Um, yeah, that and man made climate catastrophe come to mind.

And a candidate for our version of ‘the great filter’.

The prior crises of a tribe committing genocide was limited. Hordes using bows on horseback could very slowly kill many, many people and sack whole cities but now the species can be killed in a day. Nuclear weapons used by the U.S. government and Russia would exterminate us all. That’s entirely different.

People who (seriously) look for evidence of extraterrestrial life (with radio telescopes and the like) wonder where everybody is, after having seen no evidence at all.

One notion is that technological societies (the only ones we will be able to detect at a distance) pass through ‘the great filter’ – a challenge that the cannot meet. consequently, they are not around long enough for us to detect them.

Candidates for out ‘great filter’ include nuclear weapons, weaponised genetic manipulation… well… make your own depressing list.

I prefer to stay optimistic. Humans seem to have always been in a state of crisis about something and still stumble on. It’s our turn, now to stumble as best we can, and not drop the ball.

Well… you do have ideas seemingly descend upon you – but only after a whole lot of preparatory work and thinking upon it.

“10% inspiration 90% perspiration”.

This is the central point upon which we differ.

I think Hubbard didn’t understand very much except that he wanted to control people and was constantly casting about for things that would enable him to do that. Some of these things just gelled in the sub-culture of Scientology, and he did more of that. Those which failed were abandoned.

Evolution at work, really. The social situation created by Scientology provided the variation, and Hubbard the selection pressure.

He didn’t understand have any research project, nor understand what he had done. That wasn’t in him. He was too intellectually lazy and conceited.

He was in a terrible state, mentally and physically, for years – and in hiding too. If the organisation depended on his constant manipulation it would have collapsed, but it has a (social) life of its own that has sustained it to the present day.

Here’s a longer but far from complete list of posts related to this. My problem is not a lack of material, it is an excess and the incredulity of the mind of Hubbard and the outlandish efforts he made to control people.

With study tech Hubbard had thousands of ideas that are often missed by critics.

They are not accidental or quirks. Study Technology is meant to be the underlying cause of how Scientologists think for the rest of their lives.

The phenomena are not arbitrary or accidental. They are chosen to suit a purpose.

There is a far more subtle aspect to study tech.

Hubbard had hundreds of ideas in his three barriers to study and the methods both to detect them and the methods to handle them.

That’s what people often miss.

Say for a moment you consider Hubbard’s affirmations and that he might not be entirely honest about what he says, I know for some it’s a lot to ask but bear with me – if Hubbard possibly didn’t believe in the alleged barriers then you can be certain of some things.

He actually tells people to identify certain mental and emotional and physical phenomena that actually occur as evidence of one or more of the barriers.

So, when these very specific phenomena happen one is to immediately assume they have the barriers associated with that.

By having three barriers Hubbard has a false trio, instead of one option or even two.

That initially overwhelms the student that desperately tries to remember the long lists of phenomena and which they have and what barrier that particular phenomena is indicative of AND if an MU what word? Or words ? If a lack of mass for which concepts ? If a skipped gradient which gradient and how to resolve it ?

Hubbard completely divided the attention of the student, especially when they first learn study tech as it is so packed with details to remember.

Additionally the phenomena Hubbard defined as indicating his barriers in references on study are the exact same phenomena he described in tapes as indicating something entirely different.

He indicated that a person who is overwhelmed, confused and anxious is very easy to manipulate without their knowledge.

He indicated exactly how to do that and further described the state of authority instruction as teaching from on high as an infallible expert that uses overly complex terms and has high altitude.

He described numerous barriers to study phenomena as hypnotic phenomena.

The important thing is he believed he was effectively influencing students by covert aka conversational hypnosis.
