In 1950, a well known writer for the pulps, L. Ron Hubbard, announced that he had figured out the meaning of existence. In his book published that year, Dianetics, he revealed that the thing propelling all life was the compulsion to survive.

Anything standing in your way, he said, “suppressed” that survival. And some people were suppressive themselves. “Suppressive persons” or SPs were diabolical and meant harm to the young Dianetics movement, which later turned into Scientology.

One of the bedrock concepts of Scientology today, more than 70 years later, is that bad things happening in your life (like an illness, for example) are being caused by your connection to a Suppressive Person who means Scientology harm. Or, your connection to a “Potential Trouble Source,” a person who may be in turn connected to an SP.

Former Scientologists have told us that when they literally come down with so much as a cold, they would be asked to sit down immediately and write up a report on who the SP might be in their life, or the PTS who was connecting them to an SP.

And one of the most important early courses on the “Bridge to Total Freedom” is known as the PTS/SP course, which teaches a Scientologist how to “shatter suppression” and make sure that they are applying standard Scientology “tech” in their lives.

When Katie Holmes split from Tom Cruise in such a decisive and public way in 2012, we were asked constantly if she would be declared an SP by the Church of Scientology and, by extension, if her child with Cruise, Suri, would be declared PTS.

Our answer was always the same: We just don’t know. David Miscavige, Scientology’s leader, doesn’t make those kinds of determinations public. And anyway, Cruise was not only a celebrity and therefore immune to such rules, but he was Scientology’s biggest celebrity and could damn well do what he pleased.

But then, to our astonishment, a few years later, Cruise began to act as if he did, indeed, consider his ex Katie an SP and his daughter PTS. All evidence suggests that he has simply cut them out of his life, or “disconnected” from them.

While we’ve seen plenty of evidence that his older children, Isabella and Connor, are dedicated Scientologists, Cruise has apparently chosen the Church of Scientology over his younger daughter.

And again, even if David Miscavige were unhappy with the way Katie surgically removed Cruise from her life while he was in Iceland filming a movie, and therefore embarrassed Scientology in the press, and if Miscavige did declare Katie SP and Suri PTS, Tom’s stature as Scientology’s number one celebrity would mean that he could ignore those rules and visit them any time he wanted.

But that’s not what happened.

After more than 30 years in the church, it turns out that the superpower that Tom Cruise has chosen to use the most has been his shattering of PTS/SP, and he turned it against his own ex-wife and daughter.

And somehow, he is never asked a single question about this by the entertainment reporters and gushing TV show hosts who gladhand him.

Now that’s superpower.

Update on Irish Narconon as it awaits appeal

Today’s Irish Business Post reports that in 2019, Scientology’s yet-to-be-opened Narconon drug rehab clinic in Meath County received about $2.37 million from Scientology leader David Miscavige’s slush fund, grants from the International Association of Scientologists.

The financial disclosure also revealed that the unopened clinic, planned for 56 beds, had total reserves at the end of 2019 of about $15.1 million.

For years, we’ve watched as Miscavige shifted his strategy about Narconon and its quack cold-turkey regimen, closing most of his clinics here in the US after several patient deaths and focusing on overseas facilities where oversight was less rigorous. But his plans in Ireland hit a snag when, after vigorous protests by locals in Ballivor, a national planning board changed its mind and decided that Narconon would need to re-apply for a zoning change. Narconon sued and won at the High Court, which held that the original decision to allow a clinic under previous zoning should stand. But that decision was appealed and it’s been at the Irish Supreme Court for quite a while now.

Why should Dave send so much money to a clinic that isn’t even open yet? It’s become very clear that making a big show in Ireland is important to him, even though there are almost no Scientologists in that country. We think it has something to do with impressing his best pal, Tom Cruise, who claims Irish roots.

We’re now coming to the top of Tom Cruise’s superpowers that he’s picked up with his dedication to Scientology for more than 30 years.

And looking back at the abilities and powers he’s been picking up along the way — leaving his body, levitating objects, destroying planets — is there really any surprise where this was all leading?

Throughout his lectures, L. Ron Hubbard tantalized his audiences by dropping hints that what was really going on was that far, far back in the dim past, we were not only “thetans” — immortal, disembodied beings — but that we had awesome, galactic-wide powers.

We were, in fact, gods.

But the evil trillion-year-old psychiatrists from the planet Farsec (not kidding about that) and other tricksters had created elaborate traps for us and implanted us with amnesia-causing and debilitating implants that made us forget not only our trillions of years of existence but that we had at one time commanded whole universes.

Repeatedly, in his lectures, Hubbard refers to his followers as fallen gods who have lost their powers, fallen deities who might regain those awesome abilities if they would only trust in Hubbard. Here’s a sample, from a 1954 lecture.

The Eighth Dynamic is really infinity stood upright. And it simply means infinity. Now, you can come along and say, ‘Well, you also mean the Supreme Being?’ No, we don’t particularly mean the Supreme Being. How do we know that you aren’t, collectively, the Supreme Being. See? That’s probably much more closer to truth. There are gods around of various kinds. There are some wind gods over in India; there are various savage gods of one kind or another. But if you give them a good quizzing you find out that they’re just a thetan and they behave most remarkably like you would if you hadn’t thought that you ought to lay aside all the power you had, too. — L. Ron Hubbard, October 19, 1954

Do Scientologists actually absorb these hints from Hubbard? Oh yes, they do.

