set up and recorded Valerie literally in my casino hotel room.

I sat on the bed, taking notes, and marveled at my luck.

2001: Caroline Letkeman reported a protest at the Vancouver Scientology org. “We brought hundreds if not thousands of people uptone with our very positive picket signs and very positive presences. Dozens of people came by to find out what we were picketing and to take one of our flyers. One woman came out of the building to hand out copies of a new scn publication ‘Voice of the Volunteer Minister: The Volunteer Minister’s Newspaper. Gerry charmed her out of a copy and contributed it to the
International Archives. We had some actual contact by a scientologist who spoke on the subject of the picket. His name is Ty-bor or Ty-borg, we weren’t sure which. I asked Ty-borg his last name but he wouldn’t say. Ty-borg confronted us with some very unusual questions. He began with a series of questions such as, ‘How many people die in hospitals a year?’ and ‘Why aren’t you picketing them?’ ‘How many people in Canada die from prescribed drugs?’ Gerry gave him his best estimates, and nope, he was wrong on all numbers. But Ty-Borg had the numbers right at the tip of his analytical mind. Gerry told him that we were doing a Lisa McPherson Memorial Picket, and Ty-borg responded that he had ‘studied her case and she died of a blood clot.’ That’s why it was so odd when Ty-borg seemed to want to impart information of a medical nature about ‘my daughter.’ Later, I realized it was simply that he had mistaken me for Lisa McPherson’s mother. Obviously he didn’t know she was deceased. It was kind of a tense few minutes when I kept on demanding that he explain what he meant by ‘your daughter’s medical information.’ At first, I thought he was being exceptionally cruel in his bullbaiting, but it was just a case of mistaken identity. I gave Ty-borg a copy of our handout, and pointed out which side of the handout had to do with my daughter, Ann. As Ty-borg disappeared back into the scn building, he encouraged me to study the Lisa McPherson case.”

Coming Sunday: Valerie Haney talks to Aussie 60 Minutes in first TV sitdown since ‘Aftermath’

In 2019, we had a happy accident: We just happened to be in Los Angeles visiting family when Tara Brown and a 60 Minutes Australia crew were in the area, and asked if we could go with them up to the Twin Peaks compound in the San Bernardino mountains where Scientology has stashed Shelly Miscavige since 2005.

The result was an episode that was one of the program’s biggest on YouTube for international viewers, and a segment that was more substantive than anything a major US network has done about Shelly’s disappearance.

Well, the 60 Minutes Australia folks rang us up again, telling us that they were interviewing Valerie Haney in her first TV sitdown since her 2019 Scientology and the Aftermath episode.

They were interested in the things Valerie has been telling us here at the Bunker and at Rolling Stone, and would we want to take part? We were happy to.

Yesterday, we were sent a sneak peek of this Sunday’s episode, and we’re pretty excited to see what Tara has put together.

She’s talking to some familiar faces, including Marc and Claire Headley, who are always great about the conditions at Int Base, where Valerie escaped from in 2016.

And it looks like your proprietor also made the final cut.

We’re told that after the episode airs in Australia, a version of it will be uploaded to YouTube for the rest of us to see. We can’t wait to see Valerie on camera again.

Valerie Haney: Here’s why the press should be asking Tom Cruise about Shelly Miscavige

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One hasn’t done quite the business that its creators were hoping, but still, with $91 million in domestic sales and $168 million overseas for a total of $259 million as of yesterday, it was well along to making up for its whopping $290 cost.

Its star Tom Cruise hit the red carpet in various staggered openings in places like Rome and Sydney before showing up in theaters in Atlanta and Washington DC.

Australian singer Kate Ceberano attended the Sydney premiere and then posted a photo of herself arm in arm with Cruise on her Instagram account. Media outlets pounced on it because besides being a fellow entertainer, Ceberano is also an OT 8 Scientologist: She’s spent decades in the Church of Scientology so she could reach the highest level of its “Bridge to Total Freedom,” its incrementally-more-expensive regimen of cosmic, past-life therapy that can take many years to complete.

It’s the latest evidence that Cruise remains dedicated to Scientology, and it’s once again been noted in various press treatments of him, just like last year with the release of Top Gun: Maverick.

But this year, Cruise’s critics have been thinking about a different kind of impossible mission: locating Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Cruise’s best friend, Scientology leader David Miscavige.

Former Scientologist Leah Remini has been raising new questions about Shelly after a recent report by journalist Yashar Ali that called into question how the LAPD handled a 2013 missing person report Remini had filed about Shelly.

And now Valerie Haney, who worked in the private quarters of Dave and Shelly before her own harrowing escape from the organization, has some new details about the private lives of Scientology’s ruling couple that demonstrate Cruise’s direct connection to Shelly’s story. (Both Cruise and the Church of Scientology did not respond to requests for comment for this story.)

As Cruise enjoys another round of press, we wonder if anyone will have a chance to ask him, “Where’s Shelly?”

Leah Remini first noticed that Shelly Miscavige seemed to be missing when she didn’t show up with her husband David Miscavige at the wedding of the new century: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ November 2006 nuptials in an Italian castle.

For the second time, Dave was acting as Cruise’s best man (he had also fulfilled that role at Cruise’s 1990 wedding to Nicole Kidman), but this time Dave was conspicuously without his wife.

For years, David and Shelly Miscavige had been Scientology’s ultimate power couple. They had both been raised as children in the organization, were married in 1980 (Dave was 20, Shelly 18), and, when founder L. Ron Hubbard died on January 24, 1986, Dave had already begun muscling other pretenders to the throne out of the way.

