I do think that a lot of it is what you were first exposed to. Personally, I'd be really put off by a videotape-like version of Maltese Falcon, but I have a feeling (and have yet to confirm) that 2001: A Space Odyssey would transfer well. As far as anime, I would like to see Garden of Words in xfr, because the effects are very subtle, but fluid. (BTW, Garden of Words is a gem.)

Of course, even a remastered film in standard format and frame rate can be a vast improvement over the effects of the ravages of time.....

yes, that is exactly why it works so well. Pixar movies, especially the later ones like Up, are another example. I heard GITS didn't xfr so well but I'll see for myself soon. That was an awesome mix of traditional anime and CGI so I can see how a blu-ray xfr may not take well.

With some live action movies, they digitally remove the flecks and graininess that give it the film quality look. When that's removed, you get that glossy sterile look that ruins it. That's why I don't automatically upgrade all my favorite dvds, some do actually look better on dvd. Criterion usually does a really good job on their transfers, lots of TLC. Was it their version you watched? If so, that's sad. There are WB versions too and I don't think they do as good a job as Criterion does. Battle of Algiers and Treasure of Sierra Madre immediately come to mind as examples of old b/w films that kept their film look on bluray.

Ninja Scroll is on my list. I'm a big fan of well-done sound (I love the sound production in 5 Centimeters Per Second). I'll check out NS as soon as I can. There are so many well-produced shows...

Bluray does make a difference. Actually, I watched Dr. Strangelove on Bluray, and it was like a completely different film, actually a bit too video-like. Some movies should remain all clickety-filmy (Dr. Strangelove), but I think the smoothness that anime strives for, plus the sound quality, is really enhanced by Bluray.

watched Ninja Scroll on bluray the other day and OMG it was like seeing it for the first time. There were all kinds of sounds I never noticed before which for some sequences really made a huge difference as far as the immersiveness went, especially weather and gore/blood spattering noises. Animation is one of those mediums where having the best resolution and sound make a big difference. With regular live action movies, it's so-so but I think blu-ray really brings out the best in animation.

I already said what I thought of it though! And it's been awhile so the details are hazy. Make you a deal - I got Ninja Scroll on bluray recently and will write up my thoughts as soon as I see it. Deal? I am almost done with Game of Thrones, just half of season 6 and then wherever they're at on 7. I been binge watching for like 2 wks now, is exhausting.