One of the most telling moments proving that came several years ago when journalist Bryan Seymour was given access to some of Scientology’s celebrities, who were remarkably frank with him. And in his conversation with Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, she revealed the truth: That she was in Scientology in order to regain her status as a god….

“I believe that there is a power that I am striving for. I think the best way to describe that would be to name that ‘God,’ you know. And ideally I would have to say that I am striving to be that God.”

 
We know that the tabloid press and a lot of Tom Cruise fans are desperate to believe that he’s actually a level-headed guy who would leave Scientology if it weren’t for all the blackmail it has on him.

It would be pretty to think so. But the actual record of Tom’s involvement in Scientology suggests that he has completely absorbed L. Ron Hubbard’s teachings that he’s a trillion-years-old thetan, that he’s lived countless time and expects to live countless more while helping to ‘clear the planet’ and spread Scientology throughout the galaxy.

And, that his explorations as an Operating Thetan will not only help him retrieve his memories from the Whole Track of his existence, but that he’ll retrieve the awesome and frightening powers he lost along the way.

That he is, in fact, a god.

We’re continuing to count down Tom Cruise’s abilities and powers after decades in the Church of Scientology, and now we’re reaching the really potent stuff.

To help readers understand the importance of our subject today — Tom’s ability as an Operating Thetan to resist between-life implants and the amnesia that comes with it — we need to tell you a bit more about Scientology’s aims as laid out by its founder, L. Ron Hubbard.

Hubbard was a prodigious talker. He gave lectures for decades, sometimes up to three on a single day. And all of them were dutifully recorded and transcribed by Scientology. We happen to have access to nearly all of them, and we’ve been gradually making a study of them for several years. (This is how, for example, we have been able to pull out a choice Hubbard quote for every date on the calendar year in our daily “Source Code” feature.)

We’ve looked through hundreds and hundreds of Hubbard lectures that span a period of 1950 to 1972. And we’ve become familiar enough with them to know that some years were more interesting than others. Lectures in the early 1950s could be pretty wild, but for us the truly best vintage were the talks he gave in 1963. There was something about that year, as he was delivering the “Saint Hill Special Briefing Course” in East Grinstead, England, when he really let his hair down and talked plainly about Scientology and its goals.

Later, by the early 1970s, everything had become about production goals, rising or falling stats, and administration. But in 1963, Hubbard was very revealing about his ideas about the universe and our place in it.

One of the very best talks that year took place on July 23, when Hubbard went into detail on a really arcane idea that is at the center of Scientology’s goals. We’re talking about “between-life implants,” and what happens after the body you’re currently walking around in wears out.

You see, Hubbard’s claim was that each of us are actually immortal beings he called “thetans,” and we’ve lived trillions of years over countless lifetimes, jumping from one physical body to another. But it’s only since Scientology’s development, with the insights of Hubbard, that the “technology” had been invented to allow you to retrieve memories from your “Whole Track” of existence. Only with Hubbard’s help, in other words, could you finally begin to piece together who you really are and what you’ve been doing for billions and trillions of years.

So why, you might ask, have you been unable to remember this on your own, without Hubbard’s help? Well, he explains in the lecture, whenever a body dies, the thetan that had been inhabiting it is whisked to Venus or Mars, where evil invader forces operate high tech centers where they implant false memories in a newly freed thetan.

Of all the nasty, mean and vicious implants that have ever been invented, this one is it. And has been going on for thousands of years. It’s the most complete memory wipeout system and the biggest bunch of lies that anybody ever had anything to do with. Now your understanding is that when you die, why somehow or another about fifteen minutes later you appear in another body. Let’s look at this thing from a time disorientation basis. That is a lie. It takes 69 days plus. More than 69 days. And you very often go — see, this has upset some of our calculations. We’ve wondered what has happened to some of our people, why they didn’t show up again immediately, that sort of thing. You’ve gone as long as eight or nine years between death and birth.

After your delay, you are sent back to Earth and you then go to the nearest maternity ward and jump into a newborn to begin a new life. But thanks to these nasty implanters, you lose all sense of who you used to be in your previous lives.

Even Scientologists are unable resist this between-life abuse, and will lose everything they’ve worked on, all the memories they’ve been able to retrieve, once their body dies and they are implanted with false memories by the evil invaders.

It’s only by becoming an “Operating Thetan” — the ultimate goal of Scientology — that a thetan becomes master of matter, energy, space, and time (MEST), and can fend off any attempts by the implanters to mess with him or her between lives.

This is what the “Bridge to Total Freedom” is all about. To raise you up high enough through the OT levels to OT 8, when you are finally an Operating Thetan, and can live lifetime to lifetime without being given amnesia by Earth’s enslavers.

Now, we want to make it clear that we’ve quickly summarized material here that Hubbard goes into in mind-numbing detail and over many lectures. And many Scientologists themselves are often unclear on this ultimate goal of Hubbard’s technology. Someone like Marty Rathbun, for example, in his books, tried to portray the OT levels as simply something to give people more confidence in their lives.

But last night, we happened to be talking to a Scientology technical expert, Bruce Hines, a former auditor whose preclears (subjects of auditing) included Kirstie Alley, Nicole Kidman, and even Mary Sue Hubbard.