David Miscavige soon became Scientology’s ruthless leader, and adopted the moniker “C.O.B.” for “chairman of the board.” Shelly, as a sort of lesser co-ruler, was given the title “C.O.B. Assistant,” and former members of the “Sea Org” — Scientology’s hardcore wing who’ve signed billion-year contracts — who worked close to the Miscaviges say they always used these titles around them and would never dare to say their actual names.

C.O.B. and C.O.B. Assistant ran Scientology as a dictatorship for the next 19 years and spent most of their time at the church’s secretive international management base, a sprawling 500-acre compound near Hemet, California, about 90 miles east of Los Angeles.

Surviving the death of a founder can be tricky for any insular organization, but that same year, 1986, when Miscavige was consolidating control, Scientology had an amazing stroke of good luck.

Several months after Hubbard’s death, Mimi Rogers, an actress who had grown up in Scientology, began dating Tom Cruise and started bringing him around to a North Hollywood facility to get some experience in Dianetics and Scientology.

Cruise was only 24, but he was already a star, with Risky Business and All the Right Moves under his belt and Top Gun coming out that summer. Rogers told family members that she hoped Scientology would help cure Cruise’s notorious skirt-chasing.

They were married on May 9, 1987, one of the holiest dates on the Scientology calendar: Hubbard’s book that started the movement, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, was released on May 9, 1950, and getting married on that date (during Scientology’s “AD 36,” for “After Dianetics”) suggests that Cruise was already pretty well-indoctrinated by that point.

But former Scientology executives told me that David Miscavige had an issue with Rogers’ father, a “squirrel” ( a Scientology slur for someone who had left the official church but still practiced Hubbard’s ideas).

In 1990, Miscavige had Cruise’s auditor encourage him to split with Rogers in favor of Nicole Kidman, his young Days of Thunder co-star. And initially, Kidman became an enthusiastic Scientologist, achieving the rather advanced level of OT 2 in only a few years, her former auditor told me.

But then, around 1992, Kidman soured on Scientology and pulled Cruise away from it with her, which included several years filming Eyes Wide Shut in the U.K. with Stanley Kubrick. By the time they broke up in 2000, Miscavige had become determined to pull Cruise back into the fold and make him more dedicated to Scientology than ever.

By 2004, Cruise was so committed, he showed up at a grand opening of a new “Ideal” church in Madrid, Spain (the only Ideal Org grand opening he’s ever attended) and even gave a speech to the crowd in Spanish. And it was at that event that Cruise told Miscavige that he was having some difficulty finding a new girlfriend after recently splitting up with his Vanilla Sky co-star, Penelope Cruz.

Miscavige became determined to help his friend, dreamed up an elaborate mission to find Cruise a suitable partner, and put in charge of the operation his most trusted aide:

His wife, Shelly.

By then it was 2004, and Valerie Haney had been working in the intimate personal quarters of David and Shelly Miscavige for two years. She served them their meals, changed their sheets, traveled with them on Cruise’s private jet, and went with them on vacations with Cruise to places like the Caribbean.

That summer, for Cruise’s 42nd birthday, Dave threw a lavish party for the actor on the Freewinds, Scientology’s cruise ship. Video eventually emerged of Cruise being feted on the ship by the Scientology band playing hit songs from his movies, and included Cruise doing his best Bob Seger impression for a rendition of the Risky Business hit “Old Time Rock and Roll.”

But as Miscavige was throwing the lavish party for Cruise — flying in chefs from Nobu for a sushi night, and chefs from Paris for another night — Shelly was becoming more and more conflicted about her husband’s bromance.

“That was on the Freewinds, in 2004. Shelly would be crying in her cabin, hiding her tears from Dave, of course,” Haney says. She stresses that as Shelly’s personal steward she had very close contact with her in those years, and the two would share private details of their marriages with each other.

“She was crying from how much disrespect Dave had for her, and how much Dave would absolutely do anything for Tom. And he told Tom that,” Haney says.

“Shelly asked me at one point, what do you think about Dave doing all this for Tom? I told her, ‘It’s like Dave’s married to him.’ And she agreed.”

Haney adds that Shelly had gotten along with Cruise and didn’t have a problem with his increased Scientology involvement.

“They did get along. Shelly didn’t hate Tom. She just hated the way Dave acted around Tom,” Haney claims.

She watched as Dave lavished luxuries on Cruise, which often included work performed by Sea Org members.

“Tom was used to getting perks, like having his car and his house remodeled by Sea Org workers. We even decked out his whole hangar,” she says, referring to the Burbank home of Cruise’s airplanes. “It would have cost over a million dollars if he’d outsourced it, and we did it all in-house. It took us two months to do it. If he’d used outside workers, it would have taken a year.”

But as a dedicated Scientologist, Cruise knew he couldn’t be “out-exchange” (giving less than one’s received) by accepting so many benefits without offering something in return, she points out.

“He gives Dave the use of his plane. He donates millions so he’s not out-exchange for the perks he gets,” she says.

“Dave would only fly private — on Tom’s plane. And while using parishioner money. It was Tom’s pilot and flight attendant. But I was told we were paying for the gas,” she remembers.

Then, in 2004, Dave dreamed up the idea of auditioning actresses without telling them that they were really trying out to be Cruise’s next love interest, as chronicled in a 2012 Vanity Fair exposé.

He put Shelly in charge of it.

