yeah that was a good angle for sure. Re the enemy, there was already a lot going on, if they did show enemies they would likely be stereotype cut outs. Developing them into real characters would eat up lots of time and distract from the main story.

I got the personal perspective part. I thought that was a good angle. Maybe it was that you never see ANY enemy that detracted from that. At least it wasn’t the “flying between buildings” nonsense of Pearl Harbor. (The “sticky bomb” scene from Private Ryan, where the guy waits too long to attach the bomb and gets blown up is always a O.o moment for me.)

I hope to see GITS this weekend. If you’ve seen it already, I’ll post a quick review when I do.

Yes, I did wait to see it before reading your take. I don’t even like reading critic reviews before seeing a movie I’m excited about.

I didn’t think about that re the number of boats thing but i hear you. Lots of stuff in there that strained suspension of disbelief. I don’t know anything about Dunkirk so maybe that’s why I enjoyed it more, less baggage and expectations.

Overall good but def not my fav war movie by a long shot. Private Ryan and Platoon are my personal favorites and prob always will be.

I’m glad you liked it, and hope you did so before reading my comments. I thought the sound was done really well, though in my little theater it was a bit much, and I kind of expected more of the gritty, “I could die any second” vibe of Private Ryan. What I really found distracting was the maybe 12 boats out of the armada that arrived to take the hundreds of thousands of troops off the beach (I was doing math in my head the whole time), and trying to rationalize the plane that flies – and shoots down the one enemy plane – without fuel. I don’t know. It was very well done, but knowing the story of Dunkirk, I expected a larger arena. I suppose the focus was on individual viewpoints. Maybe I should see it again. Needed some Germans.

Wow, I thought it was very gripping, especially when the boat got torpedoed and all those guys were trapped in the hull. *shiver* It wasn’t believable at times, like the guys hiding in the beached ship that was being shot at. Plug the holes with your hands! o.O Ok then. Also that family took the manslaughter of their son/brother by the shell shocked soldier very well, that was pretty impressive. Smh. It’s fine, go ahead and kill my brother bc you’re a traumatized soldier, not a problem.

Overall I liked it though. It tied up at the end really well with the rescue and the boy’s picture in the paper like he said he wanted when he was delirious. Thought the sound of the bombers bombing the port was great, swear there was animal snarl noises mixed in there. Air battles were really good too. I liked the suspense of the German planes having to be shot down before they reached the boats.

Still think Saving Private Ryan is my favorite war movie. I like the gore, is realistic. I think it’s weird when guys get bombed on the beach and they look like they’re taking a nap in the aftermath shot. No blood on them or even on the beach. Not even torn clothes. I get that blood and guts can be a distraction and steal focus but for me, sometimes its absence can be a distraction. .Also I prefer a tighter, more focused narrative in my war movies but overall I thought Dunkirk was really good. Don’t know if I’d buy on bluray but I liked it.

Granted, there is no ahhortamge of that sort of shaggy, mist-headed love bombing quand Est-infected spirituality in any given acting class (verging on some sort of self-help, psychodrama, group mind-fuckery), and to some degree I’d even argue it is somewhat intrinsic and occasionally useful…

That said, it seemed a Big Honour to be invited like that, I was impressed and there were Real Movie Stars (Julianne Moore, whom I knew from Short Cuts, for one… she wasn’t doing the 1000 yard stare thing tho.. at one point we were both getting some crappy coffee. And she said something like, ” So, how you handing It?”
“Well, as coffee goes, this dirty water should keep its dayniob (I really said this, because it was what I always said to pretty girls at craft services thinking they’d find it terribly witty. I do not recall it ever working, but..)
“0she shook her head ‘no’ and then flicked it à ka t the crowd, “This whole.. erm, ‘ooohm….” closed her eyes and swayed head, clicking fingers..
“Oh… Well, I say Charley’s right—Kill the Pigs..”
This didn’t get the laugh I felt it deserved and we went back to the group…

I wonder if she stuck with it, anyone know? There was some amazing acting, but I don’t know how much it had to do with all the mambo-jumbo….

Dunkirk….. (real spoilers, here, just sayin’) I was expecting more
of a war film. This was a somewhat non-linear telling of 4 or 5
different stories that don’t intersect, and I didn’t find any of them
gripping. The story begins right on the beach, and follows several characters in different roles: escaping soldier, civilian ship captain, RAF pilot, etc. I found the characters to be unmemorable, and the music was overwhelming in volume, but not in composition. The actual rescue of the troops seemed like a secondary story. This is just Rasha’s opinion, but I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I’d be, and I make a point of trying not to have preconceptions. Still, the cinematography is really good. I really hope y’all do enjoy the movie. You will likely have a different opinion than me, cuz I’m kinda stuck up. =^_^=