We told him what we were working on, and that we knew some Scientologists disagreed with us that this is the goal Hubbard laid out in his lectures.

“This was the essence of what were doing. It was to help people avert that cycle. It was why I was in the Sea Org,” Bruce said, agreeing that the goal of Scientology was to help OTs avoid between-life implanting. “Hubbard said similar things earlier. But I think you’re right, 1963 is a time when he really let out what he thought, while talking to these Saint Hill Special Briefing Course people.”

Marc Headley has estimated that reaching and finishing OT 8 can cost a Scientologist anywhere between half a million and $2 million. But what a reward! Finally, when Tom Cruise’s well-preserved corpus ultimately gives out, he can fend off the invader forces at Venus and Mars and jump right into a newborn somewhere, and still remember that he’s Thomas Mapother IV, movie star, and he’ll avoid the kind of between-life amnesia the rest of us have to put up with.

Wow, imagine what a precocious child that will be!

The Toronto media is mostly abuzz with the verdict in the Paul Bernardo case, but there is a small blurb in the Toronto Star about the Scientology case. “Scientologists pay giant libel debt on time By Wendy Darroch. The Church of Scientology handed over almost $3 million yesterday, before the noon deadline, to pay off the largest libel award in Canadian history. The total award, including damages, interest and costs, was $2,953,624.”

We’ve been describing Scientology superpowers which are relatively benevolent: Helping at the scene of a car accident, resuscitating the dying, etc. But let’s not forget that OT Scientologists also bear great responsibility because some of their abilities are terrifying.

In 1963 Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard spelled this out in a really amazing lecture titled “The Free Being.” In it, he reveals that Operating Thetans are known throughout the universe for their reckless ferocity in war.

An OT Scientologist, suitably worked up and raging, could destroy all life on a planet by simply tossing it about with a finger, he says.

The condition of OT in this universe became looked upon as highly dangerous and highly unstable. You could stand around an airfield batting the airplanes down as fast as they rose, you know, and so they couldn’t serve as theta traps and all this sort of thing — and walking all over the buildings and that sort of thing. And the next thing you know, a sleep light was going and somebody was saying, “Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. Create. Be solid.” And it was a losing war. And a very interestingly losing war, because it was lost by the most powerful. That’s what’s peculiar about this war.

Any one of you within a relatively few hundred trillion years, probably could have taken this planet and touched the north pole lightly and that would have been that. You’d probably even show me the proper stance you would use to slow a planet down, as well as to take one, throw it out into the freezing dark and put it back on its orbit again without any meat bodies to clutter it up. Interesting study: How do you knock off all life on a planet but trees and plants? Just how do you pull an air cover?

Later in the same lecture, he returns to the idea of an OT literally pulling the atmosphere off of a planet (“pull an air cover”), saying that there’s evidence it happened here on Earth.

You’re up against the social structure of the organization in which we exist at this moment. And you pose a tremendous threat to that social structure. You could tear it to pieces! In two different ways, one by the rehabilitation of tremendous power and force. That’s one way. That’s pretty easy. You make somebody OT and he’s good and mad on account of what they did to him in Chicago, and he pulls the air cover and that’s the end of this planet. Don’t think it hasn’t happened.

He then goes on to describe his evidence: flash-frozen mammoth meat served at an Explorer’s Club dinner that showed the animal had died so suddenly the plants it was eating were still fresh inside of it. (This was a bogus claim that has been thoroughly debunked.)

But still, we love the idea that Tom Cruise is keeping control of his superpowers, which could be so devastating to all life on Earth if he wasn’t careful.

Those crew members who got a yelling from Cruise over their lax Covid protocols are just lucky he didn’t rip the atmosphere off the entire planet with a finger just to teach them a lesson!

2000: The Arizona Daily Star reported on August 31st that an Arizona Scientologist has been charged with investment fraud. “Benjamin Franklin Cook III was charged with 37 counts of racketeering, fraud and theft in connection with an investment scheme run by his company, Dennel Finance Ltd. The indictment alleges that Cook defrauded more than 300 investors of a total of $41 million. If convicted, Cook, of Carefree, could face a sentence of up to several hundred years in prison. Cook’s plan promised investors that their money would be placed in a European Bank trading program. They allege that he used the money to buy luxury items like cars, airplanes, a house and other real estate properties. Cook also donated $1.8 million to the Church of Scientology.”

We’re still counting down Tom Cruise’s Scientology superpowers, and this time we’ve reached a biggie.

It’s one of the primary aims of any Scientologist to achieve the thing that L. Ron Hubbard described nearly from the very beginning of the Dianetics/Scientology movement, and that’s the ability to get out of your own physical body.

And not just to get the sensation that you were floating above yourself, but that while you were out of your flesh and bones, you could have full control of your senses, that you would have “full perception.”

Until you experience that, dear thetan, you just aren’t a real Scientologist.

Once again, for help understanding this key concept, we have turned to former Sea Org official Chris Shelton.