Haney says she was aghast at the prospect.

“Shelly said, ‘This is fucking ridiculous. I can’t believe I have to do this. Do we really have to babysit Tom to get him a wife?’ That’s when she started to go negative on Dave,” Haney remembers.

The Madrid event happened in September 2004. By that November, the auditions organized by Shelly had produced a candidate: a young Scientologist actress named Nazanin Boniadi who dated Cruise for about three months, till January 2005.

According to Alex Gibney’s 2015 HBO documentary Going Clear, one of the reasons that Boniadi frustrated Cruise was that she had a hard time understanding Miscavige’s thick New Jersey accent (Boniadi is British and was born in Tehran). She was told her relationship with Cruise was over by his Scientology aide, Tommy Davis.

Cruise, meanwhile, was reaching new heights as Scientology’s poster boy. In October 2004, Miscavige had rewarded him for his new all-in attitude by giving him a special “Freedom Medal of Valor” and then sending Cruise out to be the church’s ambassador. The actor even convinced director Steven Spielberg to let him set up information tents about Scientology as they were filming War of the Worlds, and then in June, Cruise had his infamous TODAY interview with Matt Lauer, spewing Scientology views about psychiatry and appearing unhinged.

By April 2005, Cruise had made public that he was now dating Katie Holmes. But the auditioning program had, as Haney indicates, done real damage to the relationship between Shelly and Dave.

Later that year, around early September 2005, several former Sea Org workers who were at the base near Hemet at the time say that Shelly angered Dave when she showed some initiative while he was in Los Angeles. With Dave away, she was able to fill some job positions that had remained open because of his indecision, and she had some of their belongings crated up so a renovation could take place. When Miscavige returned and saw what she had done, he blew his stack, several people who were there told me.

A week later, Shelly vanished.

Cruise and Holmes had Suri the following spring, in April 2006, and their wedding at the castle in Italy took place in November.

That’s when Remini noticed that Shelly wasn’t there, and, as she describes in her bestselling memoir, Troublemaker, Remini noticed David Miscavige getting handsy with his “personal communicator,” a woman named Laurisse Stuckenbrock.

When Remini asked about it, she was told by Tommy Davis that she didn’t have “the fucking rank” to even ask the question.

Remini went back to her hotel room that night, called a close friend in Los Angeles, and then wrote up a report about what she’d seen. Scientologists are encouraged to turn in fellow church members for breaking the rules, but in this case Remini dared to turn in the leader of the church itself, David Miscavige.

In Troublemaker, she describes the alleged price she paid: Months of bizarre mental conditioning that she was made to pay $300,000 for, conditioning that convinced her that she hadn’t seen what she did at the wedding.

Shelly, meanwhile, was seen again a year later, in the summer of 2007, onboard a ship in San Pedro harbor for the funeral of her father, Maurice “Barney” Barnett.

I began writing about Shelly’s disappearance in 2012 at the Village Voice as evidence began to mount that she had been moved to a small Scientology compound in the San Bernardino Mountains near Lake Arrowhead, California.

In July 2013, Remini went public that she had defected from Scientology, and a month later she filed a missing person report about Shelly Miscavige with the LAPD, who almost immediately told the media that Remini’s report of Shelly missing was “unfounded.”

At that point I talked to Lt. Andre Dawson of the LAPD, who told me that two of his detectives had met with Shelly, that she was fine, and that she had chosen not to make a public statement.

He wouldn’t tell me where the meeting took place, and when I asked him if the meeting had taken place in the presence of other Scientology officials, he said “that’s classified.”

Three years later, in 2016, Remini had an attorney send official requests to the LAPD for more information about what they had done in response to her missing person report. (They had never responded to her at all about it after she initially filed it.) After several weeks, she was told the LAPD had no intention of giving her any more information.

Then, last month, Yashar Ali released his new bombshell report. He learned not only where the 2013 meeting with LAPD detectives had taken place — a coffee shop in West Covina, California — but that Shelly had been accompanied by Jeffrey Riffer, an attorney who has made appearances in court as David Miscavige’s personal lawyer. (Riffer did not respond to a request for comment.)

Yashar had also found that in 2010, five years after her disappearance, Shelly had renewed her driver’s license, also in West Covina, and he obtained the photo that was taken for it. It’s the first photo of Shelly since 2004, when she was at the Madrid Ideal Org opening where Tom Cruise delivered an impassioned speech in Spanish.

“She looks like a beaten-down puppy dog, like she was going to cry,” Haney says after looking at the 2010 driver’s license photo.

Haney spent a total of 22 years in the Sea Org. She had been born to Scientologist parents in 1979, and was raised in the “Cadet Org” as young as 6 years old, signing the Sea Org’s billion-year contract at 15. She then caught the eye of Shelly Miscavige, who had her moved to the secretive Gold Base near Hemet to work in Shelly and Dave’s private quarters.

In 2005, when Shelly’s relationship with Dave deteriorated, Haney was “busted” down to more menial work, as Shelly vanished from the base.

Eventually, Haney found work in the casting department at the base, and had access to non-Scientologist actors who came to the base for shoots. One day, in 2016, she knew that her job was about to change again and she would have her last chance to be around outsiders. She climbed into the trunk of one of the actors’ cars, who then unwittingly drove her to Los Angeles.

It was a daring escape story that Remini featured in 2018 as the premiere episode of the third and final season of her A&E series Scientology and the Aftermath, revealing that after Haney’s escape she had gone to work as Remini’s assistant. (Valerie works for another producer today.)

