A lot of that comes from reading and memorizing the King James Version of the bible as a kid, then later, from reading Shakespeare, as well as 19 century and earlier American and British literature. Old films, made before I was born (1945) add to that vocabulary, too. I think that having parents who were out of the country for 20 years also froze their language to the early 1930's, when they had left for China, and I believe that contributed to my odd vocabulary.