Going out of your body (or is it out of your mind?) is very important in Scientology. In fact, I dare say it is the most important experience a Scientologist can believe he has ever had. Hubbard recognized this when he wrote that going exterior for the first time was a powerful subjective experience which almost uniformly served to prove to the person that they were indeed a spiritual being, just like Hubbard described! Indeed, he wrote that it was the experience of exteriorization which was the proof of his first axiom of Scientology: Life is basically a Static. Hubbard’s idea of a ‘static’ is simply that which exists but has no physical universe component. It is a spiritual entity which he then termed a thetan.

It’s not for nothing that from 1952 – 1954, exteriorizing people dominated all of Hubbard’s lectures and writings. There were numerous processes and commands worked out to get someone to think they’d “popped out” of their body. The most famous of these was “Be three feet back of your head.” The next best was “Try not to be three feet back of your head.” Hubbard wanted all of his followers to have this very subjective but, to them, very real experience cemented in their minds because that would ensure their continuing loyalty to his cause. Not coincidentally, if you read the local newsletters circulating at that time among the various Dianetics groups, Hubbard was very desperate for some loyal followers because his reputation was waning significantly and his broken promises were catching up to him everywhere he went.

To this day, Scientologists hold exteriorization as the ultimate proof and the ultimate goal of so much of their belief. They desperately want to believe that what Hubbard says is true but only through what should be the relatively simple process of exteriorization can be be sure. So it’s talked about frequently by Scientologists and sometimes bragged about by a few. If you are someone who has experienced “going exterior with ful perception” (meaning you can see and hear and even taste everything around you at will) then you are often plied with questions by other members about the experience.

The last thing I’ll mention is that many OTs are in the sad state of believing they exteriorize at will at night, when their body is sleeping, and they flit about from here to there and even off the planet. They then come back when their body is waking up or when they become bored and want to perhaps go to sleep as a thetan. I say this is a sad thing because my real point is that I’ve come to learn from psychology that the whole idea of being exterior is actually an induced state of dissociation. This is not a good thing. As documented in various psychiatric journals, dissociation is a detachment from reality where a person feels disconnected from their thoughts, feelings, memories and surroundings. Hubbard encourages this as a “spiritual state” and then uses commands to induce it! So this is simply a recipe for mental disaster for every Scientologist who spends time working on trying to achieve it.

By the way, if, in reading that, you experienced the sensation of popping out of your head, then I highly recommend you get back in there immediately.

1999: Charlotte Kates reported a revenge picket against Bob Minton and Stacy Brooks in Philadelphia. “Last night I enjoyed a lovely dinner with Bob Minton, Stacy Brooks, Rod Keller, and Ken Dandar. Suddenly a woman came over to the table, put her hand on my shoulder, said ‘Charlotte Kates!’, turned around to her male companion, and said, ‘Let’s go.’ I explained that that was Helene Furlong, the Field Control Secretary at Philly Org, we met the two of them outside. Helene was accompanied by a public named Leo, who introduced himself to us as Helene explained that she’d heard ‘some pretty bad things’ about me. I explained to her about what I’d learned on the Internet. She said I was stopping people from going free, and I told her that I have a webpage. It provides information. It doesn’t stop anyone’s free choice. Then Stacy began to explain about her experiences at Int Mgmt, with David Miscavige. Helene took Leo’s arm a few times, and told him ‘We have to leave,’ but Leo stayed to listen to our answers, and ask more questions. He asked Stacy and I if we missed the tech, to which Stacy replied that no tech is worth having to give up everything else. Continuing with our countdown of the superpowers that Tom Cruise has attained after his decades in Scientology, we reach something so special you’d think Mr. Top Gun would have crowed about it by now.

We’re talking about the ability that Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard described in a 1972 lecture. If a Scientologist is in time, Hubbard explained, he or she could convince a thetan abandoning a dying body to come back.

In other words, powerful Scientologists have the ability to raise the dead, if they’re on the scene of an accident quick enough.

In the lecture, Hubbard said that when a person dies, as a thetan (an immortal, disembodied soul), they leave the physical body and get the heck out of there, or “do a bunk.” But if an auditor is persuasive enough, he or she can talk that thetan into returning to the body, even if they’re already speeding past Arcturus by that point.

Here are Hubbard’s actual words from the lecture…

The funniest tale of all of that is — we’ve never had a catastrophe with it — but the funniest tale of all of that is the auditor who all of a sudden had a PC — the English slang term was “do a bunk,” which meant run away or desert — and they started calling this “do a bunk.” This auditor had a PC and the PC did a bunk. Well, when they really do a bunk, boy, they do a bunk.

They’re going past Arcturus, as I’ve said before, at 90 miles an hour, or two light years a second, and really did a bunk. When they do that the whole body collapses and their arms will hang down and they look like an old rag doll that somebody has just grabbed half the stuffings out of.

They really go ruhhhhlllll, that’s it. They don’t roll up on the floor in a prenatal or something like that. They just go. That’s it, you know, boom.

And this auditor talked and talked because they’re still in dim communication, you see. And he talked and talked to her: ”Think of your husband, think of your children, think of…” and so on and he talked and talked to her. He couldn’t get her to come back and pick up the body at all. Until all of a sudden he happened to think, “Think of your poor auditor,” and she came back and picked up the body.

I was just a couple of minutes late. State cops were in my way, but a Negro had been drowned. They were in my road to a point where I couldn’t get to the guy and tell him to pick up the body again, or he would have, don’t you see. And they were busy resuscitating him and that was the end of that. It was too late. He really had done a bunk. He finished.