Then, in 2019, Haney filed suit against Scientology and David Miscavige, alleging that she had been held against her will while she was a Sea Org worker, and that she had become the focus of an intense Scientology harassment campaign because she dared to speak out.

The lawsuit, however, was forced into Scientology’s brand of internal “religious arbitration” when a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled that contracts Haney signed with Scientology obligated her not to sue but to take her dispute to the church and a panel of arbitrators who must be Scientologists in good standing.

Remini, meanwhile, has been continually reminding her large online audience about Shelly Miscavige.

“I will never stop fighting for Shelly,” she tweeted late last month.

When Scientology does respond to questions about Shelly Miscavige (which is rare), it puts out statements that Shelly is on a special work assignment. In 2018, attorney Jeffrey Riffer (yes, the same one who reportedly accompanied Shelly to the LAPD meeting in 2013) wrote to Jezebel to complain about a story it ran about Shelly “missing.” That was untrue, Riffer said, adding that “Mrs. Miscavige has no interest in appearing in public merely because Remini… wants to use that as some cheap publicity stunt to get ratings.”

And Shelly may be resigned to her fate, working and living at the small compound in the mountains above San Bernardino.

But we wonder what Cruise has been told about a woman he was once close to, and who had run the auditions to find him a suitable mate in 2004.

“Dave has told Tom that Shelly is out-ethics and has turned suppressive,” Valerie Haney says, referring to Scientology concepts about wayward church members who are expelled and designated enemies of the church (“suppressive”).

“That’s the only way that Tom would be OK with it. Because Tom loved Shelly. So Dave told him some lie of some sort, because Dave and Tom have this bromance,” Haney says.

“He would have told Tom that Shelly had committed suppressive acts and ‘needs to be off my lines.’ And Tom would have said, ‘Oh, that sucks, but I trust you.’ That’s my assumption.”

In 2012, I interviewed John Brousseau, a former Scientology Sea Org official who had been David Miscavige’s brother-in-law for 16 years, and who had also worked very closely with Cruise.

Like Haney, Brousseau was one of a small handful of people who had any chance of understanding what the relationship between Cruise and Miscavige was really about.

Here’s what he told me: “Tom Cruise worships David Miscavige like a god.”

Cruise is a true believer, not a reluctant follower. He actually believes that Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard was the greatest human being who ever lived, and that David Miscavige is the most important person living today, these former Sea Org members tell me.

And Haney says it’s important to keep that in mind when you’re trying to figure out why Cruise does what he does.

For example, from 1986 to 2012, Cruise had been in a series of monogamous relationships and by all accounts was extremely involved in the lives of his partners.

Why, I asked Haney, has he gone so long without another serious committed relationship?

Haney floored me with her answer. She thinks Cruise may be under orders by Miscavige not to get involved with someone while Miscavige is distracted and stuck in litigation.

“Tom’s following orders,” she says.

Scientology gaslighting courts about arbitration? Valerie Haney has proof of it

Just this past Friday, we expressed to you our amusement when we noticed Scientology’s attorneys doing their usual gaslighting of a US court, in this case the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, where Valeska Paris and Gawain and Laura Baxter are attempting to get their labor trafficking lawsuit against Scientology and David Miscavige reinstated.

Specifically, they’re petitioning the court for an “interlocutory” appeal of the decision by Tampa federal Judge Thomas Barber, who found that his hands were tied by the law and he had no choice but to derail their suit in favor of Scientology’s internal “religious arbitration.”

One reason that Valeska and the Baxters are asking the higher court to grant them the quick appeal now is that, they say, it would take a couple of years to actually go through Scientology’s brand of arbitration when they feel that it’s an unfair process.

Well, we told you that Scientology got out the smelling salts and acted offended and dismayed that anyone would suggest that its arbitration process is anything other than fair, efficient, and lightning fast.

Perhaps the Petitioners’ most galling argument is the unfounded assertion that their process is more efficient than arbitration. Petitioners assert (without support) that arbitration of their claims could take two years. Scientology arbitration is expeditious, free, and convenient, as arbitrators can travel anywhere….had Petitioners honored their Agreements, the arbitration could have concluded by now.

We told you we thought this was a howler: Just look at the cases of the Garcias and of Valerie Haney, which each took years of nonsense after courts also forced their lawsuits into arbitration.

Well, after we wrote that we thought it would be a good idea to follow up with Valerie, who sued Scientology in 2019 and had her lawsuit forced into arbitration in 2020.

The last time we talked to her, for a piece over at Rolling Stone, she had learned that Scientology has assembled a panel of arbitrators for her case, but they haven’t told her who is on it. (And this was after she had nominated such Scientologists as Elisabeth Moss, Tom Cruise, and Shelly Miscaivge, all of whom were suggestions rejected by the church.)

We told Valerie that in Valeska’s lawsuit, the church is telling the Eleventh Circuit that its arbitration process is quick and “convenient.”

“Unbelievable,” she replied.

She then caught us up on the latest in her case, and detailed just what a bunch of additional nonsense she’s going through.

If you remember, in February Judge Gail Killefer held a hearing in Valerie’s case and said that with an arbitrating panel assembled by Scientology, she didn’t want to hear from either side until they had done the proceeding, and she set a future hearing date of November 6, by which time she expects the arbitration to be done.

Also, she got a little aggressive with Valerie’s attorney, Graham Berry, when she learned that Scientology had been sending correspondence to Valerie at an old address. She told Berry to make sure Scientology had Valerie’s most current home address.

