For instance there were some (not all in fact I ran into quite a few who were and are spooks who think OT is a very cool thing) in CIA and other sectors of ‘National Security’ who feel threatened by it. I mean their job is to keep things secret and hidden and having pesky OTs around totally ruins that game plan for ’em. Then of course you have your average SP who isn’t too thrilled by the idea because it makes ‘the masses’ (probably an appropriate term by those stuck in a GPM) harder to suppress and dominate.”

1996: The UN Human Rights Committee criticized Germany this week, alleging discrimination against Scientologists. From AFP:
“The 18-member committee discussed Monday and Tuesday the first report on the human rights situation in Germany to be submitted by Bonn under the terms of the 1976 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights since the country was reunified in 1990. A senior official of the German justice ministry, Matthias Weckerling, defended moves against the controversial Church of Scientology as prompted by the duty of the state to protect its citizens against the activities of certain religious sects. But members of the committee said there was a very fine line between protecting the public and respecting the rights of religious expression and belief.”

1996: Golden Era Productions set off a bomb this week during the shooting of their new movie “Man the Unfathomable”. From the San Bernardino Sun: “The Church of Scientology blew up a replica of a downtown Los Angeles building early Tuesday at the former Norton Air Force Base, shaking people awake as far away as Redlands and Highland. The movie is about misunderstandings between people that ultimately turn violent, said Hilary Dezotell, a Golden Era spokeswoman. The scene with the explosion is about an agent who infiltrates a group and winds up blowing up a building. The explosion occurred just after 1 A.M. Tuesday, several hours after it was scheduled, said city fire Inspector Laurie Sawhill, who was overseeing the explosion for the Fire Department.”

1996: Scientology purchased an ad in Thursdays’s New York Times, comparing the current situation in Germany with Nazi Germany and the holocaust. German and U.S. officials and Jewish leaders all condemned the ad. From Reuters: “The advertisement, headlined ‘Practicing Religious Intolerance’ and ‘Germany Then and Now’ above the eagle and swastika insignia of Hitler’s Third Reich, described Germany as the only country in the world that systematically discriminates against Scientologists. In recent months, German officials have said Scientology should be banned or at least placed under covert surveillance. Scientology is not considered a religion in Germany and the government says it exploits the gullible for profit. ‘You may wonder why German officials discriminate against Scientologists,’ the advertisement said. ‘There is no legitimate reason but then there was none that justified the persecution of the Jewish people either.'”

“In this lifetime the downfall of any thetan began with his loss of some heavy mass. The heaviness of the mass was the value of the mass. For instance, an auditor wishing to trace the feeling of degradation in a preclear would look for a time when the preclear lost or was removed from a massive object. The auditor then has the preclear mock up the object and change its quality better or worse until it ‘snaps in’ automatically on the preclear. Then the auditor has the preclear mock up enough of the object to create an avalanche. 1999: Cinescape published an article on Scientology celebrity Kelly Preston, wife of John Travolta, on her part in the movie Battlefield Earth. “Kelly Preston is talking up what she’s seen on the set of her husband John Travolta’s big screen version of L. Ron Hubbard’s book, Battlefield Earth. ‘I’ve seen some of the footage and John looks so weird. He’s the leader of the alien force and he has this prosthetic face and nobody would recognize him.’ Preston also has a cameo role in the film as another alien which she describes, ‘I have a huge head and I walk on these stilt-like legs.'”

“Book one? Nobody cares about Book One. That faded away seven decades ago. You need to be less politically correct. What you need is celebrities who actually speak their mind. Not Tom Cruise. OTs, almost by definition, do not organize Book One events. One can’t be an actual OT and involve oneself with that, because it is a waste of time. Napoleon got things done. And he had R6. You are not an OT, and no one should treat you as such. You can’t get things done and refuse to support people who do. You are as causative as a mentally disabled person in a wheelchair. Scientology OTs, putting the tech aside, are probably some of the least effective beings on this planet. I haven’t seen good results. And that’s because of lower grades.”