We’ve actually brought little kids back to life and that sort of thing — just tell them “pick up the body,” you know. Now, you just tell them with Tone 40, just say it around the vicinity, they’re still around. And back they come again.

As a matter of fact, Washington, DC got very mad at a Scientologist one time. He decided he was going to do a bunk and he was going to drop the body and he did. He just had an unpleasant afternoon with IRS, and he came back and he just kicked the bucket. That was it, colder than ice and he just wouldn’t pick up the body again. And they told him and they told him and they told him and he wouldn’t. That was it. He, by the way, has shown up again calling for his favorite cigars at two years old.

But anyhow, the upshot of all of this is, is this opens the door to a fabulous amount of action on your part which will sometimes look very magical, because remedy of havingness in various ways.

Now the only thing that gets wrong with the thing is, what can the guy have? And, you will find that I have just given a demonstration here to the Flag medical officers which is HCOB 7 April 1972 Touch Assist, Correct Ones, which I call your attention to. Now, what’s that all about?

Yes, well this is all about equalizing, and it says at the beginning that this is how you tell a medical doctor about it. On assist, when you’re speaking with medicos, you talk to them in terms of restoring calm in blood and nerve channels. Notice that is in there because that isn’t what you’re doing.

You’re giving him back the havingness of his body.

We especially like that last part, where Hubbard explains that it’s important not to tell the doctors what you’re doing. They aren’t ready for it, see. Just say that you’re “restoring calm,” not bringing the dead back to life.

Scientologists, always so humble. Come on, Tom, tell us about the thetans you’ve ordered back into their bodies!

1998: The St. Petersburg Times reported this week that Scientology has reached a proposed settlement with the Clearwater Police Department over destruction of investigative records. “The Police Department tentatively has agreed to destroy any ‘unnecessary’ records in the 40 boxes of documents accumulated during its 13-year investigation into the Church of Scientology, which ended in 1994. The agreement, if approved, would settle a four-year federal court fight between the city and the church. The church argues the intelligence files include false information and that their release to the media violated privacy rights. City Commissioners heard details of the proposed settlement in a closed meeting Thursday and are scheduled to consider final approval at their next meeting, Sept. 3. The settlement would not pertain to current investigations involving Scientology, said City Attorney Pam Akin, including the ongoing inquiry into the unexplained death of Scientologist Lisa McPherson in 1995. The most controversial document in the files is a 10-volume report authored in the mid-1980s by Lt. Ray Emmons, now retired. Emmons alleged Scientology was a criminal, money-making scheme, but could not convince the state attorney’s office to prosecute. The police files also include other documents, including complaints by disaffected Scientologists who told police they’d been ripped off by Scientology and complaints of harassment against uniformed members of the Scientology staff in downtown Clearwater. The settlement calls for the police department to ‘conduct a good faith review of the Scientology records to determine which of those documents they can destroy as unnecessary.’ Police would have four months to accomplish the task. The review would be done by police personnel only, with no input from other city departments or the church. The settlement document concludes with two additional provisions. One is that the police department may never speak publicly about the settlement. The other is that church attorneys are to be notified immediately when the public or media seek access to the documents. Akin said the latter provision was ‘a little unusual,’ but is allowed under state records law as long as it doesn’t delay anyone from receiving the documents they request.”

We’re continuing to count down the superpowers that Tom Cruise should have attained after being a dedicated OT Scientologist for years and years.

And one of the things about being OT that we’ve always found fascinating, at least as it’s reported in Scientology’s magazines, is the ability to use “tractor beams” that shoot out of high-level Hubbardites.

Repeatedly, in the “OT Phenomenon” section of Advance! magazine, OT Scientologists report that they prevent a car accident by sending beams out to grab a car and pull it to safety. (And Scientologists especially love reporting that the person they’ve saved doesn’t even know they’ve done it. Scientologists love the humble brag above just about anything else.)

For some help understanding what the heck these OTs are talking about, we’ve turned once again to former Scientologist Phil Jones.

Phil, we learned about tractor beams from Star Trek. But what are Scientologists talking about when they boast about beams coming out of them?

Previously, I mentioned “theta flitter.” This is the beam of energy that a thetan puts out to perceive and control the universe around him. Tom Cruise, being at the top of the Scientology Bridge should have easily mastered this by now.

One of the biggest “hooks” in Scientology is the promise of “OT Abilities.” The power to control things by theta intention alone. To move things with our minds.

And wouldn’t we all like to be able to do things like summoning a beer from the fridge to have it float in the air into our waiting hand, as we sit and watch the latest Super Bowl? Or better still, set the dice down in your favor at a game of craps in Vegas.

All of these abilities are described in the basic Scientology books. You don’t even have to get to the confidential OT levels to find out about them. And Hubbard is very specific in outlining exactly what a thetan is capable of while operating without a body.

There’s even a process about healing the body, published in the book, which can be done before OT levels are even embarked upon.

“Ask the preclear to be a foot back of his head. Then one asks him to see if there are any items in the body he would like to repair and proceeds to let the preclear repair them.”

Let me note something here. Scientologists will say, “Well, these are all pre-OT levels” when talking about OT 1-7 (although that’s not what Hubbard said). But in this statement in this book Hubbard says “preclear” which is before you’d even get to OT levels or pre-OT levels.