“That’s an order,” Judge Killefer said to Berry.

“So I sent a mailing address to Graham to give them,” Valerie told us for the Rolling Stone piece. She assured us again that she did so.

Well, you have to understand something about Scientology and its arbitration process. Scientology not only uses it to kill lawsuits by former members, it fully intends to humiliate those former members as much as possible.

Numerous times, Scientology has whined to the court that Valerie keeps having her attorney try to communicate for her. By Scientology’s reckoning Valerie should be going hat in hand to the church’s “International Justice Chief” Mike Ellis, and that she’s violating Scientology’s rules by, you know, having an attorney.

So, let’s keep this in mind: In February, the court ordered Graham Berry, Valerie’s attorney, to make sure Scientology had Valerie’s most current address. Valerie assures us that she gave Graham that address to give to Scientology.

But now, months later, Valerie has received a letter from Ellis, complaining that she never personally informed him of the new address, and he had to track her down using an online records search service, and sent three copies of his letter to three different Valerie Haneys where she might be living.

Can you imagine poor Mike Ellis having to exert himself this much?

Anyway, it’s all just theater, and more gaslighting, and more wasting of time because of course Valerie’s address was given to Scientology that very day of the court hearing in February. But because Valerie didn’t humiliate herself and go crawling personally to Ellis, he’s acting like she’s holding up the entire process.

He even warned her that if she didn’t personally send him communications asking for the arbitration, it wasn’t going to happen.

Oh, and also, he informed her that the arbitration, if it does happen, will take place in Los Angeles — even though they know she’s moved to the other side of the country.

Yes, Ellis wrote that in a letter to Valerie exactly one week before Scientology’s attorneys lied to the Eleventh Circuit that Scientology arbitration was “expeditious, free, and convenient, as arbitrators can travel anywhere.”

“They’re lying through their teeth,” Valerie says.

She says she was immediately reminded of another time when Scientology lied to her about how long something was going to take.

“They told my dad it would take only two weeks for me to route out when I was leaving Scientology, and I’d be back by Christmas. They actually let me go on February 14. Two weeks turned into three months. And now three months in this lawsuit has turned into three years,” she says, referring to Scientology’s claim that arbitration takes only three months, when it’s been more than three years since her case was forced into arbitration by a Los Angeles judge.

“Am I surprised and shocked? No. Because Scientology has been manipulating the legal system from day one. It’s what they do best.”

Meet John Blosser, Scientology’s new shill, who is targeting Graham Berry

A few days ago at Facebook, attorney Graham Berry notified his friends that he appears to be the target of a new “noisy investigation” by the Church of Scientology.

Even better, Berry also mentioned that he was the subject of Scientology “Fair Game” in an official court document in the Valerie Haney lawsuit, and as you can imagine, Scientology’s attorneys are not happy about it!

Oh, Graham. Giving Scientology heartburn for more than 30 years now.

But let us back up a bit and tell you about a man named John Blosser.

In 2021, we first learned that Blosser was asking questions about us, and in an unusual way: We heard from an old friend in Kansas City who told us that Blosser had reached out to him, asking about our tenure there. From 2003 to 2005 we enjoyed a great job as the managing editor of The Pitch, a fun and feisty alt-weekly newspaper. We wrote about local politics and other matters, and never about Scientology: There just wasn’t enough Scientology in KC to pay attention to. We also got to know a local TV reporter who did some great investigative work. We hadn’t heard from him in quite a few years when he contacted us to let us know that Blosser was asking questions about us.

Why would a reporter be looking up people we knew almost 20 years ago, and in a city where we didn’t write at all about Scientology, and why would that person not be calling us directly? Yeah, we’ve been here before. It was a classic Scientology “noisy investigation,” and we soon started hearing from some others that this reporter was contacting them.

Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard explained to his followers in 1966 that they should use noisy investigations to harass and intimidate the church’s enemies:

You find out where he or she works or worked, doctor, dentist, friends, neighbours, anyone, and ‘phone ’em up and say, ‘I am investigating Mr/Mrs ………. for criminal activities as he/she has been trying to prevent Man’s freedom and is restricting my religious freedom and that of my friends and children, etc

The ideas is, you call people close to the target without actually calling the target themselves, knowing that it will get back to them they they’re being investigated. Scientology wants it to get back to them, which explains why Hubbard called it a “noisy investigation.”

After we heard that Blosser was asking about us, we learned that he had been a National Enquirer reporter who lost his job after the newspaper had to pay a huge settlement when a story he worked on turned out to be defamatory and untrue. You can read about it in this Daily News report which says that the Enquirer piece made some claims about a friend of Philip Seymour Hoffman who supposedly had given an interview about the actor’s death. The friend said he hadn’t talked to anyone, and sued the paper.

Then, in 2022, we learned that Blosser had moved on from us to another target: Leah Remini and Mike Rinder. Mike told us that Blosser was calling their former colleagues who had worked on the Scientology and the Aftermath television series.

“He actually contacted the family members of people who worked on the show!” Mike said. “Scientology operatives are constantly trying to find people who will say what horrible, rotten people Leah and I were to work with. They might have found someone who didn’t do their job and ended up leaving the production team who would say something negative, but they may have even struck out on that The core team we worked with — producers, camera, lighting, research, editors and many others remain our friends and are very loyal and hate everything about Scientology.”

After comparing notes with Mike, we realized that Blosser is the new Jim Lynch, a formerly legitimate journalist who had become Scientology’s shill, investigating each of us at different times. Lynch died at 59 of cancer in 2013.

