I don’t think that at some point you can reject the physical for the metaphor.

The studies in psychology that found certain biases to be irreducible by education, or at least support the hypothesis have not been discredited.

Your brain is actually very ‘plastic’ and adaptable. If it were that rigid, people who suffer minor strokes, whose brains make new connections which compensate for the damage would never recover as they do.

That kind of thinking is rather reductionist. ‘Loyalty’ to ideas, and resistance to change is best explained at a social-psychological, not a physical level.

I don’t think he knew or expressed everything on this topic but his points have some merit.

Hmm. I think in experiments in psychology it was found that even going to great efforts to educate people on certain things like transference cannot stop transference from occurring. In several experiments the psychologists were extremely surprised to find education is not able to overcome certain biases.

I think that makes sense if you consider that actual physical structures underlie our thinking and are not easily changed.

And tools like experiment, scientific method and per review to counter that tendency. These include knowledge of cognitive biases – which would not be knowledge if it did not give us the insight needed to avoid falling prey to them.

The philosopher Karl Popper would call this ‘Unfalsifiable’ (AKA ‘not even wrong’).