Past is Prologue

1996: Dave Touretzky posted a letter to Roger Milgrim, attorney for Scientology. Dave responded to Milgram’s letter threatening legal action over the NOTS Scholar’s page, which does not contain the NOTS materials. “I appreciate your assurance that RTC does not desire to engage in litigation with me over this web site or impinge on my legitimate First Amendment rights. In return, let me assure you that I have no desire to become involved in litigation either, or to violate RTC’s legal rights to its intellectual property. From its inception, my web site has been devoted to the scholarly analysis and criticism of the NOTs documents to the extent permitted by law, but no further. I have always tried to obey the law as it pertains to these documents, and I find it significant that your letter does not allege any illegalities in either the present version of The NOTs Scholars Home Page or any previous version. Your concern, as expressed in the concluding paragraph of your letter, appears to be about illegal actions your clients imagine might occur at some time in the future. Let me begin by affirming that I understand the NOTs documents to be copyrighted works, and I have no desire to violate the rights of the copyright holder. Furthermore, my web site has always included the warning that while anyone may submit commentaries on the NOTs documents, ‘materials that clearly violate US copyright law will not be accepted.’ Third, you write that my web page ‘appears’ to contain a solicitation to receive the NOTs documents themselves. Carter’s ‘Essay on Scientology’ and Karin Spaink’s ‘OT III Summary.’ After uploading this material September 7th, the files showed up in the library 4 or 5 days later. They remained there for about two days before being removed. I made an inquiry with the AOL librarian, who told me that…Well, yes, a Scieno had objected to the presence of that material in that library. The AOL staffer also told me that the subject of copyright and other legal considerations were raised by the Scienos. Just today I was notified that the files have been replaced in the library. At this point I am going to finish uploading all other sections and links as practical to the library to give the information as wide an audience as possible on AOL.”

Past is Prologue

1998: The St. Petersburg Times reported that Scientology is opening a new school in Clearwater, the Clearwater Academy. “A new private school using educational concepts promoted by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard is scheduled to open today downtown. Clearwater Academy International, at Drew Street and Myrtle Avenue, will have an enrollment of 120 students from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade, said executive director Pam Chipman. A new $1.5-million facility now holds the combined enrollment and resources of three smaller schools that merged last year — A to Be School, Jefferson Academy and Renaissance Academy. About 150 people attended the event, including several top officials from the Church of Scientology, Clearwater’s Assistant City Manager Bob Keller, city Public Works Administrator Rich Baier and Nancy Cartwright. The annual tuition at Clearwater Academy is $7,800. School is in session year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday, except for 6 weeks of off time sprinkled throughout each year.”

1997: In response to last week’s article in the St. Petersburg Times about Lisa McPherson, Scientology attorney Elliot Abelson wrote a letter to the editor, which was published this week. The letter attempted to cash in on the distrust of tabloid media following Lady Diana’s death in an auto accident. “While many tabloid media are currently undergoing some responsible self-examination, reporter Tom Tobin and the Times continue to exploit the tragic death of Lisa McPherson with relentless and sensational reporting of non-news. Lisa’s many friends and those who knew her and loved her would rather not have the last days of her life exploited and sensationalized by media. Unfortunately, the Times has no such scruples. It is intrusive and unnecessary reporting such as the Times has displayed that is the reason the reputation of the media is currently at a low ebb.”

Past is Prologue

2000: Jeff Jacobsen spoke before Clearwater’s City Council this week. “I didn’t know how far Scientology’s influence has spread in this community just from visiting once a year. But I’ve seen the influence now. Scientology gets away scot-free after the death of Lisa McPherson, while critics of Scientology are enjoined from even walking on certain sidewalks in Clearwater. A Scientologist hits a critic’s video camera with a hammer and the police do nothing. A picketer is assaulted not once but twice by a Scientologist, and despite the assaults being on video tape from different angles, the Scientologist is not arrested. Just a few weeks ago a German official from Hamburg came to town. I was at the airport when about 30 Scientologists greeted her with shouts of ‘Nazi Go Home!’ and attempted to manhandle her. I was there when the Scientology attorney came demanding that she be deposed in a case she has nothing to do with at the exact time she had already scheduled a news conference. Ms. Ursula Caberta has gone home after having been viciously treated by Scientology, and let me assure you that the European media, starting with Der Spiegel, have already begun to paint Clearwater as German-hating and nuts. I suspect you are going to be seeing fewer German tourists around here now, thanks to the actions of Scientologists. Maybe when Europe’s tourists boycott our wonderful community, the hit in your pocketbooks might wake you up to reality.”

1996: Grady Ward posted news this week of Scientology’s investigation into his computer files, and the (poor) state of negotiations towards a settlement. “The Special Master has informed me that Madame Kobrin has asked her to retain a PC expert to attempt to ‘crack’ a series of pgp-encrypted multi-megabyte files that were seized along with more than a compressed gigabyte of other material from my safety deposit box. Ironically, they phoned to ask for assistance in supplying them with a prototype ‘crack’ program that they could use in iterating and permuting possibilities. I did supply them a good core pgpcrack source that can search several tens of thousands of possible key phrases a seconds; I also suggested that they should at least be using a P6-200 workstation or better to make the search more efficient.” This morning, I received e-mail from Thomas R. Hogan, chief counsel for RTC in the RTC v Ward litigation before Judge Whyte of San Jose, California soundly rejecting my final offer for settlement. The cult and I have had two settlement meetings so far in which no agreement was reached and in fact I felt that they were interpreting my willingness to talk as capitulation rather than a good faith effort to promote some kind of win-win situation. So now I am in it for the long haul.”
