2001: The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Scientology celebrity Jenna Elfman has worked to open a new mission in San Francisco. “Jenna Elfman was helping an eager crew put finishing touches on the new Scientology mission set to open tomorrow. She told TIC she’s been spending a lot of time in San Francisco helping to build and paint the children’s art center in the basement. Elfman had befriended firefighters who stopped by yesterday morning. She was wearing a red aluminum bracelet sold by L.A. firefighters to raise money for New York disaster relief efforts. When fellow Scientologist Kirstie Alley called, the four firefighters shouted their hello. Elfman described a day of fire training she’d once done for a magazine story and praised her visitors’ courage and superhuman strength, and they joked about coming to the mission for dance lessons.”

2000: Ursula Caberta, head of the Scientology task force in Hamburg, Germany was greeted at the Tampa airport by a group of Scientologists protesting her visit to the Lisa McPherson Trust. “A beige shirt is shouting ‘Go back to Germany, Nazi criminal!’ twice through cupped hands. Meanwhile crowd of clams is pointing and shouting ‘This lady is a criminal!’ ‘You’re not welcome!’ ‘Nazi!’ and similar shouts. Blonde middle aged woman, ‘Go back to Germany, we like freedom of religion here.’ Airport cops hold them back, and there are shouts ‘You’re all damned! You’re all damned!’ An announcement was made in the terminal after the crowd died down: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, in case you were worried about what just happened here, those people were members of the Church of Scientology.’ End of announcement. “All sorts of disastrous things will occur If you become an expert Dianetic auditor. Then we’re all in trouble because we will start curing everything, you know, and knocking out psychosis and neurosis and doing all those poor doctors out of their jobs. And you don’t want to do any doctors out of their jobs. But I say this in all sincerity, this leads you in to the fact that you can heal, and that is not your profession. You’re trying to clear people, and these processes will heal people, even badly run. They’ll cure migraine headaches and arthritis and lumbosis and medicosis and all kinds of wild illnesses. But it doesn’t necessarily follow that it’s uniform. In other words, you don’t get one for one for one, you see, for the excellent reason that the whole reactive mind is the reason for very severe illnesses. It’s the whole mind. And you can key out parts of it and make somebody quite well, you see. You can key out some very specific illness like that and have it go away but don’t be too surprised if it comes back. This was billed as a ‘must-see’ event for all scientologists, promising to give information on the incredible breakthroughs for opening up the bridge to total freedom for everyone. The entire event was a presentation by Miscavige and no one else. ‘With pre-OTs now enrolled on new OT 8, the next target is the release of new OT 9 and 10. So tonight I’m going to talk to you about technical application and recent actions that have been taken to cause a dramatic impact on speed up the bridge. The goal is no less than every Scientologist moving up to OT. 1997: Dick Cleek reported that Cynthia Kisser has lost a libel suit against Scientology. “A jury reached a verdict in favor of the Church of Scientology International and its president, Heber Jentzsch, today in a libel suit brought in 1992 by Cynthia Kisser, the former executive director of the non-profit which once operated under the name Cult Awareness Network. Kisser filed the civil suit against Scientology and Jentzsch in United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois over statements in an October, 1991 issue of Scientology’s Freedom Magazine which she felt labeled her as a criminal. Kisser had an especially difficult hurdle to overcome in bringing the libel suit because Judge James Zagel declared Kisser a public figure, requiring her to prove not only that the statements in the Freedom Magazine about Kisser were untrue, but that they were printed with reckless disregard for the truth.”

1995: All Things Considered aired a 30 minute story on a.r.s vs. the cos this week. “The raid on Dennis and his litigation was discussed in detail, including the fact that they walked away with totally irrelevant documents. The description of the raid did not make the scienos look like the soul of propriety. I think Leisa Goodman was next, with her defense of the litigation. That was followed (or preceded) by Klemesrud explaining how it was impossible to monitor everything that passed thru his BBS, and why. He gave what I thought was a good explanation of the issues, in a way easily understood by the lay person. Following all this was an interview with a person whom I think was identified as a Georgetown law professor, coupled with some discussion of the recent Prodigy ruling and the efforts in the US Congress. The gist of the professor’s position was that the Scienos didn’t have a case, the Prodigy ruling argued for less, rather than more, monitoring by providers so as to avoid the publisher label, etc etc.”