Shouldn’t Tom have used this process to handle his broken ankle? Zap: Foot fixed! And since he’s a Clear it’s not like he would have forgotten how to do this as he’d have a perfect memory as Hubbard described in Dianetics.

As a Scientology OT, Tom should also be able to use Tractor Beams and Pressor Beams:

“After a very large amount of auditing… he can further, without the aid of a body, move objects and do a thousand other ‘interesting tricks’ which could very well be viewed with considerable awe, for they have not been seen on earth in recorded history but have lived in legend.” — Scientology 8-8008, pg. 60.

“The patterns of energy are viewed by the thetan in terms of pressors, tractors, explosions, implosions, pressor ridges, tractor ridges, pressor-tractor ridges, and balls and sheets. The pressor is a beam which can be put out by a thetan which acts as a stick and with which one can thrust oneself away or thrust things away. A tractor beam is put out by a thetan in order to pull things toward him. The tractor beam is an energy flow which the thetan shortens.” — Scientology 8-8008, p. 29.

Tom Cruise is a Scientology OT. He’s the third-highest person in Scientology, next to Hubbard and Miscavige. If he can’t do this stuff, then nobody can. Oh, well, maybe nobody can. Hmmm…

One final note. I saw this in the book and it kind of jumped out at me: “The essence of time is apparently possession. When possession ceases, the record of time ceases. Without possession, change cannot be observed.” Scientology 8-8008, p. 56

Past is Prologue

1996: Grady Ward posted a series of messages this week with some updates on his case against Scientology. “The criminal cult does now have a window of opportunity to dismiss their claims without prejudice without the permission of the court or of the defendants. They will lose this opportunity once we have permission from Judge Whyte to re-file our counterclaims under technically more sufficient grounds. The first filing failed basically because the federal law alleged to be broken by the criminal cult (Deprivation of Civil Rights) is a criminal offense and no right was granted (apparently) that permits private parties to civilly sue under it.” After a bit of nice discovery from the cult, which ought to be a blast no matter what the results, I will move for summary judgment. I also get to do quite a bit of third party discovery through issuing my own federal subpoenas. Now Thomas R. Hogan says that he will move for my contempt in front of Judge Whyte as a result of the recent NOTs reposting. Will he lie like Helena K. Kobrin when she promised to do the same when I filed the titles of the NOTs, but rolled over instead?”

You are probably aware that evangelicals who are “young-Earth Creationists” figure that our planet is only about 6,000 years old, right? But were you aware that Scientology is notable because it also has a pretty warped idea about the age of our universe — except in the other direction.

Our longtime readers are well aware of this, but we wanted to make sure that our newer readers are clued in as well as we continue to count down Tom Cruise’s Scientology superpowers that he would have attained during his decades in the church.

Cruise, like other dedicated Scientologists, ascribes to L. Ron Hubbard’s conclusion that the universe is quadrillions of years old, and that you and us and everyone else are actually immortal beings, “thetans,” that have lived for trillions of years, inhabiting innumerable physical bodies lifetime after lifetime. (Actual scientists say the universe has only been around for about 13.8 billion years, but what do they know.)

Now, it’s hard enough to imagine what it would be like to live for a thousand years, let alone a million or a billion, but trillions?

And Hubbard goes even farther. One of the primary aims of Scientology is to give you the ‘technology’ that will allow you to remember what you’ve been doing for the last few trillion years and over those countless lifetimes, which is achieved by being questioned intensely in sessions that are referred to as “auditing.”

And here’s the thing: If you really have lived trillions of years, Hubbard says, then you have experienced just about everything there is to have experienced, including committing heinous, horrific crimes.

We learned just how horrific Hubbard had in mind as we studied in detail a somewhat obscure 1952 lecture Hubbard gave in London. With the expert help of former Sea Org official Sunny Pereira, we pieced together what Hubbard was talking about.

Here is part of that startling unpacking we did of Hubbard’s words:

“If someone is denouncing sex with a child today, Hubbard advises the auditor to find what makes a person say that by learning what happened to them in the past, maybe trillions of years ago. And that’s actually a pretty normal instruction for Scientology auditors up to the current day,” Sunny says.

And what is the overt (sin) that Hubbard commands you to locate? You will find the preclear, far in the past, “driving the little boy up to sexual enthusiasm, up, up up up.”

“That means continuously using a little boy for sex, yeah. It’s pretty gross,” Sunny says.

That continues until the little boy “can’t give any more” and with a PANG, goes to 0.0 on the Tone Scale, which is “body death.”

L. Ron Hubbard, in other words, is suggesting that someone who denounces sex with children today is covering for the fact that sometime in their distant past, they sexually abused a child to death.

“Yes, that’s how I’m reading it,” Sunny says.

Hubbard, in his 1952 lecture, wants his listeners to understand that if they find that a person undergoing questioning today expresses disgust with a horrible crime, it’s usually an indication that they have committed the crime themselves in the far, far distant past. And for some reason to illustrate this idea Hubbard decides to use the example of sexually killing a young boy.

“He’s saying that anyone who reacts negatively to people molesting children today is going to have all of this stuff in their track [their long distant past lives] that you can find. That’s what makes them feel that way,” she says.

