What exactly are you criticizing in Tony Ortega’s report on this case? Let’s review the points in your original post:

– was it for bringing up Cathriona’s link to Scientology (“putting a Scientology spin” is your quote)?
– was it for reminding readers about his news scoop concerning Cathriona’s attempt to get a green card through false means?
– was it for using an exclamation mark (“a la The National Enquirer” and other tabloids was your comparison)?
– was it for reporting the sexual details that were publicized by other media sources?

Apparently, your main beefs with Tony are a) his lack of professionalism and b) sensationalism. So the news story itself isn’t a problem but you’re criticizing HOW it was reported by Tony. Would that be fair to say?

I find your criticisms to be quite MINOR in nature. It isn’t a breach of ethical journalism to promote exclusive news scoops nor is it sensationalist to use exclamation marks. I’ve already explained that the sexual details were first revealed by Cathriona’s own mom and husband-of-convenience; they weren’t leaked by Tony nor were they the prime focus of his reporting. As for the Scientology link to the story, it is far from irrelevant as it relates to the question of causation and the circumstances that led to Cat’s suicide. The plaintiffs in the court case allege that it was Jim Carrey’s fault; Tony’s report indicates that there were other possible reasons that led to her demise. How is such a claim irresponsible or nonsensical?

Whether you are or are not a Scientologist, I have no idea. Regardless, you are still free to post your opinions, criticisms and disagreements here–even if they’re targeting Tony (a privilege that Scientology will NOT allow for its own membership to exercise against the organization and its leadership).

I happen to think your grievances lack substance and are even laughable because they’re so trivial. Seems to me that you view the Scientology connection as a distraction and want to “call out” Ortega for persistently pursuing that angle. Trying to downplay or cover up the existence of a Scientology link to Cathriona’s story is something a Scientology sympathizer would do. I’m also aware of the ongoing “Underground Bunker is a cult!” narrative that some online commentators wish to push. Here are traits of the Bunker that you won’t find in cults: open-mindedness, questioning, dissent, critical thinking, diversity of thought, requests for and the offering of objective proof to back up claims. Oh, and humour. Lots and lots of it. If it appears that we “worship” Tony, it really is because we highly respect his research skills as a journalist. Doesn’t stop us from voicing disagreement with him or correcting his occasional spelling errors (side note: seriously, Tony? “Sorded”, not “sordid”? Ugh. Proof that you aren’t a god). The very fact that you aren’t being obstructed from posting your criticism here is evidence of the freedom you won’t find in a cult-controlled environment.

It is nice to know that there are people on this site who will sarcastically and erroneously accuse someone of sympathizing with Scientology if they deign to disagree with or criticize the author.

Yeah I was actually bummed to hear that because I’d been a fan since his WAY back days on Mad TV, so for some reason I’d hoped or thought he’d be a nicer guy IRL.
At least there are a few out there that are known for being nice people and treating all crew respectfully, etc. That stuff just isn’t newsworthy. 😜