1998: An agreement which Scientologists must sign to become part of Scientologist On-Line was posted this week. The idea is to flood search engines with thousands of near-identical web pages, crowding out pages from Scientology critics. The agreement requires that Scientologists use a web filter to prevent access to critic’s web sites. “Church of Scientology International has been authorized to grant you, as a Scientologist in good standing, the non-exclusive, royalty-free right to reproduce and display on your personal Web site the collective membership mark ‘SCIENTOLOGIST’ and the Scientology symbol, upon certain terms and conditions. Scientology email claims massive new construction plans by year end

It did occur to us, when we watched Scientology leader David Miscavige open four long-delayed “Ideal Org” projects in quick succession in Austin, Mexico City, Chicago, and Paris, that it cleared the decks of new projects.

Four Ideal Orgs in as many weeks was a lot, even for Miscavige, but what was next?

Sure, fundraising has been going on for years and years in places as far-flung as Albuquerque and Long Island, but how many more years would it take to complete them, and what is Dave going to open in the meantime in order to convince his wealthy donors that Scientology is “expanding.” (It actually isn’t.)

So we want to thank the reader who forwarded us an email from the folks in Albuquerque who are trying to raise enough cheddar to move on a dormant Ideal Org project that goes back many years.

We’ve seen similar fliers for fundraising that has been slowly grinding away in several other places in the US: Battle Creek, Boston, Hawaii, Long Island, New Haven, Philadelphia, Puerto Rico, and Saint Louis.

But at the rate those projects have been going, we figure it would be a decade before Miscavige got them all completed.

The new Albuquerque email, however, contains a rather startling claim: Scientology wants all of those Ideal Org projects to move into their construction phases by the end of the year.

2000: Stacy Brooks reported on a recent trip to Europe to meet with leaders in those countries. “Bob Minton and I just spent ten days in Europe. We went to Cologne, Hamburg and Paris. We discussed how we are dealing with the Church of Scientology and how we can coordinate our actions. Bob and I were both disturbed at reports from both Germany and France about actions that have been taken by the United States against those countries for their position on Scientology. First we had a brief stay in Cologne during which Bob participated in a live television program. The host of the show was Hans Meiser, a well-known television personality in Northern Germany. The others on the show were Dr. Norbert Blum, former minister of labor and a long-term critic of Scientology, and Tanya Neujahr, a former Sea Org member at Saint Hill who, at the age of 17, was put in charge of security for several isolation watches. Later Tanya tried to escape from Saint Hill and was dragged, kicking and screaming, into a room where she was locked up and kept in isolation herself for several days, until she agreed to write up her overts and withholds (O/Ws) and remain at Saint Hill. Also on the show were Sabine Weber, head of OSA in Munich, and two other German Scientologists. Bob had to speak through a translator so he was able to answer Hans Meiser’s question about harassment, but he wasn’t able to participate in the heated argument that took up most of the show. Dr. Blum was very good at responding to the Scientologists’ attempts to portray themselves as victims of religious discrimination. After the television program was over, we took a train with Tanya to Hamburg, where we were met at the station by Ursula Caberta, head of the Scientology task force for the state of Hamburg. She arranged a press conference so that the German media could have a chance to hear a U.S. perspective on Scientology. Ursula, Bob and I all spoke to a room filled with German media. Several newspaper articles resulted, as well as television spots on the major stations. We flew to Paris for a meeting arranged by Roger Gonnet with Denis Barthelemy, secretary general of the Interministerial Task Force Against Cults. Roger also arranged many media interviews for us in Paris. We discussed with Ursula Caberta and Denis Barthelemy the importance of separating the belief system from the practices of Scientology. We found that they are in complete agreement that Scientologists are perfectly free to believe in the efficacy of the tech and any other aspect of Scientology they wish to embrace. But they feel strongly, as we do, that no one, including a Scientologist, has the right to violate anyone’s civil or human rights or to abuse or deceive anyone for the sake of achieving their own agenda.”

Scientology says that David Miscavige did attend the Paris opening

Sunday morning, in our report of Scientology’s Paris Ideal Org opening, we said that we were still awaiting the church’s own press release about the event, but that our correspondents on the scene were reporting that David Miscavige was a no-show, only the third time the church leader hasn’t personally attended an Ideal Org grand opening.

Yesterday, Scientology finally did upload its press release, and it included photos of David Miscavige presiding over a ceremony inside the building (see above), but not pulling the ribbon outside the org, where he was definitely not present.

So, the church, at least, gives the impression that our correspondents outside the building simply missed the fact that Dave was inside, giving a speech on Saturday.