Hubbard is accusing anyone who denounces sex with children as having some dark secret in their past lives about killing kids sexually?

“That’s right. And like with the awful Dianetics passage about kissing 7-year-old girls, he could have used any example to make his point about covering up sin. So why is he using sex with children to make his point? It’s his own insanity that he’s talking about in this stuff.”

We thank Sunny again that she had the patience to go through that awful lecture with us. And we’ve included it in this countdown because we want readers to understand that as an OT 7 or OT 8, Tom Cruise has thoroughly absorbed these ideas. That he’s actually lived for trillions of years, that he’s attempted to recover his “Whole Track” of memories and would learn that he has experienced just about everything, including committing horrific crimes, and that in Scientology it’s best not to blow the whistle on someone for their bad acts in this lifetime when everyone has so much horrendous behavior in their countless previous lifetimes.

2000: An account of the interview process at Scientology-affiliated company Executive Software was posted to a.r.s this week. “At the interview they were very impressed with my technical knowledge and experience. At the end of this interview they said they rigidly follow the L. Ron Hubbard 11 volume set of how to run a business. The HR lady administered three written tests to me. The first one was a personality test. The second test was a timed test of basic mathematical skills and logical thinking. The third test, however, I think is the one that tests to see how compatible I am with Scientology. Questions like: Do you believe in Destiny? Who invented Buddhism? When you vote, do you: a. Vote your party. b. Study the issues and then vote. The HR lady said she would get back to me either way. I called the HR lady a week later having not heard anything. She said, ‘Oh, I was just about to call you. You know there were many others applying for the job and we picked someone else.’ I doubt she was ‘just about to call me’. I believe I was not hired because of my answers to the Scientology test.”

We’ve been counting down the Scientology superpowers that Tom Cruise can expect as an OT Scientologist and million-dollar donor.

And one of the superpowers that we see mentioned quite a lot in Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s lectures is the ability to “mock up” solid objects from nothing more than the mind itself. And in particular, in a passage that really intrigued us, Hubbard claimed that with OT powers you could “mock up” a Cadillac that was even better than the original:

“You should have things which are motion sources in there. The level of truth of that universe ought to be good. You would BE faith in that universe; or your mock-ups, as far as faith is concerned, you would probably rely on a mock-up a heck of a lot quicker than you’d ever rely on a piece of MEST. I mean that seriously. You’d just rely on the mock-up. That’s not bad; if you can create a Cadillac which can outrun Cadillacs, I think you’d depend upon your Cadillac. Get the idea? But if you were really up at the top of the mock-up curve, you’ve made a Cadillac, you would drive your Cadillac much in preference to a Cadillac. You get the idea? It sounds strange, it sounds peculiar, but if you were doing that, and you really set out to make a Cadillac, yours would be a better Cadillac, for you.” — L. Ron Hubbard, December 11, 1952

As far as we know, however, Hubbard wasn’t making things pop into existence while he was onstage, so we were left very curious about this. Why did Hubbard claim that Scientologists could create objects out of thin air without ever demonstrating it?

For some help on this question, we’ve turned again to former Sea Org official Chris Shelton.

Scientology is full of magical thinking and at the heart of it is the concept of creating your own reality. Lots of mystic, occult and religious groups, as well as much of the New Age philosophy, such as “The Secret” has at its root the idea that if you think it or imagine something is true, then it will become true because “the universe” will somehow rearrange itself to accommodate your desires. There’s certainly nothing wrong with being purposeful or intending that things go well but this is different. This kind of thinking assumes that you as a living being have an intention that all by itself can act as a kind of energy or force which will proactively create change in the real world without you having to do anything more than think about it. And that is about as accurate a description as I can give for what Scientologists think they are doing when they “postulate” or “mock up” their own reality.

This is a core belief of Scientology. You cannot be involved with it for even a few weeks before you’re going to start hearing about “postulates” and creating your own reality. “Mock ups” is a little older of a term that is used more in auditing than in regular day-to-day interactions, but these terms are all synonymous.

Hubbard’s writings and lectures are full of doublespeak, so he can be hard to nail down when it comes to making explicit statements on this. Some of what he says implies he’s only talking about you “mocking up” things in your “own universe,” i.e. in your imagination, while in other places he seems to be saying that he means in the real world. Or he will have it both ways by saying you could create a car or a boat or a plane in your front yard if your postulates (your wishes) are made strongly enough or with enough “theta intention” but don’t worry if it doesn’t manifest right away because you probably aren’t up to that level of power…yet. Keep going in your Scientology auditing – which he insists is the only thing that can help you – and eventually you’ll get to a point where your mock-ups will truly manifest in the physical world.

This, by the way, is why all those lame “OT Phenomenon” success stories are published and even exist in the first place. These stories of changing weather and lost keys being found are the “proofs” that you can mock-up your desires and make the physical universe bend to your will, but it only manifests in these small ways because we all aren’t yet “fully OT” where we could mock-up a whole new planet if we wanted (or rip the air cover off this one, as Hubbard boldly claimed in one lecture). Our infinite powers of creation are waiting for us at the top of the Bridge if we just persevere, pay our money and do our time and get ourselves there.