And now, Scientology’s new shill has turned his attention on Graham Berry, who started getting messages from people about receiving strange phone calls about him.

“A ‘journalist’ just called asking me questions about you which I basically skirted around or said ‘no comment’ until I could figure out what he was getting at. Then he started asking if I or anyone else ever felt sexually threatened by you, after which I said no, of course not, this call is over. He said he was just trying to get information for a story he’s working on for his clients, which struck me as odd. A journalist with ‘clients.’ I said goodbye and hung up. Unfortunately, I didn’t get his name, sorry.”

Another friend did get the name.

“Someone from South Florida called me today about a lawsuit, someone named John Blosser? Asking about rent payment, our relationship, if you hit on people, who the money was going to… wanted to make sure you knew because he seems to be digging and implying negative of you. Wanted to let you know.”

If you know about Graham Berry’s history, you’ll recognize what Blosser is doing. We first wrote about Berry in 1999, and even then he had been a thorn in Scientology’s side for almost a decade. In one memorable early legal maneuver, he had process servers chase down Scientology celebrities at a Winter Wonderland event in Hollywood.

More recently, we’ve documented how successful Berry has been getting money back for some older Scientologists. Berry is so intimidating to the church, at one point Scientology attorney Kendrick Moxon chased him down at the Stanley Mosk courthouse in Los Angeles and threw a $10,000 check at him, demanding that he take it for his client to end a case. Berry refused, and got his client a lot more money than that.

And now, Berry has stepped up his involvement in Valerie Haney’s lawsuit, and as we’ve been telling you, Scientology is hopping mad about it.

So naturally, they’re reaching back into their same old playbook.

In our 1999 story, we explained that because Berry is gay, the famously homophobic church had sent out a disgraced former cop to pretend he was on an active police investigation into sexual accusations about Berry. And now, more than 20 years later, Scientology is doing the same thing again, this time sending out a disgraced former reporter to ask Berry’s friends if they’ve felt “sexually threatened” by him.

It’s classic stuff. And Berry wanted the court to know about it.

On March 15, there was a hearing in Valerie Haney’s lawsuit, which has been forced by the court into Scientology’s version of “religious arbitration.” In the hearing, we learned that Scientology now has all three arbitrators in place, and Judge Gail Killefer has given the two sides six months to accomplish the arbitration and come back to her with its results.

In the meantime, Scientology had filed for sanctions against Haney because they were livid that Berry had gotten so involved, and had put some things into a court document (like a declaration by Mike Rinder), that they found “improper, unreliable, or inadmissible.” They asked the court to sanction Berry for his filing to the tune of $107,832.50.

Berry answered that motion for sanctions with his own broadside, but then, during the March 15 hearing, he made a remarkable concession. If you were reading our contemporary notes of the meeting, you remember what he did: Since the arbitration was set and there was nothing else to argue about in court, he offered to take back the document that had so enraged Scientology if they would drop the request for sanctions.

The judge was clearly in favor of this, and asked both sides to make the submissions necessary to accomplish it. Berry then filed a motion to withdraw his previous submission. But in it, he also happened to mention that he’s now the subject of a Scientology Fair Game attack, and attached the messages about Blosser that he’d received from his friends.

Hoo boy. Scientology attorneys William Forman and Matthew Hinks have blown a gasket over it.

While the Request purports to withdraw the offending submissions to avoid Defendants’ sanctions motion, it contains improper argument and irrelevant and inadmissible material. For instance, the Request argues that “sanctions would have been unauthorized” and Defendants’ “Sanctions Motion would have been subject to a potential cross-motion for sanctions.” Yet, the entire purpose of the submission should be to avoid adjudication of the sanctions motion, and not attempt to litigate it. The Request further claims that Defendant is currently engaged in “Fair Game” activity against Graham Berry…

As a result, the Scientology attorneys are not taking back their motion for sanctions and have asked that it be heard on June 20 as originally scheduled.

When we saw that Berry had put Blosser’s name in an official court document, we figured it was about time to go public with what we knew about him, and do what he never did while he was investigating us: We gave him a call.

The Bunker: Is it true that you’re writing for Freedom magazine?

The Bunker: Are you working on an article for Freedom about Graham Berry?

Blosser: Yes.

The Bunker: How’s the pay at Scientology?

Blosser: I’m not going to answer that.

The Bunker: I guess you had a problem at the Enquirer?

Blosser: No, not really. Wasn’t my problem.

The Bunker: Working for the Church of Scientology. Isn’t that the bottom of the barrel?

Blosser: I decline to answer.

1998: Following the recent Boston Herald series on Scientology, the St. Petersburg Times carried an article on Scientology’s investigation of the writer of the series, Joseph Mallia. “Church officials say their lawyers have hired a firm to investigate Joseph Mallia, a Boston Herald reporter who recently wrote a five-part series that raised questions about church practices. The investigation conflicts with statements made in 1994 by a top church official Kurt Weiland, who handles international legal affairs for Scientology. During an interview at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., the St. Petersburg Times asked Weiland and church president Heber C. Jentzsch about the practice of investigating reporters. Weiland responded, ‘First of all, we don’t do that.’ He added: ‘There’s no institutional or organized campaign or effort or action ongoing to go after a reporter.’ Asked this week to explain the contradiction, Weiland said the church deals with adverse news reports on a case-by-case basis. He said Mallia’s articles were inaccurate and the church was trying to uncover what ‘sinister motive’ he had and what ‘vested interest’ he was working for. ‘It’s not a personal thing,’ Weiland said. ‘Every time a reporter steps out of his way to create damage to the church…then, of course, it’s gloves off.’ ‘No one I know goes so far as to hire outsiders to harass or try to get intimidating data on critics,’ said the Rev. Scientology got its arbitrators, but also wants $107K in sanctions from Valerie Haney

Last week we told you the surprising news that Scientology revealed that two arbitrators are now in place in Valerie Haney’s case, but it is keeping quiet about who those two arbitrators are.

