The ends justify the means… therefore terrible ends necessitate a belief in a cause far more epic than the petty suffering he is forced to inflict on petty mortals. I mean if even for a moment he let the thought that he was doing all this for a meaningless cause that had no absolutely no relevance to grand story of human history, then he might look at himself in the mirror and see himself as a monster on the wrong side of history. That would be the end of the game right there and then.

I’m not arguing that things are simple. They are not. but certain factors weigh more heavily than others, and the IAS made sure the situation and viability of the orgs would not be improved, only worsened. The IAS was the coup de grace. or do you think DM cared anything about how the orgs or public were doing? Perhaps there was some excuse for the IAS before “the war was won” (with the IRS). But he just expanded the donations programs endlessly to keep on raking the money in, completely doing in the training and auditing aspect of scientology in the CoS, by destroying the viability of the orgs, until we have what you see today. Empty cathedrals. The IAS actually discouraged public from paying for services, as well as taking so much money most of the public couldn’t afford them anyway. That’s how I see it.

Valkov, I see how that undercut the orgs, but as I thought I outlined, I’m not sure that it was quite so simple. At some point, there started to be a shortage of auditors, in at least some places and at advanced orgs, and trouble with too much in advance payments for services starting to accumulate after the implementation of monthly price increases, and then it was easier and solved a problem (ultimately, of Hubbard’s making) just to reg for money anyway.

I had just a bit of personal experience around that era, and know that things were more complex, and there had been problems building for a while. Going out to California and seeing what was going on, including getting a taste of what was being hid on the financial side, was what got me to start questioning the scene. Conversations with old timers over the years have confirmed that the problems were longstanding and deep rooted, but only just starting to come to a head.

I know that a fair number of people, who were at the missions that were functioning well, got the impression that things were okay, and then suddenly changed. That might have been a local reality, but I don’t think it was representative of the big picture or the actual history.

Scientology lost its tax exemption in 1967 because of Hubbard’s inurement, fought that (and lost repeatedly again) in Tax Court for years, followed by years of appeals, was denied in virtually every case – and never had tax exemption again until the 1993 settlement.

In between 1967 and 1993 Snow White was uncovered and 11 of the most senior executives in the church went to Federal Prison, including Hubbard’s wife. Snow White targeted the IRS and Scientology was defeated…quite handily…by the FBI and the IRS. Hubbard went into hiding during the trials of his senior executives and never returned to public life. He died exiled and insane, cutoff from his organization and held as a virtual prisoner on secret baby watch in Southern California. At no time from 1967 to 1993 did Scientology ever regain tax exempt status. Had Hubbard not died, it is unlikely the 1993 agreement would have ever been reached.

If the above events represent “holding off the IRS for 25 years” then it would seem that Cleveland losing the 2017 NBA title 4 games to 1 represents “holding off” the Warriors – who actually won the title.

The Scientology corporations that were newly awarded tax exemption in 1993 were NOT the same corporations that were stripped of that exemption in 1967 – most of the latter had been disbanded in the interim. Hubbard’s and Miscavige’s personal inurement tax liabilities (as well as those of the old church corporations) were included in the ~$12.5 million payment made by Scientology to the IRS as part of the 1993 exemption grant to the newly reorganized church corporations.

It is important to look past the church’s spin on how events played out and view the events as they actually occurred.

Yes, the church got tax exemption for it’s newly incorporated organizations, but it has been in a continuous downward slide ever since. Global membership peaked right before the 1993 tax exemption and has declined virtually every year since. Best estimates put current active membership at 25% of what it was in the early 90’s, despite ten of millions of dollars in advertising and recruitment efforts.

What remains today is a Potemkin sham of fancy buildings with almost nobody in them, held together by a violent thug, some cash reserves and a gaggle of attorneys.

That’s what Scientology is today. That not a win by virtually any rational measurements.