But is that what happened? Alex Barnes-Ross isn’t so sure. The former London staffer who was on the scene Saturday suggests that there’s evidence Miscavige was actually in town a week before, and may have taped the speech inside the building then. And a photograph in the press release gives us some reason to agree with Alex’s assumption.

But first, we have Jonny Jacobsen’s thoughts about Scientology’s press release, and then we will also take a look at the local speakers who showed up to shill for the church. Here’s Jonny’s take…

Well, the official statement is out and Scientology insists that its leader David Miscavige did indeed attend the opening.

From our vantage point, outside the entrance it was difficult to see, and Eric Roux, who handled PR for the event, was cheerfully vague on the subject. He wouldn’t say either way whether Miscavige and Tom Cruise would be coming.

Later, when the officials were marshalling the assembled Scientologists for the money-shot of the opening out front, Roux ventured that he thought between 2,000 and 2,500 Scientologists had attended. But he had the sense not to be too categorical about that.

The official statement, the usual mix of hyperbole and tactical omissions, speaks of “thousands” attending.

The photo above is one I took from the ground, standing next to one of their official camera stations. By then, the marshals had done their work. They had packed the visitors carefully in front of the entrance, handed out a few dozen French flags and rehearsed some enthusiastic bursts of cheering before actually launching the ticker-tape.

Scientology’s own carefully framed shots of the ribbon-cutting ceremony give the best view of the turnout.

Looking at a drone shot, I could be wrong, but it looks like hundreds, not thousands, to me.

According to the official statement, Miscavige told the gathering that Paris was home to the very first Church of Scientology on European soil, established in 1959. And here’s where the tactical omissions come into play.

There is no mention of founder L. Ron Hubbard’s 1978 conviction — in absentia — for fraud.

No mention, either, of the 1987 conviction of two Scientologists over the death of a client at a Narconon centre. They had interpreted her repeated epileptic seizures as withdrawal symptoms — she had stopped taking her epilepsy medication before starting treatment there.

Nor does Miscavige appear to have had anything to say about the 1996 conviction, confirmed on appeal, of a senior official in Lyon following the 1988 suicide of a member there. He was convicted of manslaughter — homicide involontaire — after the court found that his relentless hard-sell had pushed his client to take his own life.

And finally, Miscavige does not appear to have mentioned that two Scientology organisations were in 2009 convicted by a Paris court of organised fraud for what was, essentially, standard operating procedure inside the movement. Again, this judgment was confirmed on appeal.

This is not, I should add, an exhaustive list of Scientology-related convictions in France. But perhaps Miscavige didn’t want the speech to drag on too long.

Another couple of points worth noting.

In the 2009 judgment, six defendants were convicted for the illegal practice of pharmacy over Scientology’s habit of handing out massive doses of vitamins to people taking their Purification Rundown. And yet, among the official photos of the new centre’s interior is a fully equipped Purification Center.

Finally, it is worth noting that while the French term for the movement has generally been Scientologie, the movement’s official release — in both English and French — sticks to “Scientology.” That is also what you can see posted above the entrance to the new centre.

Not sure what the Academie Française would have to say about that.

1997: Los Angeles’ Berendo St. was officially renamed L. Ron Hubbard Way this week, and a.r.s poster “Roger” provided a first hand account of the event. “My guess would be that the crowd was easily 5000 people. I was very surprised by the strong support of Hubbard and Scientology demonstrated by the political types who spoke. (head of the LA City council, someone from public works, and reps of the Governor and Mayor). After the ribbon cutting and the speeches, the politicians, the President of Scientology, Travolta, Kirstie Alley and David Miscavige linked arms and walked the length of the street as the band played on. David Miscavige a no-show as Scientology opens ‘Ideal Org’ in dreary corner of Paris

We’re still waiting for Scientology to put out its own press release about yesterday’s party in Paris and make it official, but according to our correspondents on the scene, church leader David Miscavige missed an “Ideal Org” opening only for the second or third time.

He also didn’t show up for the ceremony to open the Berlin Ideal Org in 2007, and we couldn’t find photos of him at the Moscow opening in 2011, and perhaps there’s some logic to that: Germany, Russia, and France have been rather hostile to Scientology over the years, and Dave doesn’t like to take chances. Or something.

Anyway, we have a treat for you today. First up, a report from our great friend Jonny Jacobsen, a British journalist living in France. We asked him how the opening was playing in French media and he was on the scene yesterday to give us his impression.