Also, the papers they filed indicated that Scientology is so hopping mad that their longtime nemesis — attorney Graham Berry — has stepped up his involvement with Valerie, the church has asked for sanctions, but we didn’t know yet how much money they were asking for.

Well, now Berry himself has answered the church in a couple of new documents of his own, and they reveal how much Scientology is asking Valerie to fork over in penalties…

However, this isn’t the first time that Scientology has asked the court to penalize Valerie, and in fact two years ago the church asked for even more — $160,000 in sanctions — but that request was denied by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Richard Burdge.

At that point, Scientology was whining that Valerie had filed a motion for reconsideration, asking Judge Burdge to rethink his decision to force Valerie’s 2019 lawsuit into “religious arbitration.” He denied her motion, but also denied Scientology’s request for sanctions.

This time, Scientology is bellyaching because Graham Berry has increased his participation in the matter and filed a barnburner of a brief a couple of weeks ago pointing out that there was nothing in Scientology’s rules that Valerie couldn’t nominate Tom Cruise or Elisabeth Moss or Shelly Miscavige to be an arbitrator as long as Valerie was being forced into Scientology’s “internal justice” procedure. (Scientology claimed that all three of those nominees were “unavailable” and then complained to the new judge in the case, Judge Gail Killefer, that Valerie was being “obstructionist” by naming such obviously busy and famous Scientologists.)

With Berry’s help, Valerie then doubled down, nominating 15 well-known Scientology figures such as Jenna Elfman, Giovanni Ribisi, and Rebecca Minkoff.

Last week, Scientology revealed that one of those 15 people has actually agreed to serve as an arbitrator, but without naming them. And the church also revealed that last July it had already chosen its own arbitrator for the panel. (According to Scientology’s rules, those two arbitrators will choose a third, and all three must be Scientologists in good standing.)

So with the arbitrating panel nearly set, Scientology should be pleased, right? Well, no. Church attorneys William Forman and Matthew Hinks were spitting fire about Graham Berry getting involved and submitting exhibits they blasted as “improper, unreliable, or inadmissible.” Now we learn that they want Valerie to pay the price for Berry’s involvement with penalties of $107,000 to compensate the church for having to spend time responding to her latest filing.

Berry is not amused.

Putting aside the lack of merit, that is an astonishing fees and costs amount for such a motion and their Submission herein. If that is the amount of excessive fees and costs that Defendants would be charging their clients herein it is blatant fee gouging. Furthermore, Defendants dredge up an unfortunate saga from 25 years ago that also involved evidence of outrageous and even criminal conduct by certain attorneys for the church. One of them, Kendrick Moxon, a declarant in the sanction motions, was an unindicted co-conspirator in what the U.S. Department of Justice’s Sentencing Memo in U.S. v. Hubbard called the largest ever known criminal infiltration of the U.S. government.

You sure you want to go toe-to-toe with Graham Berry on accusations of outrageous behavior, Scientology? This guy has been in the game for more than 30 years!

Anyway, in this latest set of documents, Berry is withdrawing his request that Judge Killefer step in and select arbitrators since those arbitrators seem to have been selected.

But he complains that Scientology has not notified Valerie of who these two arbitrators are that have agreed to serve.

He also agrees with Scientology’s request to set a deadline for completing the arbitration, now that the arbitrating panel is nearly set, and suggests that the deadline be set at tomorrow morning’s hearing.

From our perspective observing Judge Killefer, we have a feeling that she will be so relieved to hear that arbitrators have been chosen, she will tell both sides simply to drop the squabbling and go get the arbitration done. (For that reason, we think there’s little chance she’ll end up awarding sanctions to Scientology, which has asked for a hearing in June on that request.)

So, when will Scientology tell Valerie the names of the Scientologists who have agreed to arbitrate her claims? Who are these church members who will sit in judgment of her allegations that she was kidnapped when she served in Sea Org, and that Scientology harassed and libeled her after she escaped from her indentured servitude by hiding out in the trunk of car in 2016? (These are the allegations in her original 2019 lawsuit, which got derailed.)

We’re looking forward to tomorrow morning’s hearing to see what else we might learn.

Scientology tells court: Two arbitrators have agreed to serve in Valerie Haney case

Last week we told you that attorney Graham Berry had taken charge of Valerie Haney’s case in a big way, submitting filings which included new names for possible arbiters in her lawsuit against Scientology, which has been forced into “religious arbitration.”

Previously, Scientology had said that the people Valerie nominated, including Elisabeth Moss, Tom Cruise, and Shelly Miscavige, were unavailable. This time, Valerie submitted 15 names, including such Scientology figures as Jenna Elfman, Giovanni Ribisi, John Coale, and Rebecca Minkoff.

Now, Scientology has informed Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gail Killefer that one of those 15 people has in fact agreed to serve as an arbitrator. Also, Scientology is revealing that it nominated an arbitrator of its own in July of last year who agreed to serve.