I’ll never forget a seminar that was held about this exact subject. It was an IAS Fundraiser, actually, and this “high powered” OT asked all of us to “mock up winning the lottery.” After he gave us a moment to do so, he asked “Now, after you did that, what was the very first thing you thought next?” We were puzzled as it appeared most of us didn’t really think anything but he insisted we keep thinking about it until someone piped up,”Well, I thought that probably won’t happen.” The speaker jumped all over this. “Yes! That’s right! Don’t you see?” he exclaimed. “The only reason your mock-ups don’t happen is because you counter-postulate them yourself! You trap yourself immediately after you create the thought and that’s why we are all stuck here. It’s only through Scientology auditing and training that you can guarantee you stop counter-postulating yourself and your mockups will come true!” To my 22-year-old naïve Scientology self, that statement made perfect sense. I was the only reason I didn’t have anything and everything I wanted.

Of course, I can see now that this was just the installation of what we call a “double bind.” Those are the crazy-making equations we carry around with us that stick us in Catch-22 situations which can drive us a bit mad. Thinking you are basically a god with infinite power on one hand, but that you are also the only thing that is stopping yourself from ever being, doing or having whatever you want – believe me when I tell you that can cause you to lay awake at night staring at the ceiling trying to make sense of it all. How am I stopping myself? How do I control my thoughts? How do I control my mock-ups? Ron says we can create our own reality, so how come I can’t create mine??? And it’s that kind of thinking that will ensure Scientologists keep coming back for more. It defies all logic and all reason but it’s one of the most powerful beliefs in Scientology because it’s built on one of the most powerful emotions we can experience: hope. Hubbard leveraged that hope and he made hundreds of millions of dollars by doing almost nothing else but that.

We’ve been counting down the Scientology superpowers that Tom Cruise can expect as an OT Scientologist and million-dollar donor.

One of our favorite Scientology superpowers is something we learned about a few years ago, and we think it’s been criminally undercovered by the media.

We’re talking about the feature we wrote on super Scientologists Greta Van Susteren (yes, the former Fox News host) and her husband, wealthy attorney John Coale.

While we were learning about their dedication to the church, we discovered that each of them had, according to Scientology’s own publications, completed something called Operating Thetan Level Four.

And what is OT 4? Well, here’s what we said about it at the time.

Although the previous level, “Operating Thetan Level Three,” or “OT 3,” gets a lot more attention with its story about Xenu the galactic overlord made famous in a 2005 South Park episode, we think it’s a shame that OT 4 doesn’t have its own notoriety.

You see, on OT 3 you might learn that you are not just one being but actually a collection of many, perhaps thousands, of unseen souls clustered together after being marooned on Earth in a genocidal act 75 million years ago, but on OT 4, you learn that there’s even more work than simply chasing away these “body thetans” or “BTs.” It turns out that your unseen body thetans also have drug histories, and it’s your job to get them all to go through some kind of rehab to dry out.

Now, before you scoff, we want to point out that this is not some religious ritual that we’re dishing on. We know some folks out there get uncomfortable with the idea that we’d describe the intimate details of a “religion” that is no more nutty than the others. (Or so someone always claims, without fail.)

But you’d be wrong about that. This is not religion we’re describing. This is inerrant scientific fact, and any honest Scientologist will tell you as much. When you are auditing New OT 4, you are not supposed to be praying or trancing or otherwise having a transcendent spiritual experience. L. Ron Hubbard described an actual state of reality — you have invisible ancient alien entities inside and hovering around you, and they have drug histories, and, at about $10,000 for the level, it is your task to determine those drug histories and dry out the junkies you have for space cooties.

Again, we will say to the doubters, this is scientific fact presented by Hubbard, and Scientology’s own publication demonstrates that John P. Coale completed this procedure on his way up the Bridge to Total Freedom, and at around the same time he was handling what he called the “mother of all lawsuits” against America’s tobacco companies. (How many of his body thetans were smokers, we have to wonder.)

And Hubbard is ready for your objection that you may not have used any drugs in this lifetime: “Maybe the guy has never taken LSD or Pheno-barbitol in his lifetime and doesn’t have any of that drug actually in his body. But the BT or cluster freewheeling through an incident containing the drug mocks up the apparency of the drug in the body, making the guy feel that he is on that drug.”

Hubbard’s jargon is a bit thick, but you get the idea — your current life is going to be affected by your unseen spirits re-experiencing their drug binges from millions or billions of years ago until you take care of it.

And, he spells out, your body thetans may be carrying around drug residues that we haven’t even invented in this solar system, so be prepared to restimulate the mother of all flashbacks.

 
We wondered then, and we still wonder now, why John and Greta haven’t shared this amazing technology with the rest of the world. After all, if a journalist like Greta has learned how to dry out her junkie space cooties even if they’re having flashbacks from super space heroin, isn’t that something she would recognize as a pretty big story?

As for Tom Cruise, yes, we know he’s also completed New OT 4 because Scientology itself, in a 2004 film not intended for the public, revealed that he had completed OT 7.

Cruise has, in other words, also put his hitchhiking invisible body thetans on the wagon after putting them through L. Ron Hubbard’s wild brand of space rehab.

1999: An affidavit was posted to a.r.s this week by Robert Cipriano, and filed in a libel lawsuit by attorney Graham Berry against Scientology attorney Kendrick Moxon.