We’re also adding today’s “Group Therapy” podcast for everyone, which is our weekly discussion for subscribers, and today features a conversation we had last night with Alex Barnes-Ross and Pete Griffiths about their day at the Paris opening, and also, in Clearwater, former Vice Mayor Mark Bunker with his report about the latest land-grab by Scientologists in that seaside town.

Well, hip hip hooray, as I believe they say, the Paris Ideal Org is open.

Several hundred Scientologists from around Europe gathered for the inauguration ceremony at Seine-Saint-Denis, just north of Paris and just a handful of protesters — well, at most two handfuls.

It is probably true to say you could count the number of protesters who turned up on the fingers of two hands — albeit from several, different countries including Ireland, England and Switzerland.

But they were probably outnumbered by the journalists who turned up to cover the event — and they were literally queueing up for interviews.

For while most of the Scientologists attending were shy about talking to the assembled camera crews, one former member did one interview after another with the French media.

Ludovic Durand, who quit Scientology around 2007, has until now kept a relatively low profile. He told me he had done one or two interviews in the past with individual journalists.

Saturday, then, was in a sense his media coming-out as he patiently explained to several TV crews, one radio journalist, and at least a couple of print journalists the ABCs of Scientology.

And the first media reports are already out.

Broadcaster BFMTV sent their camera crew to the new org the day before opening and did a hidden-camera sequence filming some poor bloke at the entrance suggesting they come back the next day.

They also got a quote from the head of MIVILUDES, the government watchdog monitoring “cultlike activities” expressing his concern. And a spokeswoman from anti-cult group CAFFES warned about the hold Scientology can have over its members.

Rolling news channel France Info also had a report, which consisted mainly of an interview with the vice-president of another anti-cult group UNADFI, warning of the movement’s dangers.

So far as I can see they were not on site Saturday, but they used a photo from Agence France-Presse (AFP) which sent at least one photographer and a video crew. Those photos and the video footage of course will be available to their clients around the world.

And another major radio station, France Inter, based its report mainly on an interview with Durand.

And French daily Le Parisien also did a report Saturday, though that’s behind a paywall.

There will be several more stories coming out in the coming days, very few of them likely to be flattering to the movement. But if the minders intervened to discourage Scientologists talking to the media, it was in part because they know they are on a hiding to nothing in France.

Listed as a cult in one government report and convicted of organised fraud in a 2009 trial (confirmed on appeal), the official line towards Scientology here is hardly friendly — as Bunker regulars will know.

Sure, President Emmanuel Macron had a private meeting with Tom Cruise during his first term as president. And certainly, the authorities are more concerned with the threat of an Islamist attack in the run-up to the Olympics.

But that does not mean that Scientology is viewed with any less suspicion.

And we can expect a string of other reports in the coming days from:

— Le Quotidien, a hip, early-evening talk show presented by Yann Barthès, a kind of French version of Jon Stewart;

— Charlie Hebdo still as in-your-face as ever with its controversial cover cartoons but with plenty of good journalism inside;

— From the conservative daily Le Figaro.

— And reports from at least two other TV stations.

2002: “Cerridwen” reported events at the 2002 L. Ron Hubbard birthday celebration event. “The basic theme of this event was to get Scientologists ‘rehabbed’ on getting back on purpose on the 3rd Dynamic. That means to get them to be more active and especially to get them to join staff. It’s done by ‘enlightening’ and pushing lots of Scn buttons. But it’s pretty much known and unspoken that both Org and Sea Org staff think that anyone that is not on staff is a worthless piece of shit. Throughout the event the cameras panned the crowd and we got to see Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie, Nancy Cartwright, the CO Flag Debbie Cook, Sally and Craig Jensen. Scientology’s Rich and Famous get front row seats at events. David Miscavige starts in with the Wins and Expansion News and talks about ABLE. Narconon Arrowhead is the big news. Per DM Narconon Arrowhead is busting at the seams with public and they have had to build bunk beds to accommodate all the public there. Not only that but Narconon Arrowhead is the place where Narconon staff are sent to train so that they can then go back and start new Narconon’s all over the world. Some accreditation agency had a policy that they would only accredit counselors with ‘college degrees.’ DM stated that the Narconon staff did a presentation to this accreditation board and convinced them that the Narconon/LRH tech was far superior to any college degree and the Accreditation Board was so damn impressed that they certified 22 Narconon Arrowhead counselors. There are twenty new Narconon’s in the world with 2 of them in the US. DM also spoke of Narconon Public Service Announcements and their continued playing on CNN. CNN will continue to air the Narconon PSA’s as long as Narconon continues to provide CNN with them. DM said that the VM phone line gets 6000 phone calls a week. A stat graph showed 5100 VM’s before Sept 11 and 15,400 VM’s as of March 13, 2002. Mark Yager spoke of the Mission expansion and the translation stats. Due to some kind of new computer they now have they are able to produce translated tapes, books, course pack etc. in two weeks. This is a very big deal for the C of S as what now takes two weeks used to take 4 months or something like that. I believe all of the Bridge up through Class V is now available in Russian. This includes all the course packs, books and tapes that are required for Courses in a Class V org. A Video was shown of the St. Petersburg, Russia, Mission, which is now officially a Class V org. There was a video clip on Harlington, which is the home of WISE member and big bucks Scientologist, Juan Villarreal It seems that The Way to Happiness is a being widely promoted down in Harlingen, Texas and per the video, is the sole reason why the crime rate dropped to zero in the town of Harlingen.”

