IN fact, he is, in the grand scheme of things, about as effective as Butters from South Park adopting the alter ego Captain Chaos… completely ridiculous and comically ineffective.

Just to clear things up, I have come to feel that Hubbard certainly was a nasty piece of work. I certainly have no illusions that Miscavige is the devil and Hubbard the saint.
But, having said that, I have no knowledge that it was Hubbard who ordered the massacre of the missions and groups. He may well have done so, I just have never heard that before.
The fact is though that it was done. It was a very stupid and nearsighted action. These groups and missions were main feeder lines of people up to the Orgs. They were originally the “soft face” of Scientology.
So, typical of Scientology behavior, their response to lowering stats is
“get right in there and stomp the living sh-t out of it with jackboots.”

Maybe that word was badly chosen. I meant to suggest that many would (reasonably) object to the part of me that hopes Scientology will get the land so that I can see what happens next.

I don’t think Miscavige is in control of what will happen next – that will be dictated by the logic of the situation.

As the Orgs continue to decline (and we have recently seen that the ‘missions’ are now little more than a sign in a window) the best of the staff will be poached for the ‘homeland’, and rank and file Scientologists will be left with nowhere to practice.

Those with sufficient money and commitment will migrate to Clearwater. Those without will be effectively abandoned to maintain an org that is bumping along the bottom and milked for whatever money can be taken from them.

Eventually Scientology will be the organisation which dominates Clearwater and feeds a nationwide real estate scam involving empty buildings.

The CofS has not been a network of practising Scientologists for some time – the practice of Scientology is rapidly declining as a source of income in favour of the .whales’. If this trend continues much further it will not exist at all outside of Clearwater.

Eric, just to be clear, I wouldn’t disagree about Miscavige. But I would note that the sort of things you cite, are like the stripping of cash from orgs and other centralizing of control, that occurred under Hubbard’s direct orders. Miscavige was mostly just continuing Hubbard’s policies and implementing them down to the mission level, if not even specifically following his orders. He may have added his own twist of nasty sadism to how he carried it out, but I don’t think it was much different that what would have happened regardless.

Given that in the late 1970s and early 1980s, every institution that had relied on the Baby Boom demographic and the “youth movement” was starting to struggle, including other cults, I can’t imagine that that wasn’t starting to be a factor in the missions network. The missions “massacre” was likely the result of a typical organizational fight over a shrinking pie, as much as anything.

I don’t find that part of you heretical. I don’t think very many people here are into heresy, excommunication/shunning/disconnecting and so forth anyway. I think most all of us are about free discussion, not judgement.

Anyway, no matter what happens, it’s ALWAYS interesting to see what COS and COB’s reactions are. Isn’t that why we all spend so much time here? (Among other reasons.)