“In short, Defendants and Plaintiff each have an arbitrator to hear this dispute,” Scientology says.

Those two arbitrators will now select a third person, and the arbitrating panel will be ready to serve. (All three must be members of the Church of Scientology in good standing.)

In the court papers submitted Wednesday, Scientology did not name either of the two arbitrators who have agreed to serve, redacting the name of the person nominated by Scientology last July because, they said, “Plaintiff and her agents have been targeting designated arbitrators with unwanted publicity and intimidation by providing their names to the tabloid press.”

Besides keeping the names under wraps, Scientology also is objecting fiercely to Berry’s recent filings, blasting him for submitting affidavits the church says are “improper, unreliable, or inadmissible.” In particular, the church is objecting to affidavits from Mike Rinder and Luis Garcia, as well as the stunning January 2022 appellate ruling that restored the civil lawsuit filed by Danny Masterson’s accusers, but which, Scientology points out, was a ruling that was “unpublished.”

In a footnote, Scientology attorney William Forman indicated just how put out the church is…

Defendants this day have served a motion for sanctions directed to Plaintiff and her counsel for the extraordinary amount of false, misleading, and impermissible material in Plaintiff’s Response to the Order to Show Cause and accompanying exhibits and declarations. As pointed out in the motion for sanctions, Mr. Berry has been cited before by a judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court for being a vexatious litigant. The motion for sanctions shows that he continues to burden the judicial system with false and frivolous submissions.

Berry has long been a thorn in the church’s side, handling cases against Scientology since the early 1990s, when he famously had process servers target several of Scientology’s celebrities at a Winter Wonderland event.

Valerie filed her lawsuit against Scientology in June 2019, alleging that she had been held against her will as a Sea Org employee at Scientology’s secretive “Int Base” east of Los Angeles, and that she had escaped from the base in 2016 by hiding in the trunk of a car. She then went to work for Leah Remini as her assistant for several years, and during that time she alleges that she was harassed, stalked, and libeled by Scientology. (Valerie continues her work in the entertainment industry, but she’s now working for another producer.)

Scientology derailed Valerie’s lawsuit when it filed a successful motion arguing that a contract Valerie signed when she formally left the church obliged her to take any grievances to Scientology’s own brand of “religious arbitration” and not to a court of law. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Richard Burdge granted Scientology’s motion in January 2020, denying Valerie a right to trial. A contract is a contract, he ruled, and Valerie would have to take her case to Scientology’s own brand of internal justice.

Valerie filed numerous motions and petitions trying to get Burdge’s order overturned, to no avail. And under a new judge, Judge Gail Killefer, Valerie was under pressure to get the arbitration process going or risk having the lawsuit dismissed outright.

It’s very important to understand that Scientology’s “arbitration” is nothing like the kind of independent arbitration that you might have gone through if you ever had to settle a claim with a doctor or a roofer or an employer. In that sort of arbitration, a retired judge or other person is selected by both sides to be the arbitrator, and that person listens to evidence on both sides and renders a verdict from a neutral position. Handling things this way saves the court system a lot of time and money, and that’s why judges can be anxious to divert cases to arbitration in order to lighten their caseload.

Scientology’s arbitration is completely different. Founder L. Ron Hubbard never described rules for arbitration, and Scientology is built on the premise that everything must come from Hubbard, who is known as “Source.” So under Hubbard’s successor, David Miscavige, a jackleg set of procedures has been cobbled together from the rules for Scientology “committees of evidence,” which is something like a court martial. (Hubbard was a Navy man in WW2.) Adapting those “CommEv” rules, Scientology arbitration takes place with a panel of three arbitrators, who must all be members in good standing.

This has been one of the chief objections raised by former Scientologists suing the church. They know that simply by filing a lawsuit they will be declared “Suppressive Persons,” which is Scientology’s way of labeling someone an enemy of the church. There’s no way, these former members say, that a panel of three Scientologists in good standing would ever hear a case fairly that involves an “SP.”

The only previous time a court-ordered arbitration was held, plaintiffs Luis and Rocio Garcia say they were denied an attorney, they couldn’t bring smartphones, they were denied a transcript of the proceedings, and the “International Justice Chief” didn’t allow 90 percent of the evidence they had brought.

And now, with her arbitrating panel nearly set, Valerie Haney may soon experience a similar “court” with all the rules set by Scientology.

1999: Protests were held at Scientology orgs this week to commemorate L. Ron Hubbard’s birthday. From John Ritson, on a protest at Saint Hill: “About ten suppressives arrived at Saint Hill, the UK headquarters of Scientology, and the ‘superior beings’ of Scientology showed how little their expensive ‘Communications Tech’ was worth by going into hiding. Just before 1:00 the ‘Saint Hill Manor Information Centre and Bookshop’ in the centre of neighbouring East Grinstead was open for business. We went to Saint Hill, picketed from 1:00 to 2:00 with none of the usual opposition. Every so often a Scientologist would emerge to photograph us, and at one stage a woman went to the house next door in an unsuccessful attempt to get a neighbour to complain to the police, half-a-dozen of whom stood outside the gates and were treated to the Xenu Rap, and extracts from L. Ron Hubbard’s rantings in honour of Dead Ron’s birthday, as were the Scientologists including a minibus of youngsters, who went in and out of Saint Hill. On returning to East Grinstead, we found the bookshop had pulled down the shutters and stuck up a notice saying ‘CLOSED ALL DAY FOR L. RON HUBBARD’S BIRTHDAY’.”