Make room, Long Islanders: Scientology’s Gatsbys are moving in!

We want to thank all the readers who forwarded us the news out of Long Island this week after a business publication there broke the story that Scientology had plunked down $15.2 million for a 62,500-square-foot office building in Melville.

Some folks sounded a bit panicked. Why was Scientology buying property in Long Island? Was this some secret expansion? Should the people there be worried?

Breathe easy, Long Islanders. This is just another inglorious lurch forward for Scientology leader David Miscavige’s “Ideal Org” project, and one that has been coming a long time.

The few remaining Scientologists in this dwindling movement are under intense pressure to fork over huge amounts for Miscavige’s project, which replaces existing missions or churches with “Ideal Orgs.” It’s not actually expansion, it’s just blind ambition.

Just recently, Miscavige opened new Ideal Orgs in Austin, Mexico City, and Chicago that had been planned, built, and sat waiting for their openings for years. In the meantime, Miscavige amped up the pressure on places like Long Island, Battle Creek, Hawaii, and Albuquerque to get busy and hold fabulous fundraising parties.

We especially remember one that was held in Long Island a couple of years ago, when the folks there were encouraged to dress up for a Great Gatsby party. Remember?

Yeah, it looked like a gas.

And after years of fundraising, purchasing a building was going to happen sooner or later. But that doesn’t mean Long Island is going to have a new Ideal Org anytime soon. Something like 15 years passed between the purchase of buildings and Ideal Org openings in places like Chicago and Kansas City.

And even then, after some initial hoopla at a grand opening, Ideal Orgs then settle into inactivity.

The Chicago org, that was opened to so much frenetic folderol just two weeks ago? Our helper went by this week, and it’s already empty.

So please, Long Islanders, don’t panic. Scientology will eventually turn that empty office building in Melville into an empty Ideal Org, and the effect on your communities will be less than zero.

“With governments leaning all over Scientology and looking down our throats, for instance, the probability — Mary Sue was always curious. She always said, ‘The government wants something out of Scientology.’ She’s always saying this. ‘The government wants something. There’s some reason for this.’ And we finally found it. They want the E-Meter for front-line combat troops. I thought that was very interesting. Yeah, it’s pretty crazy, isn’t it? Typical. You see, they get so much infiltration — this is serious — they get so much infiltration in modern warfare of the type that is being fought, that they can’t tell friend from foe. 2002: The St. Petersburg Times reported that voters at the Scientology housing compound voted overwhelmingly for Frank Hibbard in the recent City Commission election. “Hibbard, a bank investment officer, unseated Hart by winning about 53 percent of the vote. Breaking it down, Hibbard received 610 more votes than Hart, according to the final results released Wednesday. Hibbard’s support was especially strong in suburban Countryside neighborhoods, which Hart won three years ago. But that was before Hart aggravated several well-known residents there who decided to stump doggedly for Hibbard. This time, Hibbard won roughly two thirds of the vote in Countryside, gaining 413 votes more than Hart’s total votes here. Hibbard’s strongest showing in any single precinct was in precinct 518, a Scientology stronghold where the church-owned Hacienda Gardens housing complex is located. Hibbard won 88 percent of the vote there, gaining 229 votes more than Hart’s tally. Three years ago, the precinct was a base of support for Hart. ‘I’m pleased at every vote we got regardless of where it was from,’ said Hibbard, a member of Calvary Baptist Church.”
